Guacamole made at your table is delicious, but way too small. The bowl looks enormous, but it is deceptively shallow. I like the margaritas too. For food, stick to very basic, like fajitas. For some reason, many of the dishes have potato in them! Bizarre for a Mexican restaurant and a cheap filler in my mind. It's ok, but after a couple visits, we're not anxious to return. If the guac was more reasonably-sized, I would just go for that and a margarita. Honestly, food at Mi Pueblo is superior. Ok, I was warned by Yelp reviewers that this place was substandard. But I went because relatives who had been there once had loved the fresh guacamole In truth, the guac was good (prepared in front of you). The entrees, however, were not. I ordered a Torta which is a wonderful sandwich if prepared right. This was not. The sandwich was warm at best. The steak looked like something that came out of a can and the bread smelled weird. Sort of like a chemical-smell I couldn't finish but I tried to force myself to eat what I could in order to be polite to my family members who recommended the place. God, it was an awful experience. Little did I know they were not enjoying their food either and had to stop midway -- both saying that the chicken was stringy, wet and tasted like tuna fish. We all agreed that it was unpleasant and the food tasted off and weird. We paid and will never go again. Found this place by chance. Saw the full parking lot and took that as a good sign. Stopped in for a Sunday night dinner and was extremely impressed. I haven't had Mexican food this good in Florida. Apparently family owned and operated, they do it the old fashioned way - by striving for the best they can be. The locals seem to know good Mexican and have voted with their feet. read more

I'm kicking myself for not listening to the other 38 reviews, but my growling stomach got the best of me and I went in. We were met relatively quickly by the host who was too quiet to hear (and I definitely couldn't hear him over the loud mariachi music on the sound system (nothing wrong with authentic music, but the volume was too much)), and quickly offered drinks by our waitress, which was followed by the guac cart (I'm allergic to avocados...whoop). I got the grande combo with a quesadilla, a tamal, and a burrito, all of which were chicken. We also got some queso/cheese dip to share, and I got the Jose Quervo margarita. The quesadilla was the only slightly edible part of my meal due to the tortilla. The tamal was tasteless, the burrito was soggy, the rice was definitely old, and the refried beans tasted chemically. I've never sent food back in my life out of embarrassment but I came pretty close. On top of it all they covered everything in cheese to cover up all the badness (tasteless cheese, the strategy didn't work in their favor). The queso was good, but it tasted like if you melted some white American cheese with some canned green chiles, and was like warm at best (and soon congealed). My margarita was gross...definitely bottom-rack well tequila (didn't taste like Quervo). My waitress was sweet, and the portions were large (but who cares when the food is trash), the interior looks recently touched up, and the service was good, buying them the second star (I'm far too nice.). I'm gonna chalk up my paid and tipped bill as a donation to hopefully better this establishment. read more

