Basically, breakfast nachos. Tortilla chips with way too much verde salsa. Poached eggs on top. Wasn't a fan. My husband ordered the special. Crème Brûlée French toast. It just looked like French toast with no syrup. If I were the chef, I would have sprinkled some sugar on top and used a torch to burn it-so it would really taste like crème brûlée. Waiter was not very knowledgeable. He kept having to go to the kitchen to ask about our questions. Overall, a let down. read more

I asked the hostess if I could be seated outside on the water and was told "we have a server rotation, and it's easier if you sat at this table". Mind you, there were a lot of open tables on the water, and we were seated outside away from the water. Later, she sat people at the same table I had requested. The chicken on the Cesar salad was dry. The bill for four salads and water was over $110 with a view of the water that was underwhelming. The reason why I came here was because I went on a week long getaway with my family to the western side of Michigan. The entire time I was there I barely had an opportunity to eat fresh fish from the lake. After doing a little research, Google recommended this restaurant that was located inside of a hotel. It was not exactly what I was hoping for, but options were surprisingly limited where we were staying. Well I am happy I found it, because this place exceeded my expectations. The actual restaurant felt surprisingly upscale and classy. It wasn't that busy when I paid a visit, but that was fine because I wanted a nice quiet dinner with my young son who I ended up getting a grilled cheese sandwich (they had a kids menu which was appreciated). My waitress, who was very sweet and attentive, recommended the parmesan crusted whitefish. This dish absolutely hit the spot and satisfied my craving for lake fish. The filet I got was so meaty and tender, with just the right amount of seasoning. The amount of fish I got was quite generous, so much so that I took what I did not finish to go. I saw that other reviews for Plank's Tavern were not as warm as mine, which is sad. I throughly enjoyed my meal here and have little to complain about from my personal experience. read more

Our family comes for brunch often during the holidays and the Inn at Benton Harbor is beautifully decorated. It's a lovely place for a restaurant and we've been able to find comfortable seating for a large group. We visited on Black Friday and had a nice experience! Our server was attentive and fast, drinks were handled very well with everyone getting different coffees, teas, etc. and we were all ordered with the food out within 15 minutes. One dish was delayed but the rest came out on time. The food is pretty standard for an American brunch spot- it's 4/5 stars when it comes to seasoning/quality in my opinion, and comes at a higher price point- but I think you're paying for the view which makes sense! The windows over the water are beautiful and the decor is cozy and comfortable. So all in all, this is a great choice of a spot for a date night or family meal. The menu has all of your standard brunch options- a Benedict, pancakes, several omelettes, a classic breakfast, a hash, etc. I ordered the garden omelette and it left a little to be desired- potatoes weren't all the way cooked/ sat in a lot of oil, eggs were well cooked but the veggies were cut in large chunks/on the more raw side. This is what I meant about being 4/5 stars. Large portion sizes though, and something for everyone on the menu. The pizzas and sandwiches always look really good! And there's an extensive drink menu as well as a holiday drink menu. I imagine this place would be amazing in the summer when Benton Harbor comes alive but it's charming in the colder months as well. First the positive. Server was busting her tail and was friendly. The whitefish was really good (the couscous was so bland) as was the Herb and Loaf appetizer. Now for the reason we will not be going back and do not recommend. I ordered the Surf and Turf. It came out not what I requested to be cooked. Was undercooked. It finally came out. Manager dropped it, never said a word and left. Well now it was so overcooked it was inedible. The shrimp was not seasoned at all. It could've been at least cooked and some garlic butter, but it was like they took the cocktail shrimp and warmed it up. I had to pour salt and pepper on it just to be able to eat it. The potatoes were good until I found a potato with a stem sticking out of it. How hard is it to clean your potatoes? I told the server just about the steak. I didn't even mention the potatoes. She came back and said the manager was taking it off the bill. We never saw the manager, he never came over to apologize, nothing. This was so disappointing because we saw so many good reviews and we went there because we had gotten married the day before and wanted a nice dinner. We have plans on dessert and everything and decided to just go ahead and go. We didn't want to take the chance of the dessert being just as bad. I think this restaurant needs to work on how to cook steaks, how to clean your potatoes, and how to season your food. They also need teach their managers how to handle customer service. I say that as someone who has been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years. Do better! read more

