Sam's Steakhouse and Seafood in Johnstown truly impressed me. My steak was cooked exactly as I like it--rare--and I appreciated that the server listened carefully and delivered just right. The rolls came out warm and comforting, and the house-made dressings on the salad were full of fresh, bright flavor. My wife had the French dip, which was spot on, with tender beef and aus jus that wasn't overly salty. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared, and the service was kind. This is quite a popular place. When we arrived at 5 on a Saturday night, we thought there'd be a wait because there were already so many cars in the parking lot. I actually called from the car but there was no wait. But they were busy so I found service just a tad slow. Our waitress was Sierra I think and she was pretty good except for taking so long to come and pick up our payment. The food was good and decent portions. The food is always good, and when dining in, the staff is always nice. I did have one bad experience with takeout. I waited at the desk for about 15-20 minutes and overheard a lot of chatter and drama from the kitchen. I even considered just leaving. The woman at the bar saw me standing there but didn't bother to check in or see what was going on. It ended up being about 40 minutes from when I called in the order. There were only people sitting at the bar it was mid afternoon after the lunch rush, so it was pretty slow. Luckily, the food was still warm, though I was concerned it might get cold from sitting there too long. It might have just been a slow day in the kitchen. read more

I wouldn't use seafood or steakhouse in the name. I ordered the broiled seafood platter and was not impressed take a look at my photo and you will understand why! I ordered the seafood chowder. Chowder shouldn't even be in the name. It had a chicken soup/broth consistency. Imitation crab was the only seafood I encountered in my bowl. My guests ordered steak and a special of stuffed peppers. When we first went in the sign said please wait to be seated. Then the hostess said sit where you want? Then seated us... at 6:56 we waited about 20 minutes then had to get the hostess attention to ask if we're getting a server soon... that was at 7:15.... the hostess brought us water at 7:17 and told us someone was coming right over. 7:19 we placed our full order. Finished at 7:23. We ordered two appetizers and two peroni beers. we got the mozzarella fried as an appetizer and a crabcake appetizer, that came with two crabcakes that came at 7:29 then appetizers. The crabcake was mushy and lacked Lump crab which was in the name (lump crab cake). It had So much breading in it,and you could tell that it wasn't fresh. There was no crab in it that we could tell...if there was, it was very processed. The taste was OK but it definitely was not a good crabcake. Especially when we come from Maryland, there is no lump crab!!!!, however the vegetable mix they had it on was like carrots and cucumbers on Romain with a sauce and some dill was very delicious. The mozzarella cheese was really good but the breading was very lacking in flavor, what saved it was the red sauce, it was spot on delicious!!!! Another plus was the beer was really good and was not skunk. 7:55 we received our salad. I personally am a huge lover of salad, and the salad was as boring as cardboard! A very boring salad. We asked for another beer each, at 8:09. He only brought one beer. We asked for two. The steak was delicious! But the knife was not great for cutting... I've absolutely no complaints with our main entrée and we got a wine glaze to go with our steak. It was kind of like a beef gravy. It was very tasty, but not what I was expecting, but went well with the potato as well and the bread rolls were also delicious. My main complaint was that the butter was cold, and it was hard to spread on the bun and the broccoli, overall I'm really happy with the food. 8:24 brought out second beer. 8:34 asked for dessert menu and he brought it out at 8:36. Then T 8:44 took desert order, and 8:50 brought out our order, then ordered our last beer. Brought it out at 8:55. The Crème brûlée was just OK. I've definitely had better. Then at 9:08 checked on us and we asked for the bill at 9:10. When the bill came we both said the same thing as we looked at it, and said it was the best 200$ (after tip) we've ever spent on a meal!! 9:20 collected bill. Now for the most disappointing part of this trip, which I'm really sad to say since with a few exceptions, and how long sometimes it took to get ... everything else seem to be so good and positive. On our way out we stopped into the bathroom, and I've got to tell you it was very filthy and didn't look like anyone had paid any attention to what was going on in there. I think maybe if we had looked in the bathrooms first, we likely wouldn't have eaten there. Simply makes me question the cleanliness of the restaurant?? if they can't even make sure that the bathrooms are clean! I can only speak for the women's room, the restroom for the men I don't know. Chuck didn't really say whether it was good or bad, so I'm assuming it was fine, but he doesn't pay attention that kind of stuff. cute little place for a small town. Known as one of the "nicer restaurants" went for a quick lunch and it was quick! my lunch came out in like 3 minutes. I tried the Seafood Bisque and a caesar salad. The seafood bisque was very very good. chunks of seafood in it and it was creamy and delightful. The salad was no good. lettuce was browning. for some reason there was an egg on the caesar salad? dressing wasn't very tasty. I would probably come back to try something else since it was so speedy for a quick lunch break. read more

