We were looking for something quick, easy, and very local to where we were staying in South Beach after dropping big coin the night before. I did a search on Yelp and came across Mehzcla which had a number of high rated reviews. I always read the bad reviews to see what people are complaining about but do so with a grain of salt. The complaints were regarding service and price, which I will address. Mehzcla is the hotel restaurant for the Lord Balfour and consists of patio seating and seats in the lobby and lobby bar. The night we went, there was bartender/server and another server handling the restaurant. It wasn't terribly busy and looked like a number of people were just having drinks on the patio where we sat which provided great people watching on Ocean Drive. They have a happy hour with $10 mixed drinks, appetizers, and meals that runs until 8 pm. The restaurant is billed as Latin but I'd say it was more of pub fare with maybe a Latin flare. The two servers rotated taking care of us and were polite, friendly, but hard to find from time to time. We ordered mixed drinks which could have used more alcohol but were tasty. I had a mescal margherita with a spiced rim (which I had to request and describe). Had the hot fried chicken sandwich and had no complaints about the chicken. The sandwich came with fries which were pretty good. Only complaint is that I like to have my fries spiced up, which most restaurants can accommodate. I asked the server for my fries to be spiced and gave several options on how to do it. Fries came out plain with no explanation why my request was not accommodated. Had the churros for dessert. Three large churros covered in cinnamon sugar with chocolate and Carmel dipping sauce. The churros were good except one was a little over cooked. It was an ok experience for something quick and not having to spend a ton of money. Still much better options in SoBe. read more

This is a nice little place just off the beach. Connected to the Balfour hotel. I got the chicken flatbread which has hummus in it. It was very good. Fair warning it does get a bit messy. I came here on a Saturday for brunch and was very impressed! The decor and ambiance of the hotel is warm and vibrant. I was able to try a few bites and everything was delicious. My favorite was the short ribbed empanadas and the chicken and sweet potato waffles. Yum!!! There is valet available at the front of the hotel and the closest parking garage is on 7th. read more

Came here with family after an Art Basel event based on my previous experience here for a YES event. Located inside the Balfour Hotel lobby, plenty of patio seating, although we decided to seat inside which also has plenty of space. I ordered the burger, which I highly recommend with extra crispy (well done) fries. The patty temperature was perfect, I enjoy a medium rare temperature and it was cooked just right. The service was quick and friendly, I'm sure it's always consistent at any foot traffic level, when our party of four went, they were slow. It's in SoBe, so be prepared to pay for street parking and expect it to be a challenge to find it, depending on the time of the day/week. read more

Mehzcla is about how you say "mix" in Spanish, and Mehzcla Restaurant in South Beach does a perfect blend of flavors! Such as the smooth blend of Brugal 1888, aromatic bitters, and a sweet black cherry that combines into my Rum Passion Fashion cocktail. While they have an indoor dining room, I instead ate at their patio while enjoying the mix of sights on Ocean Drive in combination with the yummy dishes I enjoyed. My chaufa rice order was a sizeable bowl of fried rice, an easy egg, chia seeds and greens mixed with the sweet heat of meaty bbq ribs. Into this yummy goodness, I tied the knot with the fresh bananas and cinnamon of their crème brûlée. Service was casually attentive and on point with recommendations. This restaurant is part of the lord Balfour hotel on ocean and 4th. Menu is fairly limited. We have only had simple American breaky. They have a happy hour but not really. Only 3 cocktails are part of the deal but even then when o ordered two cocktails I paid $20 for it. A margarita with all the taxes and service charges comes to $25! Kinda pricey. Came through during Art week since I had attended an event here previously and was blown away by the flavors. I was shocked to find them almost empty, but it did not deter our party of 4. I ordered a spicy margarita and was underwhelmed with the spice... was more of a regular marg which worked for me. Kudos to our server who comped me a second marg in an effort to improve upon the flavor. Food wise, the table ordered the ahi tuna tacos, the short ribs, and the burger and chicken club. I was looking for the oxtail dish and the arepitas, but was told that was a Spice menu item that was discontinued... sad day. The burger and ribs were tasty, but the chicken club left me a little wanting. Chicken was on the dry side and I could do without the middle slice of bread. The fries were fire though - perfectly crispy and texture! Tuna tacos were light and a good starter to share - you get 4 tacos per order. Overall, thought the experience was a-ok. Amazing experience! Great low key atmosphere, and the staff was very friendly and attentive! If you like cocktails, this is your jam! The service was absolutely the best around! The manager came by just to check on everything which was really nice compared to other restaurants in South Beach! Meh. This restaurant is on the porch of a beautiful art deco hotel. The street was loud (spring breakers), but I'm sure it's more charming not on a weekend in mid- March. The food was just OK. We had the tune tartare tacos, which were solid. The arepitas were good, but not amazing. And the Tostones were so salty they were inedible. The service was good once we got menus- they walked by us a number of times before we had to flag them down to ask for menus. Weird. How are they getting 4.5 stars? read more

STAY AWAY AND BE AWARE the server must have thought I was some guy on vacation and not a local. Added herself a nice 30% tip to my total!? We stopped in Mehzcla last night and we're pleasantly surprised by their Wednesday oysters and bubbly deal. We've walked by the hotel for many months while they were remodeling and were happy we finally stopped by. We had great service at the bar and chatted with the Chef who kindly explained the menu gave us some suggestions. He said in the next few months the menu will be larger than what it currently is so we're excited to go back. The interior decor had a nice boho touch with out being overwhelming and the seats at the bar were very comfortable. Next time we'll sit outside in their patio area which seemed very chill. Now onto the food. The oysters were fresh and delicious and had the most unique and delicious spicy mango cocktail sauce. It was unlike anything I've had with oysters but paired so perfectly without being over powering like traditional cocktail sauce. We also ordered from the main menu and tried their Chaufa. The rice was so light and fluffy and so flavorful and came topped with a soft poached egg. They had a yum yum sauce on the side that took the chaufa to the next level. I highly suggest sharing this because the portion was large. This is a place we'll definitely come back to and check out as the menu evolves. The prices were reasonable, especially for beer and wine, which is hard to come by on the beach let alone south of fifth. If your on the beach check them out. read more

Probably one of the best meals I've ever had! Went with a large group for Valentine's Day and was blown away by the food,service, and atmosphere overall. We did a tasting menu and everything was executed to perfection. Our server Kaly was professional,prompt, and very accommodating to all of our needs. We had so many amazing dishes that had our whole party overwhelmed with every bite. I love the vibe of this boutique hotel, as it is the complete opposite of the tourist attractions of South Beach. The service and food is nothing like you would expect in this area, as it is cozy and intimate. Found this spot by accident walking on Ocean Drive and so glad we did! We stopped in for drinks only. The signature cocktails on their menu all sound unique - wish we could've tried them all! We tried the Balfour Batida (not pictured I drank it too quickly, so good!) - highly recommend, the Smoked Old Fashion - very good, and the Spiced Smoked Margarita, also great. The latter two drinks they smoke with actual wood chips and gives it a great flavor. Our waiter was nice and personable and made good recommendations. We're in South Beach for a weekend get away and sound this hidden gem on Yelp. It happened to be a Miami Spice week which has a special "tasting menu". We tried the ribs, egg plant bravas, oxtail pasta, surf and turf fried rice, fried donuts, and cheese cake...all were delicious.
