I don't know what her problem is but for patrons to come to the restaurant to spend money during the pandemic you would think her tone and attitude would be better. I came on a Sunday for Happy Hour/dinner. When I walked in, I awkwardly waited around to be seated. I guess from start the finish, service was pretty terrible. Service was pretty slow and the food was not that appetizing. I've been here for brunch in the past and had better service but for some reason, it was really off that day. It took awhile for us to get our drinks, for our waters to be refiled, the service was hardly present. I don't really understand why the service was lacking...especially since the restaurant was hardly busy. I was a bit disappointed in the Happy Hour drinks offered and with the prices as well. I got the tuna tartare taco ($4) and the grilled fish taco ($4) from the Happy Hour menu. Of the two I thought the tuna taco was far more enjoyable. I also shared the Sunday/Monday Fried Chicken Special with my husband. I have to say I was pretty embarrassed with it. The chicken pieces were on the smaller side and everything on the plate from the chicken to the cornbread was just bland and just disappointing. There was some sort of gravy (I think?) on the fried chicken and it was just terrible. My brother had ordered the Fried Chicken Special as well and was also really sad that he had ordered it. My sister-in-law had ordered a half cheese and meat platter and I have to say it was one of the worst I have ever seen and tasted. Already on my "do not go" list for a myriad of bad experiences, I had to be a good sport when it became the lunch destination of a beloved friend. Well, they WERE still in business despite a poor local reputation, so perhaps they've actually listened and cleaned up their act. WRONG!! This is the same lackluster den with the same love-starved food thrown so carelessly on the plate it seemed drenched in sarcasm. The salad was a dried, tasteless, though mercifully tiny excuse for chicken on an abundant bed of lonely iceberg lettuce unsaved by a flavorless dressing. To add insult to injury, the overriding mood of this dismal place is set by an unwelcoming staff unable to hide some vague annoyance at who knows what. This place has not changed and likely never will. How on earth do they stay in business? read more

Plate 38 is definitely has potential to become one of our neighborhood staples. We prefer it at brunch over dinner but the food at both is really excellent. I am a huge fan of potato pancakes. I rarely order them because they usually come with nothing else except sour cream and apple sauce. And although I am a fan, I don't like them so much that I'd give up a protein and a vegetable and forgo a proper meal. Plate 38 solves my dilemma with a Potato Rosti on their breakfast menu, a shredded potato cake topped with smoked salmon, cucumber chive creme fraiche, thin slivers of red onion, slices of heirloom tomato, sunny side up eggs, and fried capers. The potato cake was a bit over-fried at the edges but it was still the most fabulous base because there was both crispness and the soft bits of potato as it moistened over time. It had all the flavors I love in a bagel and lox: salty fish, sweet tomato, cooling creme fraiche, and the salty bursts of the fried capers. John got the Plate 38 sunrise, a somewhat ordinary breakfast plate consisting of eggs, breakfast meat, potatoes, or toast. The over medium eggs, roasted potatoes, and chicken sausage were all fine but not memorable. John opted for the buttermilk biscuit as the toast and it was spectacular. The biscuit was warm and soft, not unlike a really good British scone. It was served with three condiments: a vanilla infused butter, honey, and homemade raspberry preserves. I topped each bite with the butter and raspberry. While it was excellent, the rest of his breakfast suffered because it could have really used a piece of toast to sop egg yolks. The excellent biscuits were also a few dollar up-charge, which is well worth it but still came as a bit of a surprise to us because the waiter didn't mention it. Staff quickly rebounded and took the charge off the bill. We returned for dinner a short while later. At dinner, the pricing is a little higher. For a neighborhood spot with a less than impressive structure, I would have hoped that they targeted the $15-$20 entree price. Burgers are almost all under $10 which is great, but the rest of the options are $20+. John ordered the pappardelle with tomatoes and grilled chicken. The sauce was delicious, flavorful with herbs and tomato and garlic. My buttermilk fried cornish hen was a really good version of a comfort dish. The bird was moist and the batter was just the way I like it, thin and crisp and flavorful with a lot of salt and spices. The gravy enhanced everything, with a rich, chicken jus base. Part of the reason I ordered it was because it came with a buttermilk biscuit. I asked for some of the vanilla butter to accompany it. It was warm and flaky. With the sweet butter melting into it, it the best dessert I could think of. read more

