The good- it's a cute place. The bad- the wait time for all guest in our party to receive their meal was long, they forgot the appetizers and brought them out late, and it felt like the contractors/Samsung workers that had been seated after us had been given priority in service.

The food here is great and the service truly wonderful. There is sometimes a wait, but it is well worth it. The New Orleans shrimp appetizer is a must! That Cajun gravy/sauce is heavenly, and the baguette is perfectly toasted. We've had an assortment of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items here and all of them were very satisfying. Bacon is thick cut and so very delicious, the assortment of breads we've had have all been scrumptious, fries are battered with that perfect crispiness, pancakes, super fluffy and delicious, you can't go wrong with their biscuits and gravy, and they're sure to have something for everyone since their entire menu is served all day. The cheesy grits were slightly bland and the seasonal vegetables were overly oily. But otherwise everything has hit the spot!

    Meatloaf. Everything was perfect.

Great food, service set in an old band building. Git the meatloaf plus mashed potatoes and green beans. Seasoned perfectly. Great service!

Grandson ordered chicken fried steak, mac & cheese, and french fries.... He said it was really good.

We were seated immediately. For a Friday night I think that's awesome.! I said, came over promptly asking us if we were ready to order, at this point, he had already ordered our packages. The service is here is really great. !! To be continued : My grandson ordered chicken fried steak, mac & cheese and french fries chicken fried steak was huge and beautifully fried with cream gravy. He has a hefty appetite, but it was so large. He ended up leaving a small piece of it as he was just too full/ his french were OK and he ate all his mac & cheese one of his very favorite dishes. I decided on the meat salad with goat cheese and poppyseed dressing. It also had pecans sprinkled throughout. It was delicious. It was massive so next time I will order a half portion. I also ordered tortilla soup which came with five or six tortilla chips. It was quite good But very spicy. They also have a bakery and make a lot of pies and cakes. There was no way we could eat dessert, but we definitely stopped at the Bakery Case and ordered some Red Velvet Cake for the boys and a piece of Coconut Cream Pie for me. The restaurant has several unique features, including a bar along one side of the restaurant where you can get beer, wine, and cocktails. It had a massive chandelier that was vintage and quite beautiful in the center surrounded by other light fixtures. The tables and chairs and the booths also reminded me of vintage café style furnishings . The round tables and chairs were very unique in that barrel style. Bottom of the tables were a metal cut out design, making them very unique. Our server was absolutely wonderful. Very patient and helpful. Next time I'm in town I will definitely return.!!!

Great local diner serving what I would call "upscale" diner food. They always have a good selection of cakes and pies. The wait staff is usually local young folks and it's not bad service. The menu here is not lacking but sometimes I still find myself looking for something more. We do love the options for sides though, you want a side of bacon with your meatloaf, no problem, deviled eggs for a side, got you covered, how about some Texas caviar! My wife was a little disappointed they were out of salmon which was her first choice but the filet she ordered instead was really good - quality tender meat, could have used a bit more seasoning but we were impressed with the quality of the cut. I had the roasted beet salad as a side and it was fantastic! Highly recommend. I also had the pork tenderloin with a honey mustard sauce. The tenderloin was tender but maybe a tad dry from being slightly overcooked, overall I felt it was ok. We both got deviled eggs as a side, they were a little dry, not much seasoning going on but we do like the option of a deviled egg as a side so we were ok with it but it could be better. Wished I could do half stars, this is a 4.5 in my book.

Cute, fresh baked cookies that are huge! This is more like 2-3 cookies in 1!

Food is always fresh and delicious. If you want a place that is sit down and unique, not your average chain restaurant, this is the spot for you. Excellent baked goods and the breakfast is delicious!

This is the best!! Plowman's Kitchen has repurposed the old Taylor High School - in particular, the band hall! There are decorations of a drum set as the chandelier when you enter the front door, a bass drum as a table, many instruments adorn the walls in addition to old photos of majorettes, stage band, and students from THS! So creative! The food!!!! The BEST biscuits and gravy ever! The biscuits must have been placed on the grill first which gave them a bit of a crunch on the outside and fluffy, yummy, inside. The gravy was not "pasty" or didn't appear to come from an envelope. The eggs were fluffy. We loved our waitress! The cafe is pretty and feels airy. A+

Standard bfast with fruit, biscuits and gravy!

