I was really exited about trying this place. Service was quick and it seems like a great place to study. I ordered the strawberry matcha. Usually when I order strawberry matchas at other places, there's usually some pink/red color to it because of the strawberry. When the drinks came out I had to confirm with the worker if it was a strawberry matcha and they said yes. I was so disappointed when I tried it because I did not taste any strawberry flavor at all. I couldn't even taste matcha.. to be honest it tasted like vanilla milk??
By far one of the best coffee shops in Fullerton, this is a specialty coffee shop so don't think that this place is gonna be drowning their coffee and sugar. They have a simple menu. I love that. It doesn't really change that often so you know exactly what you're gonna get when you get in there. The staff here super amazing. I've been going to this one now since I moved my job to their area within two weeks they already know my order and mines pretty specific and I think that's amazing. What a great place to show up and have a great conversation for a few minutes while waiting to grab a coffee you. My go to is the yuzu tonic. It's probably my favorite during summer. 5/5 stars My second favorite would be the volcano latte which is basically kind of like a vanilla latte with a little savoriness with the salt that gets added. I like extra salt. 5/5 stars My third favorite is the cardamom latte. It's the perfect blend of spices added to their espresso. The place is super cool and Vivy. I love that it's made from a container. The inside is super minimal and clean. Try it out I usually go there at least twice a week no less. They also visit their other location in Orange, which is also a great place so depending on what side of the OC you are on you can find them.
STRONG COFFEE. Yikes! Way too strong for me. This is for real coffee lovers lol If you enjoy the taste of coffee by itself with a splash of flavor, then this is for you lol If you are like me and enjoy fun flavors and a splash of coffee in your drink, this place is not for you lol My husband loves the taste of coffee. I do not. He loved this shop and I did not lol It's a matter of personal preference really. I ordered the sweetest drink on the menu and it was still too strong on the coffee flavor for me. Service was good. They made the drinks right in front of us. Ambiance was laidback.
Upon walking in, this place was so cute! The staff was friendly and seemed liked a great place to work/study. Got the hot volcano latte with oat milk and it was really good! It had a nice strong coffee flavor and the salt balanced the drink well. Will try other items from their menu!
I visited this coffee shop after a friend recommended it for its great coffee. Since only street parking was available right in front of the shop and finding a spot was difficult, I parked at a public lot a block away and walked over. The shop consists of the main building plus an additional area created from a converted shipping container. I arrived around 8 a.m. to find people already settled in with their laptops to study or work. I ordered a hot Americano and a croissant, but honestly, the experience didn't quite live up to a five-star rating. I think I might need to visit a few more times.
I was unsure whether or not to respond to the owner's reply. But thank you for taking the time to respond to my updated review. I believe my original review specified that I usually get the strawberry matcha, not the Volcano coffee. The strawberry matcha is $9. it's good. It's expensive for ME(and probably the average consumer). If you go down to Airoma and get their Strawberry Matcha (50%-75% SWT) it tastes like a matcha strawberry pocky for $7. I didn't mention it before, I'm not sure if they have fixed it but their tip percentage is predatory. I didn't mind because I have a careful eye but the lowest percentage set was 20% and the highest was a whopping 40%. It left a bad taste in my mouth but again, tip is optional...
Cute little coffee spot, no seating inside but in the patio. Really good matcha latte perfectly sweet and a hint of something I couldn't tell but it was yummy. Would get the matcha latte from here. Service was quick and efficient
Outstanding coffee and pretty much the only multi roaster cafe in OC sourcing coffee from the elite top tier of international and domestic coffee roasters (e.g. Sey, Tanat, Datura, Tim Wendelboe, etc...). I always order a classic hot caffe latte with whole milk when comparing coffee shops and the latte from PLAY was a standout - the single origin espresso that they use really stood out in this drink with red fruit and citrus notes. No boring drinks here! The staff were awesome and I was able to geek out about coffee with them for a little bit while waiting for my drink. I even snagged a killer bag of Tim Wendelboe SL28/Gesha, which is hard to find here in the states. My only critique is for their retail single origin bags - I wish they kept tighter control of roast dates. I usually try to buy within a couple weeks off roast and age them to my liking, but several of the bags they had for sale were a couple months off roast. Overall, this place is killer if you are serious about coffee. Many coffee shops nearby have a good vibe but lack substance. PLAY, in contrast, delivers on all fronts.
Cute, cozy, bright, and playful coffee shop. Love the bright colors of the decor and merch. Service was great. He asked if we had any questions and was attentive as we made our selections. I tried the Cardamom latte. The flavor and scent was very pleasant. Enjoyable! My husband had an espresso shot and unfortunately it was more bitter than we typically like but not bad. It reminded me of 90% dark chocolate with a hint of orange zest. Worth checking out for sure! I want to come back and try some other items soon.
Always love coming here! The location is a bit hidden but it's a very cute and unique spot! The baristas are always friendly and never fall short on their positive attitudes. I've so far tried both the volcano latte and the matcha maple latte. The volcano latte is very rich, and the matcha maple latte has both a sweet but earthy taste but the sweetness tastes a bit different and not too strong with the maple.
Stopped by PlayCoffee and was pleasantly surprised. We ordered the Sudachi Matcha Tonic and a cold brew, and both drinks came out quickly. The Sudachi Matcha Tonic was excellent. It was very matcha forward with a subtle citrus note. Not overly bright like a yuzu tonic, but just enough citrus to notice as you sip, allowing the matcha to remain the focus. The cold brew was also well done. Smooth, not bitter, and with plenty of body. Very easy to drink. I also really liked how the space is laid out. They repurposed shipping containers in a thoughtful way, creating clearly separated seating areas. There is an outdoor section, an indoor section with bathrooms, and a main kitchen area where you order drinks and browse merchandise. The layout feels intentional and works well even when the shop is busy. Looking back, we probably should have asked about the beans because the coffee was good enough that we would have happily picked up a bag or two to take home. Quick service, well executed drinks, and a unique space make PlayCoffee a spot worth revisiting. I will definitely be back to try more from their menu.
9/10 Hojicha Latte - I didn't adjust the sweetener at all. When I tried it after they made it, it wasn't sweet enough for me. I actually had to ask the barista twice to add more sweetener. Yes, I like my drinks on the sweeter side! Other than that, it had a nice earthy flavor. The layout of the place was also very interesting. Cost - $8.00 in total.
The barista very enthusiastically recommended the volcano latte (smoky sea salt) to me and it did not disappoint! I love a salty latte so this hit the spot and wasn't too sweet at half sweetness. I love the indoor-outdoor feeling and the colorful decorations throughout that really exude playful (lol) and childlike. The shipping container is a really cute aesthetic and I appreciate how there was still an outlet inside.
Finally checked off play coffee on my "cafes to try" list. We got the volcano latte and matcha maple latte I enjoyed the volcano latte the most! Service was fast and workers were friendly. There's an outdoor seating area and small indoor area if you want to study or get some work done. I'd say it's on the smaller side so can be hit or miss to get a seat. read more
I wanted a good study spot with sturdy wifi, good atmosphere, and good coffee. The coffee is on the pricier side for $8 for a cup of coffee. I do like how you can switch out the milk for free though. I ordered the vanilla latte and it was good but it wasn't amazing. The study section was a lot smaller than I thought. It was seperate from the ordering stand and the lights were flickering. The tables are on the smaller side with me and my boyfriend barely able to fit our laptops. I do appreciate how there are plugs for every table though. The restrooms were also very clean. Overall, the ambiance was alright, it was kind of empty with only 2 other people studying next to us. read more

