The best salsa in Memphis. Love this place! The chicken enchiladas are wonderful. The fish dishes are great and something different than most Mexican restaurants serve. Shrimp tacos are so yummy. I have never had a bad meal here and I have been going for almost 18 years. The best part of going here is the staff the owners and their son are such kind people. The prices are very reasonable. This is my go to Mexican place. Some people have complained about the location but I have been day and night and never felt un safe. And the place is usually full of police and other public servants. The salsa was runny, the queso was runny, my husbands beef burrito was runny, chile relleno was runny. They weren't busy at all and after we got our food the server didn't check on us to make sure everything came out okay, we had been done eating for about 15 minutes and we never received our check, so when we went up to pay we had to wait for our server to enter our ticket. The lady at checkout wouldn't enter the tip amount in front of us until the 3rd time my husband told her 20%. Also on the way out we noticed what appeared to be a frog shrine under the TV as well as a bunch of frog decor which after looking up apparently is a shrine to rain, fertility, and the underworld. We recently had a large meal for my employer from Playita Mexicana. All of our employees raved about the food. The ordering process was very easy, and the employees were so friendly when bringing the food out to our car. They also thanked us for choosing their restaurant. Portion sizes were excellent, and everything tasted wonderful. I have eaten here for years and will continue to do so in the future. read more

I used to frequent this place quite a bit I even came with a friend earlier in the year. I ordered a shrimp chimichanga.I took a bite of this thing which the texture seemed to be a big sloppy soft burrito beans dry and rich bland.it was soft . I went up the street tried to take another bite . I couldn't do it. If I wanted a dog gone wet burrito I would have asked for it. Chimichanga are crisp because they are deep fried. Owner tried to tell me it was soft because I had left and went all the way home I told him no I'm just up the street I took a bite before I left. He preceded to tell me this is how they have done it for 23 years... I said I'm sorry I can't eat it can I get something else. He said if I make you something else I'll have to charge u...customer service at its finest.I see this lil place has gotten a big head . Good not near as good as I remember it when I lived in apartments up the street also they charge 3.50% if u use your debit or credit card!!! Lol this place is a joke ! Every week I order the snapper, today it was horrible. First, it has some weird taste like it's been washed with a cleaner, no I don't think they used cleaner(hope not), but that's what it taste like! I can't eat it, not that it was much to eat. Usually they are a decent size, but this one is a baby, perhaps they should've let it grow some more. Please stop sitting the fish on top of the beans. A lot of restaurants in my work area have closed randomly and some are carryout only (Covid days for future reference). Yesterday I was STARVING and had little time to find something to eat. I decided to run into Playita Mexicana since the lines were forever long at the fast food spots. I walked in, was greeted by a nice man at the counter, and I was walking out five minutes later. My food was hot, fresh and THEY DIDN'T PUT LETTUCE ON MY TACOS AS REQUESTED! Believe it or not, but requesting places to not put lettuce on your food is hit or miss. The Pico had fresh crispy onion, full flavor Cilantro and took my taco to a whole other level. I will be back, with friends and time to try their top shelf margarita on the rocks no salt. Best Chili Rellenos I've ever had. My favorite used to be in a little Mexican restaurant down the street from Second City in Chicago. But not anymore. Highly recommend Playita. Hubby and I dropped by here since we were in the area. He remembers this place specifically for their naranja drink, which is freshly squeezed orange juice with an extra something mixed in. The lady at the cash register wasn't sure what it was so we will ask our waitress next time- assuming they will share the secret! The tacos here seem to be ridiculously priced ($2.50 and up each) but they're actually bigger than normal so it's not a problem. Also they're pretty fantastic. The al pastor don't come with any pineapple and instead come with a super sweet sauce that was amazing to me but cloying to hubby. I did end up with one taco that was almost pure fat so there is always that danger. Depends on whether you like fat or not. I still need to try their other tacos. I came once before and got spicier red and green salsas than the standard red one they provide. You have to ask for it though as it's not something they just offer. Service is great here and you pay at the desk by the exit! I wouldn't say this place is my most favorite for tacos but it is worth checking out! Disfruta! The people here are so rude. I had a party of 7 standing at the door for 10 minutes while waiters and waitresses walked all around. Back and forth to the kitchen and checking on their tables, all while not acknowledging us at all. There are three things in life when it comes to lunch that I am a fan of. If you can nail two of three, i'm in. First, price. And Playita Mexicana nails this to the nth degree. Let me ask you a question. Do you remember lunch menu prices around.. oh... 2001? Well head on over to Playita because their lunch menu prices are still the same as you remember! I got lunch fajitas for $6.95 including chicken and steak. And they bring it out on a sizzling platter, not the little sad plate of very little you get at most mexican places when you order the (often $9) lunch fajitas. And this brings us to the second item, value! For that $7 i got basically what counts at other places as a dinner portion of fajitas, with three tortillas, and the traditional accompaniments. And it wasn't just a lot of food, it was delicious! I am willing to say, and i will stake five stars on this, it was the best lunch fajitas I have ever had. And the other lunch specials? Well, how about this... there is one on there for $4. That's right, nuff said.  Three, comfort! This is primarily a blue collar place and a lot of the people coming in for lunch had been out in the heat so the AC in there is blasting on full. It felt glorious! What a magnificent respite from the Memphis summer heat. In conclusion, go here for lunch, friends, just do it. You will be comfy, spending very little money, and eating good portions of delicious food. Finally, I just have to say, the rest of the menu there looks great. Best Mexican in Memphis! I have lived in Memphis for 25 years and this is the best costal style Mexican restaurant in Memphis! Honestly, it is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Memphis, hands down. Salsa is fresh! Amazing seafood! Unique and delicious menu! Friendly staff! Great drinks! We normally get the ceviche, tacos de pollo o pastor, and shrimp cocktail. Had a craving for Mexican and decided to do take out from this place. I ordered a shrimp quesadilla. There was a 30 minute wait, which is longer than I like to wait for takeout, so I suggest calling in your order. The place looks clean with interesting decor. I liked the tortilla chips. The salsa is typical and what you would expect from a place like this. The quesadilla was served with refried beans and rice. I didn't like the rice, the beans were so so. The quesadilla itself was lacking. They do give you plenty of shrimp and they are a nice size, but it just consisted of the shrimp and cheese, an ample amount of cheese, maybe too much cheese actually. I would've liked for it to have some veggies, other than the lettuce and the small amount of tomato. Maybe some onions and Bell pepper or maybe some pico or guac served with it. I was really craving Mexican food and my SO took me to this place. The food was really really good. I got the pollo loco which is just chicken smothered in queso with rice and beans and my plate was huge! It was really yummy. My boyfriend got the chicken fajita and unlike most places, they didn't skimp on the chicken. I thought the food was really delicious. My one complaint would just be the service because our waitress disappeared for a very long time so we had to find someone else that would give us the check. read more

