I usually work out at home or at work but this location.was conveniently close so I decided to give it a try. They have a pretty decent array of exercise machines and free weights. The facility is well lit and their are video monitors everywhere with various news and sports feeds. The black card membership allows you access locations all around the country which is a good deal if you travel. Of course nobody's perfect. The piped in contemporary music is loud to the point that I have to crank my personal headphones to max volume in order to drown it out. I'm a little older (okay, a lot older) so I'm not a fan of most of it. Maybe they could provide a wireless channel that people can tune in on if they choose. There are also a lot of fitness trainers lurking around looking for customers, so expect some unsolicited advise (I usually point at my ear buds to imply "sorry dude, can't hear you." Also the frequency of bathroom and shower cleaning could be increased. I've seen items that have been left behind in the shower for a week. It is a public gym so make sure you take proper precautions. Overall, I'd say it's a pretty good deal, unless you're one of the many customers who join a gym and never use it. read more

For my one-off visit, I thought this was a decent Planet Fitness. I stopped by this PF location to stretch, use a hydromassage table, and take a shower after running the Frederick Half Marathon. I thought this PF had a nice lay out, and I appreciated the amount of space for stretching. I'll admit that I was not too impressed with the condition of the male locker room. While nothing was crazy out of order, I though the shower section of the locker room smelled a bit like mildew. Other than that minor (depending on whom you ask) issue, I thought this PF was fine for what I needed for my post-half marathon recovery. read more

