This place is small and cozy with not much seating, but I loveee stopping by to get their baked goods! The chocolate croissant is so buttery and delicious, even without heating it up. Good smoked ham & gruyere croissant, though the croissant wasn't very soft or fresh. Granted, no croissant can ever compare to the ones in Montreal, Canada or France! The place is almost hidden away in the Union Market area and is tiny, but there were only a few people, so seating was plentiful all day. My friend and I stayed there the whole evening until closing time, and we were never kicked out or felt pressured to leave. Later came back and tried the Ricotta toast with rhubarb-verbena compote (jam). It was good and tasty. The cold creamy ricotta cheese and sweet jam contrasted with the warm toast well. This was one of the few bakeries in the area open at 8am, and I'm so glad it was because I had one of the best sandwiches of my life here! I'd been considering a pastry, but I've lived in France a few times and so am generally suspicious of pastries in America. Instead, I went with the OG Sammy, and while it seems expensive at $13, it was HUGE and fully worth the price. And delicious! Mine was made with toasted sourdough, which soaked up all that delicious greasiness from the pork belly, comté, and fried egg (which had a gloriously runny yolk). I cannot tell you how wonderfully fatty the sandwich was--it was so flavorful and greasy that I needed a whole pile of napkins for my hands and ended up washing them afterwards because of the lingering pork belly smell. Went here with my girlfriend on Sunday, 06/20/21 around 8:15 am (close to opening time). The service was nice and quick and the aesthetic was simple and nice! We got a cold brew, oat milk latte, the chocolate pistachio croissant and bread pudding! We are suckers for pistachio pastries and this did not disappoint espc bc it had a pistachio filling which we've never had! The bread pudding was good, tasted like banana bread! Coffee wise, the cold brew with the shot of vanilla bean was alright, turned into a iced tea type drink after letting it sit. She wasn't too much of a fan of her coffee ( I'm not a coffeeista so I won't get into that lol). Place was nice and parking was plentiful around the corner near Union Market! I've been eating Bluebird Bakery's croissants for a while. They are top of the line--and I'm a croissant snob, big time. Zeke's Coffee on Rhode Island Avenue NE has been selling them for at least 3 years. I'm a regular at Zeke's (since they opened in 2013). I never get a coffee without a croissant, that's for sure. First time. My job was right in front of the bakery. It was Delicious. It was on the pricey side but that's big city living for ya. I had the pistachio & almond Croissants. To my surprise they were filled with some kind of jelly filling. They were amazing. I'll come back for sure to try more! They have a open kitchen concept as well where you can see the crew make the pastries fresh. The only reason why this isn't a 5 for me is because my "hot" chocolate was mild. And needed more flavor. If you've lived long enough in DC, you've heard of Bluebird Bakery. If you haven't heard of them, chances are you've tasted their pastries at one of the many restaurants and cafes across the city (For example, Peregrine sells their pastries at all their shops). Pluma is Bluebird's first shop of their own. It's in the newly named Union Market District on that ground floor of a new apartment building called the Edison. It's within walking distance from Union Market in one direction and the NoMa Metro Station in the other. It's a bakery first so definitely try a pastry. In the mornings, they serve a variety of baked goods from croissants to tarts. In the afternoon, they add in more savory pastries closing the evenings with pizza and breads. The stand out for me is their warm banana chocolate chip muffin. It's so good! They also make a variety of croissants (including a pistachio one), but if they all are like their almond croissant, it's good, but not the best you'll have in DC. They are also a coffee shop. They can brew any type of coffee you'd find anywhere else and have Stumptown (drip and cold brew) on tap. Throughout the day, they serve juices and then wine and beer in the evening. For coffee, I think their barista is still figuring things out. Both my wife and I and two friends all went at separate times and the coffee game was lacking and it wasn't the coffee. It was how the barista made (or didn't make) the coffee. They've thought of every detail from the long wooden tables to the beautiful tiles from Colombia. With late hours (7AM-9PM during the week), Pluma is one of the few local, quality coffee shops open late. They have free wifi (password: cite4975many35sag) so it's the perfect "work from home" place! read more

If Pluma wasn't such a trek for me, I'd totally come here on the regular. Although probably better for my waistline that I don't! Pluma is super cute, has Wi-Fi, very friendly employees, very cute decor (the floor tiles!!!!) and most of all, the most delicious baked goodies. I had never seen a chocolate pistachio croissant before coming here (if this is the hip new flavor pairing, I am 100% here for it). Absolutely divine. Drinks are delicious as well and they have milk alternatives. I like how things are served in handmade ceramics. If you are coming to work here, as I have, you can sit at the long communal table in the middle or up at the bar stool seating in the front. I had some connectivity issues with Pluma's WiFi but thankfully the Union Market WiFi is strong enough to reach here. read more

