I want to start by saying I don't eat seafood, but my boyfriend LOVES sushi and sashimi so we go and I get tempura. Every time we've been, the wait staff is absolutely wonderful. Attentive but not obnoxious, and super accommodating. I go back and fourth between the chicken and the vegetable tempura. I actually don't like sweet potatoes normally, but I LOVE the tempura sweet potatoes here. It's always so crunchy but it never tastes heavy and oily. The miso salad dressing is fantastic! The sushi and sashimi that my boyfriend orders is always gorgeous. The fish looks so fresh and rich and the presentation is lovely. He always is more than satisfied and pleased with his meal. Maybe we tend to go at off times but it has always been fairly empty when we go. I'm not complaining, it makes for a nice, intimate experience. But there is plenty of seating - more than enough to accommodate a healthy dinner rush. read more

Husbs: Had sushimi dinner combo and Spicy rolls and I quote "they were ridiculously good!" in some breaded veggies that were amazing. Myself: Not a huge fan of sushi as I am allergic to a lot of fish. I was pleased to see sesame chicken on the menu and was absolutely blown away. Really great. A few points: - I noticed on the way in that there was a sign stating they were rated best sushi in Rochester 2010. - Don't let the outside dissuade you, the interior in immaculate. The dishes new and modern. - The menu was extensive with something for everyone. Omg yes! One of the best sushi's I've had in Rochester. The yummy yummy roll was really good. It was really large and packed with tons of flavor. Not that little dinky stuff, they have at California Rollin. Tiger Claw roll was a little too slimy tasting. The Godzilla roll was pretty good too. Will definitely be back. This is a great place for lunch- got the 2 sushi roll lunch special (you also get miso soup and salad!) for only $9! It's a fantastic deal for what you get. And the sushi rolls were excellent. My friend and I tried the spicy tuna, spicy salmon, Volcano roll, and Miami Beach roll. Loved the flavors and texture! Our waitress was really attentive and quick with our order- lending to the overall great experience. The only things holding me back from a 5 star review are that the soup and salad weren't particularly spectacular and the ambiance is a little too dingy. Great place for rolls!! I've been here many times since starting school at U of R. They used to have an all you can eat deal - but looks like us college hungry college kids put that one out of commission. Either way, their rolls are very reasonably priced and better quality than average. Just stopped by last night and it looks like business is doing well. Plum House is probably one of my favorite sushi spots in the city. The decor has changed quiet a bit over the past 6-7 years or so, but the place has always been comfortable, reliable, and delicious. I've never had a bad experience at Plum, which is probably why I keep coming back for more. I really like the lunch or dinner sushi options. You get a soup, salad, and several rolls of fresh sushi all for a reasonable price. The one I normally like to get is the vegetarian sushi lunch or dinner, and that's about $11, which is a really great deal for 3 rolls of sushi, soup and salad. Very filling ! Of course they have other options besides sushi like a series of appetizers from fresh spring rolls to beef tataki. They also have lots of noodles like beef udon or soba. And of course they have fried ice cream for desert which is just a perfect way to finish a meal! If I get take out, it's always ready by the time I arrive without a doubt. But if I dine in, the service can lack a bit. That would be my only complaint. Other then that Plum House is a great place to check out. read more

Lovely presentation with no follow through. Good rice, but too hot when they formed their sushi pieces, so it warmed up the fish. The fish itself is of mediocre quality. Try the sashimi salad with its chunks of red tuna, white tuna, and salmon, a bright, tangy ginger dressing and slices of avocado. Don't bother with sashimi... the defrosted taste of the fish will be clearly evident and cannot be covered with Kikkoman soy sauce and fake wasabi. read more

My GO-TO Sushi place! We've been to Plum House three times now, and have yet to waddle out either unhappy or still hungry. Tofu Vegetable soup is a meal in itself (and a steal at under $6) I paired it with the Oxford roll...I highly recommend it! Parking can be a bit of a challenge, but it's worth it! read more

I love sushi and I love this sushi place. It's convenient for me to get here, it has fast service, and the staff is always friendly. I've never eaten in at Plum House but I'm always in and out within a matter of seconds. They always have my take out ready on time and they have never made a mistake with my order. I usually come here for their lunch special which is the greatest deal around. You can opt for either their two roll special or three roll special. Both come with a side salad AND a miso soup. I love their Spicy Monroe Roll and Spicy Tuna Roll when it comes to their "regular" rolls. Special rolls that are my favorites include the Miami Beach Roll and the Yummy Yummy Roll. The Miami Beach Roll has spicy salmon, crunchies, avocado and tobiko. The Yummy Yummy Roll is a bit more to handle with tempura shrimp, spicy tuna wrapped and then topped with crunchy crab and tobiko. Regardless of what you choose, I really don't think you can go wrong. You can order through grubhub if you're looking for take-out or delivery. They also sometimes have groupons available for purchase, so make sure you check on that before ordering. read more

