I've had some trouble with this pharmacy. On several occasions I have gone in to pick up my prescription and have left empty-handed due to a number of shortcomings on the pharmacy's end. Most recently, I called two days before going to Playa to make sure my prescription was going to be in stock when I came to pick it up. They told me they did not have it, but it would be ready within the next day. Two days later, I arrive only to find that no one had actually ordered my prescription. This is not the first time this has happened--rather the 2nd or 3rd. Yet however unfavorable my experience with Playa has been so far, they do have a nice staff and good products. read more

This place is incredible, mostly because the owners Joe and May are incredible. Joe and May are the kind of people that take a road trip to Wisconsin to examine the farms at which one of their supplement suppliers plants their herbs. May talked me through the various physiological benefits of different herb combinations from this farm - I later did some follow up research (because that's what I do with just about everything - duh, yelper) and found that she was spot on about everything she told me. When they talk about the products they carry (for example, the widest selection of organic raw honey I've ever seen), you can tell they are extremely passionate about everything on their shelves. They talked to me about the various applications of raw honey, and what to look for depending on your desired application. They tend to use most of the products they promote, and really stand behind and believe in them. It also helps that they may be the very most warm and friendly business owners I've had the pleasure of knowing. As more and more studies are published on nutrition and the effects of synthetic drugs, it seems that the words of Hippocrates from 400 BC ring truer than ever: "let thy food be thy medicine." It's so very refreshing to see some pharmacy owners that aren't just trying to push the high margin synthetic drugs if effective natural alternatives (without the side effects) exist. Of course, they do the synthetic drugs too - often synthetic drugs are needed, when alternatives don't exist to treat specific conditions. They even provide a compounding service, which isn't something that I've seen in many places - very impressive stuff. All in all, I would say to stop by here whether you need prescriptions or not - Joe and May will likely find a way to make you a healthier person, regardless of what your situation is. read more

I've lived here for three years at least and never realized this place also carries items I would need to go to whole foods for. Items like coconut water, herbal teas, and natural toothpaste. Playa Pharm is a great little local pharmacy for Westchester and Playa Del Rey residents. Staff is very friendly and courteous and always super helpful. Just remember that since they are a local family-owned pharmacy, their hours are not as extensive as CVS and other larger chains... but I don't mind it at all since I live close. **Customers just need to keep in mind that since it is a smaller local pharmacy, they may not have some lesser common medications or non-generic versions readily on hand and need a day to have it ordered and delivered for you. So please keep that in mind when ordering your meds -- just ask them when you can pick it up and it is usually ready by next business day =) read more

