My husband and I have always enjoyed the hospitality, graciousness and quality of food at Poe's. But delivery can be tricky for all good restaurants. Today we ordered the shaved prime rib with provolone, served with au jus and coleslaw. OMG! The amarosa roll and beef were so delicious tender and the au jus had great flavor, not a salt bomb. I was doing some urban hiking in Richmond and stumbled onto this place at the base of Libby Hill Park. The building is cool looking, almost like a demented fairy tale cottage. They have indoor and outdoor seating, bar seating, and a dining room with a small stage. It is a sports bar type place so if a Washington team is playing or a major sporting event is on, expect a crowd of enthusiastic fans. They do have bands in the dining room from time to time, haven't stayed to see one yet so can't rate the acoustics etc. The burgers and ribs are reputed to be good from the other reviewers. I tried the seafood stew (they called it something fancier but I can't remember what) the night I was there. This is a special so it isn't always on the menu. It was exactly what I needed on a damp, cold night. It had fish, scallops, mussels, peppers, and bread in it. Filling and warming. I also tried the fried calamari as an appetizer. Not greasy and a generous portion. They feature homemade pies for desserts. Sadly they had run out of coconut cream and the chocolate peanut butter pie varieties by the time I got there. They had pumpkin pie but I'm not a pumpkin eater so I will come back another time to try the coconut. I consider them running out a good sign actually, they actually are made in small batches rather than a ton of them being stored in a freezer somewhere. Staff was helpful and attentive. Also super apologetic for running out of some of the aforementioned pies. Parking can be a bit cramped, you may need to park down the street and walk to the pub. Give it a try. Then walk up the hill to Libby Hill Park and take in the view. read more

We have been here twice for lunch on the weekend. Both times we had a great experience. There is a porch with some tables in the front. When you walk in there is a bar area. And off to the side are tables to eat at. We really just stopped in for a quick meal and a drink. This time we had the steamed shrimp. It was nicely spiced with old bay. Had the chili app. It had a bit of a kick and came with chips on the side. There was a special pizza they had with pepperoni and sausage. My daughter wanted pizza and they made us a pizza with just cheese since she doesn't like all the toppings. The way staff was very friendly. Our waitress was helpful and suggested some great things. The bartender was nice in changing the TVs so we could watch our favorite football teams. read more

Yet another little gem in Richmond. This place serves you enough food for two meals, and the fries are hand-cut and seasoned perfectly. I want to come back here when I'm not working so that I can try their beers. There are a lot of fancy restaurants in downtown Richmond, but this place is close enough and good enough to make it worth your while to take a slight detour. Co workers gathered for happy hour and dinner, had a nice local feel and everyone felt welcomed. All thought their food was above average. Good Music playing on the speakers, patio was busy since it was a warm night for February. I hesitate to write this review because I feel it's my undiscovered brunch secret and I enjoy the comfortable atmosphere where I never have to wait to get a seat when I'm starving on a Sunday. Don't let the casual ambience fool you because the food is just as yummy as the famous brunch restaurant that is a block away where you usually have to wait well over an hour. Not at Poes! Poe's Pub is fine. It's definitely a dive, but it has a certain charm that has probably kept it one of Richmond's favorite watering holes the past 30 years. The interior is a bit shoddy (our table section was wet due to a recent roof leak), and there are a few too many Guinness posters for my liking, but the service was good, and the food is surprisingly good for what most would consider a bar first, restaurant second. This time in, I had the meatloaf, which was fantastic. Two decent sized slices served with mushroom pan gravy and a vegetable medley of squash, zucchini, and onions. I also had a taste of the chili and the wings, both of which were good. The chili had a welcome bit of heat, which I feel like so many restaurants are apprehensive about. Bring it on! The wings were also sauced liberally and quite meaty for bar wings. Definitely a good, quiet spot to enjoy a few brews and a good meal. Stop by the next time you are in Shockoe / Libby Hill. Jeff's broiled, blackened catfish will forever be the perfect blackened catfish in my mind's eye. I mean, Edgar Allan Poe's ghost would probably write a poem about it. The catfish was cooked perfectly with a harmonious rub of paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic and whatever else to make the dish smoky and spicy. It was complemented so well by light slaw - I appreciated the freshness that didn't overshadow the delicate fish. We also shared the fried oysters, which was pleasantly delicious (it was both of our first time eating fried oysters). I liked the briny taste against the warm and crispy batter, which wasn't greasy at all. The service was attentive, so I think management took care of the issues other Yelpers raised previously. From the uber friendly bartender and wait staff, to the surprisingly delicious pub grub, I would definitely hit up this place any time I'm in Richmond. It's clear that this is a locals place, but everyone is special here. I ordered (and ate) meatloaf. It's no running joke (well, it is in my family) but I do NOT eat meatloaf and haven't since I was about 8 years old. Don't care if your mama's is the best and I'll change my mind. My mama's was the worst and that's why I don't believe you. But I took a chance today. This meatloaf is sooooo delicious. Winning. The people that work here are RUDE. My and a few friends called around 10pm to ask when they stopped serving food and they replied, 1am. I live across the street from this restaurant so we walked over and we were greeted with a rude "Are you guys even old enough to drink?" I replied "Yes we are and we are not here to drink." The man replied "No you guys aren't, let me see your ID's," I refused to give him my ID and he continued to ask for it. We finally said we called not even 5 minutes ago to see if the kitchen was open and he replied that it was closed. Unprofessional and rude. We have been here several times, and have never been disappointed. It's a quirky little pub in a pretty gentrified neighborhood in Richmond, but it was there before the neighborhood changed, so it has stood the test of time. Tonight, we made an unplanned stop here, on St. Patrick's Day. You would think a little Irish type pub would be pandemonium, but aside from the local Police Pipes and Drums playing a set in the middle of the dining room, the crowd was manageable. We quickly ran into some old friends and were able to have a drink and chat a bit, before finding a table that had opened up. Our server was busy, but attentive, and we already knew what we wanted, so it was not an issue. We ordered the Catfish bites to start, and I don't think they are locally caught, but they are VERY good. They are served with what may be a house sauce that seemed to have honey and ketchup in the recipe, and it went nicely with the bites. My fiancé ordered a BLT and I had the traditional St. Patty's Day fare, Corned Beef and Cabbage. The BLT was LOADED with crispy bacon, and served on a sourdough bread that was toasted, but easy to eat. It came with fries, which were also very good, and probably would have been even better with Vinegar. I am of Irish descent, and have had corned beef and cabbage most of my life, but never at a restaurant. Let me tell you (but not my dearly departed Grandmother), this stuff was the best I've had. It was served in a large bowl with crispy cabbage, nicely boiled potatoes and the most tender pieces of corned beef. This place may appear to just be another dive bar in a hipster town, but it is truly a gem. It's not fancy, and you might get sticky shoes from the bathroom, but you won't leave hungry. Parking is a bit of a task, as it is limited, and you can get blocked in because they double stack, which isn't a problem, because when you need to leave, the owner will loudly announce the make and model of the blocking car, so you can move it.. all in all, this is one of my top five in Richmond. read more