08/15/2018 - Don P I had dinner there a couple of weeks ago on a Thursday night and they have some younger servers that don't seem to know the business very well and don't clean tables after people finish eating and are very slow servingSa don't even set the tables when you are seated. I had to take silverware off a table next to me. They seem to have a manager with long blonde hair that jokes around with them and doesn't care much about doing her job other than to show off in front of her young friend servers. On the other hand, I had dinner there a week before that on a Wednesday night and was served by an older professional woman server that was the best I have ever seen in that restaurant. She was the reason I went back! The owner should take a hard look at how his young waitstaff is treating his customers because I'm sure I'm not alone in seeing this. My daughter wanted to go out to dinner and her favorite restaurant in the area wasn't home so we went here instead. We're both foodies and she's eaten here quite a bit and told me not to expect great. I didn't. It wasn't. We both ordered seafood but nothing was seasoned. I find this a lot in restaurants in the area. Almost as if they're cooking without salt and having you season it yourself. It's a huge disappointment even when you have nice portions sizes (which they do here). Our server was okay but seemed to forget about us even though it wasn't busy. (She only checked back once to see if we wanted another drink before we had finished ours but not again so we even ordered a dessert to go due to the wait.) The wait was one of the major downfalls because the restaurant wasn't busy. Also, the cost; it was only myself, my daughter, and my granddaughter but the bill was a whopping $150.00 and that was for two adult meals, one child's meal, two mixed drinks, one Shirley Temple, and a dessert. If I'm going to drop $150, I want the food to come out before 45 minutes to an hour, I'd like it to be seasoned, and I'd like to have something to wash it down with or at least someone checking to be sure we don't need anything else so can't see my foodie frugal self returning anytime soon. read more

Huge Romanas fan and this place is owned by the same family. Wanted to get something fancier today so we went with Sams. We used door dash so you can add another $25. Onto the already high bill to add insult to injury. But here's the skinny..... seafood brodetto was a huge portion. It weighed a ton pulling it out of the bag. That is exciting because I love leftovers. When opening it I was splashed with liquid, so much liquid. I poured out over a full cup of orange liquid. It wasn't appealing to the eye. I attached a picture of it gently slid onto a bowl plate as the tin it came in was a mess. The smell was immediately alarming. It was off putting. Loaded with calamari and I think the sauce had chopped clams in it but there was far too much of it. The two shrimp both had some shell left on them that gave me that instant gag reflex' much like getting an eggshell would do. There was a generous portion of Scallops but upon first bite it was apparent where the smell was coming from. The scallops were bad. They had that bad ammonia taste and smell that bad seafood gets. I ordered it spicy and it was ok on the spice level but the final straw deeming the entire dish inedible was the salt content. I am someone who always tends to go heavy on the added salt and this was even too much for me. $24 straight to the trash bc the dog literally wouldn't touch it. Next, we ordered wings , which everyone says are so crispy and delicious there but were very gelatinous and not just from travel. They weren't fried long enough. We ordered them hot and they weren't even mild. We got a delmonico with homemade steak fries and we LOVE romanas steak fries on the rare occasion they have them on the specials. These were nothing like Romanas steak fries. They were uniformly dark brown looked, smelled and tasted Burnt but not in a good crispy way. Delmonico was ordered medium well (which trust me , is just an awful way To order steak and I pre-warned her that the result would end up "well" ) and it turned up obviously well with absolutely no pink. Sam's offers full-size dinners, but I am a pub food type of girl...so I must confess absolute joy when I discovered Sam's offers a "lighter" fare menu section. #1 Sam's has the very best buffalo wings in the Fulton county area... JUMBO tender wings... fried to a perfect crispness and tossed with a buffalo sauce that takes your breath away. You know that intense "tang" a true old school buffalo sauce has? Yes, there is heat... but then also that ZING we are all looking for? Yep, Sam's nailed it. Their burgers are cooked to order- perfectly. Fries are generous and also fried perfectly. Craft beer offerings.... well selected (Druthers IPA) which pairs well with the other sandwiches on the menu... Reuben, steak sandwich, flash fried fish and grilled chicken are all worth a taste. Service is attentive and friendly and prices are affordable. Most tavern fare items are $9 and I think the shaved steak sandwich is $10. The portions are generous... I haven't seen a $9 3/4 lb. angus burger with cheese on challah bun in quite awhile! Kudos to Sam's for dealing out affordable deliciousness to the masses. read more

