I know everyone loves this place - but every time I have a cake from here, it fails to impress me. Truthfully I think I have had homemade cakes that are better than from this bakery. They are always dry and crumbly and loaded with icing. There is way more icing than actual cake if you get a sheet cake from them to make it appear thicker. I think they have some nice looking stacked cake designs - we don't usually order those. We usually just get standard Birthday Cake or what ever sheet cake or 10 inch round cakes. They look like average made at home cakes with a bit of roses or flowers on them that anyone with basic pipe bag talent could have done. On a side note - last time I was charged with getting a cake for someone I had pick up duty I did spring for a doughnut while I was waiting in line (for forever mind you!) That was pretty tasty and much better than the cakes I've had. I know you're probably asking If I dislike this place WHY do I keep getting cake from there!? Well, flat out people in my family like them but it puzzles me as to why. I usually pass and don't eat it at this point because it's just not worth the calories anymore. I have purchased from Plaza Bakery for years. Always the best! never had a problem. Would look forward to their almond cakes for birthdays and weddings. I purchased a cake last week for my husband's 80th birthday. It was horrible. They told me the recipe was the same as the previous owner but it did not even compare. It was a two layer almond sheet cake which looked like it came from an unexperienced baker. The taste was horrible and not much almond taste. When I cut it the icing was so soft if stuck to the knife and the cake crumbled when I tried to cut. No one finished their piece and I threw over half of it in the trash can. Not fit to eat. I will not purchase there again after being a customer over 40 years. Their price was too high and you had to prepay. No refunds, I wonder why? read more

Plaza Bakery has been around since I was a little kid (it use to be in the Plaza Shopping Center back in the 70s, when I was growing up). It is not located in the Hilltop section of Virginia Beach. I primarily go there for their petite fours. They are to die for! They also make an awesome Rainbow Bar (small rectangular almond flavor cake with rainbow cake inside), that tastes like a giant petite four. Tastes like a piece of Heaven! Their cinnamon and raisin buns are delish, as are many of their donuts. The Boston Cream donut is my favorite! Their breakfast pastries are very good, as well. My favorite being their raisin, cinnamon, nut coffee danish. They also have a decent selection of cookies, cakes and pastries. If you're a true VB local, Plaza Bakery is one of those "must stop" places that calls to you every so often just because you get a hankering for one of their specialties that you've grown to love over the years! You can't go wrong if you find yourself in this bakery. Your blood sugar spikes as soon as you walk in the door! The smells...oh, the smells... This is the best little Bakery that I know of in the Hampton Roads! The ladies there are always friendly & smiling. They have the best canolis & donut holes. They are also super inexpensive compared to other bakerys around. The only drawback is making sure you get there when they first open because they tend to sell out extremely quickly! Whatever they make in the morning is all they will have for the day (unless it's special order of course). I recently ordered an almond wedding cake birthday cake for my husband's birthday as it is his favorite and has been forever. I was concerned because of the reviews since the new owners took over but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The cake was the same as it always has been, delicious. Perfect amount of almond flavoring, cake like a white pound cake or most wedding cakes used to be. Icing yummy white icing. It was the same cake give or take a couple decorating dots added. They were accommodating, welcoming and very polite. Looks like they are really trying to me. I was sad walking in to pick up the cake as I knew it would not be be familiar but it's really very cute inside with the changes they have made. I would have to say an adorable shop now. Although nothing will make us not miss the old Plaza Bakery which will always be a comforting part of our lives and memories, I think these ladies are trying hard. read more

I had a slice of that chocolate cake. The frosting was okay but the chocolate cake was really moist and chocolatey. I would have liked to have tried one of the pastries but I did see a little fly flying around inside of the case so I opted not to today. Small selection but they do have cookies donuts they had two flavors of cupcakes and other assorted pastries. read more

The Plaza Bakery has the BEST cream filled donuts, apple pies (critiqued by my picky mom) and of course cakes. I can remember driving from Suffolk to VA Bch (1hr away) to get their donuts. They were out of my favorite, vanilla cream. I was sad to have missed the Saturday AM rush, but never failing to please, they took a Benet, excellent by the way, and filled it full of vanilla cream and dusted it with powdered sugar. The flavor was fantastic, the Benet texture was excellent and I was a happy camper. If you have never been there, you're missing out. I lived in VA Bch for 18 years then moved to Suffolk in 2002 and THE PLAZA BAKERY has been our families favorite even after THEY moved to their current location. read more

My family has been getting its cakes from here since before I was born. I now get my sons cakes here and they are always beautifully decorated and delicious. White Almond is what we are partial too but the lemon is also delicious. If they have mini donut holes when we go to pick up they are always bought as well. read more