Came around 9:30am on a Sunday. Not too many folks eating, and therefore the wait staff was extremely accommodating and allowed us to sit outside with our dog! The food order was taken quickly (and again they were VERY accommodating to specific substitution requests!). We both got the standard breakfast (eggs, sausage/bacon, and a side). I upgraded to the biscuits and gravy. The food was filling but not overly heavy as can sometimes happen with diner food. Some of my fruit was in bad shape, but there was a large enough portion that I could pick around it! The tables outside were a bit dirty, but it was our choice to sit outside. Overall nice visit and quality food at a damn good price!

Staff was great. Inside was clean and nice. Food was reasonably priced but small in portions for the price and really dry. But maybe just a bad day. I'll try again one day.

When you first walk in you're met with some unique decor: lights made out of drums, clarinets repurposed as lamps, high school band photos along the walls, with shakos atop the waiting area. It was very niche and intriguing- something I've not seen in a restaurant before. Our wait time wasn't too long, we were seated and helped in a timely manner. They had a display case of desserts that were calling my name but breakfast was the plan. I orders the Brussels sprouts for the table appetizer with some waters to wash it down. They were topped with bell pepper and a balsamic glaze. Think the dish would have been better with tomatoes rather than bell peppers and maybe a bit more glaze but it was still pretty good. For the main course I was torn between a sandwich and eggs Benedict. Per the server's recommendation I ordered the eggs Benedict paired with homestyle breakfast potatoes. With my son accompanying me, I ordered him the kids pancake plate paired with homestyle breakfast potatoes, sausage, and scrambled eggs. Our breakfast orders are where this restaurant loses a few stars from me. When I first received my eggs Benedict the eggs were way overcooked- almost hard boiled. A traditional eggs Benedict has a poached egg that is runny in the middle- these eggs did not give, the runniest part of the egg was the hollandaise on top. I asked if they could be remade because they were very clearly made incorrectly. The waitress was very understanding and could see the issue with the quality. I did have to wait a while for a new plate but I still had some Brussel sprouts to snack on. When I received a fresh plate the eggs were properly poached and made for an enjoyable meal. The kid's pancake plate posed another egg issue but this time undercooked. I have a toddler with a huge appetite, he ate a few of the scrambled eggs and then refused them. Nearly half of the eggs were undercooked- egg whites still wiggling around making for an unsafe meal for my toddler. The sausage, pancake, and potatoes were all great. The sausage is some of the best breakfast sausage I've had but they definitely missed the mark with their eggs. With eggs being a huge staple in our breakfast experience I was very dissatisfied with the inconsistencies and lack of proper preparation.

Best food ever! Charming staff amazing place!

My daughter-in-law had gotten a new refrigerator right before they left for vacation so there was barely anything in it. They have a wonderful pantry and I ate a Ramen out of the pantry Saturday night for supper but just couldn't find anything. I was hungry for in there on Sunday. Anyway, I was hunting some food to have delivered on Sunday. I had never even ordered takeout from any place in Taylor or Hutto and it took me a while to find something that could accommodate all my needs -but Randy's Icehouse to the rescue!! The first time I ate there I had my grandsons with me and we all had burgers along with some fries and onion rings we shared and everything was delicious and cooked to order. Yesterday, I chose a Chicken Fried Steak dinner with a baked potato , a side of mushrooms and a side salad. I enjoyed the CFS once I removed most of the breading (don't get me wrong. It was nice and crispy-I just wasn't in the mood for it) it was easy to remove, and the steak itself was cooked properly, there was cream gravy to go over it, and I ate it with my canned Mushrooms on the side. My Baked Potato was on the small side, but it was delicious and all the logical condiments like shredded cheese, sour cream, & butter were all included (in little cups) so I could use what and how much of those I wanted. It also came with a slice of Texas Toast and a Side Salad, which was freshly chopped lettuce with bacon, and croutons, and had the blue cheese dressing I had ordered on the side. Even without the breading on the meat, I was full before I ever made it to the Texas toast. I focused on the chicken fried steak, the gravy and the baked potato. It was all very good. Not sure why, but I didn't care for the mushrooms too much , I knew they would be canned, but they had a little bit of a tinny flavor so I ate a couple of those, but then left the rest. The blue cheese dressing was great, not sure if it was homemade, but there were small chunks of blue cheese evident, which I appreciated. Because I had filled up on my steak and potato I only ate about a third of the salad. The only thing I missed was the woman who was our server last time I went with my grandsons -as she was very pleasant and nice to talk to! I'm very grateful they were open on the Fourth of July weekend and even more grateful that Toast was able to deliver it to me out at my son's house-which I consider to be in the boonies -but then a lot of Taylor /Coupland area is! Looks like this is going to be my go to place if I need some good home cooking out that way!! If you haven't been it's worth the drive!!!

