Starting off, my best friend and I were in Modesto for Barnes and Noble to get some books for my son. This location being right next to the bookstore was convenient so we went inside. The young girl who served us looked disgusted the moment my best friend said she'd never eaten there and wasn't sure how to order. She looked at her like she was stupid and just said what do you want and was not helpful whatsoever. She got the small poke bowl and I got a small donburi bowl. After what took over 5 minutes for her getting our two bowls from us, she walked away after I paid and I had to ask another worker for a lid to my bowl. Whatever, service sucked, maybe she was having a bad day? We sat down to eat (still hadn't gotten the chicken tempura and gyoza I had ordered for my son). Before my son's food even was ready I had bitten into a very bad piece of shrimp tempura that tasted as if the inside of the batter was covered in mold. I immediately spit it back out into a napkin and just sat there about to throw up. I sat there thinking this is probably just a mistake and maybe I imagined it. Then my son showed me his chicken that he said he didn't want to eat. It was old, rubbery, did not resemble chicken at all, and had black stuff around the chicken under the batter. I went to the worker who was at the counter and told her what we had received. She didn't seem surprised at all, but more surprised I wanted a refund for the two items that were spoiled. No manager onsite, apparently they usually aren't there. She called the manager who did not answer the phone but proceeded to text the worker. Asking exactly what happened several times and then proceeded to say the black on the chicken is seasoning before it's fried, which is not true because the come pre battered and it was just old. I had accepted no refund on the chicken for the ridiculous excuse, but I wanted a refund on the donburi bowl at the very least. The manager asked her to open my napkin and send a pic of the shrimp!!!! THAT IS SO NASTY! That young girl does not get paid enough to be doing all of that. That is revolting! I ended up opening it for her so she didn't have to so she could and a pic. Then the manager stopped responding to her by text. That's fine, Manager, that's fine. You should've just given me a refund for your nasty ass food that was not edible. Now you'll be receiving a visit from the county health department as they were called the moment I left your restaurant because of the food being kept at room temperature, your dirty facility, and the spoiled food you're serving to paying customer. This idiot sent me into my Karen era and I do not even care. Don't mess with people's food. Good luck. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place and have been here several times as a walk-in customer through the years. The place is always clean, customer service is good most times. Overall, sometimes it's good and sometimes it's just ok. I went in a few weeks ago, 30 minutes before their posted closing time, but was told that they were closing and to come back tomorrow. Fair enough as there were no customers dining in, but disappointing, since the workers were leaning against the counter, phones in their hands, and seemed to be engaged in conversation. We've came here often and they give us great portions but today amongst a few other times, our large bowl is extremely under portioned. The medium bowl is heavier than the large bowl, and is actually filled. Not very fair or worth it for the large being $17. Photos show comparison of medium and large bowl. Clearly uneven. The service was great, and the place was clean. However, the food was just okay. I ordered a medium bowl, which includes three scoops of protein. I chose two scoops of regular salmon and one scoop of spicy tuna. Unfortunately, I didn't like the spicy tuna at all. It had a really off taste, and I couldn't tell if it was spoiled, but I found it unpleasant. I ended up eating only half of my bowl, as the spicy tuna was only on that portion. I'm not wasteful when it comes to food, but I wasted half of my bowl because it was that bad, sorry to say. For toppings, I selected imitation crab, edamame, and house sauce, which was tasty. It was garnished with furikake, ginger, toasted sesame seeds, masago, and spicy mayo, all of which were delicious. Oh man... if I could give this restaurant 0 stars I would. I have worked in the food industry for 10 years and as a bartender. This is the lowest of low. To start when I walked into the establishment the tables were dirty and disgusting and the floors had food all over them. That was first impression, but because my friend and I were on a time cramp I understand sometimes establishments get busy and aren't exactly up to par. Walking up to the counter immediate glance, didn't look clean or appetizing but again.. we were on a time cramp and figured we would give it a try. We were greeted with no "welcome" "hi" or anything... there was one girl standing there looking miserable. Her first words were "what do you want". Excuse me, miss, ma'am... have you never talked to another human being before? Okay fine... maybe she was having a bad day.. that happens. So I proceeded to say "hello, I've never been here before. I'm sorry if it takes me a moment". She did not explain the menu, offer to help, or even lift a finger... instead looked extremely irritated at me for being there and stared at me as if I was stupid. Cool babe. So I tried to figure out the menu, as I'm not familiar with much of the sushi or fish names. I finally ordered and as my best friend was ordering she too was asking questions and the girl working behind the counter looked extremely irritated when my friend ordered wrong. The worker then grabbed a new bowl for my friend and slammed it down! Anger issues? Who hurt you? But again.. maybe management is awful and