Some friends and I were staying at the village in the Palisades and we wanted to all grab a nice sit in dinner. For appetizers, we got the wings to share. These were surprisingly a solid 8/10. It was well seasoned and the texture was crispy. I didn't love the dipping sauce too much, it had a pepper like taste which I didn't care for. I thought the wings stood out on its own and didn't need a sauce! Cesar salad with chicken: this was an easy 10/10. The salad was fresh, and I knew the salad was going to be delicious because they served it with anchovies. Delicious! The chicken reminded me of rotisserie style. Good stuff. Duck Breast: 8/10, I'm usually skeptical on trying duck since I'm a Peking duck lover at dim sum style restaurants, but this was pretty good. It was cooked perfectly, had a decent amount of meat to it. Came with a side of mash potatoes. Dessert: we ordered the pear pie with vanilla ice cream. This was gooood. An easy 10/10. The crust on this pie was made to perfection and had the best texture. The flavor, full pear slices, with a bite of vanilla ice cream, I meannnn, I was definitely thinking about it the next day. We had so much fun here! The food was delicious. The ambiance was wonderful and this is a very cool spot. The steak frites and NY strip was delicious but a lil cold when it arrived. Last year we loved Plumpjack and had a very nice dining experience With 7 friends. This year it was a different story. The service is still good here but the food was very inconsistent. The bisque was served cold and it was too spicy. Our companion who loves spicy even said it was way over spiced. We sent it back. The chicken wings were overcooked and dry. The hangar steak and fries should have been called fries and some hangar steak. The pork chop was actually perfect. Absolutely fantastic experience at PlumpJack. We called around 12:30PM to see if we could secure a reservation for that night for 10 people. Ambitious, of course, but to our surprise, they were able to accommodate us. The ambiance was super nice and cozy. Very upscale and elevated, it was perfect for a nice dinner out! The server, Alisa, was super attentive and treated us well during our experience. The food was excellent. A few of us had the steak frites, some ordered pasta and a burger. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious, and the drinks were great. The food and drinks also came out promptly, so we weren't waiting too long. I am staying in the village at the Palisades and was trying to find a good restaurant. I couldn't get a feel of the restaurant by the website. We walked by and looked at the menu and it looked wonderful. After eating here I would say that it probably the best and finest restaurant here. The Caesar salad was excellent and had a white anchovies on it, like a true Caesar should. My husband had the market salad and he said it was excellent. I ordered the Scallops over a lemon risotto and it was delicious and my husband order the duck breast and was extremely happy! We are here for ski vacation and celebrating daughter's birthday. Limited menu (five entrees of which we ordered four) and very expensive. Ordered octopus, kale salad, and lobster bisque for shared appetizers. All very good. Octopus could have been a little less blackened. It was tender and flavorful but the part toward the end was a bit burnt and chewy. Kale in salad was tender and delicious. Good balance of cheese and dates. Bisque was also delicious. Be prepared though, because it is not traditional lobster bisque. It is smooth and zero lobster chunks plus it had an orange/brown hue, perhaps some winter squash that was prevalent in many of the dishes was infused in the bisque. Still it was very flavorful. Our entrees were the wagyu ribeye, rack of lamb, bronzino, and tagliatelle. The ribeye and lamb came out perfectly medium rare, although the lamb was a bit overcharred in spots. The tagliatelle was delicious, perfectly seasoned, not too salty, and great balance of fresh made pasta, kale, and mushrooms. The bronzino was delicious with the scallops and mussels but the risotto, a bit underwhelming (cold and flavorless). Finally the chocolate semifreddo was great ending to the meal. Cleanliness was an issue. Our appetizer plates had crumbs, dust, stains and an eyelash on them. There was plenty of dust sitting on top of the water in the glasses. Hair (or something that looked like that) was also found in the salad. Overall, this was a very expensive meal (~$280 for three apps and four entrees) perhaps because of its affiliation with Plumpjack Winery. read more

Such a charming place in Olympic Valley! The restaurant windows face the lovely garden. The service by Garett was amazing, professional and so friendly. The food was delicious.. so fresh and tasty! We absolutely love the Branzino, perfectly cooked and the board cheeses were delicious. Had an incredible experience here! Definitely recommend making reservations. My partner and I choose to split the pickleback chicken wings and the prime NY steak. Great food and ambience in bar, friendly and attentive service at our bar tables. We had the fresh bread basket, pickle wings and the charcuterie board with local wine soaked salamis. The bar is great for a nice cocktail. It can get quite busy so there will be a wait for a table or if you can snag a seat by the fire or at the bar, that works too. I love the snazzy old man. Very pet friendly so I'm happy to be able to bring my pup with us after a day of skiing. read more