I'm definitely a coffee snob. I love great roasters and love people that can pull an espresso shot that brings out the flavors and profiles of the bean. Play serves some of the best coffees from some amazing roasters and they know what they are doing! Service is always great but the line can get a little long so don't get frustrated because if you love coffee then the wait is worth it! Vibe here is super chill and the way they utilize the containers is pretty amazing. If you are all about lattes like 90% of the population, then you don't have to worry because they have some great lattes, you can have mine as I'll stick to espresso, cortados, one and ones and maybe a cappuccino. Come out and Play! You won't regret it! read more

Came here on a Saturday afternoon. Surprisingly, it wasn't crowded at all. I ordered their shakerato and a vanilla latte! I have ordered the shakerato drink elsewhere, and when I saw my drink, I was actually scared to drink it because it was all black. But as I tried it, the taste was delicious! Rate: 8/10 Vanilla Latte: 7/10 For sure, I see myself coming back! read more

It was a mediocre experience. First, I was told the strawberry matcha is made with cow's milk, which is strange. I've never heard of a café not being able to substitute that. I was told any other drink could have non-dairy. Second, the drink itself (matcha maple latte) was all right, but nothing noteworthy. Even though I saw that the employee was using a whisk for the matcha, the taste itself was bland. I also didn't see the stickers they used to have out in the beginning, and that was one if the main reasons I returned. Maybe I should have asked. Anyway, I went down the street to It's Boba Time and was much happier with their selection and prices! Plus, they have comfier seats and more space there. read more