Half of what we ordered was heaven; only the other half felt like the Salt Bae's evil twin got to some of our dishes; I'm going to call him Salt-Boo. The Seared Scallops were perfect; taste and texture, and the Penne a la Vodka was a party on our palate. The Baked Salmon was typical, but kudos to not drying out the salmon. Luckly Salt-Boo didn't get to these orders or the salad. Not to mention the free-flow bread rolls that tasted great! (Needs olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip them in though, but I won't be too fussy about this.) Unfortunately the Pork Loin and Bacon in Brown Ale Sauce and one of the penne sides were not safe from Salt-Boo's mischief. The Chicken Noodle soup was too salty. The French Onion Soup was more salt than soup or onion. And I don't know what happened to the Wellingtons, but they were not as crispy as they should be. I will give one whole star for the service alone. Our server was very courteous and helpful. She even got the Salt-Boo-touched penne side replaced. We drove from Howe Caverns to Sam's Restaurant which was an hour drive, so we were expecting a delicious dinner. When we arrived, we thought it must be a good restaurant since many cars were parked there. The restaurant was packed and we had to wait for a few minutes to be seated. The restaurant has a homey feeling with the wooden furnishing. The waitress was very attentive. The appetizers, lightly fried calamari and bistro style steamed clams, were flavorful. The bread was freshly baked (so delicious). The seafood bisque was not heavy. It tasted good with the bread. The salad was fresh, but we know it was pre-made. The sole dish was acidic and salty. I ended up eating the sole's flesh and a bit of rice. My boyfriend said the lamb shank was not flavorful without the other ingredients, so if you were to eat the shank, you have to in-cooperate it with the sauce, but the ingredients should have been infused into the meat. Our guess was that the shank was boiled and then baked with the ingredients. Overall, our dinner was good. read more

Imagine, phase three COVID and our first time in a restaurant in MONTHS. It was my son's birthday and we decided to give it a go. SO glad we did! The staff was amazing, especially our waiter, Johnny! The place was spotless, everyone adhered to all the safety precautions, we felt "safe" and not overwhelmed by other customers at all. So very pleased. Oh, and the food was amazing too!!! We had a full spread from the calamari appetizers to the twin lobster tails, scallops with lobster sauce, and dessert! And a very cute "Happy Birthday" song as well Highly recommended!!! My family and I have eaten here several times. To be fair, some experiences were better than others. But, the last two times my wife and I ate at Sam's, we were disappointed to say the least. During our last visit, my wife and I were celebrating our anniversary. My wife ordered the seafood bisque which was gritty, I ordered the French onion, which was ok at best. I ordered the seafood Newburgh, which was ok. My wife ordered a steak (from sams steakhouse).....seems like they should get that right, but sadly no. The cut was not a good cut of meat, way to grizzled and fatty. My wife only ate a few bites. If we were eating at a diner, the food was great. For a steak and seafood restaurant (that's not cheap), very disappointing. We won't be rushing back. Like many other restaurants, they've failed to maintain their initial high standards. read more

So I have read many of the reviews that have negativity about the food and/or the service. We are local people so getting to Sams is easy for us. We too, a year or more ago, were frustrated with the quality of the food served. We would have good dinners and not so great dinners. Consistency was a big issue. HOWEVER, we have now been there at least 6 times in the past 2 months and have had nothing but great service and top quality food. In fact, as a family, we celebrated Valentines Day at Sam's. A fairly large group. We were very lucky to get a waiter named Charlie. Charlie was very interactive with our group despite how busy he was with multiple tables. He had a great personality and was there every time we needed him. We even had a 5 year old birthday girl with us. Charlie brought her a slice of birthday cake with a candle burning. We ordered steaks, prime rib, and lamb from the regular menu. Everything came out cooked perfectly and in a timely manner. Remember it was Valentines Day and the place was packed. Sam's is a small town business. There are bound to be times when something is off. If it is, instead of posting something negative, give them an opportunity to fix the problem and make it right. I do not know who owns the business and I certainly do not know anyone that works there. But small business needs our support during these difficult times. I too am a small business owner. I would not want a poor review and/or a customer mad at me because I made a mistake. I would alway want to correct it. Keep up the good work Sam's crew! And don't lose Charlie!!! read more

The lobster bisque, perfectly cooked fried calamari, and the pistachio encrusted lamb chop a perfect medium rare. This place was amazing!!!!!! We went on Cinco de Mayo so there was a $5 margarita special and they did not disappoint! I got the watermelon and was worried it'd be too sweet but it was perfect. There wasn't a single complain about the food (appetizers included) which is pretty rare for us, as we are a rather large group. I got a chicken pasta with veggies in a garlic wine sauce and holy moly was it good! So much flavor, lots of garlic and everything was cooked perfectly. Seriously, it was even delicious leftover! This was the first place I've been that gives you sorbet to cleanse your palate and it made me feel kind of fancy. So I love that! lol Plus, our server was incredibly attentive and friendly. My boyfriend's mom got a different flavored margarita and didn't like the taste, and he didn't bat an eyelash or seem bothered by it at all when she asked to swap it for a different one.
