Surprisingly, the crispy California roll ended up being my favorite. The spicy kani salad tasted a bit premade, and the cucumber slices were a little soft, but that was the only downside. Plum House is a lovely sushi restaurant in a super quaint area with plenty of parking. My group popped in for an early lunch and we received great service. With various orders, our food came out quickly and we were able to enjoy everything together. There were plenty of vegetarian options for me and I enjoyed my rolls, but I did bring my own soy sauce since most restaurants do not carry gluten-free. Not the best quality but better than I was expecting. Prices are very reasonable and service was good. We tried a bunch - the Thai crab Rangoons are probably the only item I wouldn't order again. Tuna tartare was good, we also had a sashimi combo for 2 which was pretty good overall. And they had CA uni so we had them make some nigiri for us, surprisingly good. Food overall is probably a 3.5 but for the area it's great and price is spot on. They have nice outside seating and there was a live band when we ate there. read more

I've been on a Sushi rating kick lately and I have to say I found my favorite Fluke sashimi! It's very difficult to find good Fluke, it's a pretty gamy white fish. To find it tender, not easy. And Plum House has given me the best Fluke I've had yet! The interior is bland, boring and a little chilly (wear a sweater). But they have delicious sushi rolls that change often. We used to order take-out from Plum House regularly. Post-COVID, things have really gone downhill. The place does not feel or look as clean as it should considering that they are handling raw fish out in the dining room area. The other night we ordered take-out and found a roach cooked into the tuna on top of our sushi roll. Yes, a roach. I will spare you all the grossness by posting it here, but we absolutely have pictures. So I called them to let them know, expecting an apology at the very least, but instead, unbelievably I was asked whether I wanted to reorder the roll! After I explained that quite the contrary, I wanted a refund on my order, I was met with confusion and reluctance. Finally they agreed to refund me for only the cost of that particular roll. Nothing else. No apology. Nothing. A mere $12 refund. We will never be ordering from here again. read more

Took a chance on this place around New Years because I saw a Facebook add. I was not disappointed at all. Knowing good quality sushi and fish left me me disappointed almost every time other places. It's hard to find a place that doesn't have previously frozen fish. I have a friend that owned and was a chef at an upscale sushi restaurant. I have ordered many party trays of different varieties all awesome. I have always done takeout but the restaurant itself is cute and quiet. Staff are very friendly also. Our go to spot for years now and no matter what the circumstances are ( crowded or as so many businesses are these days , short staffed) the wait and the mild chaos are NOTHING in comparison with the quality of the food and the great feeling of being welcomed each and every time. I can count on one hand how many eateries have survived intact thru these last few years of madness...i am happy to say the Plum House has... I guess if for some reason others have not had a "great" experience or felt slighted, they might want to dial down the entitlement and think about where would we eat if this gem had to shut down during another pandemic....lighten up people, it's just about eating and being grateful. This Review is based on going here for an unexpected early dinner on a Saturday.. We sat at the sushi bar and spoke with the sushi chef.. we got some beers and they gave us a roll that was on the house and also let us try some octopus because I had mentioned Ive never had it before.. We got there at the perfect time because the place was dead at around 4:30ish (which we thought was odd but soon, the people started flocking in for dinner) the service we received was above and beyond. Andy the sushi chef was a blast to talk to and he was very personable! The waitress we had was very attentive and nice. The establishment was clean and the floors in the kitchen were clean from what I could see.. The sushi was DYNAMITE! We love this place and the sushi sooo much, that at around 10:30pm that SAME NIGHT, we showed back up with some friends and had more beers and sushi! If I could give 0 stars I would, but unfortunately I have to give at least 1. I used to order from here all the time, this was my go to sushi spot, until yesterday. I ordered sushi on Saturday for pick up. Got home ate majority of it and put the rest in the fridge to have at a later date. I started eating it yesterday until I noticed a dead cockroach embedded in one of the rolls. I called the restaurant to let them know what I discovered. They were completely unphased at what was being brought to their attention and asked if I wanted another order! YEAH, I'M GOOD, THANKS! They couldn't figure out how to refund my credit card so my husband had to go in person for a cash refund. He arrived to receive only a refund for the roll that had the roach ($12) and not the rest of the almost $50 spent that night. I honestly don't even care about the money, I mostly care about the causal nature in which they took this situation as if a roach in your food is not a big deal, which leads me to believe that they are infested with roaches and are therefore numb to their existence in their restaurant. I used to park right by here all the time when V&J was still open, and I never really noticed Plum House. So much so that when my father told me where to go to join my family for dinner, I had no clue where he was talking about. It looks almost like it's closed from the outside; coming in, the place is oddly dark with a sushi bar in the back. It's the sort of place where if there's no staff by the entrance, go wait by the sushi bar to get seated. Although it took a bit for the waiter to come over and he wasn't overly attentive, he was serviceable. A little over half the tables were full so it wasn't that they were swamped. The food wasn't bad; it was just unremarkable. Miso soup was average. The gyoza we got for an appetizer weren't crisp enough and just okay tasting. I got the salmon teriyaki which was okay. The teriyaki wasn't that flavorful, and the fish didn't really stand out otherwise; it was a pretty bland dish. The vegetables on the side were decent though. Nobody else at the table was thrilled with their dishes either, but similarly no one hated the food. I don't think Plum House is a bad restaurant, but it isn't really worth the trip or the money. Perhaps the sushi is better? I probably won't be back to find out; head to Magoya instead. read more

Great selections here! I'm not a seafood lover but found plenty of veggie rolls, appetizers, and entree's that weren't seafood. We started with the pork gyoza (really good) and I went with the chicken curry for my entree. It did not disappoint! Everything tasted fresh and delicious. We were coming in skeptical but we leave very satisfied! We order gyoza appetizer that was cooked perfectly panned fried. My wife ate the meat of the gyoza and went back for a couple more. The fried rice was a little salty but the best in the area. Forget the Chinese restaurants in the Monroe order from Plum house. Finally the rolls my wife ordered custom was perfect. A spicy tuna with avocado plus mango and some sesame seeds. It was perfect! I have the sashimi dinner which thick slices of shamim I and it was a good assortment! I ordered the same thing as my son.( Wouldn't be a problem for a competent wait staff) They brought one meal out. I told them I ordered two. Waited..... nothing?! I finally got the attention of the staff, because they were too busy with other tables and had a lot of take out orders, I wasn't much of a priority, I guess? Told them a second time I ordered two of the same meal and only got one. ( My son had already finished his plate by this time) Waited.... Nothing?! Told them forget it just bring me the check. On the bill I was charged for two orders. Went up to the counter and told them their mistake (more confusion). Went back to my table to wait for corrected check..... waited.... Nothing?! So saying that I ordered in advance the sushi sashimi for one combo. Let's just say I wobbled out the door. As stated in the menu the chef adds a surprise piece. I had spicy fish eggs wrapped with salmon. For a nice drink you need to get the chrysantheum honey water (free refill) I know you say it's water but order it and you will see. I typically don't write reviews but I thought that I should let folks know about the food I bought today (September 10, 2021). I ordered Hong Kong duck and Hibachi steak. I have ordered these in the past and it tasted good. However, today it tasted greasy, salty and the beef was very tough and did not taste Japanese but more American Chinese. The duck did not taste great either. In addition the prices have gone up by about 20%. Perhaps it is a new cook but I will not be eating there anymore. read more