Sarah the Bartendar w the wrinkly face and no make up has a very bad rude attitude and she's very pretentious. I sent my two good girlfriends over to plate 38 for their happy hour because I had had a good experience there with a male bartender or he was possibly the manager however this woman was so rude to my friends before I got there that they did not want to stay. When I went up to her to explain to her why we were leaving she was rude to me as well . she did not make an attempt to say she was sorry she only made an attempt to ignore my complaint and accepted absolutely no accountability for her actions . when I told her that I hope she would have a better day and that she would be losing our business she said "no thank you I've had a great day" . Very snobby very pretentious like "who cares about you or what you have to say" like a rude stuck up spoiled brat. This is a woman who has now lost your business one loyal customer and two potential customers because of her terrible attitude towards her patrons. Why you keep her on staff I will never understand if I decide to go back there and I see her face I will turn around I'll probably call the bar first and make sure she's not working. I'm not used to people like her working in the service industry . My friends were not greeted when they walked in and when she went up to them at the table where they were sitting instead of saying hello or welcome she said "next time before you see yourself down come up to the bar and tell us you are here so WE CAN SEAT YOU!" Wow what customer service!!! what a welcome they received ! Ehhh, this place certainly does seem to be hit or miss. Blueberry Ricotta pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries: this isn't served with blueberry syrup as noted on the menu but I preferred it with regular syrup anyway. 3 small pancakes that were yummy but what took it over the edge was the dollop of the sweetest whip cream ever. This dish tastes more like a dessert than breakfast but was very much enjoyed along with a $2.75 coffee! Steep price for a cup of coffee but there are free refills, as there should be, for that price. Eggs, bacon, and potatoes: The reason I changed my order from a chicken dish to this dish last minute was because the table next to us was eating this and it looked fantastic. Everything looked jumbo and oh so abundant. Well, when I received my plate, it was puny. Scrambled eggs were limp and runny?!!!, potatoes were tiny and 1/4 of the size of the other plate that I was drooling over, and the toast was one slice of white bread cut up in half which I didn't touch. 2 slices of thick bacon were the only thing that actually didn't get messed up. Plate 38 has great happy hour and I ordered the skirt steak with garlic fries. For happy hour, our table ordered oysters. I believe they are $1/oyster and they are prepared well and they didn't have any shell fragments like some higher end oyster bars. Come here for happy hour. The entrees here are a hit or miss. The skirt steak was good but majority of the table ordered some giant short rib special? I'm not too sure what it was but it was a giant bone with some bit of meat hanging onto it. I'm being generous with both stars. Friday night, 4 people. Seated right away and told we will be brought menus. Waiter comes by 10 minutes later, says he will bring menus. 10 more minutes go by and we still have no menus. Finally my friends wife gets up and gets then for us. We should have taken that as a sign to leave. Our waiter comes and asks what we would like to order, no drinks, just what would you like. We ordered one regular burger, one truffle burger, 3 orders of garlic fires, the angel hair pasta dish, and a Caesar salad with chicken. 2 12 oz hefs and water. The fries come out as appetizers, only 2 of the three come out. next comes the water and then 2 very small glasses of hef, no way was that 12 oz, it tasted great but for $6 a pop!!!!!!!!!!! holy moly! We were all so into our conversation that we did not notice that it took a good 30 minutes for our food to arrive, the fries were done the beer was gone, water glasses empty when the food arrived. The burgers looked good and were a good size. The "angel hair" pasta was not even close to being angel hair. It was soggy spaghetti with way too much extra stuff in it, see the pic i added for this and tell me if you think that is angel hair pasta. It looked like it came out of a microwave and filled half of a small plate, $12.50! The Caesar salad was the worst of all. Less than half the small plate it was served in, soggy, obviously was sitting for a while, chicken was barely warm, croutons tasted like cubes of salt and the chicken was way over-salted, how much for that dish you ask? $12!