The steak that we ordered were okay some of the cuts were tough and also we have ask the waitress to cook our steak in a specific way and told us it was impossible because they only have a grille ‍‍ we just asked to have it cooked in all sides and charred how hard is that?! But anyway The price is ridiculous! The ambiance was okay a little bit too dark for our taste but the view before sunset is for sure nice! The service was okay there was a couple of times where we couldn't see anybody and had to wait for a little while and also when we did ask for a manager to talk to she told us there was no manager... so I don't know what is going on there. My husband and I had dinner here last week for the first time. Our server and service was great. The menu said my husband's ribs were to be smoky and sweet but they were not even close. I ordered the filet mignon. While it was cooked to my specification it was bland with no real flavor. I also prefer my mashed potatoes fluffy and not runny. Food was decent but service was absolutely horrible. Our request for a rare cut of meat was met with condescension and a policy that wasn't mentioned on the menu. Later, we ordered dessert and asked for no whipped cream. The response we received was "I can't do that." We then asked for the whipped cream on the side instead, and we again were given "I can't do that." The explanation was "that's not how we want the dish presented." No apology. Very disappointed. If I can give this restaurant more stars I absolutely will. Went to Tahoe with some friends and we were all in the mood for a nice steakhouse. By far the best one I have ever been to in CA. The place has a cabin feelvery cozy with low lights. Our waiter Trevor was on top of everything we received great service. Our dishes were definitely shareable they serve big portions cannot complain. The drinks were good as well. I would love to live closer so I can frequent this restaurant more. I could almost taste the creamed spinach and the tender juicy seasoned steak. We've been coming to Tahoe / Donner for over 25 years and this restaurant has always been our "go to" place even if nowhere else in the area. Earlier in the day I had completed an open water 1.2 mile swim race and was looking forward to replenishing my body with this much anticipated meal. We were the 2nd table seated after opening; and I noticed that one of the specials touted was a shrimp cocktail and house salad if I ordered a petit filet mignon which I did along with the creamed spinach. We also ordered a nice $85 bottle of wine to go along with our steaks. The server took our order, poured our wine and then disappeared for the next 40 minutes (no shrimp cocktail or house salad ever appeared nor did the server ever once stop by during that time to check in on us). We noticed after this long wait another couple who arrived 10 minutes after us being served their meal. I was just about to go find our server when she arrived with our plates. Imagine our dismay: the food was barely lukewarm - it obviously had been sitting on the "line" (where completed orders are placed by the chefs awaiting staff pick-up) for a long, long time. We told the server that this food was not acceptable as it wasn't even warm - I had taken one nibble of my steak and a forkful of the creamed spinach and as I said it was room temperature at best. She took the plates away, returning several minutes later with the food obviously just heated up. This resulted in a crust on the creamed spinach as well as on the "not so now" "creamy" mashed potatoes and steaks which were severely overcooked (my wife's rib-eye was grey when she had ordered medium). The server said it was the fault of the kitchen staff. We asked how the kitchen staff could be responsible for food sitting on the line unattended by her for what must have been a good 10-15 minutes. All she could keep doing was offering up rebuttals and excuses to whatever questions we asked. For example, I asked about the advertised shrimp cocktail and house salad appetizers; her reply was "well, I can get that for you now." (50 minutes later and after our main courses had already been delivered?) We told her the food was unacceptable and unedible and we were neither going to eat it or pay for it. She gave us a bill for the wine and we got up to leave. She refused to offer any type of apology for the food or the lack of service nor did she offer to remake the meal as we had ordered it. She simply kept repeating "well I've been working here for 30 years" as if that meant she could make no mistakes and that we obviously were the ones with issues. At the front desk I asked to speak with the manager and were told "we have no manager;" however, a gentleman did come up (a host?) and I explained (very calmly and matter of factly without an attitude) about the complete lack of service, the tepid food and the indifference / argumentativeness of the server. He patiently listened and then merely said: "we didn't charge you for the food so everything is OK, right?" No apology, just wanting us to be gone as if we were the problem - not the food or lack of service. As I said at the onset, we've been coming here for over a quarter of a century. It's (uhm it was) our "go to" place. I think my wife and I were more appalled by the complete restaurant staff indifference to our concerns and dining experience than by the quality of the food. read more