treats her awful? So once again... I gave grace. We ordered and sat down on the dirty tables and our food was brought out to us. As soon as I took a bite, the fish was room temperature... I know for a fact that is a big no no! It literally tasted mushy and somewhat warm. Absolutely disgusting. I immediately gagged and could not eat it. I didn't complain... I kept quiet. My best friend then bit into her shrimp tempura... immediately spit it out an we looked at it and it was moldy. Talk about disgusted. Her son's chicken tempura... even more revolting. He bit into it and he started repeating "mom something is wrong with this!" Immediately we told him to put it down. We cracked into every piece of chicken... each piece was a grey color and had black on the outside. The texture was not right... working in the food industry for many many years, this was VERY old chicken. It was rubbery, dry, and grey colored with black on the outside of the chicken underneath the batter. My friend took her food up to the front. We were informed the manager wasn't there and it is a regular occurrence. The new worked that came out to help us was very friendly and tried to help as she called her manager. They wouldn't answer her phone call but they did text her back and were not helpful at all. My friend wasn't even asking for her full refund back but the manger then asked the young girl to reach into my friend napkin to take pictures and send to them. To even ask your young employee to reach into someone's nasty napkin THAT SHE SPIT THE NASTY FOOD BACK INTO is disgusting. Again... worked in the food industry for many many years... that's a CERTAIN no! That is unsanitary. So my friend told her "absolutely not, you will not touch that, you do not get paid enough for that", so my friend offered to open her napkin for the poor girl so she could take a picture. They refused to even refund my friend even a small fraction and didn't seem concerned at all with the fact that all of this was happening and they were serving spoiled food. I am disgusted and I am writing this because I have never been so disgusted. All of this was not ok. I was nice enough to try to write everything off because things happen but this is not okay and A LOT of it were health violations! The refrigeration has to be a certain temperature where they keep the fish. You cannot serve old nasty chicken like that and I would NEVER SERVE THAT TO A CUSTOMER. MOLD ON FOOD IS NOT OKAY! I am not a Karen.. I am extremely understanding but this had to be reported. Please please be aware of the temperature of your fish/ sushi... look at your food and check it before you eat it. None of this could have been avoided or fixed... this is not okay. It is something that definitely needs to be brought to everyone's attention and worked on! read more

We decided to come all the way to Modesto to give this place a try. The size of the poke bowl Is what made me give this place 4 stars. But overall I would have rated this location a solid 3 stars. For the price point of a large poke bowl ($15.50) it comes with your choice of bottom but we decided to choose sushi rice with 5 scoops of protein. We ordered 3 large poke bowls with a drink. The fish was fresh and they had multiple protein options. The crab is a topping instead of a protein and you can get an extra scoop for an extra $1.00. My main complaint on this location is that I really wish they would mix your raw proteins in a bowl with your sauces. I really didn't like that some of my fish had no flavor from the sauce. We've been to numerous poke locations that have a bowl to mix your proteins with your mix ins like onion, and cumbers with sauce then they poor it over your bowl. Since it isn't done that way it was a bit bland when just getting the plain fish. It has room for improvement. The location seems a bit older. You can tell this location needs a good cleaning from the inside and outside windows as well. A good face lift would give this location more of a curve appeal. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I came in at a not-too-busy time for a late lunch and nobody was there. Walking in, it was kind of lukewarm, and I was hit by a... smell. It wasn't a bad or a good smell, but it wasn't something I was expecting. Also took a few minutes for someone to walk out and help me. I ended up getting a large salad. The salmon, yellowtail, and spicy scallop were all tasty; I don't see scallop that often in poke places so I was super down. The octopus was alright, it tasted slightly fishy but wasn't too tough. The spicy tuna I couldn't even eat; it was fisher, softer, and more metallic than canned tuna. I also found several lettuce butts in the salad, which just means it was dirty overall. The price is a lot cheaper for the amount you get, and it's pretty massive, so if you want a large, come hungry! Seriously best the Poke in Modesto/Salida/Ceres/Turlock. Everything is fresh. They are quick to make your bowl. You can ask them to mix up protein with sauce like pre-covid time. The only downside is if you eat there, the music is beyond different. Pricing seems right for the amount of food you get. Ok lunch for the price. The downsides are #1 the smell when you enter is not pleasant. They do have many tempura and fried menu options but the restaurant smells of old grease and is poorly ventilated. #2 the girls who were working in there had ZERO customer service skills! They weren't greeting anyone who came in and were not explaining the menu or how it works based upon your options She would just point up at the options on the menu board and say option 1 or 2 and so on which caused confusion and she forgot to add ingredients as if rushed and lastly the place needs a good cleaning. The windows, door and baseboards dirty. The restaurant was just lacking all attention to detail. I most likely won't return. read more