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? I'm not sure what this place is trying to be with their tiny portions and extreme prices but it's NOT working. Servers look incredibly inexperienced (i saw each one almost drop drink trays while removing glasses, if you've ever served you know what I'm talking about) they all looked scared and nervous like it was their first time serving. Unfortunately the food does not make up for the service. I'm not sure what all these reviewers are seeing in this place, i suspect they are friends/relatives of employees, it can be the only way someone would give more than 2 stars. If you want to try it by all means but you've been warned, bad service, bad food, small portions, high prices ($40 for two people!!), so not worth it. Elements Cafe, I still love you. Plate 38 is a casual restaurant with delicious food plated beautifully. There's always a line, but they have a lot of seating (patio too!) so there's never a long wait. Quick service too! We ordered the lox plate and the salmon burger along with the fries. The lox was to die for while it paired perfectly with the arugula salad. The salmon in the burger was made perfectly- not dry at all! As for the fries- skip it and use your calories some where else... This isn't the cheapest place for friends on a budget, but the food is definitely made for something a little more special than a daily brunch spot. read more

This is one of our favorite places to dine in Pasadena. Friendly servers, who will almost always immediately tell you that it is a chef owned restaurant. The ingredients are fresh, the dishes are creative, the food is delicious. While dinner can is priced on the higher end of the spectrum, the happy hour menu is a phenomenally good value. The chicken wings are probably some of the best I've had. The calamari and rock shrimp small plate is INCREDIBLE. Come with a group, order half the menu, enjoy everything. Sigh.... I don't even know where I should begin... The place was full when we arrive so we had to wait for 20 mins. The restaurant was so busy that the host became our waiter but wasn't very helpful when we sled her some questions on the menu. She was very apologetic and did tell us she was new. I know she was trying to help the restaurant out but I blame the manager for putting her on the floor when she's not ready to be a server. She should be more knowledgeable of the menu before she starts taking ppl's orders. We ordered the from the happy hour menu. I had the tacos, small salsa and I shared a mushroom burger with my bf. My friend ordered the burger but requested to make some modification. It took awhile for the burgers to come out. And when the burgers did come out, both of the burgers we ordered were wrong. I was too hungry so I just ate whatever they served me. My friend was a bit more picky so he sent his order back. I feel the staff are friendly but the business just seems very unorganized. They did fix their mistakes but it took them a few tries to get it right. I would say the food was decent. It was around 8 PM on Saturday and we had just had dinner at a friends house in Pasadena and it was time for a drink. i had been down in old town earlier and I i really did not want to brave the chaos that is parking down there so we decided to drive a little further down Colorado. This place is great. Its not overcrowded and a very nice atmosphere. It was freezing cold outside but when we came in it was warm with Christmas decorations and lots of booze. There is a very cute patio area equipped with heat lamps and lights. Please try the bread pudding. It is amazing. its soft and crunch with custard, fruit, powdered sugar and ....drizzled with NUTELLA! perfection. This is a chill place to get a drink away from the crowds. Happy hour is 4-6pm and 9pm-close! Came mainly for their happy hour oyster deal, since I was already in Old Town Pasadena. Their oysters are extremely fresh and only $1.50 per half shell! Definitely try some of their happy hour drinks as well. They really don't skimp you on the alcohol mix, which made me more willing when I ordered one of their $7 happy hour drinks. Here's what to get for happy hour: 1. Oysters on the half shell ($1.50)-- the oysters are super fresh! They come with horseradish and a spicy/tomato lemon sauce. YUM! 2. Mushroom Bruschetta ($3.50)-- I expected some mushrooms on a crunchy bruschetta, but this one was nothing compared to my expectations. The mushroom was grilled with some onions until perfection and the bread wasn't super crispy, but still rather chewy! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! 3. Duck Slider ($3.50)-- slider with fig compote and arugula. Not a bad choice to try, just rather small for the price. 4. Tuna Taco ($3.50)-- Definitely give this one a try! The taco shell wasn't like the texture and crispiness of regular taco shells. This one is on the thinner side, maybe like chips? Comes with avocado and cilantro creme inside the taco. Came here for lunch today and they have two great outdoor dining areas. But the problem was they do not have the staff to accommodate both areas. They have one bartender girl and a guy who doesn't seem to know what his role is. We were seated and given glasses of water. Then sat there for 20 min without having anyone come to our table. The older guy next to us was waving his menu in the air like he just don't care trying to get one of the twos attention and finally had the guy come after 5 min of waving. His response was "we are busy serving the other outdoor dining area". It was at that point