The food was alright, but not the best we have tried. They only gave us on type of salsa for our shrimp coctel and it was Valentina. We ordered a shrimp ceviche platter and it was not very flavorful and it was very overpriced for what they serve you. They didn't give us tostadas for the ceviche and only gave us a basket full of saltine crackers. When I asked for tostadas they did offer to give us more tortilla chips. This is the place to come for fish done Mexican style. We went for lunch and debated over the filet (which is catfish) or the red snapper, which comes baked (al horno) or Veracruz (quick-fried). Baked takes 45 minutes to prepare, and I'm sure it's completely worth the wait. But this was a workday lunch and we didn't have the time to invest. Half of us opted for filet; half for Veracruz-style snapper. The snapper arrived on a large warm plate, propped upright in a metal rack. It's whole fish (which I personally love). I'm not exactly sure if Playita does this out of humor, or as a kitchy fish masquerade, but they put marachino cherries on toothpicks were the fish-eyes were. Atop the fish was an afro of grilled onions. Most of us thought it was hysterical, but one of my co-diners was completely grossed out by it. (She's grossed out by a lot of stuff. "Spam is WHAT??? Yewwwwww!!!!") This led to all kinds of lunchtime hijinks, including putting a toothpick in the fish's mouth, then rolling a mock doobie for the fish out of straw wrappers. The fish was delicious if not a leeetle bit over-cooked. Between a yummy and entertaining and healthy meal, I'm giving Playita five stars. We capped the 2-hour lunch off with a visit to the convenience store next-door for purchase of 50 losing lottery tickets. read more

Consider this to be more of a 4.5 rating. I eat here once a week or so as it's close to my office, very good food, and fairly priced with excellent service. My go to order is 3-4 carne asada tacos w corn tortilla and pico de gallo. They are always loaded generously w moist chunks of steak and fresh pico. The chips a thicker in style. The salsa is moderately chunky with good use of onion/cilantro/etc to set it apart from the blander tomato purée salsas around town. Not the best Mexican I've had in town but very good. read more

The facility has beautiful pictures of beaches, etc. And there is a fireplace which apparently has been decorated by someone who loves frogs. =) My favorite things to eat here are the fish tacos. I don't frequent this part of town very often, but recently was in the area taking my son to the Bass Pro Shop. Just around the corner, in the same shopping center is La Playita. We were hungry so decided to check it out. At first glance, it's not all that impressive - pretty much your standard Mexican restaurant with bright decor and painted murals. But the food was most certainly impressive and anything but typical. First of all, let me tell you about the tostadas here. They have a nice long list to choose from, but the the one that caught my attention was the shrimp tostada. The description sounded great, and so I ordered one. It was very very good. It came with fresh avocado slices and perfectly cooked, lightly seasoned shrimp, salsa and cilantro. With a fresh lime squeezed over the top, it was mucho perfecto! Though I didn't order it, I also noticed they have fish tacos on the menu. I am definitely going back and trying those next time. read more

I had the shrimp diablo which was hot enough to request help in the form of sour cream and limes. My lunch came with cucumbers, tomatoes, oranges, beans and rice in huge portions. Ordered the fajita steak nachos from the appetizer menu and they were pretty dang on good. I've got to say this was by far the best tasting salsa I've had from a Mexican restaurant. The owners were there during my visit and were very nice and friendly. They checked on customers and the staff before they left for the evening. I made it there about 415pm, so I beat the dinner crowd, it wasn't crowded when I arrived but the place was picking up around 5pm. Our waitress was attentive, bathrooms were clean, and the food was tasty. I'd definitely return and try something different, but the left over nachos I wish I took home!! read more