The past two times I've visited I've become increasingly disappointed with the food. In particular the quality of the ingredients has gone noticeably down. The quantity has also gone down. We had the pork, steak, and scallops tonight. The service is good as usual but it has definitely gotten much louder here, you'd have to shout to have conversation. Update: I'm updating this review from 3 to 2 stars because my friend realized that we were overcharged. We were charged $62 for a $12 drink. I also remembered that the menu used to change every day if not every other day, but the menu hasn't changed for months. Stopped by after a long day of skiing for a snack and a drink. The attached restaurant is very fancy and doesn't open for dinner seating til 5:30, so we sat at the bar. We were offered a table with three chairs and a sofa chair. Our waitress brought menus and tell glasses of water. We had a round of cocktails and some appetizers. The NE clam chowder fries were delicious. Definitely not healthy haha. Reminiscent of poutine. The pickle back wings were standard. Nothing to write home about. The seafood poke cones were fun, hard to detect any seafood though. We had another round of drinks and sat for almost two hours. Our waitress was around often to check on us and refill our waters. This is the best example of a 4 star place, the absolute epitome; so much potential that just fell a bit short on the execution. The Cioppino was absolutely fantastic. I only have wonderful things to say here, which is surprising given it's seafood in the middle of Tahoe. This place got the hard things right and missed on some of the low hanging fruit. The ribeye was thin and a bit over cooked- medium rare came out much more medium simply because the steak was super thin. It was still good, the garnishes were delightful. But as the most expensive thing on the menu, and a steak at that I'd expect a little more. The cereal dessert had a similar short coming. The concept is delicious, the cereal treat ice cream was perfect and the sugar garnish was great; however, the rice crispie treat made from fruity pebbles was rock hard. I'm no chef but most of us have made more than a few rice crispie treats and it's not hard to not make them real tough. There was plenty of service staff checking in and the food etc came quickly but they were a bit out of sync. We have gone to Plumpjack for years and always had a great experience. Our last visit, however, was pretty disappointing. The kitchen had run out of duck which is fine but our substitute entrees came out completely cold. The tagliatelle essentially gelatinized into a giant lump that had to be cut with a knife. My fiancée saw that the entrees had started to come out while we were eating appetizers but were quickly rushed back to the kitchen. Honestly, I get it. Holy Bison Burger Batman! I've tried lots of bison burgers, but this one might be the best tasting yet. Before we get into all the juicy details, let me tell you about this chill cafe and bar inside the PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn: ~ First off, I did not ask nor find any info as to how the name PlumpJack was even discovered. There's history behind the name, only I did not ask about it as my time in Squaw was limited. The coolest part is the fact that it's location is right next to all the action facing the village. ~ Second, they've got a large outdoor patio, a fine dining area with white linen, and the bar with a few tables. And from what I've inspected, the place in general appeared fairly clean! We came here during the summertime which was less crowded and pretty relaxing, but I'm sure it can be a madhouse during the winter time. ~ The staff was helpful and attentive from what I've experienced, so no issue there. I only wish I got the names of the two ladies that helped me at the bar. To give them credit, one of them did have an accent (either Aussie or British, I'm not sure) and the other one helped concoct a special espresso drink for me. ~ Now to the food! Do I need to talk about salad? Okay I'll mention that the "Robert H. Cobb Salad (1937)" as being refreshing and filling! Only again, don't ask me how the hell the salad got its name too lol. Just know that it's worth it. ~ OK, onto to THE BISON BURGER! Oh MY GEE, this thing was a monstrosity! The bun was almost Texas-toast sized, but it came out all nice and toasted and buttered up. Mmm mmm! The bison patty itself was not gamey at all. I ordered it medium, and it definitely was lean tasting and clean. Like a good fresh slice of sashimi, that should not have a smell or even taste, yet should be soft to the palate; That's how this meat tasted. Outside of the patty, that's where all the flavor was. The pimento cheese that topped it, oh boy! Check out my pics and you'll see. Overall, this cafe/bar gave more that I expected. We sat next to the fireplace in the lively lounge for a late afternoon lunch post skiing. Their menu changes frequently, but everything we ordered was delicious! This is a review for the bar space. The food can be good. And it was ok the night I was was there with 2 others. But they have been simplifying so much that they have lost some charm. They used to have a separate bar menu. No more. They used to have a really good burger. Again no more. They used to be open every night. Nope again. The hotel is planning to be torn down and I think everything is on a holding pattern. That all said, this may be the last independent restaurant in Squaw valley...and that is worth something. It gives me no pleasure to write this review. For years Plump Jack has been a staple for both locals and visitors to the Valley. Casual, midweek dinners in the cafe, birthdays and big events in the dining room--the food always very good, and the prices high, but not unreasonable. For well over a decade, I have happily recommended it to friends and dined there on a regular basis. What happened? Well, first, it