Poke and Box is not the case, unfortunately. The poke is not fresh, nor near fresh. When you order, they place the poke into a silver mixing bowl and once you choose your sauce, they massage the poke, but like in a tough manner as if it's hard as a rock. You watch this like Uh OH, do I cancel now?? This spot in Ala Moana has young teens working in it, maybe not always so yes, cancel and walk out. Many places you may offend the aunties and uncles but why spend any money for the low quality? Ok, back to the order... this spot, you go down the line, the bowl was for my daughter who was asking for her items and feeding the detail to me, she wanted tako (octopus) and the person told me no, I was unclear as to why and people were waiting. This upset her and she didn't want sauce but ended up choosing shoyu, and she didn't want any toppings which confused the guy and I had to tell him 3x. She did want tobiko...and I asked for that at the end. One icecream size scoop of rice, one scoop of rock hard ahi, very light shoyu, dab of tobiko, $18. I am demoting this from my 5 star review I left 8 years ago. I returned and was disappointed. The poke itself was still pretty good and it's one of the few places that offers tae gu as a side with poke. But the service sucks. Apathetic kids... my small poke bowl (1 poke, 2 sides) with one extra veggie add on was $18. I had asked the worker how much it was to add on another side and he said $1 so then I added on choy sum. Only to find when checking out that it was actually an extra $3 and when I asked him about the discrepancy, he said "oh I guess they changed the price" and shrugged. Then basically tossed my bowl and chopsticks on the counter. Lame. If I knew that, I would've just got the medium bowl which is the same price and I could've gotten two poke servings. I'm really torn about this one because the food is not totally terrible. We used to come here often, but lately I can't even pinpoint what the problem is. We ordered (2) 2-choice boxes. I like the fact that you can do half salad / half rice. I think what I don't like is that everything is crammed into a small box, so I felt like everything was just stacked on each other. The poke was good but not life changing. I did get a mild spicy for the shrimp but my mouth was pretty much on fire and not enjoyable. Service was great. The girls working were helpful and attentive. I wasn't expecting much for a food court restaurant but this is actually one of my favorite poke places. Caveat, I'm a vegetarian so that means I do the tofu poke and can't comment on the fish (sorry!) but I love any poke place that offers a tofu alternative. I ordered the Mauka box which includes the purple potato salad and two sides. I did the spicy sesame sauce (best one), with furikake, and double tamago. Looking to satisfy my poke cravings, I stumbled upon this spot in the Ala Moana food court. The location is pretty cool, and the team here is super friendly--seriously, they've got that aloha spirit down! This is NOT Hawaiian poke, and if you're going in with the right expectation, it's really pretty decent! First of all, after having tried poke at many local spots on island, unpopular opinion here - I prefer the mainland style poke than hawaiian because there's more depth in the flavors with a bunch of ingredients. I like the tempura, the imitation crab salad, the wakame salad and everything in my poke bowl! I do enjoy Hawaiian poke too, but most of the time it's too plain for me. It's either the pure Japanese nigiri / sashimi or mainland poke for me. If I had to mix in some sauces and flavors for the fish, I might as well go all out lol With that said, I believe a lot of low ratings is the unmanaged expectations. For me, it's a nice surprise when I first came here because it's so hard to find mainland poke in Hawaii! I don't normally get ahi because it's too lean and bland. I usually get salmon and tako (octopus, not squid). Their salmon had always been very fatty and fresh with big chunks served, and the tako had always been tender and not sliced too thick. My recommended combo - medium with 2 proteins 3 toppings, spicy shoyu and spicy sesame for sauces, salmon and tako for protein, tempura bits, masago and wakame salad for toppings. That's my usual order. I've tried other toppings like kimchi, choy sum, etc. and they don't taste as good. (Edamame and corn would be OK too.) Not much service to comment about. Pretty much just go up and tell the staff what you want. One lady doesn't seem to speak English well. The younger staff seem more friendly. It's expensive. My bowl cost $18 where it would normally cost $13-15 in mainland. Poke in generally has gotten more expensive. Or I should say everything in general? Went outside of my usual methodology, instead of over analyzing reviews I just picked this from the food court because I was hungry and feeling hot, so I didn't want a hot dish. Plus there's no good poke where I live, so taking advantage of poke while visiting Honolulu. My expectations were low, being at the mall, plus realizing when I walked in that they were closing and I was the last customer. To be fair, I was crossing my fingers I didn't make a bad decision with fish here so late in the day. Boy was I wrong. The meal I got was wonderful! Even the rice wasn't stale, plus the fish portions were quite generous. I ordered a medium bowl