They lost our dinner order for a lamb dish and tried to fix it by bring a dish called "linguine with clams" which was a garbage dish of spaghetti and no clams or anything else. We spent over $400 bringing some guests from Washington, DC who are about to fund a major program at UCLA and this place was a total embarrassment. Management should be fired. read more

With a large group of friends, this was definitely the restaurant for a nice dinner on campus. In the midst of a good time, I was craving the Grilled Spanish Octopus and the Chicken Pesto, which I ended up ordering. The former was a starter that contained "applewood smoked bason, frisee, cherry tomatoes, smoked bean purée, and green harissa". The latter had "cavatelli, jidori chicken, cherry tomatoes, and market beans". The combination sounded amazing. I ordered a glass of Merlot as well and it was such a nice treat. After everyone ordered and received their meals, it felt that the entire dinner menu was on the table. Each plate looked amazing. I was not able to finish both of my plates on my own, but luckily, I got some help from a couple of my friends who enjoyed each dish as well. Our experience at this restaurant was unacceptable. From the moment we arrived, the manager was rude, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. What really pushed this over the edge was how we were treated because of our service dog. Instead of being welcomed like any other customer, we were immediately questioned about the legitimacy of our dog -- in a tone that was accusatory and downright hostile. The manager seemed completely unaware (or just didn't care) about the laws protecting individuals with service animals. It was embarrassing, stressful, and completely unnecessary. We tried to explain calmly, but the attitude never changed. We were made to feel like we didn't belong. The rest of the staff seemed uneasy too, probably because of how their manager was handling things. This is not how anyone should be treated -- especially when following the law and just trying to enjoy a meal. So sad!! Plateia used to be one of my favorites but tonight's visit was a disappointment. We were seated around 6:30 and waited over an hour for our food. Around the 45 min mark we checked in to make sure they didn't forget our order, and the manager came out and said our pizzas were close to done but they were waiting on the steelhead trout. We only ordered 2 pizzas and the steelhead trout for reference. They explained they had two large parties inside that they were busy with, but we had been sitting out in sub 60 degree weather for a while without any word. Staff was friendly, and really appreciated the manager coming out but we felt forgotten before and after our meal while waiting for the check. After the manager checked in we asked if we could have some bread while we wait, and they were kind enough to accommodate. They also gave my friend the wrong drink, but instead of throwing the wrong one away they just let us keep it which was nice. It somewhat made up for the poor service, but honestly I don't think I'll be coming back again, which is unfortunate because you can see from my other reviews that I really enjoyed this spot! I tried the Margherita pizza this time, but you could tell it had been sitting under the heat lamp for quite a while. Didn't taste fresh, lacked flavor overall. This is a great place to have a hearty breakfast. This was my first visit again, but unlike the experiences I've had elsewhere, here I received a big smile, a warm welcome, and great service. The food was great, I ordered an omelet breakfast and a cup of latte. The set meal also came with sourdough bread as a side dish, which I loved. Had dinner tonight with my daughter who attends UCLA and her roommate and two of her older siblings. We're staying at the Luskin Conference Center/Hotel and all flew in today so it was very convenient to have our first meal together at Plateia. The space is off the lobby of the Luskin and there's a beautiful outside area as well but it was too chilly to dine al fresco tonight. Inside is well spaced out and not noisy at all - we had a table in the back right corner and there was plenty of room for the five of us. The hotel provided us with two free drinks (house wine, beer, or non-alcoholic beverage). Two of the kids tried the lavender lemonade (VERY strong lavender), and the strawberry lemonade (good). We ordered the winter gem lettuce salad (way too much dressing, next time order it on the side), sauteed calamari and hummus (very good, came with warm pita) to share to start. For the entrees we ordered two pizza (vegetarian, meat - both very good), duck (they suggested medium rare but we were glad we said medium instead) which came with two pieces of polenta (very good), roast chicken (very good), and mushroom tagliatelle (good - I liked the variety and plentiful mushrooms, there were only a few broccoli, and the pasta did not seem homemade and was a little chewy - not al dente chewy but maybe a little undercooked). It was nice to add some of the roasted chicken to the pasta dish. For dessert we had the chocolate cake (which came with all kinds of sauces, layered chocolate on top of something - spicy? - we thought it was weird), basque cheesecake (goat cheese, not everyone