So packed! Poke Medium Bowl with 2 Proteins
    Chelsey T.

I really do love this place. What a smart idea! Choose what size bowl you want. Choose what starch you want. Choose what protein you would like. Choose your sauce. Choose your toppings. Easy! I usually always either go with Ahi and Hamachi but sometimes they run out of Hamachi, so I go with Ahi and salmon. Fish is so fresh! They mix what sauce you choose with the protein right then and there. They have a bunch of toppings to choose from. A little overwhelming but so good! Quick service, very efficient, and nice two that always are working!

This place is one of my go-tos in downtown when I feel like grabbing something affordable and healthy. The workers are very friendly and always stuff your bowl. Their fish aren't the greatest quality, but considering how affordable it is and how much toppings they give you, I definitely think it's a good place for lunch.

Large bowl with spicy ahi, hamachi, ahi, two sauces, edamame, ocean salad and masago. Yumm!!!

My lunch mates and I ended up at the Pauahi Tower location after striking out at a place across the street. Hmmm, what to choose? It was the large bowl for me, with a combination of multi-grain rice and spring mix greens with spicy ahi, hamachi and ahi. My sauces were the wasabi aioli and the yuzu wasabi. My toppings were edamame, ocean salad and masago. Whoa, the bowl weighed almost two pounds! It was simply delicious and way too much food for lunch. I ended up taking half home for dinner. It used to be $12.95 but it's now $16.95. Even so, it remains a deal as it ended up being two meals for me.

This has become one of my favorite places to grab a poke bowl in downtown Honolulu. Good quality ahi and salmon, love the flavor options and add-ons on top of sushi, plain or brown rice and/or greens. Friendly staff in this grab-and-go restaurant located at Bishop Square on the mall level of Pauahi Tower. There are a couple of tables if you want to dine in. Go get some!

Definitely a nice lunch spot. The portion size are big so I couldn't finish my bowl at one time. If you work downtown, make your way to Pokeway for lunch.

I'm not sure if I was discriminated or they just didn't like me for some reason but they were giving me attitude for no reason and I feel like their attitudes affected my portion size today. As I was checking out and the lady was almost pressuring me to tip her on the tip menu and as I pressed none I believe she said something bad about me in her language to her coworker. KEEP IN MIND that this was my FIRST time here and last time as I was told by many people that this place gives you a packed bowl and as seen on yelp pictures you can see the bowls filled to the top. If this was based off discrimination I am honestly ashamed of this place that discrimination still exists. UPDATE: my cashiers name on my receipt is Vivid A if that's any help to anyone!

Tried their new location next to Square barrels in Bishop Square. It's still as good as I remember and affordable. The smallest sized bowl comes with one protein choice served over rice and/or salad, plus three toppings. I got their multigrain purple rice with romaine lettuce. For protein I chose ahi (which is cubed pieces vs "spicy ahi" which is tartare style). They mixed it with my sauce and then I chose tamago, beets, and masago for my toppings. The protein portion is a little small but on par with other build your own poke bowls that use the oz scoopers. Pokeway however is extremely generous with the toppings and rice/salad so it's more filling compared to other spots. I'd definitely come here a lot for lunch if I worked downtown.

Fried onion, furikake toppings. Edamame, ginger and onion for side. spring mix and sushi rice with dynamite salmon and spicy ahi.

Delicious poke! Dynamite sauce is a type of spicy mayo and was so good! This place does not hold back on toppings. Did not expect to finish the bowl but the food was delicious.

Small spicy ahi bowl with edamame, crab salad, masago, furikake, tempura flakes, and crispy garlic
    Jess W.

I really like that you can make your own poke bowl here and it ended up being very tasty. Service was quick too! I especially liked the sushi rice and garlic chips. The spicy ahi flavoring was really good too- not too spicy for my taste. The cons were that they couldn't work the gift card that the restaurant actually gave gratis during a prior Yelp event, which was disappointing. I was only told to use it later bc the cashier didn't know what to do. Also, the poke was like small mushed up bits, instead of chunks like you'd usually expect from a poke place. With the price increase to nearly $11 for a tiny bit of fish, I'd expect a bit nicer fish quality.

