It looks like this guy was fired after my review. Good riddance!!! Karilyn Haut, PA, is the pro I've been seeing at the Arroyo Grande location. She is everything that is good about medical care specific to dermatology. She listens, she is thorough in her skin checks, and when she gives numbing medication, she actually waits for the meds to start working a little before gently adding more... Even when I had 20 spots to check and 6 to biopsy today, she took her time and made sure I was comfortable throughout the whole process. What a difference. I've been assured that "Dr." Winkleman won't be back... good riddance. What a jerk. Dr Haut is the one in charge, and she's amazing. Frankly, I would suggest that the owners of this clinic ask her and the nurses for their opinion on the new docs they bring in. They understand patient care and will make sure patients get good care. She knows what to look for, as she has been running this place well for years. I think they should pay for her to go to medical school because we need more docs like her!!! The first visit I handed them my VA card and CA driver license. They scanned both into their system. The following three visits I only showed my Drivers License, no issues at all. I had no problem with the person who treated me the total of four visits. On July 22 2026 I went beck for a follow up, she asked for my VA Card, I didn't have it as I don't carry a bunch of cards. I do not carry with me all the cards I have, only those I will need. The receptionist insisted I produce my VA card saying my driver license was not good enough. She was looking right at her computer screen, likely showing my scanned in VA card. I had been there four times prior. The receptionist told me I needed to go home and get it. I am 68 and have allot of orthopedics/nerve pain. On my way back to Atascadero I saw traffic going north for the Fair. I resented this woman sending me home to get a card I knew darn well was in their system. I did not return, and will not return. I used Google: "upon arrival at a Doctors appointment a Vet must produce and show their VA Card, UNLEES the Vet has already been there and the Card is in their files, in that case a valid Driver License is all that is required." That Lady power tripped over nothing! Now they are reporting to the VA that I was a no show. I am very glad that as soon as I did get home, I Messaged my Primary Provider at the SLO VA Clinic.

I also witnessed what appeared to be expired B12 being used for injections and IV treatments, which raised serious concerns about patient safety. In addition, I was concerned about the qualifications and certifications of staff involved in administering IVs, injections, and overseeing hyperbaric chamber treatments. The way staff members are treated was also troubling. I observed behavior that I felt was disrespectful and unprofessional toward employees. Patients deserve transparency, proper safety protocols, and qualified medical personnel. Based on my experience, I believe these concerns should be thoroughly reviewed by the appropriate regulatory authorities. She criticized the Doctor about notifying her of her breast cancer diagnosis...would she rather hear from the Radiologist or his office staff? Should he call her in to the office for a visit while she anxious and having sleepless nights until the doctor can get her in? It sounds like the doctor immediately referred her out which sounds appropriate ...is he supposed call her weekly to see how she's doing? How would the doctor know she changed doctors? With thousands of patients he supposed to recognize she hasn't come back and call her to see why? As for the exams, Doctors usually see patients who have a problem and many times exams are not necessary. Does the doctor need to do a full exam every time he sees a patient? Is she saying that when her knee hurts, she wants him to look in her ears? This woman's comments seem unreasonable, detached from reality, unwarranted and inaccurate especially as they relate to his character. I can't imagine she saw the doctor very often to come up with such mischaracterizations. Sounds like another unhappy person displacing their feelings and deflecting. Her comments are not helpful for others who want to know who Dr. Bettencourt really is. Thankfully many others have chimed in who actually know Dr Bettencourt. I can wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Bettencourt as a caring and professional General Practitioner.