My only regret at having changed Medicare D (drug plan) providers - which I had to do because the formulary changed - is that Playa Pharmacy is no longer a preferred provider. I've been to my share of pharmacies, on both coasts. Playa is the very, very, very best one I've ever been to. It's a pretty small place, so don't go there for groceries or everything under the sun that you find at CVS, but they have cool stuff I haven't seen anywhere else. The best little pharmacy! After wanting to bash my head in forty two times after dealing with the Marina Del Rey CVS, I decided to switch to a smaller pharmacy- and I'm glad I did! As soon as I transferred my scripts over the staff at Playa were extremely helpful. The scripts I needed to fill were expensive and relatively obscure and instead of slapping me with a large number they consulted me before (not after) they filled the script and worked with my insurance. The pharmacist provided me with extensive information about the medication and its uses and answered all my questions. I was in and out with relative ease and I will definitely be returning in the future! Joe, the pharmacist and own gives excellent recommendations on their over the counter products and has never let me down, he's very knowledgable. The only reason I'm not giving Playa Pharmacy is 75% of the employees. They mean well and are super nice but have little to no knowledge about the products, including the prices. But I'll keep going regardless. I prefer shopping at small businesses like this gem instead of the big chains. My med refills are expedited quickly and they even offer delivery. I've spent years going to pharmacies that are in drug stores. You know, CVS, Rite Aid and the likes. I would see smaller, individually run pharmacies and wonder how they compete. Well let me tell you, just become a customer of one and you will understand. Or I just really lucked out and found Playa Pharmacy. The staff makes you feel like they would love to help you. I have had great conversations with the pharmacist too. It's such a gift to have someone with knowledge want to help you. This is not a situation where you stand in a cued line and they ask what your last name is and send you off with a print out of details regarding your prescription. My lil' 15 month old babe was diagnosed with the flu and the only prescription was TAMIFLU, unfortunately in the city of Los Angeles TAMIFLU is harder to find than waldo, so wife called around and was fortunate enough to find Playa Pharmacy, and not only did they have babe's medicine, the lovely pharmacists compounded it and had it ready for us in 15 minutes. Playa pharmacy is hands down the best pharmacy in town. After being on the receiving end of their fantastic customer service for the past several years, I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. My grandparents unfortunately require a variety of medications for their health, and playa pharmacy goes and above and beyond to get the medications they need quickly, and often find coupons and rebates to help drastically reduce the cost. They are also always on top of when our medications require a refill and contact the Doc personally to get authorization. Why do I drive all the way from Culver City to PLaya del Rey? Because the people that work here are amazing. They are always friendly and always helpful. Im always given clear instructions as to how to take the medication. There are a lot of natural and homeopathy products here, and the people that work here know a lot about them. I just bought my first 100% natural moisturizer and Im looking forward to trying out more items sold here. I have picked up compounding medications for my pets three times. They understand the urgency of medication needs so they expedite the process well however, what matters is the details. First time I picked-up the medications, labelings for each medication were mixed up. I have 2 pets and I had to get many different medications at once for both pets so I took this as something someone could be mistaken- still it could have been a huge mistake if it wasn't caught early. 2nd time there was no issue. 3rd time when my vets put in the prescriptions on Saturday, this pharmacy called me and let me know the medications will be ready on Monday evening toward the end of the day. On Monday, I got a voice mail from the pharmacy at around 4:45pm indicating that all of my medications are ready for pick up but I didn't feel confident that I will make the stop before they close so I called and mentioned to the staff that I will pick those up the next morning at around 11:00am. I went to pick up the medications on Tuesday at around 2pm and the pharmacist told me that the compounding technician is making one of the medications now. I told the pharmacist that I got a call yesterday saying everything was ready. About 10 minutes later the pharmacist told me that the medication was made on Monday like they said, but the technician was just labeling it now so that the medication is fresh....(labeling it now so its fresh? Meaning freshly labeled? And the labeling takes that long???) I had to wait for 30 minutes as I was standing at the corner for that FRESHLY LABELED medication that the liquid inside was made the day before if that makes any sense to anyone.... apparently and honestly... I don't get it. Do you? None of them even say sorry either. read more

Their regular staff is awesome and super friendly! Never had issues ever coming here. Everyone is super helpful and attentive. I've sat (and waited willingly of course) while my prescription was being filled and observed the interactions with the staff and regular customers. If anything, I noticed a lot of the customers can be very rude and treat the staff like crap...but the pharmacy staff, on the other hand, still somehow keeps a positive, reassuring attitude no matter how snarky and mean their clients can get. I can't think of one time I've had a remarkably bad experience here, they all seem to just get the job done (and do it well). read more

I was very relieved when Joe told me he could obtain my medicine in one day. I had tried other pharmacies and was told I would have to wait one to two weeks. While my insurance does not honor Playa Pharmacy, I am willing to pay a little extra (they do pay something) for Playa's service. I have had to use Playa a few other times. The staff is wonderful. Everyone seems to know the answers to difficult pharmacological questions. If one person doesn't know the answer the next person does. If you are lucky enough to get Joe (just ask for him) you have a wealth of knowledge. He is also a delight with whom to speak. He is just like the people from a bygone era. He and his staff take the time to make sure your order is filled in a timely manner, that you know everything about what you are ingesting and that your questions are answered. This place is great. They were very helpful when I moved to the area and needed to transfer my Rx's. The nice man behind the counter (sorry don't remember his name) advised me that one of my Rx's was going generic soon so check back before my next refill. Guess what? I didn't even have too. A couple of days before I was due they gave me a call asking if I wanted the refill and to tell me that it was generic now so I would save almost $50 on my Rx. Great service! We were in Los Angeles for a quick weekend trip when I discovered I had left a part of my prescription back in Las Vegas. It's a compounded prescription so I can't just get the supplies at any drug store. I frantically started calling compounding pharmacies to see if anyone had what I needed. After calling a couple I tried Playa Pharmacy. I explained my situation and the gentleman (I didn't get his name) was very friendly and helpful. He said he didn't have exactly what I needed but to come down and he'd figure something out. After arriving at the pharmacy he saw what I needed and was able to give me something similar. The entire staff was very friendly. They also had a small store with all sorts of items (herbal, vitamins, first aid, etc). Basically they saved my trip!! After being a CVS pharmacy customer for years (it also feels like I spent that much time waiting in line to pick up my prescriptions) coming to Playa Pharmacy is a breeze. They will call and leave reminders about refills and I haven't had to wait more than 5 minutes to pick up Rx. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I've never had a problem here (can't say the same for CVS). They tend to be a few dollars more, but considering the convenience it is well worth it.
