This is a wonderful Cuban restaurant on Washington Ave. The servers were very fast and the cortadito was tasty! I had some beef and chicken empanadas, and I noticed there were a lot of regulars there on this particular day. They added some lively conversations and amusement to the morning. This place is great! Its small with bar style seating throughout, but food is on point. I had something the lady suggested that had oxtail stew, rice, plantains, salad-- it was realllllly good! The portion size was pretty big too. The fresh mango juice was tasty as well, although I probably wouldnt have gotten it if I knew ahead of time that it was $4. Good place for a solid breakfast if you're staying at the beach. Great selection of items that span from Cuban to more central American. We went twice in two days, mostly for the coffee and the smoothies. Breakfast items were really good. The Cuban sandwich could have used some acidic addition, either pickles, mustard or lime, and the tamale masa was a little bland, but the pork was tasty (in both items). There are many reasons to love Miami, for me this is one of the top 5. The food is prepared in front of you and you can see the love that goes into crafting a homemade meal at a restaurant. The ladies treat you as if they were your aunt. The environment is another selling point. The loud atmosphere makes it feel like a cuban social club. I ordered the cuban sandwich, media noche and papa preparada. (I wanted to try everything). They also specialize in Nicaraguan food so its diverse. There is nothing in LA like the Playa cafe and my trips to Miami wouldnt be complete without a visit. Please never change. read more

Got the #17 and my craving for authentic rice and beans was not disappointed. There plantains were really good as well. The skirt steak was fine, maybe a little under-seasoned, but went well with the rest of the platter. Going in the restaurant was a little intimidating at first because it was pretty crowded and the menu is extensive, but the staff was friendly and accommodating. 5 Stars because this place is cheap, quick and open super early and super late. Lots of locals come here. So you get the normal people and the weirdos that come at odd times during the day. It's a great hole in the wall place and I actually somewhat enjoyed the company of the locals in the late evening, dancing, to spanish music, cavorting with older women...it was great. Best dish (I had it 3 times...guilty gulp!) is the palomillo steak with rice, black beans and salad and a wedge of lime. You get all this and a glass of water for $6 bucks! Talk about ballin on a budget. The cubano sandwich was also deelish. I normally don't like that much meat in my sandwich, but they pressed it so it was warm and the cheese was gooey! YUmmY! There are some weird drinks in the fridge...stay away from the weird stuff and drink the jugos naturales y the sodas. Aie aie aie will be back Playa Cafe! The Cubano & Media Noche was stacked to perfection! My palomilla was seasoned so nicely and the hubs' masitas were nicely crisp on the outside and soft and yummy on the inside!