Was awesome! Tasted fresh. Chips served warm. Guacamole made fresh table side for $6.75. Decor is nice. Granite table tops and leatherette seating with distressed wood. I had lunch fajitas. Visiting family from out of town. We love Mexican. Even though the place had okay review we decided to give the place a try. Wow my expectations we met and exceeded. This place was perfect. Great menu selection. The table side guacamole was yummy. The salsa was mild and good. The salsa was able to stay on the chip as you dip. I also had a margarita it was also good not to strong nice mix. For my meal I had the mixed fajitas. This place gave me huge proportion of beef and chicken. Not over powering with pepper and onion the flavor was perfect. It came with guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese rice and beans. This place was great can't wait to come again in our next visit. I wish you could give Negative star ratings! The litter filled parking lot and poorly manicured landscape should have deterred me from stopping but I have a weakness for Mexican cuisine. Once inside, I was surprised by the original Mexican decor and feel. It was pleasant. The host was very nice and sat us right away, we even got to pick our spot. Again I should have noticed how dead it was for lunch, there were only 3 other couples dining in a restaurant that seats at least 50. A server came right away with menus, chips and salsa. The menus were crusty and sticky around the edges but I already knew what I wanted so I didn't really touch it. I ordered the beef chimichangas and my boyfriend had the lunch special, a quesadilla/burrito/taco platter. We ate our chips and drank our first drink, no sign of anyone for a refill on either, then the food came out, brought by someone else. We asked for refills and got nothing. We began to eat and another server walked by, we flagged her down for drinks and chip refill. 10min later we got another server, finally we have something to wash our food down and more chips to dip in the 4$ quèso which was cold by this point. The food actually looked good and tasted ok. We kept getting different servers each time. It was really bizarre! Finally we had finished eating and wanted our check ASAP, we had places to be. It took us another 10min to get a server for our check. A whopping 48$ for 2 lunches, and that's no alcohol! When we went to pay we were confused on who to give the tip to? Do we give each person that served us a tip!?!? NO WAY! OMG what a nightmare, I suggest going to the grocery and making Mexican at home! FYI this last part is a little graphic TMI.... I have been here 4 times, and I like this place. I like the ambiance, the seats are comfortable, and the staff is very attentive. Love the fresh avocado guacamole made at the table. The ceviche was very flavorful. The food is good, not great but it is good. I had coupons and forgot to give it to the waiter before the bill was brought to the table, he took the coupons and gave us a new bill with the discount. I will come again. When our drinks arrived he took our order and Harriet chose the SINCHRONIZADA ($7.95) which consisted of a grilled tortilla sandwich, stuffed with Chicken, cheese, onions, sliced Jalopenos, and chopped avocado. Food was EXCELLENT. I would highly recommend this restaurants food! The only downside was the service. We came at 3 pm in. Monday and there were not many people in the restaurant. The waitress did serve us free chips quickly and get waters. From there the service was slow or she rarely appeared. She also didn't say that extra tortillas were at a charge even though the Fajitas for 2 was enough meat to feed about 6! Amazing food!!! Totally delicious!!! Plenty of it too!! We have enough leftovers for another couple of meals. We had jalapenos stuff with mozzarella wrapped in bacon for our appetizer. We had so much food for just eating the appetizer, we hardly had any room for our fajitas. When the fajitas arrived, they were so delicious, how could we not dig into them? They were absolutely amazing. The margaritas are incredible! Tonight they had happy hour between 2 and 6, which was buy one drink get one drink free. My margarita was amazing. My friend ordered taco salad and barely a lettuce piece, greasy overcooked shell( left over from last night and reheated, or oil not hot enough ?), meat was soupy and mushy unlike any taco salad ever. No service. none. Waited for everything I think the waiter was the chef,bartender and waiter. Tortillas were "rubbery". Strange...strange! I grew up in California and travel extensively and honestly this is one of the worst Mexican meals ever despite the "authentic" music, decor and fancy but overpriced guac at your table service. Do not waste your time or money. Venice does not have any 4 or 5 star Mexican restaurants. I make much better at home. This used to be my favorite place to eat, NOT ANY MORE!!! I ordered a dish with no bell peppers and it was brought out with peppers in it so no big deal, I sent it back and asked for no peppers again. The dish came back out in about 1 minute and I started to eat it, WELL they actually just picked the peppers out and brought it back to the table. There were still some peppers in it and obviously it tasted like peppers. The waiter had to know... and when I sent it back I told him I did not want it now (we were on lunch and only had an hour) he brought out another dish and I told him I did not have time to eat it and he said you can take it to go. So as we were waiting for our bills he brought out mine and charged me for the dish I told him I should not be charged and he said oh I know and took the check. When he brought the check back out it was just the total and no receipt I asked to see the check and they only took off 50 percent of the dish! By the time all this was said and done we had to go as we were already late to go back to work from our lunch hour. I called and asked to speak to a manager he said "what am I supposed to pay for your food" and I was hung up on! Dinner comes with a ton of chips, but they don't have much flavor--not even salt. And the salsa is thin and flavorless. It's basically just canned tomato sauce. Beautiful remodeling job on the inside of the restaurant, though. Nice atmosphere except for the big screen TV that displayed a dish error message the whole time. You'd think someone would have either fixed it or turned it off, but... The Cancun burrito was pretty good but not worth twelve bucks. My wife's taco salad filling had very little meat. It seemed like a weird conglomeration of lettuce, beans and whatever was sitting around the kitchen. At one point, she aimed a fork at a cubic thing and asked, "What in the world is that?" Turns out the taco salad even had little squares of potato in it. Huh? I can make better Mexican food myself and probably will from now on. read more