liked it at first but said it grew on them), dark chocolate and vanilla gelato and lemon sorbetto (excellent). I'd recommend Plateia for a nice dinner when visiting UCLA and treating the roommates who don't have time to go further. Surprising no service fee/tip on the bill. My son is an undergrad at ucla working at a lab this summer. Seated indoors . We were denied outdoor seating even though no one was outside and tables open. We were told however that if we wait 15 minutes we could be seated outdoors as staffing was in transition. I was really hoping to sit outdoors on the lovely patio this lovely evening but there was absolutely no bending of the strict seating policy. We were sad that bending the strict protocol was so rigid. The food is creative, fresh, and overall delicious. Attention to detail is seen in plating of the food. Compliments to the kitchen staff and chef ! We loved the small details: The sour roasted cherries with the large pork chop and buttery perfectly seasoned mashed Yukon potatoes melt in your mouth. The steelhead trout was seared just right and crisp on the exterior while the flesh was fall apart flaky. The details? The puréed carrot dollops were sweet and buttery like a small treat placed around the entree. The yellow lemon cream sauce was doused around the plate to compliment the trout. The small colorful organic baby carrots with stems on were perfectly roasted. The long beans were fresh and colorful. The panko crusted swordfish was a bit thick with batter but fresh. The details ? The stewed vegetable beans and arugula salad with micro cherry tomatoes as sweet as candy were worth mentioning and my dinner guest noted the sides outshined the main entree. We recommend the trout and pork chops without hesitation. All their salads are delicious ,fresh, and picked ripe, crisp and will likely always be stars of the table. Yummy desserts : The desserts ? Our favorites ? Chocolate ! Also the fruit cobbler like dessert with the ice cream. We ate every last drop. The cheese cake was the perfect texture but the goat cheese experimentation in the cake was a bit overwhelming for a dessert. If goat cheese is a must please add dried glazed apricot and chopped hazelnuts . Suggestions : octopus appetizer: The sear lacks higher heat crispness and the meat seemed overly salted. I wonder if the octopus had been brined. It was plated beautifully, with beans, lemon doused arugula and bacon. The desserts are fabulous ! Get them all. Sit outside if the weather permits. Worth while. Also I beg the establishment to please change the seating protocols so that if the restaurant looks empty the reservationist reserves the right to grant the patron a seat indoor, outdoors, or at a specific table location. Rigidity in hospitality is a no no and the management should allow for some wiggle room. Expect summer time staffing shortages at this restaurant. It is summer break at ucla so perhaps their pool of wait staff have left for Summer. We enjoyed our food and recommend !! Part 2. Lovely restaurant in the heart of the UCLA campus in the Luskin building. We came for dinner before a performance at Royce Hall, which is about a 10 minute walk through the beautiful campus. They serve brunch, lunch and dinner. Seating outside surrounded by olive trees and succulents is a wonderful setting. They offered heat lamps for the chilling weather even though they got a little too hot. We started with the calamari hummus with pita bread that was delicious. I had the Jodori chicken and my husband had the duck. Both were excellent and well prepared. Wine list is really good. They offer most everything by the glass, which amounts to 10-12 wines to choose from. Husband started with an old fashioned that he said was made well. We opted for outside seating because the inside is really loud. The sounds from the bar really carry through the acoustics. I'm not one for loud places, so the patio was very welcoming. Server was good, but needed more consistency and we had to flag him down a few times. On the whole it was slow. Manager walked table to table checking on people, which is always a really nice touch I wish more restaurants did. I would come back. Dined here for lunch with a party of 8 and got seated quickly after checking in for our reservation. For a hotel restaurant, there was actually a good amount of dishes to choose from. With a range of $20-$30 for most entrees, this place was not as expensive as I expected. The price is quite respectable tbh. They also don't accept tip so I can only imagine the staff gets paid well, or tip is integrated into the food costs. Our server was very kind and easily accessible to ask questions about the menu or get refills on water. I ordered the seafood risotto ($28) and later the basque burnt cheesecake ($12) for dessert. My friends ordered several other dishes. The risotto tasted good with the rice being al dente and the seafood being cut small enough to where I didn't need to ever use my knife to cut anything. Unlike my risotto experience at Hell's Kitchen, this risotto was not overly salty and seasoned just right. The portion was also large enough to where I felt satisfied after finishing. The basque burnt cheesecake was good as well, with the custard-like texture being of course different from normal, fluffy