Very odd experience. Wife and I are often in Tahoe and wanted to stop by and have drinks and apps. Sunday night, plenty of room at the bar, however the host gentlemen stated "we seat the bar for dinner only". What? I stated again that wife and I were wanting drinks and apps and her restated that it's a dinner seating at the bar, which had several open seats. I decided that, after her first week of radiation treatment, my wife needed a quick jaunt in Kings Beach. I chose this establishment to be our "special dinner." Not fine dining per se, but it is somewhat expensive and only a once in a while type place. But.. . YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!! We shared a crab louie type appetizer, complete with crackers, avocado, and other components. Delicious. My filet was not only cooked perfectly to my preferred temperature, but the mashed potatoes would make Dracula cry...and he's 8,000 miles away in Romania. The creamed spinach tasted freshly made, and was so indulgent. May not have been my healthiest meal of late, but definitely one of the tastiest. Due to radiation treatments and dietary constraints, my wife was limited on what to order. She was able to "only" order a chicken pesto dish....at a steakhouse...where she was surprised at how good a pasta dish was...again....at a steakhouse. Mad props to having a delicious alternative to hunks of meat. Our server was perfect. Interacted when he needed too, very friendly, but let us take our time to enjoy our meal. We had no reservations but lucky to have the last two seats by the bar. The host was polite and our server was friendly and attentive. As a businessman that travels the world, this was the absolute WORST steakhouse I have ever ate at and the experience matched it just as well... The wait staff acted like you were a nuisance. Our table was hardly ever checked on. It was a party of four, all ordered steaks. Two steaks were asked to be left on cold plates (to keep the meat temperature from continuing to cook), all four were delivered on hot plates. Three of the four steaks were improperly cooked. When brought up with the sever, she was extremely argumentative and passive aggressive. Examples include: "I asked for a cold plate" and, "I told them, but we just don't have any." (the remade steak was delivered on an ICE cold plate), "It's probably just the lights, I'm sure they cooked them right", and (I had personally asked for medium-rare) "We'll just cook it rare for you, and you can cut into it and let us know if you want it cooked more." Not to mention, the steaks came with absolutely zero flavor or seasoning... If I didn't know any better, this would be Bill Gates' lab grown fake meat. Not once did a manager come to check on us or apologize. The only thing that was comped was an $8 beer and an unsweetened iced tea... Completely unacceptable! Ribeyes cost $58 (three ordered) and a petite filet cost $48 (one ordered, and the only properly cooked medium-rare). You would be better off driving an hour South to South Lake Tahoe and going to Saltgrass Steakhouse. read more

The lure is the location and view of Lake Tahoe. Visited many times over the years and was very disappointed this time around. Ordered 2 Ribeyes and both were too tough to eat. We told the waitress. she apologized and offered a free dessert. Told us that there was only one other unhappy customer besides us. The first review I posted was removed due to violations within guidelines, which, for me, made zero sense, because I was sharing my honest experience, as I always do. So let's try this again. Ample parking, very low key ambiance, dark, dim, like a tavern. Massive windows with views of the lake for designated reservations only, which we discovered upon entering, per discussion with host, whom wasn't the most polite nor professional when greeting, who then later sat two gentlemen at the reservation seating area, because they told the host they were "Good Tippers." We were directed to the very back of the restaurant, which was segregated from the designated reservation seating area, aligned with two smaller tables, very close to one another, a bit uncomfortable, and even darker than the rest of the restaurant. It was extremely hard to see the lake from the smaller shared window, as we were all aligned horizontally, table to our left had the window towards their the left side of their bodies. It took quite a long time to receive water, have our order taken, with many apologies coming from the waiter, who was actually very cool. He gave us a few recommendations. We ordered the iceberg salad, which comes with half a head of lettuce with condiments surrounding it, as well as drizzled over it. This was tasty, but very messy and hard to cut and separate, especially in such dim lighting. We ordered the crab cake ball to split, the portions are large, so really, all you need is one side dish before the main. This dish was my favorite. Tasty, fresh, loved the avocados, and crackers used to scoop up. This could be a main dish, I'd order for sure. The main entree, salmon and potato puree with broccoli on the side was decent, the mashed potatoes were my favorite. I took a few bites of the fish, too salty. My fiancé said his steak with mushrooms on the side was a bit heavy, he didn't finish, but he enjoyed the overall dish. The creamy cheesecake, had to have been the ultimate favorite here. We shared a slice in our room, asked to go box- extremely delicious. The total was close to 200, in my opinion, not worth the expense, especially after the experience we had with the two hosts and elongated waiting time. We were here visiting Lake Tahoe and came here for dinner for my birthday. Idk why this place only has a 3 1/2 stars. The food is incredibly delicious. I had a New York Strip and my boyfriend had a Filet Mignon. Both came with delicious garlic mashed potatoes. I definitely recommend this restaurant. 