because I was hungry and it was a nice big portion. Got 3 sides and different toppings, the kimchi was so good, not really spicy if you like spicy, but flavorful nonetheless. Poke & Box is located right outside of the Makai Market Food Court. The free parking at the mall is much appreciated! The air conditioned environment at the Food Court is a bonus! Service was efficient and polite! We had a choice of a set box or make your own. I decided to get a base of green salad (instead of rice or brown rice), two-choices of poke (salmon and shrimp), and make my own. I selected the shoyu sauce for the shrimps (with tails intact). It was a bit salty, so I added my sides of corn and edamame with each bite. The ogo wasn't flavored with vinegar and had an ocean flavor. The creamy Asian sauce and Furikake helped compliment the salmon poke. Overall, it was a fun experience. Ahi, Ahi & Salmon, Salmon, Tako, Shrimp, Scallop, Chicken, Tofu and Sweet Potato. Then it's your sauce and with 13 to choose from it's all a matter of that cravings and pairing lol!! Well let me say $18.99 for a dish of veggies is beyond ridiculous... especially at a mall - style paid 13 ish last time and food was great last time and felt like splurging at $13.95 just cause on my lunch break yesterday. The lady was super cold no aloha and didn't distinguish that it's wasn't $13.95 like sign said - she never asked what size I wanted . So much to my surprise when I went to pay she said $18.99!!! I said the sign says $13.95 she just gave me attitude & I didn't feel like fighting. The tofu was great however the sweet potatoes were hard not fully cooked. I will never go back again - my prediction they will be out of business eventually unless they goto Waikiki where tourists can afford it. Excellent! You know I love poke! Sure you can get a tapeworm but that is a small risk. The food was amazing. It was a sashimi lover heaven. I ordered the large for about 20$ and I go the ahi tuna, salmon sashimi, octopus slices and some crab meat. This is one of my favorite spots for a poke bowl since they opened at the Ala Moana food court. It's a great place for customizing and creating your very own poke bowl. When you walk in, you are greeted by the very friendly employees. There is one employee who is always so welcoming and even when she is in the back, she comes out to say hi when she sees me. They have three differnt sizes to choose from then you go down the assembly line to choose the different items they have. These are their sizes: 1. SMALL - 1 choice of poke and 2 side (Price - $11.49) 2. MMEDIUM - 2 choices of poke and 3 sides (Price - $15.99) 3. LARGE - 3 choices of poke and 3 sides (Price - $18.99) I usually get the medium size. Over the years pieces have gone up. I remember it being only $11.99 for a medium size but prices for poke have gone up and now it's up to $15.99. After choosing your size, you choose if you want white rice, brown rice, or salad. You can combine two if you choose. With that they add crab salad and a piece of avocado which you can opt out if you don't like it. Depending on your size, they will take out a silver mixing bowl for each protein choice. If you choose to have all the same for your choices, you can do that as well. With your protein choice you can add white onion, green onion, and/or ogo (seaweed). They have ahi, ahi/salmon mix, salmon, scallops, tako (octopus), shrimp, chicken, tofu, and sweet potato to chose from. Then you can choose your sauce which they have 13 different ones to choose from. Some are spicy and some are not. If you choose to mix 2 together, you can do that as well. After your sauce choice they mix it up and place it on your rice or salad and go to the topping section. They have four toppings to choose from (Furikake, Nori, Tempura, and Dried Onion) If you don't want a topping, you can choose an extra side. After your topping is the last section where you choose your sides. They have about 13 different ones to choose from. Sometimes, the sides may vary, but for the most part, they have the same ones from masago (fish eggs), soy beans, kim chee, teagu (my favorite), and many others. (You can refer to my photos) I always order the Medium size all salad add the crab and avo with 2 choices of salmon with only green onions. I then mix the spicy shoyu and spicy ponzu sauces with my salmon. Then to top it off, I opt out of the toppings and choose 2 sides of teagu and 1 choy sum. So yummy! I wasn't able to take a pic of my food on this visit because I totally forgot. The ahi I think is a hit or miss as it can taste previously fozen and not as fresh. I use to get the ahi/salmon mix but now just get the salmon. The portions are pretty good and the medium fills me up with the sides. If you like poke bowls and haven't tried this spot, it is totally worth trying especially since you can customize your own. It is one of my go to spots for poke bowls! read more