If you're not a fan of seafood, don't let the squid deter you as it is a minimal part of the dish and added more of a crunchy textural component rather than actual flavor. This was my wife and my favorite dish. The luau pork was also very good though I liked the version we had at Toa Luau better. We also liked the haupia which was a very refreshing coconut pudding though for some reason our boys didn't like it. We also tried pipikaula which are thinly sliced dry-aged beef short ribs marinated in soy sauce and something else that made it sweet. If you know Korean barbeque, you'll instantly get the sensation that these are close cousins to galbi, though the pipikaula are much less sweet in comparison. The dry aging process also makes them a bit more dryer than galbi. On to more difficult stuff. I was enthusiastic about the fried butterfish collar but once I got a waft of the dish, I knew I was in trouble. I'm very sensitive when it comes to fish so the smell (more than the taste) was off putting. My wife was fine with it and enjoyed the dish, but if you aren't a fan of fishy fish, then I would skip it. The lomi salmon looked very much like pico de gallo with the addition of salt-cured salmon. My boys loved this dish because they love salmon but again I would steer clear if you are a seafood weakling like me. Alas, we come to poi. Had my hopes up since I love taro but the texture and a bit of sourness from fermentation deterred me from trying too much of it. I'm glad we tried it but not sure that we would get it again.

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

Took a chance any way. Server greets everyone who comes in. Too much work for only one server, hard to get taken care of. More than half the tables were full even before 5pm on a Saturday, and there's a steady take out business, too. Looked at the online menu since the server didn't bring us a menu and we were waiting, but it doesn't list the squid luau combo so we had to wait for the server to take our order. She did take care of us before the walk ins that we're ordering take out, and we appreciated that. However, turned out squid luau combo wasn't listed online because they were out. Boo. So hubby and I ordered the laulau combo consisting of a nice sized laulau that was tasty, with a nice ratio of pork to leaves, very large scoop of rice, some lomi salmon that was mostly onions that were quite strong and bitter and almost no salmon, pulehu chicken, which was tasty and had a nice char, and haupia, which was good. So food was fifty/fifty. Hubby ordered a coke, which was bottled Mexican (means real cane sugar) which was yummy. They serve Mexican food so I guess they have other Mexican sodas, but I didn't bother to check the menu. We had to ask for water three times because the server was so busy. We had a lot left over since the portions are big. Not sure if we will be back, though. While the server was nice and trying hard to take care of everyone, heaving to wait to order (another family even came up to ask is they could order after waiting for awhile) and then having to ask for water three times is a turn off for us. Also - no squid luau where's Hawaiian food is served was a major let down for me.

Now I've had a lot of these in my life, and I must say, Iyasume are easily the best. See musubi and onigiri have humble origins as a quickly made homespun snack or on the go lunch, and when you spot them in the convenience environment they're often a giant ball of rice with a tinge of protein or seasoning for flavor. At Iyasume, these are culinary adventures, stacked with ingredients, all in handheld form, and the variety they offer is IMPRESSIVE! Of course musubi starts with the classic, SPAM. I had to order the kimchi + spam, shiso + spam, and unagi + tamago + spam, all of which were awesome (even the next day!). Onigiri here are actually layered with ingredients, so you get them in every bite, unlike the convenience store versions! The salmon belly is cut into bite-sized pieces so I didn't have to worry about using a knife to cut it. I usually try salmon belly where it is usually seasoned lightly to bring out the natural flavor of the salmon, but Guava Smoked's salmon belly is just grilled in a way that makes the salmon sweet/crispy and still get traces of the salmon taste as well. It's definitely not your traditional Japanese-style way of cooking salmon belly but really just their own. I'd go back and get this again. Another thing too. I'd get this with beer. This would hit very hard with alcohol but because I don't drink I need a kombucha. The grilled salmon belly would go perfect with it. Cheers! The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.

Then someone wanted to change from rice to poi. I tried many times and no one answered. Their voice mailbox was full. We e ended going there to make the change. He gentleman looked like he was working be himself. We bads to wait almost a half hour for him to finish the order. 2. Price - the prices were higher than expected. All the plates were $26.00 and up. 3. Food - The poi was very tasty and fresh, although a bit watery. The lau lau had a lot of lean pork filling, not a lot of leaves. The long rice didn't have much chicken and was a bit watery too. We enjoyed the sweet potato. There was also lomi salmon, haupia onion and chili pepper water. 4. As mentioned before there isn't much parking. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there. Overall the food and service was OK. The price was a bit high.