I think Chicken Fried Steak is one of the best defining dishes of Southern cuisine. I think Chicken…read moreFried Steak is an item that has kept the people of the Southern United States together regardless of interests, jobs, intelligence, and opinions. It is a unifying meal of blue-collared and white-collared people alike. It is a food that unifies the vast cultures of the south. There is no debate when there is a Chicken Fried Steak. Soul food and southern food are so severely important to people who were raised in the south because the overall feeling of those cuisines is that it feels like their Grandma is cooking dinner. Now if you look at my Yelp profile picture for a fraction of a second and maybe stereotype a little, you can accurately assume that my Grandma's cooking would fit in the latter and you would maybe wonder if my grandmother knows what seasoning is. If you have had her chili, you would say no. The famous Texan Cafe & Pie Shop in Hutto is a classic Southern diner that is always a perfect pick-me-up meal and is a truest staple of the area. When I first visited Hutto before moving I looked for places to try, and the abundant and sheer quantity of reviews for Texan Cafe made it clear that I had to try it. That was just over a year ago, and I still remember parking my car in the lot across the street and walking into the cozy diner with wood chairs and booths, red tablecloths, and so much decor on the walls it might be a museum, and I felt right about moving to Hutto. I was seated immediately and almost instantly ordered the Chicken Fried Steak smothered with white gravy, of course, with sides of Fried Okra and Mashed Potatoes. It was not long before the beautiful plate hit my table, and I destroyed everything on that plate. When I thought it was over, I was handed the dessert menu that was two full rows worth of pie and other options. I was mesmerized by the length of it and was overwhelmed by the options. I texted my parents to tell them and suddenly I was going back to San Antonio with slices on slices worth of pie for them to have. When my parents came up to help move me in, they wanted to go to the Texan. They were impressed with how great the meal was alongside the pies. Pies that they bought extra of to take back with them to San Antonio. When I started my job, the first meal they took us new hires to was the Texan. I tried their Blue Plate Special and found out that Chicken Fried Pork Chops exist and fell in love with that. When my brother came and visited meeting my parents and me in Hutto, we went to the Texan. We enjoyed their appetizers and everyone had to have a slice of pie. Options for everyone. When a friend came and visited, she took a solo trip to the Texan while I was at work then told me she took the best nap of her life after. My buddy and I decided to go randomly one day after work to try their Hot Pie with Brandy Sauce. That thing is a tank and is worth a visit to try alone. What a sweet creation. When my girlfriend visited me in Hutto, I took her to the Texan and she will randomly text me about how much she misses the pie. I try to get her a slice every time she comes and visits. It is her favorite thing. It is clear to see why it is a favorite to so many because everyone I have taken to the Texan has left a fan wanting to come back. I brought my grandparents home a full Blueberry pie from the Texan Cafe which my grandma told me "was the best I have even since I was a little girl. Not too sweet with a great crust. Just right. A blueberry pie is my favorite." I know this review is less of a review and more of a collection of vignettes of many stories built inside the walls of the Texan Cafe, but that is what is so beautiful about southern hospitality and southern diners. That is why there is so much decor about the extensive history of Texan Cafe and the culture of Hutto on the walls. I went back this afternoon for the first time in a short while, but I find myself continuously impressed by the quality of the food, the efficiency as a whole, and just how welcoming everyone is inside. Their pies are just truly next level. Today, I went for the Chicken Fried Pork Chop Blue Plate Special which is truly heaven sent, potato salad, fried okra, and a slice of their cherry pie. It is a meal you feel blessed to eat and a restaurant you love supporting because of it. Every pie I have had at the Texan is better than any other pie I have eaten. They could be a full time bakery and still be the monument of Hutto. It just happens they have food that warms your heart too. RIYL: Grandma's cooking if it was not dry