that we decided it was time to go without ordering. So impressed by this place. I was driving through Pasadena while on a shopping trip and saw that it was currently happy hour. I was thirsty.. My mom was thirsty.. And my brother was hungry. When the traffic light turned green, I turned into the parking lot and we made our way inside... We were seated quickly, and the staff was lovely. I loved the inviting and relaxing ambience that you can only find in Pasadena. The music was on point (Arctic Monkey, Fitz and the Tantrum, etc.) and the food was delightful. Here is what we ordered: - grilled cheese with fries: the grilled cheese was sandwiched between two thickly sliced, slightly buttered toasted bread. It was the most delicious grilled cheese sandwich ever. Wished I got tomato soup to pair with my grilled cheese sandwich. - garlic herb fries: the fries are thinly sliced and slightly garnished with garlic salt and dried parsley. - oysters: SO FREAKING AMAZING. The oysters were fresh and clean. The house sauce that came with it was so UNIQUE. I absolutely loved it. - house red wine: the red wine was rich in flavor. So refreshing. I am only giving it a three for the truffle fries. If you are a 20 or 30 something hipster that thrives on being ignored in a overpriced atmosphere, belly up. If you are an adult that likes good service, good drinks and good food, go to Lucky Baldwin's down the street. My girlfriend and I were semi regulars at this place for a while. We liked the wine list. The service is very slow and we were often dismissed or ignored. But when someone younger than me walked in, they were seated quickly and served first and treated better. It was clear I was not their demographic. I am sorry if I like to feel welcome in a place I am spending my money. Speaking of which, last time we were the there (and we are never going back - and we eat out a lot and it's off our list) our credit cards were hacked by their machine and shut down. I can't wait to come back and try a little more from this little restaurant. Having eyeballed the name of Plate 38 on many passings, I finally dropped in for a brief late dinner with a friend a few weeks ago. We weren't sure when they closed or how busy they were, but it was a weeknight, and the place only had a couple of tables. The service was incredibly friendly, though very quiet, making it a bit difficult to hear them. Looking around, the place has indoor and outdoor seating, even some comfy couches if you want to lounge around for a beer or glass of wine. The beer list is very decent, as is the wine list, and my favorite part - if you don't feel like alcohol - is that they have ginger ale.... in the soda fountain. YES! Finally! A place that doesn't just give you a bottle of ginger ale. REFILLS for all! My friend decided to stay small, but filling with the Four Cheese Sexy Mac. We were expecting that, given the description, it would be overly rich, but it was a surprisingly nice combination of cheeses, pasta, leeks and ham. Not overly rich, but warm and melty. I went ahead and tried the offered salmon special with house-made gnocchi some freshly cooked vegetables (spinach, tomato, etc) and a sort of tomato shrimp sauce. I loved the presentation - it had color and freshness. The flavors were balanced, but far from over-powering, which was perfect because it let the fresh huge piece of salmon shine through. Pink, soft, succulent salmon. I was in love, especially since I am VERY slowly entering the world of fish. A place I used to abhor greatly. We did order some gingered sweet potato fries, but in all honesty, they were pretty lacklustre compared to our other options on the table. They came with a side of regular ketchup and a side of regular ranch. My friend enjoyed them enough, but I felt they fell short of expectation. And then.... there was dessert. While they have a small dessert menu, we ignored it in favor of the special off-the-menu dessert that was being offered: A 4-taster of creme brulee. Now, the moment you say "creme brulee," my friend and I are pretty much decided, but then they went and told us the types. 1. A creme brulee with a thick gooey ribbon of rich chocolate hidden under a crispy sugar shell. 2. A berry and molasses creme brulee. Dark purple and lovely. 3. An apple-walnut creme brulee. Surprising with a beautiful buttery smokiness of the walnuts, and the great texture of diced apples that are blisteringly soft with the skin still on. 4. Lavender Honey. 