seems, a new chef. A new chef and a new menu. The dishes now offered are either too fussy or too pared down. Cornish Game Hen? Shrimp and Grits? An $80 filet?!! Gone are the stellar burger and satisfying flatbreads. Gone are the great, healthy, seasonal offerings of salmon or lamb. And in their place, diners are left to deliberate between plates of food that offer no comfort, no joy, and no fun. So far, at the new Plump Jack, I have eaten: a lackluster baked ziti more at home at Lanza's (with sausage added for an absurd additional price), a stodgy shrimp and grits where the grits shared the consistency of wallpaper paste (also, why not more cohesion in the menu? This one sticks out like a sore thumb), a paper-dry pork chop, and a market salad full of rotted bits of bag-o-lettuce. Perhaps, if I weren't so turned off by the price of the filet ($80), I might have had a better dining experience. (For reference, the filet at Christy Hill is still sitting at $58 and the filet at Manzanita is only $72, a steal by comparison!). Okay, so Plump Jack has made it clear they're no longer interested in serving local clientele. After all, what fire fighter or teacher in the local school district can afford these prices? It used to be that locals could dine in the bar and leave the higher priced menu items for the dining room. No longer. What's worse, is that, if the food were good, I might not balk at the prices. But the food has decreased in quality and reliability. The truth is, I've given the new Plump Jack enough opportunities to prove to me that the new menu can be a winner and the new prices are justified. At every turn it has failed. We're just going to go to Christy Hill from now on. And, if we want to get gouged for average food, we can always just go to the Ritz at Northstar. RIP old Plump Jack, RIP. We finally ordered and I repeatedly told the waiter that we were fine with the food coming to the table all together. No need to stagger the courses. Well they not only staggered it, we waited well over an hour between our salad course (Cesar salad was mediocre at best) and our pizzas. Other tables came after us, ate their meals and departed before our pizzas came out. The restaurant was officially CLOSED for 20 minutes before they even arrived. I've been to more candle-lit dinners in the last three years than in the first 25 years of my life. I guess that's working life for ya. Overall, the presentation and the way the various elements of dishes worked together on the dish was a bit puzzling to me. We had thin crust pizza apps, and both were great! The flavors on both pizzas (Four mushroom plus pine nuts and kale sausage) really went well together, and both were served piping hot. The crust was chewy and crispy. While the bread portion would have been too thin for a normal pizza, it was just right for a walk around and chat with others pre-sit down 3.5/5. We had duck confit with sauteed onions and arugula as an app. The duck and onions were molded into a cylinder shape, with the arugula spread on the side of the plate. The duck had a slimy texture given its mix with the onion-- without looking at what the item was, I might have assumed it to be turkey. The meat was of good quality, but the duck flavor was lost. The arugula was not dressed in any way. Next was the pear and parsnip soup. This was distinctive, but I could definitely see how this was a risky bet. There's someone at work who is a meat and potatoes sort of person who took a sniff at the soup and joked that parsnips are what poor people at in the middle ages, which was funny yet true. The soup texture was like that of a pureed pear mixed with chowder. It had a slightly vinegary aftertaste, which was distinct and different. I would definitely have this again, but it couldn't be an everyday sort of soup. 3.25/5 on taste, 4/5 on inventiveness. The steak was a bit of a let down. Then again, I've never liked the steak at fancy restaurants-- it's lacking in all the fatty and chewy bits that I enjoy on my meat. While the potato gratin and broccoli the steak were resting on were hot, the meat was cold, though a good medium rare. The potato gratin was fairly normal and the broccoli was not seasoned in any sort of way. Steak was also not seasoned. 3/5 for a fancy spot. The dessert may have been the least coherent. There were three different, unrelated desserts served on a plate. The first, a chocolate mousse in a crispy cone, was next to roasted mini marshmallows and graham cracker crumbs. This definitely had potential, as the marshmallows were slightly roasted and melted. However, I was confused as to why the graham cracker hadn't been incorporated onto the dessert directly. The next, a chocolate truffle with peanut butter filling, was fine as chocolate, but seemed out of place on a dessert plate. The last, a pastry crust square, held small slivers of cut fruit and a dab of lemon filling. This was the most confusing by far since the lemon paste didn't even fill the square-- 2/5 for a nice restaurant. Large triangles of butter had sat on the table, but no bread was served until we asked for it at the very end. Butter and bread were standard. I noticed that they served the women at the table first, then the men. I haven't been to a restaurant where this has happened...ever. Not against it, but just found it different. We tried several items - a few of their signature cocktails - Blood and Snow - their take on a Manhattan with Blood Orange - YUM! And the Tail Spin - their take on an Aviation - floral - and YUM! Since we were here in the off season, the menu was limited but everything was fresh and seasonal. The waitress was great and helped us figure out the best wine choice for our budget.