I first tried the iced volcano latte at the Taste of Orange, so when I was in the Fullerton area and saw there was a PLAY location I knew I HAD to stop and grab an iced volcano latte. Highly recommend- perfect balance of salty and sweet (but not too sweet, and I'm usually someone who asks for less sweetener elsewhere because drinks can be way too sugary, but PLAY does it RIGHT!) Really cute little space, fast and friendly service, will definitely be returning when I'm in the area! read more

I had high hopes for PLAY Coffee after reading so many great reviews, but my visit left me a bit underwhelmed. The vibe felt like an overpriced LA coffee shop, which didn't quite align with the overall experience. The menu included minimal information--just drink and pastry names without any descriptions--and when I asked for clarification, the staff seemed annoyed. Not exactly the welcoming experience I was expecting. I ended up ordering the Shaken Maple, essentially a latte shaken in a cocktail shaker. It was good! The caramelized butter croissant was similarly just okay--nice, but not memorable. Honestly the lack of information on the menu was just very off putting and not welcoming. read more
Play coffee has two locations. This location offers an indoor/outdoor experience with ample seating for both options. My order was taking quickly after arriving and served fast. I ended up buying one of the items they sell (espresso log book) which I'm so excited to use at home. There's street parking as well as parking in the back. It was very quiet today when I went during lunch time, since this spot is close to Fullerton college it can get busy with students at times. I ordered the volcano latte and a pour over. read more

Play Coffee -- another niche coffee in downtown Fullerton. Based on great reviews, I decided to checkout the venue. I'm always gleaning from happiness drinking good quality coffee and supporting small businesses. Play shop is built with recycled shipping container so the space is narrow and long. Depending where you're entering the shop (e.g, from the sidewalk on Commonwealth) the main shop is further down in the alley. You'll walk past outdoor seatings and the "container" recreated as a lounge. I like the simplicity and vivid blue and orange painted walls. The main shop is bright and small -- order from a limited menu but brewed with marketed "higher quality beans". The price point is okay and comparable to other coffee shops. We ordered: (1) Volcano Tonic - 3/5. It was a specialty drink but nothing specific special about it. A bit disappointed. (2) Vanilla Latte - It's good nothing stands out. read more
Ordered an iced Volcano latte and a hot tea WAKAITO GREEN. Iced Volcano latte was pretty tasty not to sweat. The Wakaito green was tasty but super hot when served to me. I waited 30 minutes and it still burned my mouth so I had to wait another I had to wait another 30-40mins before I could drink it without burning my mouth. 6 star review. Best coffee shop in all of Southern California and I explore coffee shops religiously. Cardamom flat white is my go to. They make almost all their syrups in house and they're phenomenal. Staff is extremely friendly and accommodating as well. Can either visit the Fullerton or Orange locations. read more
One of the best in the OC for real coffee-enthusiasts. I usually grind my own beans and make pour overs at home with a V60, but every once in a while, I enjoy drinking a cortado or cappuccino with whole milk at coffee shops. I'd say this coffee shop is one of the best in SoCal without having to drive out to LA. They have a number of single-origin espresso and pour over offerings on rotation to try (including coffee roasters from the Netherlands and Norway). You know it's going to be good when there's beans on the shelf from coffee roasters such as La Cabra, April, Nomad.... Their espresso is one of the best pulled ones I've had - not over or under extracted. I was able to taste the berry notes in my cappuccino and the flavor was clean and not muddled at all. I had a sip of the volcano latte (which was described as their sweet and salty drink). I do think it was a bit overpowered by the milk and hard to taste the espresso, but still unique and tasty. Play Coffee is known for their coffee-forward drinks- not the sweet ones; so I don't fault them on this. Hope this review helps. Nowadays, it's really hard to tell which coffee shops are all hype but have bad tasting espresso and overly sweet, gimmicky lattes - this place is for the real coffee enthusiasts. Enjoy! read more

Stopped into play coffee today to try The "Cartier cream top" which has warming spices combined with espresso, milk, chai, Bourbon, vanilla & topped with Alexandre family farm A2 grass-fed cream top and then shaken with organic pumpkin spice. This seasonal drink is a must try if you are looking for a cozy drink to get you in the fall spirit. And even tho the baristas on bar are new faces to me they still brought the same great service that Leon has instilled in both shops. Top tier service, drinks & atmosphere. read more

Great coffee with an incredible selection of European roasters that are sometimes difficult to get in the US. Service was lackluster, as the guy and girl working Friday afternoon were not very friendly or engaging at all. It's a cool little location with outdoor seating, I'd return for a pour over. read more