I'm also sorry they are open. I had never eaten here until last night because I've never heard anyone say "man you really have to try Poe's Pub... it's amazing." Last night I had some family in town that called and said that's where they were and wanted me to grab a bite with them so of course I went. The waitress (while cute and meaning no harm) told us to hurry up, rushed us, and made it very clear her priority was watching the LSU game on TV. College pride is one thing, but having a job these days is worth more than the two degrees she said she had. Again, she was very friendly, but not a good waitress. The food took a VERY long time considering we only got sandwiches and fries. Then when it came (without the pickles or BBQ sauce we requested) I figured out why it took so long. My grilled chicken breast was so burnt most of it was inedible. I mean seriously people... how do you screw up a piece of grilled chicken breast? Nearly impossible. Then to make all worse, she finally brought the pickles but one had a hair. Once again our nice but not very good waitress came to the rescue with new ones, but at that point it's really a matter of trust that we have none of. So in summary, the food is awful, the service needs to prioritize, and the building itself is falling apart and dirty. read more

If you've ever driven by Poe's on Sunday morning, you've likely seen the tremendous gathering of motorcyclists out front... turns out, that's because Poe's has a Bikers Brunch Buffet on Sunday mornings... so all the local motorcycle enthusiasts go out, get some cheap greasy diner-quality grub, and size up each other's rides. If you are adverse to testosterone, don't attend. I went out this past Sunday to meet up with some friends, and was dismayed to find that Poe's wasn't serving the buffet anymore! They thought it was getting too cold to ride- they clearly do not know Richmond bikers very well! AND, the buffet used to start at 9am, but yesterday Poe's kitchen wasn't ready until 10am. Once we finally got served (after being there for an hour), the food itself was fine. Greasy, quickly prepared, and nothing I'd go out of my way to eat again, but it was completely sufficient, and reasonably priced. For $9 my husband got a giant plate filled with eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns, and biscuits. For $10 I got a plate with soft scrambled eggs, mushrooms, peppers, and shrimp, on top of puff pastry and drenched with hollandaise. I asked for the hollandaise on the side, but the kitchen didn't accommodate, so unfortunately I only ate about half my meal. Probably better that way... And since we had to wait so long for the kitchen to open, we got free coffee. Wish it was better coffee, but at least it was something. If you like diners, you'll probably love Poe's. It's clearly a seedy bar at night, but they do a decent brunch from what I tasted, and they don't pretend to be something they're not- their menu is simple and filled with the basics- good hangover food. read more