Disappointed. It's a holiday weekend and we were passing through town and found this spot which looked like a great eatery on the water. It's attached to a hotel so there is plenty of parking. We walked in and requested a table outside and were seated right away. I'll be honest, the view wasn't great. It's on the water but the other side of the water is a big industrial/construction area. We ordered some drinks which took a while but our waitress explained the bar was a bit backed up. An hour passed and we didn't see our waiter or have our food yet. Looking around, it looked like no one had any food. My boyfriend had to hunt down our waitress to see what's going on. Turns out there were still 5 tickets ahead of us and they haven't even started cooking our food and it had been 1 HOUR. We paid for drinks and left. read more

This is the hotel restaurant/bar located in the lobby at the Inn at Harbor Shores. Nice views of the water with great outdoor seating as well. The bartenders are excellent and so friendly to make you feel at home during your stay. We hung out at the bar alot throughout a friend's big wedding weekend here and only wished they would stay open later for after party festivities! The cocktail menu is great with vast selections of everything. I liked the espresso martini, mi casa es us casa, and spicy margarita. Ordered a single drink and a Ruben sandwich? My girlfriend ordered shrimp and grits. Drink came after 10-15 min which I brushed off, the food didn't come at all. After 45 minutes I had to look for our server and ask her about our food, said it'll take another 15-20 minutes. I'm no specialist when it comes to restaurant services but I think an hour plus for a sandwich and shrimp and grits seems a bit much. Another reason for the 1 star is because there was no update from the server or even checking on us. read more

I did not like the tomato jam, cheese, or the sweet pickles on it. I would not get this again. The service is friendly and the decor is nice. I have given it a few tries but Plank's is a bit overpriced with average food. The norm in this area it seems. I was here awhile ago for breakfast and did not love the eggs benedict. We found Plank's Tavern on a weekend visit to St. Joes. With the restaurant being inside a hotel, we don't really know what to expect. We were seated on the outdoor patio for lunch, right on the water. Their outdoor seating is very cute with flowers and comfortable lawn chairs. The food we ordered was very tasty and fresh. My husband had the fried chicken and biscuits, and I ordered the smash burger. We shared and everything was done well. Service was a bit slow, but it was a busy weekend. Found this very nice waterside restaurant during a coastal road trip in Michigan. Surprisingly, it is a hotel restaurant, located in the Inn at Harbor Shores. We stopped during the lunch hour and although it was not the weekend, the restaurant offered a brunch menu with a lot of choices. We sat outside, near the water--and to deter unwanted flying "bugs," the restaurant had installed a plexiglass half-wall next to the outdoor eating space. Ordered the Breakfast Board as I wanted something light--just a bagel and lox. Served on a long wood board, the dish came loaded with accompaniments---goat cheese, hard boiled egg, pimento cheese, roasted bell peppers, sausage and fruit. Switched out the sausage for bacon. Way too much to eat for one person--but since it only came with one bagel, it really wasn't a shareable as described on the menu. Love pimento cheese but not a fan of this version. It was way too creamy, like a pudding, but everything else served on the "Board" was delicious and fresh. Husband ordered the Eggs Benedict and enjoyed it. First cup of coffee was very weak--tasted as if the coffee packet had not been changed before brewing. Server made a new pot with a new coffee packet and it was fine. Service was a little slow but the restaurant was busy. Waiting on food and the bill wasn't bad as it gave us more time to enjoy the water and boat watching. Restaurant very clean--including the plexiglass wall, and the hotel lobby walls are decorated with fun upcycled art fish sculptures. read more

We spent the nigh tin Benton Harbor/St Joseph on our recent trip home from visiting the kids. We wanted to sit on the water as it was a beautiful late April evening. We found Plank's on the River through Yelp. It is in the lobby of the Harbor Shores Resort located on the St Joseph river. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor terrace has a great view of the river, and nifty glass panels that can be slid up to block the wind. The one downside here is that across the river is where Dock 63, an aggregate supplier, keeps their piles/mounds/mountains of crushed rock. Not very scenic. Otherwise, the bend in the river is lovely. We were pleasantly surprised with our food, and our server was great. I had a lovely Norwegian Sea Trout over delicious mashed potatoes loaded with butter (yum), spinach, baby greens and fish roe. It was beautiful, well cooked and yummy. I would totally get this again. My husband had the ribs, and he was happy (and let me tell you, my hubby smokes the BEST ribs). I had the Tuscan Lemon Drop cocktail, and it was as tasty as it was beautiful. After dinner, we had a drink sitting in the Adirondack chairs available along the river. Very relaxing. If you are even in St Joseph, MI and looking for a nice meal with a good view, definitely try Planks. read more

I had the breakfast burrito. It had good flavor with lots of ingredients, but the tortilla was very tough. Almost like you would have to cut it with a steak knife.
