It has been a very long time since I've been to Ploy Thai. It was our go-to for all things Thai when we moved to this area 15 years ago. I admittedly haven't been back because there are newer Thai restaurants that are closer to me. My visit this past week was for an impromptu team lunch. There were hits and misses, but it was still a very enjoyable lunch. First of all I must comment on the ornate decor that makes you feel like you're in an imperial Thai palace. It's very elegant and contributes greatly to the whole experience. The atmosphere and decor really sets Ploy Thai above the rest. The service is also very attentive, or at least it was during this lunch experience. I've been for dinner many times in the past and it was pretty top notch even back then. I think my favorite dinner item was the Basa Seafood in ginger sauce. I remember loving that sauce with the fresh ginger. Also, the Thai tea is always a winner. My recent lunch experience was a little different. You actually get a bowl of chicken and rice soup, as well as a spring roll with your meal. Both items are delicious. A coworker ordered the Thai Crab Roll. I wish I had taken a picture of it. They looked like crab rangoons, but were stuffed with a fine mixture of crab and seafood. Way better than rangoons. This is one of their specialties that I would get again. I'm so glad I got to taste one. I also got the Duck Noodle Soup off their daily lunch menu. This was a bit of a miss for me. I was expecting the broth to be light and fresh like the one at Wat Mongkolratanaram. This broth tasted more like a cross between a pho and an udon noodle broth. It was more complex in taste, and maybe more of what someone would expect in a beef pho. It was a little sweet and sour which was kind of odd to me. The duck was plentiful but I would have expected the skin to be crispy. It had cilantro and crunchy garlic bits as well as wide noodles. The taste was okay, but it wasn't great. I also had to ask for a seasoning tray because it needed some kind of spice to give it a little heat. It's not something I'd order again. Other than that, everything was very good and as expected. My other coworkers loved their meals. One needed more seasoning for a dish that was supposed to already be spicy, but she liked it after adding chili oil and chili pepper flakes. Another had the fried eggplant with green curry that looked very good. I'll try that next time. Service was quick and professional. It's a great place for a business lunch, or any occasion. read more

This place is delicious! We've had takeout from here multiple times, but this was our first time dinning in and had a great experience. Our night started with some Hot Sake and a Kirin Beer. We then had the Fresh Spring Rolls, which are delicious with their Peanut Sauce, then the Nam Sod, which is a Ground Pork dish served over thick Cabbage Leaves, which you can use to scoop up the pork, this is a good dish to share. And then, for our entrees, we both got Panang Curry, my wife had the Tofu while I had the Squid. She ordered medium while I asked for Thai Hot, to my surprise it wasn't hot, but it was delicious regardless! Overall, the total bill was $73, for three drinks, two appetizers, and two entrees. Whenever I want authentic Thai food, this is where I go. When you walk in, the ambiance will immediately win you over. Beautiful carvings and statues adorn the entrance and inside of this small, but beautiful Thai restaurant. The staff is very attentive and greets you at the door with a warm and friendly smile. I just love the vibe of this place. They offer an extensive Thai menu with all the classics like panang curry, massaman curry, Pad Thai, Pad See-ew and everything in between. For lunch, you can't beat their "Love Box". Sure it has a silly name, but it is amazing. You get a little bit of several items complete with a chicken/rice soup. Sushi: 4.. lost a point because some of the yummy sushi combinations and rolls are no longer available: such as rock and raw & tuna tuna tuna...which made me super sad.. also pricing has gone up .. sashimi dinner along with a few other combinations when up in price $30.95 from 26.95... Thai food: a 3... it's ok, not great..Thai hot is mild..also, prices when up a bit for the entrees too. Great food and reasonably priced. The menu has options for everyone. This restaurant serves Chinese, Japanese, and Thai cuisine. There is also a sushi bar available. The severs are accommodating and prompt. There is a daily specials board with other options if you can't decide on something from the menu. I ordered the Panang duck. Went here for my anniversary dinner as an alternate place and found a new favorite restaurant. Very moderately priced and the best Tai you will get!. It's a very cozy motif. Nice place to go for a date night or just together with some friends. Small restaurant but has great atmosphere in wonderful staff. I would recommend this to anyone over and over and over and over again. I plan on going back as much as possible to try every dish they have. It was that darn good! Now