I have lived here all my life. Plaza Bakery was in Plaza shopping center and I walked there to purchase cream horns with my allowance/baby sitting money when I was growing up. Cream horns are one of my favorite things in the world. I often received them as gifts as my friends and family know how I loved the Plaza Bakery. When ordering the numerous birthday and wedding cakes I have purchased over the years I would always buy what cream horns were in the case. I learned a few months ago the bakery had changed ownership and that "they were using all the same recipes." No they are not. I had a cake in February from there and the buttercream frosting was not the same and it had a weird, strong extract taste at the end. Yesterday I was gifted cream horns for Mother's Day and they were NOT the same. The were hard and dry with tasteless cream filling. No where near what they used to be. Cannot be the same recipe at all. I know as I have been eating them for well over 50 years!! The horn pastry portion was not flaky as in the past and was hard and dry. I feel like the were pre-made and frozen and thawed for sure. In the past when the days supply was gone you could not get any until the next day, as they were that freshly made. My family was told yesterday they never run out so not to worry. So always made fresh daily ??? I think not. I am very sad and disappointed in this bakery now. It has ALWAYS been my bakery and I have sent them many friends and family that have become customers. They are going to lose a lot of customers. read more

We went to Plaza Bakery for a cake tasting and it was sooo dry and tasteless. We went there for a wedding consultation and all they did was a give us a box of samples and set us on our way. We didn't get to talk to anyone. I guess its not like we needed to after a bite of the sample. Literally the next day, the samples we took home were rock hard. read more

It's taken a few days for me to write this post because the events that took place at Plaza Bakery last Saturday are so disheartening for me. My family has been purchasing from this bakery for generations. My Nanny (Grandmother) got their signature cookies with the small dot of icing in the middle of them for my mother when she was a child and then for me before she passed away when I was a small child. My mother continued the tradition for my sister and I as we grew up. I have had these cookies every Christmas for 31 years as well as other special occasions in between. When she picked them up Friday for me as soon as I opened the box I knew something was wrong. The color wasn't the typical light baked brown color they usually are. After I bit into one there was no doubt that something went wrong in the baking of these usually so soft cookies they could crumble just from you picking one out of the box. When we arrived back to the bakery Saturday morning to talk to the NEW owner Crystal Spellman she was abrupt, dismissive, cold, and quite uncaring. I simply just wanted her to replace the 3 pounds of cookies we purchased because really they tasted terrible but I was trying to be polite. I tried to explain that I've had these cookies for years and I know how they are supposed to taste and she just kept saying that nothing had changed with the recipe. Which could be true but even the best bakers and chefs know not every time they make something it turns out the way it was supposed to and that's what I was trying to convey. Crystal looked at me and said well I'm not replacing them so what do you want me to do? I then shocked with how abrasive she was being said a refund. She refused to refund the inedible cookies so I requested a refund for the other 3 pounds of cookies my mom placed to pick up a few days later. The new management style here is not what it was in the past. I left this establishment in tears. Which I know seems dramatic because I didn't get the cookies I wanted. But Crystal took something from me that day, she tarnished all the happy memories those cookies brought my family. I love Plaza Bakery! I ordered a cake from them for my daughter's birthday and it was spectacular. It looked good and tasted even better. I ordered the cake the night before I needed it and they were able to take my order with no trouble. The bakery is also filled with delicious cookies, fresh bread and other treats. DO NOT ORDER A CAKE HERE ! SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE ! I ordered a cake for a party. As somebody below said - cake was dry and GROSS. Fell apart as we were serving it . Icing was WORSE . It had the wrong amount of sugar in it and it was not mixed properly . You could FEEL the gritty sugar in the icing just by touching it. I brought cake back and was told I would be given a credit . Then after calls back and forth they began to defend that the cake SHOULD BE like that - and basically offered me an insulting small store credit ( as if I would EVER GO BACK ???) Job well done! I ordered a carrot cake for a birthday party... just a simple sheet cake for 50 people with "Happy Birthday" on it. I had never used Plaza Bakery for a cake before so was a little worried but I must say that the cake turned out wonderful. I had never been in the bakery before and was impressed with all the "extras" they had available. Pre-made goodies ready to take out at that exact moment. I will definitely return! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because they seem a little short on staff... there is generally a 10 minute wait or so to be helped. read more

This wonderful bakery used to be located near my home in the Princess Anne Shopping Center. I lost touch with it when they moved but was do excited to have recently found them again when I was getting my hair done nearby. Let me say this is the BEST bakery I have visited in the area and I am very picky about pastry icing. Good icing is almost non-existent. All the higher-priced "fancy" you call them, bakeries I visited had icing that tasted like it came pre-made in huge tubs - I asked once and was told it DID. Plaza Bakery KNOWS how to make decorator's icing and their roses aren't flat and melting like most you see. YES they are traditional - you might not find as exciting an array of themes (not that they couldn't make them if you requested it) but they have the tried and tested, GOOD items. And I have not found their cakes to be the least bit dry! I always wanted the cakes like I grew up with - with beautiful piping and sharp roses and icing with that little crust on the top and super moist interior. THAT takes skill to make! And let me tell you, I have TRIED it and you can't decorate like that without some experience and talent. And if you want to talk price, they cannot be beat. I went in on my birthday because my husband can't buy a decent cake to do him good - and I saw two slices of decorated cake in the display case. I asked if they could put a rose on them and they did - and you know what? They were BIG slices and WITH the roses added, I only paid $3.68!! Their whole 9-inch cakes are just over $20. I was paying more than that 15 years ago!! I am so glad these wonderful skillful people are still there and still doing what few others can - making luscious traditional treats from scratch that melt in your mouth!!
