Dec 2025 on a Friday night

Met up with friends on a busy Friday night in Times Square. Sat at the table in front of the stairs! When it's crowded you gotta speak louder. Polite staff helping to keep the floor clear. No complaints!

We came here on Derby Day dressed in Derby best. They did turn the channel to the Derby for us. We asked for mint Juleps, they had Woodbridge bourbon but no mint and couldn't make the drink. We stayed for one person in the party to have a drink. They do have a fella who sings Frank Sinatra songs on Saturdays and he chatted with us a bit- but since no juleps we left. The menus looked good, and the ambience was great. If it weren't for the special day and need for the Juleps we would have stayed.

A great experience my last few visits. The staff is friendly, attentive, and efficient. Fresh Guinness, poured properly. The guacamole and chips were fresh (although the guacamole was a tad too spicy for my taste). I highly recommend it!

Was in town for meetings and came to my favorite watering hole! Katie the downstairs day bartender is the best bartender east of the Mississippi! Come in say hi and have an intriguing conversation with her. She is awesome and the drinks are heavy!!! Great ambiance with 80s tunes playing at all hours!

May 2025: As a die-hard Boston Red Sox and New England sports fan, I slipped into The Playwright Tavern near Times Square during a Yankees vs. Mets game, keeping it stealthy with no Red Sox gear - takes guts to rep my team quietly in enemy territory! The atmosphere was electric, even if I was flying under the radar. I met Joe, a bartender from San Juan, Puerto Rico, who was pure class. We hit it off, chatting about our kids and youth sports. Joe, a clear Mets fan, took their loss to the Yankees in stride, and I didn't rub it in (too much). He's a hard-working, five-star guy who makes the experience memorable. Ask for Joe when you visit--you won't be disappointed. Great vibe, solid service, and a spot that handles sports rivalries with heart. Lets go Red Sox I whispered (quietly)!

This is an old standby for a pre theater meal with traditional Irish fare and a small menu to meet most tastes. My highlight was the Mac and cheese, which is creamy and cheesy. I also got the truffle parm fries, which had a perfect truffle and cheesy flavor but they were pretty limp and crispy. Service was fine but not anything super special. However, if you are looking for a spot that is quieter, the top floor is a great place to grab a quicker bite.

Service was friendly and food was okay. Ordered the Asian chicken salad. Presentation was excellent, but some of the chicken had grizzle in it.

Very friendly staff; clean inside, and very groovy place - the pub occupies an entire beautiful old townhouse, with lots of old wood & exposed brick. Very good black & tan. Food was also very tasty & prepared with care. I had my standard Caesar salad and wings. However - eight buffalo wings WERE SEVENTEEN DOLLARS! This is not the right price - THIS IS PRICE GOUGING! I left feeling gouged, & still hungry.

Had a great, first time experience here. Came from a long drive down from Buffalo and needed a place to eat and just sit down to take a break from driving. We decided to eat outside to get some fresh air. It was nice. We ordered: - traditional Irish breakfast: Irish sausage, bacon, black & white pudding, eggs any style, grilled tomato, home fries and toast - James Joyce: Irish bacon, cheddar, fries - bottomless mimosas - bloody mary Food was delicious and sitting outside was cozy, despite the NYC noise. The servers were knowledgeable, polite, fast and efficient.

Service from the bartender was great. I ordered the fish and chips and a Bloody Mary. Everything was great up till then. Unfortunately, the food was a disappointment. Maybe it was a deep fat fryer thing, but I respectfully suggest the cook be given a little additional training. The fish batter was hard on the outside, and the fish was completely mushy on the inside. Like, gray mush. The fries were lukewarm. The mushy peas and the tartar sauce were served in little covered plastic disposable containers. I'm not a fan of that, but I get it is convenient. I truly wanted to like this place, and except for my one experience with the food, I would certainly return. People were having fun, and I did as well. I believe if they become a little more attentive in the kitchen, this place is a five star pub.

The pretzels were more like warm soft breadsticks, served with a cheese dip and mustard on the side. Decor is an advertisement for Guinness but it IS an Irish pub in NYC. I had the Irish stew, a crock of hot beef and vegetables in a tasty gravy. Others in the group enjoyed burgers and salads. Next time I'll try the shepards pie. Server was pleasant and answered our questions.

Apparently this beer is not as common in New York, but there were a couple Irish pubs that still sold them on draft and luckily there was one nearby my hotel. Very cool place! It's easy to miss walking by but once inside there's a bar on the main floor, restaurants in the next floor and a rooftop bar several stories up. The rooftop bar is a huge open atmosphere and once seated you have about 40 beers on tap to select from. The staff is incredibly friendly as well and knew exactly what I was looking for. Would definitely come back to try more drinks!

Bartenders - FIVE of them will ignore tf out of you until they have no choice but to speak to you because some finance bros came and called the bartenders over. Thought it was because I'm a woman but then this older Caucasian woman came to sit next to me and they came to her right away (I'm a woman of color). I even had to flail my arms just to get the tab and I can tell that it's their routine to ignore a certain demographic. I was only here because my friend had to meet up with my work colleagues so I thought I would grab a seat at the bar and enjoy a quick burger before heading out for birthday festivities. The burger and fries were good and the rooftop is nice. I have no desire to return but it's probably what they want.