2 stars because the place is nicely decorated and clean. I ordered carne asada tacos which were wonderful, everything else was mediocre at best. Beans tasted like cardboard, rice was bland and salsa was runny. The young woman at the hostess stand was pleasant. Miguel, the server wasn't great but wasn't terrible - nice guy. Giuermo the manager was hanging out at the bar and when we did ask for the bill he was not friendly at all. The enchiladas were filled with white American cheese!! That is disgusting. We're always looking for new Mexican places to try in the area, so we decided to give Plaza Mexico a try. Restaurant was fairly busy on a weeknight but were able to get a table for 4 without having to wait. Our waiter, while friendly, had to be reminded a few times to bring things like water, and gave us a little bit too much time to look over the menu. The other big issue with the place is the drinks. We ordered a margarita pitcher (exactly 4 glasses) with a decent tequila, only to receive a drink that was very weak and loaded with syrup mix. We didn't look at reviews online before going, so I peeked at Yelp on my phone at dinner and noticed a recommendation to specifically ask for fresh lime juice, which we did with our second pitcher. The result was night and day; the drink had an appropriate amount of tequila and it didn't taste like we were drinking a juicebox. Things got better with the food, however. The portions are enormous and pretty flavorful -- I had enough leftover from my meal alone to eat two hearty lunches. Despite the large selection the food came out quickly and was very fresh. Overall, we still prefer Mi Pueblo, but with a little better service and an improved margarita, Plaza Mexico could make a name for itself in Venice read more

Good Mexican food is difficult to find in this part of Florida, so it's nice to have Plaza Mexico in the area. The menu has lots of choices, so everyone should be able to find something they like. I had chicken fajitas, and they were as good as any I've had in my home state of Texas. They also have a full bar with an extensive selection of tequilas, so margarita lovers will be right at home. Our server was really nice and anxious to provide good service. I'll definitely be back to Plaza Mexico on my next trip to the Venice area. read more

They towed my car after eating lunch and spending over $100 I had a couple drinks left my car there so that I would not be drinking and driving and they towed my car.... Said it had been there for 24 hours and I paid at 4:49 pm went to pick my car up at 9:00 pm all on 1/26/16 and it had been towed because the manager Said it had been there for 24 hours so he had it towed I implore you not to go to this establishment due to there unprofessional behavior and the lack of respect to a paying customer that was done wrong... read more

I was seeking a good authentic Mexican restaurant and went there, from someone who recommended them, for the first time on 11/18 for dinner. The food was good not great: expensive for Mexican food, the portions small, the iced tea wasn't steeped enough to have any flavor at all, and the chocolate cake was dry. (just having a creamy icing doesn't make up for dry cake!) When I got home I realized I didn't have my Visa card and called them to have them check for my card and after about 5 minutes they said NO. (So they didn't bother to check very hard or long!) The next day I tore my home and car up searching all day and finally thought I'd call them one more time before cancelling my card and having alot of trouble cancelling it in dozens of areas. I again asked and sure enough it was there but put in a wrong location instead of in their Lost & Found! I went there to pick up my card and asked for the Manager to advise him of the situation. The guy who came out as manager was not friendly at all and after I told him what had occurred, all he did was make excuses and finally said "Sorry about that!" which is RUDE. He was flippant, condescending and dismissive re the event which caused me significant stress over the whole day of searching. Customer service starts at the top, and this event & his behavior shows that they take their cue from him & don't care about their customers - just the money they make off them! There are many ways he could have handled it professionally to make me feel they were actually sorry, and I would have left there as a possible return customer, but instead because of his rudeness, I will not return. There are other Mexican restaurants who understand customer service and provide good food to waste time on this one. read more
