To start out. I am visiting for business and anytime i pass by a Houston's i get excited because of all the good food and experiences i have had at other Houstons Properties. Unfortunately, this location fell far below expectations. The hostess was rude and requested i turn my phone down when the volume was not high. I am sitting at the bar alone and was listening to a podcast while waiting for my food. Keep in mind its lunch (2pm the place is packed and loud itself with the kitchen and people talking. Yet i was called out and embarrassed for listening to a person talk that was on my phone. To not make a scene i finished my meal which didnt taste right because the whole mood had changed. Then i see they give hot moist towels to every new person who sits down to clean their hands but i was never offered this. It seems to be I was not welcomed here. A letter to Hillstone's corporate office Rating: Negative 5, Pasadena June 21, 2026 Hello, On Saturday evening in the 9pm hour, I came to your Pasadena location and this is what I asked for: a 1/2 Iced Tea, 1/2 Pineapple juice mixed beverage, comparable to an Arnold Palmer. But you're using Pineapple juice instead of lemonade: Directions: fill one glass half way with iced tea. Then top off with a can of Dole's Pineapple Juice which looks like this (below) when mixed [with a straw] by a customer. The pineapple takes the bitterness off the tea and the tea takes the tart off the pineapple. But instead, what was set before me by the Pasadena bartender was this: a whole glass of iced tea and a whole glass of pineapple juice. The expectation was for the customer to mix these two glasses together somehow with no respect for the mess I would surely make. I politely asked the bartender if he would please mix this into one glass for me and he replied that we're not allowed to do that. And I replied I'm pretty sure you can mix this. I order it all the time, [not just in Pasadena, but in your Park Ave. S., SF and Chicago (closed) locations over the past ten plus years]. The bartender made reference to his manager and I said well maybe you should go get your manager. Now bothered, the bartender immediately leaves the bar and speaks to his manager. A minute later, the manager comes over to me, standing close to my right shoulder and echoes the sentiment of the bartender. I replied to the manager, Albert, how in the world was I supposed to mix a half and half of pineapple iced tea with two full glasses of each beverage? (Mathematically, it is impossible.) He tried his best not to understand what I was saying, which I considered insulting, just to hold his ground and not look silly. I sighed, got up and said, "this is stupid" and left. It was clear neither one of them wanted to serve me, an African American male. I was there probably 15-20 minutes. You should know I have been a proud patron of your locations from coast to coast for 9-12 months at a time. Allow me to indulge. When I worked on a TV show for HGTV in lower Manhattan, it was your Park Ave. S. location where I ordered either a burger or your Hawaiian Rib Eye to compliment a successful day of producing and editing. I was living the life. I'd hop on the train near Wall Street/Exchange and be at that location within 20-30 minutes. Over the course of those 9 months I lived in NYC, your dedicated bartenders would actually begin to greet me with-say it with me-a half and half of pineapple iced tea. It was so touching. It screamed, "You matter to us." - seriously. When it was time for me to go and move to San Francisco, your staff did the unthinkable. They comp'ed me a whole Hawaiian Rib Eye. I was literally choked up with joy. Apparently, they had been keeping track of the number of times per week I had sat at the bar for dinner and lunch on the weekends. Your Park Ave. S. location gave a place of comfort and familiarity. Those bartenders in 2015 made it incredibly hard to leave. But they were a part of my NYC experience. So, I moved to the Bay Area and I quickly discovered "the food that cannot go wrong" was in SF. One of your locations was just a Lyft ride away from Oakland. And I began the same routine: work hard during the day and treat myself to a half and half, pineapple iced tea, along with your burger-nothing on it except cheddar, swiss and bacon with a side of bbq sauce. And because I am single, I sat at the bar and I began getting to know this set of Hilstonians. A year later after editing that show and directing a short that went to Cannes, your wonderful, kind, sweet, engaging folks comped yet another parting Hawaiian Rib Eye. And I said to myself, "What are these people trying to do to me?" . And the same thing happened when I moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern's journalism program. Bandara's became my spot to eat that burger and drink a half and half pineapple iced tea. And I was greeted at the bar by someone I met at your Park Ave. S. location in NYC. Your food is synonymous with warm greetings, success and rewarding one's self for doing hard work. I've grown accustomed to the standards put in place by those folks in the corporate office. I love Houston's! This location is very cool because of the koy fish outside. We had wonderful service and the ambiance is always nice and relaxed with the dim lighting. The spinach dip was of course absolutely delicious and my two year old loved the chips. I love how they refill the chips without asking when seeing we could use more. I really enjoyed the crab cakes and braised red cabbage. I mean the dabs of goat cheese just send the cabbage over