When I first read about Poke & Box I thought it was an interesting concept. Having never made my own Poke I didn't understand the actual process or the intricacies of the flavor profiles. Some have mentioned this shop is the Subway or Pieology of poke. Ehh not so sure about that. While everyone was deciding and putting their orders together I looked at the pictures and decided I'd go for the #1 Popular Box. Since the box came with two scoops I asked on just one....why waste? Ready, set, wait for takeout. I don't know what I was expecting but I was disappointed with the results. The Ahi with Spicy Shoyu sauce was yummy the lease bit spicy, absolutely flavorless. The Salmon with mild spicy sauce tasted like it was slathered with Mayo. There was a minuscule amount of the imitation Crab Meat which actually was the best of the three. Avocado??? Paper thin. There was a lot of ChoySum but it was texture less and flat and there was no furikake to flavor the rice. I can see where this place would appeal to some, just not me. I love poke but this did not hit my spot, I'll leave it to those who gave it 5 stars. read more

After being open for a while now, I finally got to stop in to Poke & Box. A design your own poke bowl shop, it's located in Ala Moana Center right outside the food court on the Makai side. You can easily eat here by parking right outside or walking from inside the mall. You choose your side, starch, poke type(s), additions, toppings, and sauces. It was easy enough (think Subway). The fish are already cut, with sauces added by request and tossed by hand. It's certainly nice to be able to see the color and cut of fish before it's covered in sauce. There are so many choose from, feel free to mix and match. Some toppings/sides have an extra choice. They have a limited selection of drinks at the register. When I visited only one person was working and was unfriendly maybe due to being overwhelmed at lunch. The fish was fresh with great texture and flavor. I had the 2 choice box with the salmon + ahi mix, and okinawan sweet potato on top of white rice. I later learned that you could do a mix of a salad and rice blend, and I wish I did that! I kinda "YOLO"d it since everyone else I was shopping/eating with had already picked what food they wanted and I felt under pressure to pick my food quick. Whenever I give a biz three stars, I feel the need to defend myself. So here it is: if you're craving poke and you're already at the food court, go for it! I personally wouldn't 1) travel out of my way to eat here, nor 2) wait in a really long line for it either. Also, if you're reading this Yelp review- you already have a shot at a better experience than me. I didn't do much research before coming here and didn't really know how it all worked. I told the person behind the counter that this was my first time here and just needed a bit more explanation of the operation, they asked "do you want a poke bowl?" to which I said "yes" and that was the end of that. I don't think they were being rude at all, just a communication issue that management may be able to brush up training on. I must also admit that I'm not the biggest fan of customizable poke bowls, I like it the old fashion way with premade recipe mixes. A part of that reason is that your poke bowl price isn't determined on the ingredients that you choose. You can get ahi or you could get tofu, and it'd be the same price- make it make sense. Poke & Box is definitely catering to a different target market that I'm not in- and that's okay. I've seen poke spots all over the mainland like this one and when I lived in Idaho, I frequented a spot like this a lot because that's all I had access to. So, I'm sure that a lot of visitors are more accustomed to this style of poke. You could choose one of their signature boxes for $13.99 each or build you own poke bowl. I chose the medium size which included 2 poke and 3 toppings. I got ahi and tako they were very fresh. They got a good selection of toppings too. Keep in mind furikake is counted as a topping too. When the employee asked me if I wanted furikake I was like sure why not? But if I knew it was a topping I would have picked something else. For the sauce? Spicy shoyu was good and wasabi vinaigrette was meh. All in all this is a decent poke restaurant especially there are not that many options when you are in Ala Moana center. I've always passed by but never decided to eat here. A coworker recommended this place so We decided to have lunch here. I'm so glad I tried it because It's so delicious! Parking can be crazy. Especially during lunch but it's worth it! Recently tried poke & box and was amazed how good the poke is. I love how you can pick different toppings to add to your poke. I really enjoyed the huge selection here! I got the medium poke box which includes your choice of starch or salad, 2 choice poke and 3 choices of toppings. I got the ahi & salmon mix and scallops with Taegu, Masago & ocean salad. I also added crab salad, onions and green onions to my poke. When the wife and I were staying in Seattle for a few months, I had about 5 different poke bowls. At the time, I thought they didn't compare to Hawaii poke bowls. Now, I plain miss them. What I miss most is the fact that you could add a ton of different sides (usually for free) as compared to Hawaii poke bowls which are typically just rice and fish. Long story short, I was really craving a poke bowl in the style of Seattle poke bowls. Yesterday, we tried two different poke shops with no success. And ironically, today, we ran in to this place by chance, while already in the Ala Moana food court. I ended up ordering a medium bowl with double ahi, soy sauce, avocado, ogo, imitation crab, edamame, seaweed salad, tempura flakes, and furikake. Price/portion was about right. Definitely filling. Ahi was pretty damn good with no overly tough pieces. All the add-ons were also amazing. Nothing like the crunchy texture of the ogo, the creaminess of the imitation crab, and the ahi, all in one bite. My only negative feedback pertains to the limitations on the add-ons. They divide the add-ons into separate sections (seemingly one section featuring more expensive add-ons than the other section) and limit the number of choices you can make. Moreover, they were a bit stingy on the portion of imitation crab. Nevertheless, I'd definitely eat here again. read more