Pluma was a 7 minute walk from my hotel on a Saturday morning so I took my chance.. needless to say I did not regret my choice. Quick service, short wait. Chocolate Croissant was delicious. Buttery, flakey and light - what more could a girl ask for. Cappuccino was nice and bitter, with no shortage of frothed milk on top. There was also a nice view from the window bar. Charming little coffee shop and bakery in Union Market. My friend and I went on a Saturday afternoon and had no difficulty getting seats (although it is on the smaller side - it probably seats around 20?). We started off with dirty chai lattes, which were fantastic - rich and flavorful. I loved the morning bun, which was sweet and not too crispy. The lemon ricotta cake was almost like a less rich cheesecake, and my friend absolutely adored it. Overall, this seems like a great spot for a coffee date or morning pick-me-up. I fell in love with the flooring. The lattes were great, but the food not that much... The flatbread/pizza I got was VERY hard and difficult to cut into to share with a friend. I love avocados and tend to try avocado toasts at different places. I admit it was presented beautifully with small flowers on top, but the taste was mediocre. The service is friendly, and it was great to see some ASL speakers behind the counter. When in DC for spring break last March, I discovered this gem. The interior was beautifully decorated from the seating and counter all the way to the restroom. I am all about some fun floors, and these blue floors prompted me to take a photo. The latte I ordered was as tasty as it looks. I love almond croissants and this one had me wanting a second. So I didn't know about Bluebird baked goods were sold to other companies... but thanks to the baker/owner for opening this cafe, I can just come here whenever for a good pastry to devour. But actually, "whenever" is not true. I intentionally came in to have a a cold brew and a good pistachio croissant and they ran out! Must've been real good. So instead I ended up with a pistachio tea cake, which was okay but not what I was craving. So my husband got me an almond croissant instead and while it wasn't the pistachio one, it was still soooooo goood. But I don't want to hype it up. Just try it for yourself. I must return to have the pistachio croissant so maybe I'll just get both next time to compare if it's as good as the first time I had it. Am I a bit pastry crazy? Maybe. Oh well. Oh yeah, what I really meant to say was that I'm really happy this is here because I have been so tired of going to this area with limited cold brew options. Like when Dolcezza is closed and all the Union Market shops either don't have any or don't have the good ones. The only coffee shop at Union Market is Peregrine espresso and they don't do cold brew, just ice coffee which ain't the same. (Not to be a snob sorry). I acknowledge that now there is also blue bottle coffee as another coffee shop option in the area and also Trader Joe's with all their cold brew options in their market... but why go to those places when you can go to Pluma, get cold brew and a bomb dot com pastry. We happened to be in the area and looked for a place to get breakfast. This was an amazing find. I don't know if they have worked out some of the kinks mentioned in previous reviews but we were helped right when we walked in, didn't wait terribly long for our items, and it smelled like a bakery. We got: 2 breakfast sandwiches (delicious, the pork belly was +++) Slice of ricotta torta (perfect) Chocolate + Pistachio croissant (maybe my favorite) Almond croissant Morning Bun Scone The breakfast sandwiches were perfectly filling and delicious. We are already planning on trying to order a while ricotta cake for a special occasion. The croissants were out of this world--the actual croissant was perfectly made and the fillings were clearly made from quality ingredients and they didn't short you on the filling. The "weak link" was the scone and only because everything else was out of this world--it was still good. Wife and coworker went to this establishment. My wife intended on ordering a latte for herself and her coworker. Pluma charges my wife around $9. My wife is confused. She is then presented with 3 lattes. My wife says that she had only ordered two lattes. The person behind the counter said "no you ordered three". Why would she order three when she was only getting coffee for herself and her coworker. I guess what was annoying is the confidence of the employee not even considering for a second that THEY were wrong. Lattes taste different and aren't really uniform. They vary based on who makes them. If you don't normally order lattes it doesn't really matter. read more

The coffee is standard for a place with above average coffee so I won't waste time talking about that. What I do want to tell you about us their baked goods. They are super fresh even if you don't come early in the morning. They constantly replenish their inventory so you can't come at a bad time. One caveat to that is I came at 1:45pm and they ran out of pistachio croissants. But anyway they had pistachio tea cake and that was surprisingly really good. It was dense but soft and very moist. It had a strong pistachio taste that matched well with my autumn spice latte. I also had their almond croissant which I highly recommend. It is perfectly buttery and flakey in the outside but moist with an almond spread in the middle. I highly recommend this place if you are not only a coffee snob but love good pastries. read more
