Usually love this place and me and my boyfriend come here all the time. The main guy that always helps us is always sweet but they hired this young lady that seems to always have an attitude. Not sure if it myself but she is constantly rolling her eyes when I order or if someone else is coming in. This has been the last 3 times I come here. Poke Don has pretty fresh fish. Poke in itself is always better when it's freshly put together and mixed. Even Hawaiian people will tell you this. So, it's nice that Poke Don has a line-style ordering system, a la Chipotle style. Process: You choose your base (white/brown rice, some spicy tuna/crab, etc.), your proteins (e.g. tuna, salmon, scallops, etc.), your "vegetable" toppings (e.g. carrots, red onion, corn, etc.), and then a myriad of toppings (e.g. lots of pickled cucumbers, seaweed salad, edamame/soy beans, and more), sauce (choices from: ponzu, soy sauce, wasabi, spicy sauce, etc.). There are also options for baking it, if you don't like raw fish (but I suggest trying it, if you never have!) I've been here several times, and always appreciated their food. My go-to is usually a white rice with spicy crab, double salmon, japanese scallop, red onion, cucumber, and all the fixings. Occasionally, I'll add a fourth or go brown rice (to make myself feel healthier kinda). My main gripe is the menu system (somewhat nickel-and-diming you on +$1.00, +$2.00 here and there, if you add options), plus food prices have skyrocketed a bit ($18-20 for a large bowl with 4 proteins). That might shock Hawaiians as that's way above the norm if in Hawaii. I'd counter that by saying you have to account for inflation these days, and that Hawaii probably has more abundance of fresh fish. I'm only guessing that the additive prices are for less frequently purchased fish types (e.g. japanese scallop.. though hamachi seems pretty "regular" IMHO). My other gripe is that recently, hours are a little iffy. The Yelp time posted 11AM start. I went there around 11:10AM on a Saturday, only to see a sign that said "Temporary Hours 11:30AM --" .. it wasn't clear how temporary that would be. But it was worth the wait, so I waited until 11:30... and then 11:38AM before we got let in (read: late, as a line started forming outside). While some say the service is very family oriented, I found the server pretty gruff. He waved off even friendly discussion with more frequent comers... it may have just been a bad day though, OR that he was trying to get through the growing lunch line faster. Frankly, he was a one-man army that day, it seems, so kudos to him on punching through the line fast.. Overall, I look past these things but post them here as the reality of where we are with (faster style) food in 2023. Food service is in a tougher state today, and we all want to be served well, when we eat out. Was here a few days ago. It's a nice spot in San Ramon for customizable poké bowls. I had their salmon and scallop poké bowl with rice. I had an abundance of ingredients in my bowl: crab mix, seaweed salad, pickled ginger, furikake, fried onions, edamame, onions, pickled cucumbers, and corn. The rice was cooked nice. [ During Covid Review ] This is one of the good places to get poke in my opinion. Located in a plaza, there is plenty of parking which is great and easy to find because the sign is pretty big and also there is a long line. I like that on the ground they have markers that tell you where to stand to keep the 6 ft distance. These markers could be found outside and also inside the place. While it is easy to see on the ground, there are some people who just come into the facility and ignore the 6 ft distance. When you order, you can order a small (2 scoops of proteins), medium (3 scoops protein) or a large (4 scoops of protein). You can either do brown rice, sushi rice, romaine lettuce, spring mix or just have a combo of those options. They do offer a variety of protein compared to other locations which is nice. They also have a good amount of options for sides such as edamame, carrots, ginger, green onions, mango ($1.00 extra), etc. I will say this, the amount of avocado they give you, is just not worth the $2.00. They increased the price of avocado from $1.00 to $2.00. One thing I really liked about this place was that they were pretty generous for the scoops of protein compared to other poke places. The downfall of this location is the line and the amount of time it took to finally order and get my meal. I ended up having to wait about 30-40 minutes just to order. I think this is because they only have 2 people working and the way they have their flow is one person takes care of most of the order and the other finishes the rest of the 15% of the order and checks them out. While we were ordering, the man who was serving us stopped asking us questions and suddenly took his apron down without telling us he was on his break. So suddenly, there was only 1 person working and I felt bad for the long line waiting behind me. They cheap out by packing the bowl over halfway with rice (they don't offer sushi rice which is odd for a poke place imo) and small portions of everything else from the fish to the toppings. I was on a time crunch too, but I thought usually poke spots have pretty busy inside with only one employee working. I ordered a regular poke bowl with half lettuce and half steamed rice with crab salad, for my proteins: I got all salmon; for sides: I got carrots and cucumbers; for sauces: I got poke sauce on the side; and for toppings: I got edamame, lemon, seaweed salad, and tobiko. Overall the poke bowl was decent, but it definitely not worth the price - it was pretty expensive for what it is. I LOVE this place! I arrived here just a little after 12 and the place was packed. There was a line but the service was speedy so yay! As seen, I got the 2 seared salmon with a bunch of other stuff, but overall, the salmon tastes good with the combination of the sauces , it was just bomb. When I walked in, there was only one customer during lunch which was odd, as they used to be so busy at all times (a long time ago). The man working (seems like the owner) acted as though he was being forced to work against his will - very tired and irritable. I don't really care too much about service so this is the reason why I'm leaving 1 star - the portions and