10/10. And next time I'm in Lake Tahoe I will definitely come here to eat. We took the leftovers home and had steak and eggs for breakfast and the steak was still and good and juicy. We did get lucky as walk in's but we sat at the bar because that was only available. And we are ok with that because we like to sit at the bar for better service. Ohh and before I forget. Fine example of a Western old-school steak joint. The wife and I come here every time we visit the Tahoe region. We recommend the prime rib every time. In past years we normally got the medium rare. Sassy now prefers medium well to well. I ordered mine medium rare. Tasted great! Huge portion if you get the cowboy cut, but most will be able to be content with the cowgirl cut. We had leftover! 5 stars if it weren't for my steak being closer to medium well, even thought my order was a medium rare. The steak even had the right marker on it so I was perplexed. I decided to eat rather than complain. For this minor glitch I gave 4 stars, although in the past they nailed it every time! The entire wait staff has an attitude like they are the only game in town. My wife and I ordered the surf and turf crab legs with fillet. They charged us $12 to split the dish..... shame on them! We had a wonderful, early bird special dinner on tuesday. The service was fantastic, and the food was a great value, especially for lake tahoe! It's a very traditional style steakhouse which I find refreshing now with all of the warehouse style restaurants that are popular. We had a lovely booth with a nice view of the lake out of the window. We started with martinis and opted for the early bird special of shrimp cocktail, a great salad and a generous cut of prime rib. Went in with a party of four on a Friday night. Showed up about 15 minutes early but was promptly seated. Classic dark steakhouse interior. Fantastic Ceasars salad. Some said best they've ever had. Definitely hand made dressing. Two in the party had the salmon. Again it was reviewed as "best ever" and this was from people who often eat salmon. The prime rib was "good". Slow roasted so impossible to get rare or medium rare. Lastly was the lamp shank. Excellent. Only complaint was the lamp shank was served in a pool of sauce and gnocchi. About halfway through the meal it just became too much. I feel it would have been even better if served on a bed of rice or some type of mashed potatoes so that every bite wouldn't be the same. Do you need your server to lay your napkin in your lap for you and pat you gently on the head to deem an experience worthy of your patronage? My boyfriend and I have been here about 6 times over the past 2 years, and it's our go-to restaurant at Lake Tahoe. Food is excellent, and the portion sizes are huge. The cheesecake is the best I ever had! I have never had bad service here. Anyway, I'm trying to cancel out some of these bad reviews because Old Range should not have a 3.5 star rating. Reservation but they were booked-so instead we thought would go anyway. We lucked out and sat at the Bar and were entertained with the making of cocktail after cocktail. Shout out to TREVOR -who provided great service. We were impressed with how he was anywhere. He was the bartender and seemed to be responsible for everything and everybody. We each ordered the RIBEYE STEAK-$40.00 and shared the GREEK SPINACH artichoke, sun-dried tomato, scallions, feta, olives & vinaigrette dressing-18.00. Our drink choice for the night (highly recommend) -Irish coffees. Note: they do have a unique wine selection. You pick your wine bottle from (the wall of wine) and they pour it right up. Parking is available in a dedicated lot. The building has a resort like a cabin feel. They have booths by the window which have a clear view of the lake. The good food and service always good, stupid house rules. Tonight we went for another great meal/experience while at our place in Tahoe vista. We started with a bottle of fine wine $65, ordered a nice salmon appetizer $26.. wanted to just have a couple of side dishes, mushrooms and cream spinach. Which would have been $121 plus tip for two. That was not acceptable to the restaurant, you must order an entree or you don't get to eat?? Makes no sense to me. We could have had 1 cheaper entree no wine, no appetizer and been fine to have a seat and spent about $36. Plus $8 to share a plate. Plenty of other restaurants that really do appreciate your business without the stupid anti business anti customer house policies. Must work for them! Beware before you go. Just a heads up. My favorite restaurant at the North end of the lake (actually any end but I've been to most of the ones at this end). The food is spectacular ... beef, pork, lamb or fish. No you don't need to limit yourself to just the steak, but the steaks are darn good. The vegetables, potatoes or any of the sides are also superb. The service can vary from great to okay but the food has always been great and that's what matters to me when I'm not cooking at home. To those of you complaining because it's not light or dark enough or because the wait staff didn't give you a toothy smile that was big enough or they didn't place your napkin carefully on your lap, please go somewhere else so I can get a table and enjoy a delicious meal. read more

I don't know if the waitress is having a bad day but today I received poor behavior from our starting waitress. My prime rib was over cooked and I asked if I could have it the temperature of my choice. The waitress was argumentative and asked me to step into the kitchen to look at the steaks color in the kitchen rather than at the dinner table ( strange right). We shared the middle cut Prime Rib and it was so tender and delicious, it came with garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli, and they bring you warm bread with soft whipped butter.
