We are staying in the area and wanted to try a new place. Bad idea. We were greeted inside by a barking dog and the smell of stale cigarette smoke. The dog, Ginger, is apparently a permanent fixture. I actually had to ask the server to remove it from my friend's leg. Are there no health inspectors here? This was no service animal, either. It's a pet and has no place in a restaurant. I'm very allergic as is my child. We should be able to safely assume no dogs will be roaming free inside a place we go for dinner. They don't even brew their iced tea. I will never understand why people serve fake tea at restaurants. It is sickening. It doesn't taste anything like tea. Don't say you have tea if you don't brew it. You're lying. The food was fine, but a bit overpriced. Save your money.

I'm out of superlatives for Hooked, but since it had been a while since we had been, I thought it…read morewise to update my review. This is a haute cuisine place that is masked by the casual dining atmosphere. Seriously: top notch chef, original recipes, a core dedication to quality seafood, paired with a fresh fish counter and some prepared food to go. We usually go for something special, but tonight I decided to get an old childhood standby, fried clams (the Boston Basket) and the fish burger sandwich. I did not expect either to be as transportive as they turned out to be. The fried clams were as delicately done as I've ever had: not crispy, but not too floppy, with excellent breading. And while I prefer my clams naked, we tried all three of the dipping sauces -- a remoulade, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce. Now normally I loathe cocktail sauce and can take tartar sauce or leave it, so I figured we'd eat up the remoulade and ignore the other two. Still, I gave them little nibbles. Man! The cocktail sauce was like no other I've had, with a heavy hint of horseradish and a far fresher flavor than I've ever had. Then the tartar sauce -- genius! It had a delicate spicing, with capers providing a floral backdrop. That was only a preliminary, as the fish burger proved to be complex, with hints of multiple kinds of fish, and a fennel-based spicing. I ended up having that afterglow, as if I'd had a couple of cocktails and was sitting next to a fireplace, that is the hallmark of truly fine food at an advanced level. We also had the usual outstanding service, attentive without being pushy. I seriously think Hooked should consider splitting into two restaurants: one where the ambiance is upgraded to match the high caliber of the food, and another cheaper one that is strictly fast casual and takeout, and they'd more than double the business. There is a restaurant back where we come from in California, Turtle Bay, that did this with fine dining on one side and the quick, simple, and affordable food on the other side, with a big shared kitchen between them but with completely separate ambiances. That way I could come back more frequently, and still have the original Hooked for special occasions!

Well, the oysters were fantastic, and that's why I made the 35 mile trip. I hate city traffic!!!…read more I also had the calamari with peppers, also good. Not like rubber bands, tender. Now the downfall, the chicken sandwich. I did notice other plates coming to tables looking like the fryer temp. is too hot, or cook time was too long. Some fish fry that came out looked quite dark as did my chicken, as you can see! A slight burnt taste was evident. It had good flavor under that burn, and the chicken was close to not being juicy, almost dry. The place is clean, and if not for the location, I would sit at the bar and have the raw bar! Something very important to me that hit me the instant I stepped through the door, if you're looking for a great shot of A/C on a hot day, not here!!! Barely got comfortable from the almost 90 degree day on a bike, and then worked up a return of sweating as the place filled up.

I'm more attracted to non-fried food so the Grilled Haddock was right up my alley. This time I had that with the side order of baked beans and macaroni salad. Again I was not disappointed. My wife gave me the thumbs up on her food also. So I guess I did good. I read the review about the cleanliness. Let me say this, this place is clean. I'm sure they have food inspectors that come in and if it was not able to pass, it would not be open. On the other review which they gave one star, I don't know when this individual called in an order but must understand that you only have a certain amount of people working, trying to please their customers so you have to give them a break. Obviously they don't want to lose customers. If it is a certain time when people are calling in phone orders and coming inside for take out, things happen. Nobody is perfect unless you walk on water. I have been telling a lot of people about this place. Thank God I'm retired and can go there anytime I want. Now I don't have to make seafood at home anymore. The only thing I'll continue making at home is the baked Salmon. Going two days in a row, I guess I'm trying to make up lost time since he has opened up. I'm good with that for sure!

The dining area had lots of decorations as you'd imagine the theme was beach like. Started off with calamari and it was very unique - the rings were cut thinner than most places and the light breading really let the flavors come through...definitely fresh and really good. Opted for the deep fried haddock and shrimp special, shrimp were very large and still had bite to them so I have to believe they were very fresh. Beer battered haddock was good - two strips with a nice coating. Took a pic of the dinner but it came out lousy - good reason to return.

We had 6pm reservations for a party of four, arrived about ten minutes early and were seated immediately. The other couple in our party had previously been here and were curious if what they ordered then would be on the menu again. Apparently, the menu is updated weekly. Starting out with cocktails, I know everyone was happy with what they were served. I certainly enjoyed my pint of Coffee Stout, and my wife was pleased with the lavender non-alcoholic cocktail they concocted for her. Because the servings being delivered to other tables appeared to be quite large, we decided to pass on appetizers, in spite of some of the apps sounding rather unique, e.g., Crispy Deviled Eggs, Open Faced Fried Pork Wantons, and Fried Carbonara. My wife was tossed between a Beet Salad with Scallops and the Pistachio Encrusted Chilean Sea Bass. At our server's recommendation she chose the Sea Bass. It was served with corn puree, confit potatoes (which my wife especially enjoyed), and roasted tomatoes. I'll get to enjoy the leftovers. I was trying to make up my mind between the Duck Pot Pie and the Chestnut Mushroom & Boursin Stuffed Tomahawk Pork Chop when our sever alerted us that there were only two servings left of the Pork Chop. I promptly claimed one of them! I am so glad I did. It was an amazingly delicious and well prepared dish. The pork had a slight pinkish color, just as I like it, the meat was so tender and flavorful, the stuffing had a crisped surface from the oven or salamander, everything was wrapped in tasty pancetta, the smashed potatoes were creamy and delicious, a white wine truffle sauce added another level of flavor, and even the carrot spears had the right level of firmness. I can affirm that my leftovers were equally enjoyable. We were not as lucky in having advance notice of the limited availability of a limoncello pie dessert, so my wife and I shared a slice of Banana Cookie Dough Pie. OMG! That was sooooo delicious. It was light, creamy, and not overly sweet. A real treat with the good coffee they serve. That pie along with something from their Lighter Menu, like a burger, would send you home in ecstasy without putting much of a dent in your wallet. Our bill for the party of four having one round of drinks, entrees, and desserts was about $250. Taking the whole dining experience into account, it was a very fair value. But wait! I have more to share with you. On Saturday nights live entertainment is provided by an excellent keyboard player adding to the inviting dinner experience and atmosphere. Great live, unobtrusive, background music is always a plus at dinner. Got a request? Art Mozeik will likely oblige. Even if you'd like to hear a song on an accordion instead of his keyboard. Find your way to Broadalbin, N.Y. for dinner. You won't be disappointed.