taste. This man scooped the fish as if every piece of fish was costing him $10 a piece. I've never been to a stingier poke shop and it was actually so comical that I thought he was messing with me at first. After getting all toppings, the bowl was only half full by the end. Not only was he stingy with the fish, but with everything else - especially the sauces. Although I asked for three different sauces mixed in, all I could taste was fish. He put in a couple drops in there as if this was a science experiment. Toppings tasted stale and avocado tasted rancid. Poke Don was the first build-your-own poke spot this part of the East Bay so it gained a lot of traction right away. What stops me from being a fan is the size of their fish cuts and scoop - they are both relatively small. Everything appears to be at par with any other poke places so there's really nothing that separates this from the rest other than its location. The nearest one is in Dublin so this is pretty much where most of the San Ramon / Danville folks go. Choose the base, proteins, sides, sauce, toppings, and seasonings and their it is - your poke bowl. Certain proteins, sides, and toppings require additional payment. Combos and Specials are also displayed on the wall. I've had a spring mix salad base with salmon and seared albacore as the proteins. I had them include some of the free add-ons plus a blend of mild poke and unagi sauces and my selections turned out to be fine. Of course, this would have been a better experience If the cuts of fish and scoops were bigger. read more

Poke don is located in the Diablo plaza right next door to 11 o cluck (previously April 8 cafe). At this moment, they are only doing to-go orders. There are signs on the ground to lead you to the starting point where your order will be taken. I wouldn't call this traditional Hawaiian poke since traditional Hawaiian poke generally does not have massive amount of toppings. I love both styles of poke. Poke don is one of the rare poke places that has a LOT of topping options while still providing free crab mix and seaweed salad. You start by choosing your base between salad, rices, or half of both. The base also includes a choice of either crab mix, spicy crab mix, or spicy tuna. Then you move on to your protein choices and depending on the size bowl you get, you get to choose between 2 - 4 scoops of various fish. After that, you get to choose your sauces and then your toppings. Usually by the end of the creation of the bowl, my bowl is nice and big and fills my stomach up. I usually get about 95% of the toppings they offer. Some of the toppings they offer are unique like the Japanese style pickled cucumber, fukujin zuke, shiitake, and japanese pickled radish. All of which I love and recommend. It gives your bowl a nice crunchy factor and enhances the flavor of your bowl. The reason I don't give this place 5 stars is because although these bowls are delicious, the freshness of the fish isn't the freshest I've had. I've tried salmon, tuna, octopus, and albacore. All these fishes are good with the bowl, but I wouldn't be able to eat them on their own. I would still say this is the best poke place you will find in San Ramon. read more

I'm not a poke person. I'd stay FAR away from raw fish, and wouldn't appreciate it in the few times I had it. So whenever we came to Poke Don (because my wife loves poke), I'd always opt for the cooked "poke bake." Which is basically like a whole bowl of a deconstructed Lion King roll. And I loved it. For years, I had the poke bake. And it'd be enough if this review ended here. I'd probably give it 5 stars based on their poke bake alone - because I can eat it (since it's cooked) and I enjoy it. But one time, I DID decide to try a regular poke bowl. With little to no raw fish, of course. Unagi, tamago, fake crab, real crab - there's definitely a way to do it. Except I put in one scoop of raw salmon. And to my surprise, I actually didn't mind the blend of everything (including the salmon) with the sauce, rice, and toppings. Even I was shocked that I liked it. Since that day, I'm able to mix up my orders. Sometimes I'll stick with the ol' reliable - the poke bake. Poke Don usually has some really good poke but WOW was my experience pretty awful today! I went in and ordered a medium poke bowl with tuna and a whole bunch of toppings. The lady taking my order was pretty rude and curt the entire time. She actually rolled her eyes at me when I asked for extra spicy mayo!!! I asked for green onions as a topping and the guy told me that they didn't have anymore. I said I would wait for them to cut more and he told me no. Okay. Honestly all of that is whatever. But the MOST offensive thing of this whole experience was the seaweed salad. Their seaweed salad is absolutely inedible! I have never had seaweed salad that disgusting in my life. I literally had to pick it out of my bowl because whenever I tasted it I wanted to gag. Their seaweed salad recipe needs to be amended because wow it was bad. I went with the medium bowl with white rice, which came with 3 different types of protein. I got the salmon, yellowtail (extra charge) and the tuna. You also get an extra scoop of protein at the beginning - at other places I've been to this is usually just crab salad, but here they had spicy tuna so I went with that. I chose the spicy house poke sauce and added cucumber, edamame, masago, green onion, ginger, and ginger. They also had some less common ingredients like tamago for an extra charge, as well as basic ones like avocado and mango. The bowl was delicious, everything was super fresh. I love that the house spicy poke sauce wasn't overwhelming, although I definitely wouldn't call it spicy at all. Just subtly sweet. Every time that I've come here, all of the ingredients tasted delicious and fresh. Solid poke for the suburbs! The wait here can definitely get a bit long - especially on weekends/ lunch time. I waited around ~30 minutes in line, so not ideal for a quick pick up and go (they also do not take any phone / mobile orders) I got a medium bowl which was a good size and fairly priced with 3 scoops of protein. The crab salad and seaweed salad scoops were a bit on the smaller side, but I love the assortment of Japanese pickles that they have as options (at no additional charge, part of the standard assembly).