After shopping at Ross, we headed over to Poke & Box. I never been to this place before. But I heard Poke & Box serves pretty good food. So glad we came here. I like how Poke & Box separates the food in different stations. The first station provides a choice or rice or salad. The the staff builds the box with the various types of poke. The array of food looks fresh and the aroma smelt delicious. I ordered the Mauka box. It comes with a choice of tossed salad, or rice, tofu, avocado, choice of imitation crab. Customers can choose the ogo seaweed for the Mauka box. To prepare the tofu, the staff offers the shoyu, creamy sesame, mild, spicy and other sauces. At the next station, we can choose up to two. The station offers edamame, kimchi, ginger and other side salads. I chose the seaweed salad and cold choy sum. The food tastes fresh and crispy - very fresh. Many locals come here for lunch and dinner. The dining section will be located outside of Poke and Box. Come and order take out from here. read more

Shopping in Ala Moana or just craving poke in town, then try Poke & Box. With all my favs disappearing, Aloha Cones moved to Kalihi, Pokeway is only in downtown, and Tasty Poke has closed up shop, Poke & Box is the remaining favorite. Located on the bottom floor, Makai side next to Cheesburger Factory. Place is only take-out for being attached to the Makai Food Court, so you could either eat in or take home. Whether you walk in from the sidewalk door or the foodcourt opening, the line starts on the farthest left of the shop. You first gotta pick a size, small, medium or large? Then pick what base you want, all rice, all salad, half and half? Next, pick your poke and how many types you want, 1, 2 or 3? Then you gotta pick a sauce... that I can't really help you with, but my fav is the creamy sesame... probably not the healthiest choice, but oh soo gud with any poke! Lastly, are the side dishes... this place packs the sides like that's all had was sides in the box. I'm a fan of greens and crab salad, but you can decide for yourself. Haven't really asked if you could sample the sides, but that will be my purpose on my next visit. Service here is great! Very welcoming to every guest that enters, and willing to answer any questions that they are asked. Most importantly, they are consistent with every customer. The line here can get long, and they don't rush you off to go help the next person, they just do their job completely before moving on to the next person. That's really great customer service to me. Our first Hawaiian Poke stop!! Poke & Box had really fresh seafood and options for their Poke. Our orders were crammed full of stuff & kept us full for the rest of the day. We both got larges that gave us 3 poke options & 3 toppings. However, they do give you 5 base option ingredients that you can choose all of. Would give this place a try if you're interested in good food at the Ala Moana Center. It's nice to just grab it & eat at the food court along with some coffee. My only nitpick would be for them to allow more toppings, although I'm unsure if unlimited toppings is just a California poke thing. read more

I'm actually really impressed. Poke and Box is like those mainland poke places that let you design your own poke bowls. You choose a protein, some toppings and a sauce, and they mix it all together for you. You can get your poke creation atop a salad or rice. Judging from what I have experienced on the mainland, I was not expecting Poke & Box to be good. First, the fish quality was really good! The ahi tasted fresh.... it was actually pretty perfect. I was surprised haha. Second, I like the small, medium and large options. I got a small and it was perfect for dinner. I'm glad I didn't get a medium. The small comes with one scoop of rice. The medium comes in a larger container with 2 scoops of rice. Third, the toppings! They give you an avocado slice and small scoop of crab salad right off the bat. After you choose from ahi, salmon, scallops and tako, you can add onion, green onion and cucumber. Then you choose a sauce. The sauces all looked pretty good and they let you taste them. I got the spicy sesame. Then you can choose from nori, fruikake, tempura chips or onion chips. THEN you can choose another "side". There is a whole lot of things to choose from. You can get tomatoes, sprouts, takuan, masago... there were soooo many. It's a bit pricey. $10 for a poke bowl... but it's worth it. I'd come here over ono's or fresh ahi off the boat. Service was fast and friendly and parking is pretty plentiful. It's located in the makai side of the food court, right by the entrance. I'll definitely be back. I really regret boycotting this place because I hate mainland poke places SO MUCH and I just assumed this place would be like them. Ugh. My bad. read more