that I've hit all the Chinese restaurants in Brandon, I decided to switch it up and move on to Thai. Ploy Thai was nicely furnished and clean. I was quickly greeted and seated in a booth. The decorations were nice, though this is one of those restaurants where the put a fancy tablecloth on the table with a Plexiglas cover over it. The silverware was a bit utilitarian as were the chop sticks. I ordered the wonton soup and the Pad Thai. The wonton soup was a bit thin for my taste, though I am used to the Chinese version. The Pad Thai was listed on the menu as including chicken, and below it was a statement that any substitutions were an extra cost (I think $1). The waitress did ask what meat I wanted, chicken, beef, or shrimp. Not sure if this was an obvious attempt to up sell or not. Everything was a little bland for my tasted, but in general I am a fan of spicy food, so take that for what it's worth. Service was excellent, I was well attended, food came out quickly and was very hot, and my drinks were constantly being filled. No wait for the check when I was finished, and my server took the check and payment. Definitely deserves a try if Thai food is what you are looking for. read more

Chicken rice soup $3 - Big portion, great broth. It's a simple soup consisting of rice and chicken. The garlic flavor in the broth is very good. Panang Curry with Pork $11 - The curry base was creamy and delicious. I enjoyed the cucumbers in this dish. The pork were thinly sliced, but not that tasty. I would try chicken instead. My order was for take out and I ordered a Kirin to drink while I waited. They had a sushi bar in the back that looked good. Beside a small selection of beer, they also offer wine. Florida rains and covid limit date night activities so husband and I decided to eat in tonight. We read reviews on the restaurant and they were amazing that we thought it was a perfect choice. Externally it looked pretty good although I could tell it was a bit dry and the disappointment outweighed far more than the looks of the food. We ordered chicken Pad see ew. We ordered two different spice levels and both were zero spice. The food itself had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. Not even a hint. It's not my first time eating Thai and honestly I love Thai but this was disappointing. The spring rolls were good, which we ordered as well but unfortunately we will not come back to this establishment. We wanted to love it as we live so close but this is not the case. Looking around for new, fun local spots around the house for when we just get tired of the same ol' burgers or pizza. Tonight we decided on Thai, and Ploy Thai had reviews that looked good, so we gave it a shot and ordered takeout. I will say they were super fast and told us only (15) minutes, which was wildly different from our last spot before we moved -- a nice surprise. We ordered Massaman Curry (served with white rice), Pad Thai, Spicy Noodle (chose chicken for the protein), and Fried Rice with Chicken (plus we requested to add Pork). Like most Thai places you choose the heat level, and being new to this establishment we safely opted for Medium. All dishes are one size at dinner, so that was easy. The Massaman Curry was very good. The curry was coconut milk base which countered the heat of the red pepper, and the potatoes, thick cut onions, and peanuts just went so perfect together, and over the white rice was outstanding. Unfortunately, this is where it ended for me. The Chicken Fried Rice we requested the Pork be added to, we received the upcharge for the additional protein, we just didn't get the pork added -- so I couldn't tell you how that was. The remaining three dishes were over cooked and every. single. one. of them, the protein was dry and leaning towards the hard and chewy point. The Spicy Noodles had decent flavor, and the heat level at medium was perfect for us, the thicker noodle was exactly what I was looking for as far as mouth feel / texture. But past the heat it was bland. I will say the same for the Fried Rice and Pad Thai, if the dishes solely relied on flavor from the ingredients it wouldn't be much to write home about at all. The heat is the only flavor that comes through. The dishes are decent size, same lunch-time plastic containers from Chinese takeout, not huge. The total came to $70, so average $17.50 a dish. I just don't think the lack of flavor and portion size was worth it. If we try again, it'll just be a double order of the Massaman. read more