Strawberry Matcha - 9/10 delicious matcha. The matcha isn't too strong and there's none of that weird texture you can get sometimes. Only downside is I think they premake the strawberry part so you can only get this drink with whole milk Volcano Latte - 9/10 my partner isn't a huge latte person but this was a hit for him. The coffee isn't hidden by the milk and isn't burnt like a lot of places. Perfectly sweet The shop is super small and the menu is simple. There's no places to sit inside but plenty on the outside. Super casual. Parking was fairly easy on a Monday morning but I can imagine it would be more difficult on the weekend since the lot is so small. However downtown Fullerton has lots of lots so you can def walk. Service was quick and friendly. They had two baristas so the drinks came out in just a few minutes. read more

My husband & I have stopped here a number of times to try their coffees & their treats. Love the unique design of this location & there are a number of seats in each little shipping container. There are some spots to sit outside & depending on the time of day you may be able to grab a nice shaded spot outside. Like other reviews have mentioned, they have a limited number of drinks & no descriptions. Some are obvs a given in what to expect but I did have to ask what was in the Volcano Latte. It sounded really good & I got it iced. I think next time I will try it hot, it didn't taste like anything special tbh. It is supposed to have a smoked & salty flavor but I didn't taste any of that when I had it iced. Their maple matcha was really good & I will def come back for that! Another thing that I noticed was consistency. The first couple of times my husband ordered the shaken maple it was not garnished with an orange peel. The last time we went in it was garnished. We also had bought the cutie little doughnuts for our little & they were stale the first time. The second time around they were super super moist! The service is good, they are friendly & will explain what's on the menu if you have questions. I hope that we can get more consistent drinks/treats. read more

This place surprised me in a good way - the location is interesting and the menu is unique! It's more of a grab & go counter space, but there is plenty of seating around the shop. Parking can be a little tricky since it looks mostly like street parking. I also noticed a good selection of baked goods in their display case when I stopped by on Saturday morning (the croissants & cardamom bread were calling to me). The volcano latte was really unique - it was a great balance of sweet and just a little salty; I tasted plenty of coffee flavor as well, and overall I would come back just for this drink. Service was very friendly and quick! I'd say that this spot is worth a try if you're in the area. read more

My friend who works in a coffee shop recommended this place and the shaken maple. I tried a shaken maple, and it felt like drinking delightfully and lightly sweetened desert. It's a latte with oat milk, and there's an orange peel on top of the coffee. The orange zest smells great and refreshing, and as you drink more, the orange smell gets stronger. If you prefer a strong coffee taste, this drink may not be for you, but I enjoyed this mild coffee with refreshing orange zest. My brother tried the espresso tonic, and he said it was great, but the tonic was mild compared to those offered by other places. read more

Exceptional coffee and tea selections from around the world. The pastries are also amazing! Arguably the most delightful kouign-amann in the area! Our family's favorite coffee shop with THE best barista, JDR. He has the most delicious recommendations for coffee beans depending on what flavors you're looking for. We can always taste the difference between JDR making our drinks and someone else, although always great regardless of who makes it, when it's JDR it's always spot on PERFECT. Cherry on top is they always remember even our daughter's order, kids chocolate milk and a sprinkle of donut! read more

I come here everyday - mostly twice a day. Their filter (drip) coffee is God's gift to this earth, and you will not find another espresso tonic on this green earth that is better than this one. I read someone complaining about the match here. HORSESHIT! Their matcha is the only matcha I will trust! Leon and the staff know their shit! If you want to nerd out about coffee with them or just hang and chat, there is something for everybody. This shop has done such an amazing job at creating place for the community. I have made some incredible friendships just by coming here and chatting with my fellow regulars. I don't know what I would do without this place. It has ruined me for coffee anywhere else! Honestly, I don't like to leave bad reviews on coffee places when I didn't order a coffee but this was the worst iced chai tea latte I've ever had lol. It had such a weird off-taste that I ended up throwing away the whole drink. It's a bummer because it was $6, next time I'll try one of their coffees if I go earlier in the day. The service was quick and the building is cool to hang out and work at. read more

When we first got there, honestly the vibes were not it. Not sure if both workers weren't having a good day, but for my first impression it isn't worth coming back. Coffee was fast, but taste like any other coffee tbh. Would definitely add descriptions to the drinks. read more

I forget what it's called, but it's their signature drink. My friend didn't think it was remarkable. Just meh. I had some kind of cold jasmine tea with a touch of seltzer and orange peel. Different. Pricey though at $7. A good place to catch up with a friend. They have sections of indoor seating but mostly outdoor seating. read more
