With all my favs disappearing, Aloha Cones moved to Kalihi, Pokeway is only in downtown, and Tasty Poke has closed up shop, Poke & Box is the remaining favorite. Located on the bottom floor, Makai side next to Cheesburger Factory. Place is only take-out for being attached to the Makai Food Court, so you could either eat in or take home. Whether you walk in from the sidewalk door or the foodcourt opening, the line starts on the farthest left of the shop. You first gotta pick a size, small, medium or large? Then pick what base you want, all rice, all salad, half and half? Next, pick your poke and how many types you want, 1, 2 or 3? Then you gotta pick a sauce... that I can't really help you with, but my fav is the creamy sesame... probably not the healthiest choice, but oh soo gud with any poke! Lastly, are the side dishes... this place packs the sides like that's all had was sides in the box. I'm a fan of greens and crab salad, but you can decide for yourself. Haven't really asked if you could sample the sides, but that will be my purpose on my next visit. Service here is great! Very welcoming to every guest that enters, and willing to answer any questions that they are asked. Most importantly, they are consistent with every customer. The line here can get long, and they don't rush you off to go help the next person, they just do their job completely before moving on to the next person. That's really great customer service to me. Our first Hawaiian Poke stop!! Poke & Box had really fresh seafood and options for their Poke. Our orders were crammed full of stuff & kept us full for the rest of the day. We both got larges that gave us 3 poke options & 3 toppings. However, they do give you 5 base option ingredients that you can choose all of. Would give this place a try if you're interested in good food at the Ala Moana Center. It's nice to just grab it & eat at the food court along with some coffee. My only nitpick would be for them to allow more toppings, although I'm unsure if unlimited toppings is just a California poke thing. read more

I'm actually really impressed. Poke and Box is like those mainland poke places that let you design your own poke bowls. You choose a protein, some toppings and a sauce, and they mix it all together for you. You can get your poke creation atop a salad or rice. Judging from what I have experienced on the mainland, I was not expecting Poke & Box to be good. First, the fish quality was really good! The ahi tasted fresh.... it was actually pretty perfect. I was surprised haha. Second, I like the small, medium and large options. I got a small and it was perfect for dinner. I'm glad I didn't get a medium. The small comes with one scoop of rice. The medium comes in a larger container with 2 scoops of rice. Third, the toppings! They give you an avocado slice and small scoop of crab salad right off the bat. After you choose from ahi, salmon, scallops and tako, you can add onion, green onion and cucumber. Then you choose a sauce. The sauces all looked pretty good and they let you taste them. I got the spicy sesame. Then you can choose from nori, fruikake, tempura chips or onion chips. THEN you can choose another "side". There is a whole lot of things to choose from. You can get tomatoes, sprouts, takuan, masago... there were soooo many. It's a bit pricey. $10 for a poke bowl... but it's worth it. I'd come here over ono's or fresh ahi off the boat. Moving on I order. And when we get to the toppings I only like crab and Avocado, I asked to just get double of one to make it the total of 3. The employee said no that's not allowed. I found this annoying because they only give you one literal slice of avocado. But moved on. When you get to the dry seasonings you only get to PICK ONE from seasame seeds, seaweed, crispy onions. It's located on the makai (beach) side of Ala Moana's food court close to Aja bento. It's a little on the pricey side for the portion side. You get a choice of white/brown rice or salad. One choice of poke is $10.99 with 2 toppings and 2 choices are $13.99 with 3 toppings. My fave option is the ahi:). They have salmon and also Okinawan sweet potato. They have a bunch of various sauces ranging from spicy shoyu to the firebomb. They have around 14 sauces with various spice levels to tickle every taste bud. They also give you free imitation crab meat and avocado. I knocked off one star for price and the fact that furikake and fried onions count as a topping whereas Choy sum and kimchee are also a topping? I have to admit when I saw this place, it did NOT appeal to me at all. I'm more of a traditional girl who likes her poke bowls with just fish and rice; having a bunch of sides and toppings felt like it was too much. I was never planning to try it out until my good friend told me how much she loved it and that it was in her top 3 of poke places.... Ok now I gotta try and see this for myself. Pretty simple concept: choose your size, your protein, your sauce, your toppings, your sides and you're good to go. They definitely pack a lot in your box that it can easily be split into 2 meals. I decided to try the Spicy Shoyu Ahi and Mild Spicy Salmon. Much to my surprise, the fish was very fresh! Big soft chunks marinated in the sauces. I'd say the quality is almost or probably just as good as Ono's quality. The Spicy Shoyu sauce had a small kick to it but was very tolerable. I walked around the food court at Ala Moana and was drawn to Poke & Box since I wanted something that wasn't typical mall food. Choices are limited and presentation is slacking. I opted for the small with one protein and two toppings. I chose ahi over rice. The last station was to top it off with tempura flakes, furikake, nori seaweed, or sesame. I wanted nori and furikake but was was told I could only choose one. I've never been limited on these types of ingredients before. Of course protein is limited depending on the size and sometimes toppings are, although most of the time its unlimited toppings (at least on the mainland). I was just a bit surprised they would limit on something inexpensive like sesame and tempura flakes. Food was just okay and a bit disappointing. I've had better poke back in California. read more