cream cheese cheesecake. I couldn't help but think how similar in taste and slightly similar in texture it was to Costco cheesecake. All my friends enjoyed there dishes and while I wouldn't say this place blew my mind, it is a great place for those who stay at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center and want a decent meal for a fair price. I made reservations a few months ahead of time for my son's UCLA celebratory graduation dinner. The weather was gorgeous and I had made the reservation for the main restaurant and requested to sit outside. Instead they sat us in the lounge right next to the kitchen. The menu basically had a few options, salad, pizza, or burger. This was not even the regular dinner menu and certainly not what I had in mind for such a special occasion. But that wasn't even the worst part. We basically ate in shifts with a person bringing out one meal at a time every 20 minutes. I complained to the waitress, she said they were short staffed, I then complained to the manager and he never returned to our table to explain what the problem was. They ended up comping us 2 of the meals since they came out an hour after the first one. Weeks before, I had reserved a private room for my party of 8, and I was astonished by such beautiful presentations of table arrangements, furniture pieces, and sparkling utensils; they have such a distinctive way of catering service to guests whether that be indirectly or directly. The food was spectacular. Not only was the presentation one of the best I've seen, but they have also carefully thought out some of the most creative flavor combinations. They have transformed a basic pork chop into a pork chop dressed in an original sauce with grilled apples and cabbage, topped with bits of crunch. They even paired it with an extremely rich side of mashed potatoes which perfectly balanced out the warm feelings from the pork chop. Even though the dish was the same throughout, I was surprised with each bite. The pesto pasta was average though. It's so convenient to walk from the medical center, but despite the short commute, it feels like an escape from the hustle and undergrad appeasing Westwood village. I ordered room service from Plateia during a recent stay at the Luskin Hotel. While the food was delivered in the promised 20-minute window the first night, I attempted to order on another night and was told it would be an hour. I did not order a second time. I had the burger with the garlic fries. The food came in a cardboard box and with plastic silverware wrapped in a single cocktail napkin. The burger was very greasy/juicy and need far more than a cocktail napkin to stay clean with. The burger lacked flavor. It was refreshing without being too floral. The wedge of lemon added some brightness too. The Burger came with comté, marinated tomato, arugula, caramelized onions and basil aioli on a brioche bun. I went for medium and they delivered. I couldn't say no to fries, so Reggiano fries were my side of choice. The fries were crispy and well-seasoned. I picked up 2 pizzas to take home (carne and margherita) to share with the family. Per their review, the pies were a solid choice. A very solid restaurant on UCLA campus! I've been here many times as a student, and all of their dishes had amazed me except the steak I ordered today :( it had too much tendon and hard to chew and wasn't tender at all. Also the gremolata was directly placed on the steak which covered up a lot of the steaks flavor. I do like the roasted sunchpkes on the side as well as the carrot and radish. Overall, I would recommend their risotto and brunch, which are some of the best I've had. Also this is a no tipping establishment!!! Horrible service, bad food, worst experience. Stayed here for a weekend camp at UCLA. He must have entered the wrong information for our order and didn't listen to requests like bananas on the side, or I would like a side of toast, because the food came out incorrectly for half of our group. The food took a long long time to come out, so the group had 2 minutes to swallow down whatever they could stuff in their mouth before leaving. The bill was over $200 and nobody was happy or satisfied. I circled back to the manager to let him know what we experienced. I mentioned that we had good service from a different waiter before. He said some days things work out the way we want them and some days dont. I told him I wasn't trying to make him defensive but that I thought he should know how the experience was for his guests that morning. He said the service was slow because they were short handed and me taking up time to talk to him about it was going to slow down the food service for the people who were currently waiting. He gave me a condescending smile and said to have a good day. I enjoyed sitting outside, the staff was attentive but not overly so. I ordered an impossible burger with fries and the portions were generous and food of good quality. The food came out quickly and was very good. I was hoping more from the fries, but they were just ok. Their food menu is extensive and has something for all dietary needs. Looks like they have a full bar, although at this time, I was not drinking anything beyond my unsweet iced tea. They include a service charge so no tip is required.