'Nuff Said. All four had that perfect crisp sugar shell on top. The kind you have to tap on to crack. Whoever worked the torch in the back has officially perfected the technique, and I loved all four types. They were each special and each decadent. Note: Even the whipped cream on top was good fresh cream. I don't know if there was any booze in it, but it doesn't hurt to ask. And the berries were ripe and fresh. It's enough for 3-4 people to share all of that flavorful glory. Sharing is caring. I would love that to be a permanent part of their menu. Oh, and I saw them bring an order of their Buttermilk Fried Cornish Game Hen. It smelled amazing and looked amazing. Mouth watered a little as they walked by with it. I have been here a few times now and I must admit that service has gotten a whole lot better since the first time i have dined here. My first experience here was horrible. Nice to see the service staff is more efficient and attentive. Orders are taken and whatever we needed we got right away. Food taste better. The Happy hour food/menu is pretty good. Taste good. Oysters happy hour is everyday 4-6 $1 and 9pm-close $1.50. Thurs nights they have a live band that plays. Pretty nice ambience inside and outside seating. Cheese Platter $16 comes w/ toasted raisin bran bread slices. However I think the slice portion pieces on this cheese platter are way too small for this amount. The menu, food and service warranted a 3-4 star review. But, the time I was there with my family (brunch tIme during the weekend), we saw a couple eating at the bar, and one table well inside the building. One table was at the border of the inside / outside space and I am not counting that one. When I say inside, I mean in the nook right beyond the entrance. In addition, patrons were walking to and from the bathroom / outside without masks, and nobody in the restaurant was making an effort to enforce the rule. I get it. Some people are not cooperating. It is really hard. As a former waitress / bartender, I get it. But for the sake of your patrons and for your truly amazing staff, please please try. read more

My neighbor friend and I have been trying out nice, dog friendly places to eat and she told me about this cute little place so we decided to have our dog date here. We were able to sit in the small outdoor area and the first thing I noticed was the incredible architecture. The doors slide open, creating an open feel from the inside and out. I loved the interior but did not really love the ourdoor furniture. I think the chairs were way too high for the tables... Yes, I am short with short limbs... couldn't reach the floor... but the table was so low that It was pretty uncomfortable. I'd suggest getting taller tables or shorter chairs. Other than my dumb complaint, everything was... oh so very good! My bff and I came here after her sister suggested it to us for a place to try for dinner. Upon arriving, my eyes were drawn to the bar. The bar is the main decor in some sense with neatly organized shelves with different hard alcs lined across the way, a flat screen tv playing the stanley cup playoffs and a wooden bar counter that had a nice sheen coating. There were indoor and outdoor patio sitting options. We sat inside. The cocktail menu had a pretty good variety that would appeal to a girl. I dont remember exactly what we ordered but both of our drinks were tasty. Not heavy on the alcohol taste, but still had a good amount of alcohol because TO MY SURPRISE, I was starting to get buzzed. VERY STRANGE since I am usually a tank! lol. Food menu had a variety of typical American food ranging from burgers to steak. My friend ordered rotisserie chicken, and I ordered skirt steak. Both were tasty and delicious. I ate everything off my plate. You can say I was rather pleased. As for dessert we ordered Apple tart. It was very goodddd!! Apple tart was a little too sweet, but the ice cream did a good job to balance it out. Overall, good experience. I cannot complain. But my friend and I agree that perhaps we could get better for the amount we paid. That is why I give it 4 stars. But I will recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a good place to eat in Pasadena :) read more

Right when you walk in the restaurant looks very nice! It's not a big place so it can get crowded! There's an outdoor area which is good otherwise the restaurant would be so tiny ! There is a happy hour menu that is available everyday from 4-6pm and 9-close ! It ranges from $1-$4.50 which is very cheap! We ordered two things from here: the skirt steak quesadilla and the mushroom bruschetta ! Both were fairly good ! I felt that the bruschetta was a bit sweet, but other than that the bread was crispy and it had a hint of truffle oil in it! From the regular menu we ordered the four cheese sexy mac which cost $8.50. It's definitely not worth the price... It didn't taste THAT good. I feel like my boyfriends Mac an cheese that he makes at home tastes better! It also has ham in it and I asked if they could take it out because I don't eat meat, but they said it's already made like that -_- We also got the Caesar salad which was $12.... Definitely not worth it ! It was a fairly small salad and the bread was rock hard ! The garlic herb fries was $4.50... Now this was delicious ! I love skinny fries because they're not too potato-y! Thicker fries make me more thirsty and just makes my mouth dry ! There wasn't a garlic taste to these fries though... Which was kind of disappointing :( read more

This is a family favorite! We come here often with our pup and air on the patio. They have so many amazing menu options and a huge variety. We come for the oysters and stay for the rest! The chili in the winter was incredible. Their tacos during happy hour are pretty delicious as well! read more