The only reason why I'm giving this 4/5 stars is because you can't put as much as you want in the box. I love the thought and idea of this but they should let us put as much as we want. I am a fan of choices, but remember, all of the ingredients you choose may not match well with the underlying flavor profile of your final product. Just because you enjoy certain ingredients doesnt mean you will like them mixed with your raw fish. Plus, some of the add-ins and toppings are already seasoned, which makes it tough because these ingredients already have a flavor of their own. Dont get me started on the sauces. They do have enough to choose from...but how do you know if you like them when it goes on top of the other ingredients you picked out? Finally, the biggest factor of all....the employees. Everyone is different and everyone serves food differently. So even if you have perfected your ingredients, you still dont know how much quantity of those ingredients you will receive. This really is evident when it comes to the sauce. A really stingy pour or an extremely heavy pour can ruin the perfect ingredients every time. Ever had Foodland poke? Taniokas? Poke stop? Professionals mix the ingredients so that their poke tastes the way they feel it tastes best. You can try it, and if you like it, you buy it. If you dont, you can try the next one. I'm going to use Foodland's poke as a standard for comparisson. Poke & Box is clean, and looks pretty high end. The portion of a Popular Pox is pretty good for one person. My daughter and I wanted share but ended up in a fight! ;) Which is a good sign that both poke options were delish. When you order you can see your poke being made from scratch, so it feels super fresh. I loved the temperature. Fish was super cold over a warm bed of rice. They do not cut off the non-orange parts so you get the gray edges between the skin and flesh. Sometimes it doesn't affect taste, but often it messes with the taste and texture. Then you can choose certain number of toppings. What it says on the overhead menu is hard to understand. What it says right on the counter is a lil better. I just let the person building my box tell me how many and what I could choose from... Hoping I would get everything I wanted. There are a lot of options at the last stop. I noticed Poke & Box in the corner of the food court (located close to the parking lot) we walked in, cute little shop.. there were a few people in front of us. While waiting for our turn i decided to read the menu so i knew exactly what i wanted. It was our turn, i ordered the 1 choice box. I didn't really know how to start ordering and the lady didn't really explain it to me. But i got the white onions and green onions. To my understanding you choose a topping for your fish first, they put it in a metal bowl then you move down to what type of fish choices you would like. After making a decision on what fish you want, you move down to the sauce section. Once your sauce is chosen, she will mix it for you right there (in front of you with gloves). Next you move on to the toppings and then other choices of veggies, Taegu and other options. When we went to the register i had a few questions for the girl, she was really helpful. We wasn't to sure when we added the toppings if we were paying for extra or not. She explained that a one topping box can get you one topping. I'm still a little confused about it, but whatever. (We didn't pay extra for anything) A suggestion would be, the first person helping you explain it first, or have signs that explain to you. Basically if you don't get your toppings, your missing out because your paying the same price with toppings or not. Overall, the taste of everything was beyond amazing!!! Instead of poke bowls, it's poke in a box. You can customize it to how you want. It comes in three sizes. The small comes with one choice of poke ($7.99), the medium comes with two choices of poke ($9.99), and the large comes with three choices of poke ($14.99). New poke shop just opened in the Makai food court at Ala Moana Shopping Center. It's located at the top of the food court near the entrances. This is exactly what the food court needed. A fast but healthy place where you can get in and out within minutes. Love that they have brown rice. When ordering , decide how many pokes you want. Then they take you through the process of building your poke box. First you select white, brown rice or salad. We got half brown rice and half salad. Second you select the base for your poke with choices of onion, green onion , cucumber or all three. We selected all three. Third you select the type of poke, Ahi, Salmon, Tako (octopus), shrimp, scallop, tofu, chicken. Fourth you select a sauce for each type of poke (see photo of menu). Fifth, you select a side, kim chee, edamame, choy sum and a few others. (See photo) Sixth you select a topping, fried onion, fried garlic, furikake, and a few more choices ( see photo). We got the three poke choice $15) Ahi in spicy shoyu sauce, salmon with a wasabi ginger sauce and tako with a cream sesame sauce. All three were superb. Really fresh and we were really impressed with the sauces. They were distinct in their flavors and well balanced. Not too sweet or salty. You can choose the level of spiciness with the spicy shoyu. I was in the Ala Moana Shopping Center for work, it was lunchtime, and I needed pressure-fried chicken desperately. It was one of those kinds of days. It was also raining so I walked from the Macy's side of the mall to Jollibee on the street level, oceanside. Before I reached my pressure-fried chicken dealer I saw a new food place called Poke & Box. Okay, so I wanted pressure-fried chicken ... what I really need is to eat healthier so I decided to Poke & Box a try. I'm glad I did. The best way I can think to describe it is Subway for poke bowls. You pick your size, your base, your mix, your sauce, and your toppings. They assemble it all for you. You pay and you go, just like Subway. The small size, which is what I got, was $7.99 and it was enough that I wasn't hungry anymore but I also wasn't stuffed. It was a nice size for a light lunch. They have a wonderful variety of ingredients to choose from. I picked the shrimp and the small portion came with 8 shrimp. I got brown rice for my base and the spicy shoyu for my sauce (a little heat but it's not that spicy). I also added tempura flakes and edamame. The shrimp was nicely cooked, the brown rice, edamame, and tempura flakes gave it a really good texture. And best of all, it was healthier than pressure-fried chicken. I would definitely go again and take my FPO. I think we could eat here for a few years and not duplicate all of the ingredients in a bowl exactly. read more

The lady that owns the place is super sweet and the poke is consistently good. There hasn't been a time I grabbed a poke bowl from them where I was disappointed.