Thank God for this place! I've been visiting my in-laws in Maryland and it was my goal to go to the gym EVERY day in October with only Sundays off. Since I reduced my membership status from Black to Classic, I lost my free access to gyms nationwide (my wife stopped going with me once the pandemic hit, so I didn't have a need to maintain it). I was told that any time I visited another location, I would have to pay a fee of $25, which I was prepared to pay for my three visits during this weekend. Imagine my surprise when they told me I would only have to pay $5! Hey, that's Happy Meals I can buy!! Not that I can have any. The people at this location were very pleasant and welcoming. The gym was incredible! For the amount of floor space dedicated to nautilus equipment (smaller than I was used to), I was amazed at the amount of devices available. In fact, they had several new machines that I haven't seen but hoped to use at some point. They have a larger member attendance on the average day, making things a little more crowded than I'm used to. But hey, that never stops you from getting the workout you need. Love this location. This is a reminder when canceling your membership and the rep at the desk says they will handle it. If you don't get an email before you leave the desk they didn't cancel you. I canceled mine in Sept (my fault for not remembering the guy's name who said he would handle it and I didn't have to sign any documents) today going over my statement, I just realized I am still paying them. I had open heart surgery and tried canceling my membership, they forced me to come in, in person .. it took me addition time to get in there. When I called back and asked Brenda to speak to Emile or another manager, I was told that I had harassed Emile (the person responsible for all of this). I do not consider questioning next steps, regarding an unauthorized charge to my checking account, harassment. The fact that Brenda is willing to make an accusation, using a legal term, insinuates I was doing something wrong. In reality, I have not. The major caveat to this story is that you should treat everyone with dignity and respect and that you should not always assume the customer is wrong. In this case, I did go cancel, I jumped through your hoops. And, your employee made an error that cost me money. What if those charges would have sent me into overdraft? It would have turned out to be very costly, for you. I will say that Emilee eventually apologized for her mistakes. However, this was not until I pointed out how flippant she and Brenda were being about this. I told Emilee of my issues with Brenda. When I told Emilee that I would like to the GM about what I had experienced, she told me that she and the manager had the same functionality and that I could address my concerns with her. I explained it this way. "When I have a problem with Brenda, do you think I should tell Brenda or should I tell her manager?" She responded "Me." I then asked, "If I have a problem with you, should I report that problem to you or your manager." Silence. When prompted, she said she I would have to call before noon tomorrow. I explained to Emilee that she should have him call me. The reason was lost on Emilee. Again, eventually, I got her to agree to have Ian call me. Allegedly, she is going to have the store manager (Ian) call me tomorrow, by noon. I am a bit leery to hear from a manager as reviews posted on Google seem to indicate at least one of your managers has been seen berating employees and has a couple of complaints regarding customers saying they accused them of lying. When she told me how long it was going to take to refund the money, I was taken aback. The transaction, in my understanding (and my bank agrees), is unauthorized. You are required to have a procedure in place for unauthorized transactions. My cancelling the agreement, in-person, constituted a legal termination of my agreement which revokes your right to make transactions out of my account. If you do not have a measure in place for this, that will move this process along quicker, my bank has agreed to mark this as an "Unauthorized Transaction" which will open an internal investigation by my bank into the transaction, and potentially your payment processors transactions. My first time, as a visitor. While the gym is clean and well equipped, the area where the dumbells, Smith machines, jungle gyms are, is very poorly ventilated. It was very stuffy and quite hot. Same with the lockers. The management apparently knows that because they had a few floor fans, along with the overhanging ones. The area where the treadmills and ellipticals are located, is much better ventilated. Thus the one star. This review had been posted in another site on Aug 25. I received an answer from planet fitness the next day. Probably from their web team.Asking me to speak to the manager of the place. THE MANAGER IS ALREADY AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. Stuffy, over-crowded, complete lack of gym etiquette, the machines just feel dirty and old, and it has a certain smell to it that you won't find in other Planet Fitnesses. The airflow is non-existent. The cardio equipment is new, but if you want to do anything other than that, good luck because you'll be standing in line behind 10 other people. Just not enough equipment to go around, packed into a really tight space where you can't really get around without being in someone's space. The staff seem nice but I don't really talk to them aside from the typical hello and goodbye. I have been a member for about three months. The gym is new to the Frederick area and I feel is a nice addition. Frederick is full of small gyms full of fitness freaks and meat heads hogging all of the space and equipment. Here it is a different story. Plenty of equipment and they have the slogan of a "judgement free zone." It's nice to go to a gym where you don't here grunting and zuba pants. You get a complementary session with a personal trainer whenever you would like. The locker rooms are clean and nice. In addition to the individual, not group shower, there are also irons. ALL OF THIS IS ONLY 10 DOLLARS! If you would like to upgrade to the black membership you get a couple of additional benefits. For only 20 dollars a month you get a relaxation station full of massage chairs as well as free tanning. Not to mention you can use your membership at any other planet fitness throughout the county. Planet fitness is an inexpensive gym, period. But despite their "no gymtimidation" (intimidation) motto, cheap is cheap. So what you end up with are people of all athletic abilities showing up, but that doesn't exclude the meatheads. Which, that's what makes up the majority of the clientele. If you're thinking of doing any weightlifting at all, you better either show up at the crack of dawn or at midnight, otherwise you'll be waiting in line behind all the other guys spanning the entire length of the mirrors. With what little weight equipment as there is (this is primarily a cardio-oriented gym with tons of treadmills and elypticals), expect weightlifters to hog several pieces of equipment and benches at once. If lifting isn't your thing, then really you should reconsider why you're paying to go running. But at least there's tons of machines to use. Amenities are non-existent; no towels, no headphones, etc. Nor do they offer any sort of fitness classes. Planet Fitness does offer tanning bed and massage chair usage with their "Black card" membership, but I hardly ever see anyone using this stuff. Overall, it's really just not the friendly environment they promised. The extremely cheap price attracts just as many crossfitters and meatheads as it does average joes, and the weights are always bogged up by the former. And with no amenities and limited non-cardio equipment, it makes you wonder what you're paying for. EDIT: I wanted to add a photo of the last time I was at the gym; here's a photo of the bathrooms. The actual gym is decently maintained, but the bathrooms (at least the men's bathroom) is usually a wreck. *In reference to weightlifting, I'm referring to the free weights. Decent gym but very very bad vibes. I'm a 22 year old girl and the energy in this place is overwhelming. If I had a dollar for every time I look up and see a dude staring at me, I'd have enough money to join Orange Theory instead. I just want a place where I can stretch and do resistance band workouts without having to turn around to make sure no one is creeping on me. Even when I confront these men, they are unapologetic. This gym probably works well for guys on a budget, but I'm willing to pay more to feel like I'm not being watched. This gym is located conveniently off of the Golden Mile in Frederick, which is an easily accessible location for those who live in town. It sits in between a laundromat and a dollar store, which attracts a wide variety of people so it is usually a relatively busy area. The staff is friendly and is willing to demonstrate how to use the machinery if it is unfamiliar to you. The price when I joined included a $24 start up fee and a $10 monthly fee from there on out. There is also an annual fee in July, which costs around $30. There are plenty of different machines and free weights to use and the locker rooms/bathrooms are clean. It is usually pretty busy and can get crowded at times, but overall not a bad place to workout! read more