the top as an awesome choice. It wasn't after 5pm so sadly, no baked potato for me. This was my first time at any of the Hillstone restaurants and it did not disappoint. We had reservations and was seated relatively quickly, highly recommend making a reservation. What a fantastic birthday surprise! My girlfriend blindfolded me and refused to tell me where we were going for my 49th birthday. I had no idea what to expect, but wow... she absolutely nailed it! We were a couple of minutes early and they already had a table set up for me and my wife. Leilani was our server and she was simply amazing! The Hawaiian ribeye flavor is on point, but 80% was fat which was dissatisfying. If this steak was edible, I'd definitely be able to recommend it. Until then I'm not sure it's worth the price. I received a gift card here for $100 from a dear friend of mine. I never tried this place before and wanted to give it a shot. Outside, there's a vast parking lot near the back lot of the place. Me and a friend found one luckily although there may have been way more towards the rear but we were able to find one close by the entrance. Inside is low ambient lighting and a unique layout. Sort of like wood ranch, stone fire barbecue if you ever been. There was a booths to the sides and a massive bar round table where a lot of people were sitting, near the middle were a ton of booths with stairs leading up and down and a nice clean bathroom in the back corner. The AC was ramped up high on a very hot day exceeding 90 degrees outside. Service was excellent, the main waitress we had was pleasant all the way through our time being there. Her energy was incredibly high and she had a natural friendly behavior that is rare to see nowadays. Although it may be because she was hitting on my friend pretty much the entire time. She was flirting, telling him about the drinks and recommended things to order completely ignoring me, but not in a mean way. She was just well, attracted to him. As for the service at the front, the lady that seated us was really nice too. Very friendly, good communication like I never seen before in a lot of places. 5/5 overall in that regard, I felt appreciated and it's very rare to see that respect nowadays. As for the food, well, it is pricey. This is an expensive restaurant without question, but the quality and taste of the food was excellent. Fast service maybe 15 minutes and we got not only the appetizers, but the entree. We ordered sushi 8 piece tuna roll, artichoke dip with sour cream and salsa and chips, my friend got a lemon drop martini the waitress recommended for him because she liked him a lot, I just got water. The water was served in a small glass cup that was nice to grip and drink from. For entrees, I ordered the French dip with au jus and horseradish. It was so dang good. 5/5 in flavor and texture. The horseradish and au jus was so delicious with the sandwich. I also received coleslaw which was meh. My friend ordered the rotisserie chicken plate with greens. It was alright, but nothing spectacular. It was a 4/5 and both dishes were $29 each from what I remember. Not exactly cheap, but it was tasty. Our total was about $133. This exceeded the $100 we initially had. We tipped the waitress for outstanding service. The ambiance was amazing and the seats inside were full and comfy. Since we had a reservation, we were seated pretty quickly and our waters were filled right away. We had already looked over the menu, so we knew exactly what we wanted. My daughter isn't the biggest fan of the regular menu, but they do offer an off-menu grilled cheese with fries, which she loved. Just something to note: they don't have an official kids menu. For our mains, my fiancé and I both ordered the Hawaiian steak with a baked potato, and it was finger-licking good. Super flavorful and cooked perfectly. I also had the raspberry mojito--really refreshing with fresh lime and mint. For dessert, my daughter got the hot fudge sundae and absolutely devoured it. Their artichokes melt in your mouth and tend to sell out early. The cheeseburger is solid all around, while the prime rib sandwich is absolutely mouthwatering. I saw that the Houston's/Hillstone restaurant empire has an online following, and it makes so much sense. The type of food honestly gives upscale chilis, but in a very quality ingredients way. If it's your first time: highly highly recommend the prime rib sandwich and the spinach dip. The ribeye is good too if you'd like a steak. I've been to a good amount of restaurants in LA and Houston's is pretty high up there on my list because I love the French prime rib dip sandwich and the ribeye steak is delicious and below $60 (which is a steal in this area for steakhouses). Stopped in at Houston's restaurant at 320 S. Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena for a quick cocktail and appetizer. Heads up make reservations to avoid the long wait this is a popular spot and very trendy. When you first walk in you have this amazing ambience then you enter the restaurant everything is like a well oil machine. You get to see the chefs at work behind the kitchen and you see the active bar in all the players that Houston has are well trained, and polite and wonderful. The food is absolutely delicious. Loved this restaurant. Made a reservation here on a weekend and was seated within 15 mins or so. Prompt service at the table to order drinks and apps. Spinach dip and drinks were a great start and the entree was really good. I keep thinking about the Hawaiian ribeye. Portion was a good size for 2 people to share.
