This is a new poke place that I tried on a road trip. All in all, the flavors are pretty solid but I feel that the efforts to keep the place hygienic and clean go on overkill where the smell of Clorox/other cleaning substances affect the overall experience. Also, I realize the need for plexiglass but the ordering system is a little inconvenient as you have TVs that do not project the menu but instead lay out paper menus that have the options for you. All in all, I would say a 3.5 or 4. The food, however, was pretty fresh but nothing too out of the ordinary. read more

OK so I have wanted to try this place for a long time. They had you take the menu and circle what you want. I guess because Covid it's just easier to have it circle and know exactly what the customer wants vs trying to yell it over the counter. The place has a similar set up to a subway/chipolte where you have all the toppings and decide what you want. I hadn't been there before so I got a bowl off the menu that had things on it already that go well together. It was a spicy tuna bowl.. it has a lot of things.. again I'm not super familar with it all but I would definitely go back to try more. The tuna was sooo good! It had pineapple on there too. I appreciated how they had lots of topping options with crispy onions/garlic, nori (seaweed flakes), tempura flakes, etc. I think their protein, sauces, and mix-in ingredient options are pretty standard. The portion sizes were good but I feel like other places provide a higher protein to rice/topping ratio at this price. I got the poke salmon today and I enjoyed how the fish was indeed marinated with the poke sauce. Their spicy aioli and ponzu sauce (my go-to sauces) were pretty good as well! Overall yum poke but I wish the service was a little better? When I walked in, it was unclear to me that I had to write down my order and hand it to staff. There were so many signs and the staff at the front just watched me struggle to orient myself. Another customer made the same mistake!! Staff are always very attentive, good 10% discount for CNU staff and students, military, officers, and shipyard w ID. Tonight I stopped in to grab two Rainbow Bowls- my favorites are the Rainbow and Hawaiian Classic in that order. Another recommendation I have is to skip the onions and crispy onions- just a better taste to me. You come in and grab a paper menu and mark on the pages what you want and any adjustments such as my no onions. Great location next to Christopher Newport University, along a food strip mall especially a boba tea place. Get a menu, circle what ingredients you want in the poke bowl and wallah - too easy! If you're undecided then just pick a bowl from one of their Signature bowl. Fresh ingredients and generous on portion BUT next time I'll have to say hold off on too much sauce. This place has been part of my Yelp Collection for about a year. It is located near CNU and offers dishes for a pretty decent price. Since they serve poke, which has been a dish I've always wanted to try, it was a no brainer for me. Upon entering the building, you see signs for face masks and staying 6 feet apart. Inside, the tables are tapered off and the front counter is covered in plexiglass and a door opening where they serve your food. Safety at it's finest. Actually, I ordered from here twice. Here are the visits below: -For the first time, I ordered a large 'create your own' dish with consisted of sushi rice as the base, poke tuna and fried tofu for protein, poke sauce, a few veggies and onion crisps. Very impressed. Both the tuna and tofu was plenty. At first I was concerned about the amount of rice in the bowl, but once I mixed all the ingredients, that went away quick. The poke sauce is sweet, but not overpowering. Truly, truly satisfying to have this dish. -For the 2nd order, I ordered the same bowl, but instead of fried tofu replaced with octopus. Just like before, very satisfied. Even my girlfriend decided to order for the night. Her pick was the same bowl, but had shrimp and fried tofu for proteins, brown rice as the base, sweet soy sauce and garlic crisps. Somehow, they didn't put enough brown rice in her dish compared to the amount of sushi rice in mine, but she really enjoyed it. We'll forgive them for this one. Talk about finding a great spot for comfort food that doesn't break your wallet and serve healthier options. There will definitely be more visits here. **OLD?? GRAY SALMON** So incredibly disappointed not just in the issue but also their attitude in resolving it. I ordered a poke bowl from here via GrubHub and it arrived in the estimated time frame, and as I took a bite something was super off. The taste itself was fine but the texture was EXTREMELY slimey. Coat-your-mouth-with-slime type slimey. I spit out the bite and saw nothing wrong so I convinced myself to take another, and boy do I wish I hadn't. I inspected the bite thoroughly before eating and it was fine, I figured maybe I just got a weird combination of extras that made a bad texture. Nope. Two or three bites later, again, just terrible overwhelming slime. I then decide I can't eat any more and start picking through looking for anything out of the ordinary. This is raw fish, after all. The tuna looked fine and a few chunks of the salmon looked fine... and then I found it. All of the smaller chunks of salmon were grayish on at least one side, almost as if they took a previous days fish and chopped it smaller and added it to supplement the days fresh supply. I immediately fished out a few of these gray pieces and took a few photos and called the restaurant. I will get my refund from GrubHub, so I wasn't after anything *from* them, but I wanted them to know, so they didn't have this happen to others. When I explained the problem they asked several times which fish it was, and then told me that was impossible as they cut the fish fresh every morning. I told them I had photos and can assure them that the fish is gray and has an awful texture, mixed with some that was "fine", that it may be cut "fresh" but is definitely not good. I then heard laughing and them again telling me that's not possible and they offered to make me another bowl. I asked them if they weren't going to acknowledge that an issue was possible why would I want a bowl from the same stock of fish that I had just called about? They then asked if I wanted to place another order or what. Attached are photos of the fish. Really, really disappointed that not only was such a gross mistake made but more so that they refused to even attempt to correct it and instead gaslight about it even being possible. I've gotten bowls from here before that were great but with this issue and their refusal to even acknowledge it, I cannot possibly take the chance again and feel it's only responsible to leave this review warning others. Our server and " poke maker" was extremely patient with us as we tried to navigate this Hawaiian/Japanese dish with its many different choices of protein, toppings and sauces. I had been impatiently waiting for this restaurant to open. It is finally open for business now and I must say, it was worth the wait! I love poke and this restaurant does not disappoint! Everything was super fresh, super tasty, the staff was very very friendly, and they were also running a special where if you bought a large poke bowl you would get a free bubble tea a few doors away in the plaza at Kung Fu tea! Went today for the first time and fully expect I'll be returning many many times. I got the large poke bowl which lets you choose 2 protein options. I got (1) crab and (2) spicy crab, both of which were good. I got white rice (brown also an option), and on top I went simple, just did cucumber, sesame seeds and tempura flakes. And then I got spicy ailoi and poke sauce on the side. They're doing 20% off through the end of the month, so head in quick to give it a try! I'd note though, they have lots of options for toppings so they don't necessarily give you much of any one. So next time I'll be asking them to load on the cucumber. DELICIOUS!