For the money can't beat it. Been a member for over 5 years. Let me say the staff is awesome, friendly. And knowledgeable. This gym and diet helped me loose almost 100lbs. 344-250, right now. The locker rooms and bath rooms could use some more cleaning, maybe check on them alittle more often. We could use another water bottle filling water fountain as well, sooo glad we finally got one but now let's get another, 2 isn't too much to ask for considering the crowd especially in the evenings. I don't know if there is new management or not but certain machines have been broken for months, the entire spring and summer....I feel like in prior years machines were down for a few days or so, week max. This isn't right, a gym that is a cardio oriented gym and 4/5 stair climber machines are broke and the one that does work is slowly going, you can feel it. It's not smooth at all. I use ( well used...) these machine daily. In my option it's the best cardio machine for weight loss and I credit it for my results. There's no excuse they are down for this long. If you can't fix them get some new ones...The staff has no answers, I ask weekly, all we do is look at the out of order signs that have been there for months. That's my only real complaint but it's a big deal, gym members have been talking about it and voicing it all spring and summer. This is not my typical planet fitness- so I can't really speak to the business/customer service end of the Frederick location. However, I can comment on the facility in general, which I like. It's pretty small, and closed off, with essentially no natural lighting. But it does have everything you would want and expect from a planet fitness. While in town on business, I decided to check this PF location out , and compare it to my home CT PF location, as well as the many others I have seen. Since I go to alot of PF locations during my business travels sometimes I get the feeling I should be a corporate QA inspector for PF. Good: Clean, newer, amount of large sized lockers, more Stairmasters than most locations & newer model, cool overhead timer in 30 minute workout area that counts down to zero. This is much preferred over the Red/ Green traffic light style that doesn't show a timer. Needs Improvement: No exercise balls, no Bosu balls, feels smaller/tighter than newer locations, warmer in weight room like AC unit not working well. Overall worthly of price paid. read more

I've been a member of this gym since it opened in 2009. This is a bare-bones gym experience, and as such, you get what you pay for (and in my opinion, and then some). They've got their treadmills, ellipticals, stair-climber-whatcha-ma-callems, free weights and weight training machines, and a 30-minute all-over fitness circuit for people who are in a hurry or just clueless about where to begin. The staff has always been very friendly, and even though there does seem to be a bit of a turnover at the front desk, it's nice seeing the same faces pretty often. They always smile at you and say goodbye when you head out. Personal fitness instruction sessions are available for all members... I had one session when I first joined, but since I'm stubborn and like to do things for myself, I haven't had any further sessions. However, the instructor(s) always seem nice and helpful, and I always see happy (if exhausted) people tagging along after them. The gym is clean (and please help keep it that way by wiping down your equipment after you're done and tossing out the paper towels!). Usually there are a couple of sinks, shower stalls, and machines down for the count, but the staff always gets everything back up again eventually. Black card members (who pay the higher membership fee) can visit other Planet Fitness locations and can use the massage chairs and tanning booths for free. Aerobics machines have personal TVs attached to them... sometimes they go haywire on the treadmill with all the static buildup and change channel on you, but it's not really a big deal. The absolute busiest time seems to be weeknights from 5-7 pm, and it can be hard to find a free machine at that time. You'll see people of all shapes and sizes getting their move on, without judgement or criticism. Overall, for $10-$20 a month, you can't expect much, but I certainly feel like I get my money's worth here! It's definitely kept me a happy member for over 3 years now. read more