What a lovely meal. My partner and I had a splendid sushi meal. The miso was nice plus salad was a refreshing start to our special for two meal. At 39.00 you get miso,salad and a huge plate of sashimi, nigiri and 2 chef's choice rolls. Perfect amount with some sake which was good. I have gone to this sushi place several times and have never had a bad experience. I recommend ordering a spicy crunchy tuna, a yummy yummy roll, Miami roll, and whatever the special is. All of the rolls are super fresh and the presentation is always pretty. They also put together a last Minute catering order for me that fed ten people. They had it ready within the hour, put the sushi in a special design that I requested, and charged my half the amount that wegmans was going to charge me. The interior is pretty nice and has a nice feel to it. The servers I felt were kind of mediocre and half-hearted when they were serving us to our table and our orders. I ordered a cucumber w/ eel roll and the portion size was ok for the price, but the rice itself was super mushy, usually I expect it sort of firm. The sushi wasn't the best in my opinion and pricey for the quality I received. The hibachi I got was chicken and steak combo. The chicken was really dry and had no flavor, but the steak was very well done and had a nice flavor to it with the fried rice. The vegetables were cooked well also. The price for the hibachi was pretty fair. Overall, I would give it a 3 star because I think the service was mediocre and that the sushi wasn't the most appealing choice to eat. However I was content with the hibachi; just slightly disappointed with the chicken. I might not necessarily go to this place again, but if it's for Hibachi, I wouldn't mind at all. read more

You people who are giving this place bad reviews are either REALLY picky or just crazy. I'm a regular here and I've never had a bad experience. The sushi chefs are friendly, as are the servers, and the sushi is the best in Rochester-- YES, better than that Americanized CRAP at California Rollin. I don't know if we're eating the same sushi or what, because the fish has always tasted very fresh and delicious to me. They also put a lot of effort into presentation, which of course isn't the most important part but it makes you appreciate the effort that goes into each dish. I saw one reviewer throw a huge fit about seeing a roach... dude. Bugs live all around us, get over it. I GUARANTEE you there has been at least one in every single restaurant you've ever eaten at. It happens. The waitress apologized, what more did you expect her to do? Kiss your shoes and beg your forgiveness? Get over yourself. Absolutely amazing sushi. The only problem here is the same reoccurring theme with every sushi place out there - not enough sushi for the price. That being said, everything there is hand-crafted and made with top quality so expect to pay a price, but eat great food. I'm a sucker for anything tempura so get a Florida Roll or the Yummy Yummy Roll to start. I haven't been in a while, but glad I stopped back in. They were going through some renovations at the time. Loving the new look. Our waitress was bubbly and very accommodating. I found the maki rolls highly uninspired here. They had the staples and then for the specials, they just changed one or two ingredients in the staples. I also though they over used mayo, crispies, & "special" sauce in a majority of their offerings. The tuna & salmon sushi were pretty bland and I found the tamago too sweet. The miso soup was just bad, not as bad as instant, but not that much better either. They do have an extensive list of non-sushi/sashimi/maki appetizers and Japanese dishes. Maybe their Japanese dishes are better than their sushi but with other options in Rochester, I haven't felt the need to go back and try something else. read more

Great food, great service. STopped in for a quick lunch at the sushi bar with my son. The prices seem a bit steep, but the only other sushi I've eaten in the city is Shema, and I think the prices are similar. I know I can do better at Sakura Garden in Fairport, but maybe everything is cheaper in the suburbs, so I'm not deducting points for price. We both settled on the sushi special, since we both like nigiri and the a la carte prices were steep. The special does not include salad or soup like some places. The sushi chef was extremely friendly and helpful, which made the whole experience a real pleasure. He seems to really enjoy his work. He also served my son's plate in a very cool style: there was a nest of shredded daikon over a tiny blinking blue LED light. It was so cool and sci-fi looking! It made my son (and me) smile. My son and I agreed that the nigiri was fresh and delicious. We enjoyed it thoroughly. I only wish we hadn't been pressed for time so we could have savored it more. We will be back to try some of the rolls, I can't wait! I walked out wondering why the hell I haven't been here for sushi before. It's so convenient when you're headed downtown from the east side.