I have been coming here forever. It was one of my ex husbands fav spots as he LOVES spicy food. And by spicy, I mean "chemical burn on your tongue because you're an idiot and wonder why your stomach hurts" type of spicy. They allow you to request the spice degree for your food. I'm not a spicy food eater because I'm a wimp so the fact that they give you different options is awesome. You get to pick your protein for their entree items. I get the sweet and sour shrimp entree. And the crab Rangoon and pork rolls are so yummy. I could eat a old leather boot with their plum sauce on it, it's delicious! The staff here are always amazing and the restaurant itself has such a cool vibe and the aesthetics makes you feel like you're actually in Thailand and not the suburbs outside Tampa. We called the store and instead of being helpful the woman argued with me and refused to correct the order. We order from this place frequently and today will be the last time. Just finished an enjoyable lunch at Ploy Thai in Brandon. We were in the area and found this restaurant on Yelp. We decided to try Ploy Thai based on the reviews from others. I had the lunch portion of Shrimp in Garlic Sauce. YUM! YUM! The dish was delicious. It had a great garlic taste with a hint of black pepper. I definitely would order this dish again. My husband had Beef in Chili Sauce with no rice. He asked for extra vegetables, which there was a slight up charge. We enjoyed the Sushi lunch deal. Two rolls plus soup and appetizer for $12.00. Ambience: It reminded me of the restaurants seen on Hollywood movie sets. They have very dim but red lighting. Kind of cool and different from other Thai restaurants. It did distinctly remind of of Thailand evening district. Service: Service was poor. I waited 10 minutes before she came and took my drink order. Then I requested a glass of red wine. This took another 10 minutes. She finally took my order after 20 minutes of waiting. Yes the server was not in any hurry to wait on me. Lastly, it took her 10 minutes to bring my check and return my credit card. She definitely was not aware of my request. Not once did she ask how I was doing and if the food was ok. I might as well have served myself. Food: I ordered fresh spring rolls but our came the fried spring rolls. The fresh spring was not so fresh. The chicken tasted like cool presses chicken. Do not order unless you want slimy spring roll skin with compressed faux chickens. I ordered the Tofu with rice noodles and Vegetable soup. This was the beef noodle which she allowed me to sub the beef with the tofu. The broth was very good. But beware of the peanuts crumbs. The soup was so hot and spicy it made me sweat. Good flavors though. There was no vegetable just some cilantro and scallions. This was not the tofu with vegetable that I had really wanted. Overall, I have had great Thai food at other restaurants and this place was just ok not Great based on the price of what was received. This place is all about ambience. I feel like I have arrived in beautiful Thailand. Gold sparkly purple tablecloths with bamboo placements with a pretty ribbon and elephants. The ceilings are covered with draped sheer fabrics and lights going across them. Lots of wood on the walls and gold statues. It's not tacky. Very tasteful and elegant. The music is quiet enough where you can have a conversation yet still enjoy it. That's always appreciated. It's located right in the heart of Brandon about 5 minutes from I -75 next to Chilis. We ordered the Thai spring rolls and they were crunchy and delicious. Served with a sweet plum sauce. I had the Penang Curry and I must say it was fabulous. Loaded with green peppers and zucchini. The zucchini was okay but then again I don't love zucchini. Large enough portion for $11.99. My husband had the cashew chicken with a medium spice. It had a healthy portion of mushrooms, onion, green peppers and carrots. Although, he thinks the portions are for small guys. Both plates had a really cute heart shaped portion of rice. The service was exceptional. All the servers were dressed adorable. They looked like Hello Kitty dolls. The very attentive to our needs. Much appreciated here. We will be back. read more

Ploy Thai is VERY hit or miss for me. There are day days I go in and it's spot on and then there are others where I wonder why I go in at all. Now, I've never been in for dinner so I can't speak to that, but the lunch portions are fairly priced and taste pretty darn good on their good days. I order mine "Thai hot", but I need the spice rack in addition as it never really comes out with any spice at all. AT ALL. Right when I walked in, I was amazed by the beautiful decor. Everywhere I'd look there was something gold and unique (just look at the photos). Right away this place was fine dining with petite tables and delicate table settings. Even the servers are dressed in colorful Thai attire so I really felt as if we were in Thailand minus the language barrier. They were all friendly and attentive and I especially loved the attention to detail throughout the restaurant. I arrived with a good friend and fellow yelper during lunch time and ordered from the lunch special. I was craving something with seafood so I ordered the Seafood w/ Green Curry, which was really good. It was hardy, sweet and spicy, yet very light. I ordered Thai Hot, but in my opinion it wasn't hot enough. The presentation of the dish was too cute to eat. I also loved how they served us their house soup and crab ragoon which was included with our meal. Everything tasted wonderful and I ended up finishing my dish because the portion was just right.