I joined the "gym" a year ago, I went with the black membership. I was never given a tour, never shown how to use anything and when asked was told they didn't have time. I tried to cancel and they told me I could not. After moving I was able to find my original contract and found that the contract said it would not exceed 12 months. I called to confirm that since I had not ben in the place in over 6 months. They said it would void after 12 months and I had to do nothing. After 2 extra months of being charged I was told I had to give a 60 day notice of cancelling and HAD to do it certified mail. So, my certified mail went out today. Hopefully this crappy company that refused to help me in the first place and just wanted my money will actually cancel out my contract this time. I'm not even sure I could call Planet Fitness a "gym." Possibly a fitness center? Although they do have a decent amount of equipment, they lack variety. I've seen fitness centers in apartments with more equipment variety than Planet Fitness. Some of the best cardio machines are the stair masters and rowing machines, but Planet Fitness has neither. They don't provide adequate equipment to stretch and do stability or body weight exercises. Stability balls and yoga balls would be a big improvement, as well as some medicine balls and kettle bells. I don't want to go to the gym just to get on a treadmill or elliptical, maybe lift a couple weights, and then go home to do my abs. Isn't that what the gym is for? At least let me bring my own yoga mat.. I don't want to lay on the same sweat covered mat that multiple people have used! The tanning beds are kind of creepy, loud, and really don't work that well. The bulbs always seem so dim they haven't been replaced in years. You can't trust that the beds are clean either, members are expected to clean them after they use them, the employees do not clean them. Half the employees don't even know when the bulbs were replaced, or which bed has the strongest bulbs. The "judgement free zone" thing is ridiculous. Good thought, but it's a little over the top and the "lunk alarm" is outrageous. That is outright embarrassing people and calling them out- PF is actually judging them... how can you prove they were judging someone else? I feel like people judge MORE at Planet Fitness than at LA Fitness, Sport and Health, Fitness First, and Gold's. It's not just the Frederick Planet Fitness, my dad got a membership to the Myrtle Beach PF since it was cheap. He asked me for some advice on exercises and machines that would work for him. I told him about kettle bells and HIIT among a few other things. He got back from his work out and said that they had NONE of my recommendations, and he didn't feel comfortable doing HIIT (wait... isn't it supposed to be a "judgement free zone"?) The $20 a month black card is a waste, the tanning beds are worthless, but for $10 a month, it's not a completely horrible gym. For beginners it's a great start to getting into the routine of working out. But for those who want more out of their workout and the ability to switch it up, spend the extra money and get a $30 membership to a different gym where you'll have more options like a sauna, pool, dedicated spinning room, classes, and more equipment than you can imagine. My best advice if you're a beginner is to check it out during the day and see if it will work for you. DO NOT go to check it out at night!! They have one staff member working the desk and they are not allowed to give tours at night. read more

The gym is clean and does not smell, there are plenty of TV's around for everything to be on. There are tons of machines, and ample space to move around. But you have treadmills, stairs, free weights and a variety other machines. The staff at this particular location has also been the nicest I have ever encountered. Very attentive, helpful and kind. My recommendation- check it out it is nothing fancy but it is cheap and convenient with lots of equipment. Weekday evenings it is packed. I see people of all ages and sizes here and I love that we all have one main goal to workout and become healthy. Some gyms people just go to meet people it's quite crazy but not this one. The mens' room is looking filthy, like it hasn't had a professional cleaning in a long time. If you only want to run on a treadmill or use an elliptical machine,this is the place for you! Otherwise, the only five workout benches where the weights are located will always be packed by meatheads that love to check themselves out constantly and take up the tiny weight lifting area all day. This gym is usually packed! You will have to wait around to do anything that doesn't involve a treadmill or elliptical. I joined because of a $99/year promotion, really cheap but not worth it if you're seriously looking for results. Unless you're planning on working out at 3 am look somewhere else! It's usually trashed with paper towels on the floor and wedged in treadmill water bottle-holders from people too lazy to wipe their machine down and throw the paper towels away. The men's bathroom usually smells like urine. However, It is very cheap and the staff is very friendly. read more

This is my daily gym that I go to throughout my work week. I chose planet fitness because of their black card perks, mainly that I can visit other locations and use them when I travel. They're priced fair at $20 a month for the black card. You also get use of massage hairs and tanning beds as well. They have plenty of cardio machines and weight machines along with free weights. They have an ab circuit available too. For your average person this gym has everything you'd need! The locker rooms are nice as well, including showers and changing rooms. THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE ON THE PLANET. They have hidden fees and their service people tell you one thing and then they charge your account another. Absolutely ridiculous. They charged my account $39.00 when their sales person told me it was okay to cancel over the phone. When I see the charge on my statement, I immediately call up and they say my agreement says I need to mail it in if I moved out of state.
