I have been a regular at Poki Poki for years. It has been amazing and I have felt obligated to support them through Covid. However, they recently changed their bowls to be much smaller and it's like a little appetizer. I had to come home and add handfuls of lettuce. I wasn't watching my bowl being filled, but I'm sure I only got 1 scoop of salmon (I asked for both to be salmon). Also, the employee working was not friendly and I had to ask her to repeat every thing she said. not impressed. kind of a mashed together mash-up. my bowl looked like it was assembled in a blender. i believe food should be composed. mine seemed less inspired by its JAPANESE roots than JACKSON POLLOCK. i grew up in HAWAII and am not usually a stickler for "authenticity" -- if food's good, food's good -- irrespective of how far it strays from tradition. but you do eat with your eyes first. i've heard that often enough it must be true. everybody else's photos look less thrown together so maybe that part of my experience was extra personal. i tried not to be put off by the HENRY FORD assembly line production. i know most food's built that way but it's hard to watch when it happens right in front of you. i had the brown rice (nice to have that option) and the three oversized scoops (the serving size for a "regular" bowl) made for an overly filling lunch i couldn't finish unless i wanted to waddle out stuffed. NOTE TO SELF: skip the avocado (not seasoned separately) and mashed into a chunky guacamole. added nothing to the dish. here's the bummer part of lunch: the rice was still warm and started to cook the "raw" fish which kinda defeats the point of a POKI bowl. if i ever do a spread in PLAYBOY, i gotta remember to list warm POKI bowls as one of my turnoffs. on the plus side, i asked for spicy and got spicy and the "scoops" of salmon and yellow fin (octopus, shrimp, yellow tail and spicy tuna are also available) were generous -- so the value's there. if you're starving, you certainly won't leave hungry. i didn't, just a little disappointed. read more

Fantastic! Divine! Scrumptious! Must go place for poki. It's sooooo gooood! Fish are super fresh! They give you either brown rice or white rice as your base. The selection of fish includes tuna, albacore, yellow tail, cooked octopus, etc. Careful with the avocado, it is not free, they will charge you extra for that, but they did not tell is...but it was worth it. Enjoyed the meal so much that my coworker and bought their very expensive macaron ice cream sandwich which is half the price of our meal, but we deserved it after a great meal and working hard all day. You get to add quite few choices, 3 seafood selections, sauce, toppings and all over rice. I was excited to find out that there is new a poki place close to me! It's good, but didn't have me impressed and coming back for more. It's a build your own bowl style, which I really like. You choose your base, protein, sauce, then toppings. The regular size bowl was about $10 (with tax). The fish tasted pretty fresh, although portions were fairly small. Compared to other poki places I've been, that's pretty pricey for a small amount of fish, but they were generous with all the fixings. I was a little surprised that they also charged an extra $1 for avocado on top of the higher price, I guess I'm just used to avocado being included in poki bowls. The staff was very polite and helpful. For beverages they offer canned sodas, some bottled beverages, and an area where you can fill a water cup. They also offered ice cream sandwiches which looked delicious (although I was too full to try one). The restaurant is simple and clean. They offer counter top seating along the windows and 3 - 4 tables. There was a lot of wall space where more seating could be placed, but they are such a new restaurant I couldn't tell if they were reserving that space for something else (hopefully a soda/ice machine?). My main reason for only giving Poki Poki 3 stars is the lack of flavor in their sauce, which is the essence of a poki bowl! I frequently eat poki, and there's an expected flavor associated with any entree having "poki" in the name. I've been craving a Poki bowl for weeks, so for a bowl that cost me $11... So bummed to give them two stars because I love their poké but I'm pretty grossed out by today's visit. When I walked in, there were two employees behind the counter, one of which had very long, blonde hair. Her hair was NOT tied in the back (CA health code violation) and was in fact only tied in two front ponytails that sat in front of her shoulders. As she was making our food, she had to lean over to scoop toppings towards the back of the display and her hair was dangling over the toppings and fish, and on top of the bowls that she had already prepared!!! To make matters worse, she was wearing a tank top so her underarms were directly over the food in the display. Came here on an evening with my cousin after all this hype, so we finally checked it out. I had a large bowl which is I think either $1.25 or $1.50 more and gets you an extra scoop of fish. Sorry Poki Poki, I really wish I didn't have to do this. My how things have changed. Wife and I used to go 3 times a week when we first discovered this spot. As another Yelper mentioned; it was inviting, military and law enforcement friendly, clean, and the food was delicious. We moved away and still come back to the area every few weeks and have been meaning to swing by for some delicious poki. I don't know if it's the pressure of opening multiple locations and those not profiting as much; but it seems they've gotten stingy with their scoops, shrunk the scoop for crab and avocado, gotten rid of their military discount, and stopped even using fresh gloves to mix the sauce on their fish. With the number of poki places opening in San Diego, I really wish they'd done what they needed to stay competitive, but I can now say that I can find a better value elsewhere. read more

Thought it was excellent. The pickled ginger was highly pungent. Based on pictures I've seen posted of their menu, I was surprised to see that their prices already went up. A large bowl went from $9.95 to $10.50. But I've been told that for the amount of usually expensive raw fish you get and the price you pay that it's still a good deal. Came during their soft opening with high expectations due to some reviews I read on here. Unfortunately, I wasn't very impressed. I got the regular with 3 scoops, then I realized how TINY the scooper was. The server barely even put much fish in the scoop too. I've been to a lot of poke places similarly priced and you get a lot more fish for what you pay for. Then when it came time for sauces, it looked like he barely put any and when I asked for more, it still looked pretty dry. (Also, I got the spicy sauce and it did not taste spicy). When it was finally time to eat it, I was honestly not impressed with the quality. I was so sad because I was finally looking forward to one of these poke places in North San Diego but I don't expect myself to go here even if I'm desperate. We are new to Poke bowls but my husband and I were eager to try this and we love Poki Poki. The fish is fresh and plentiful and you can make it however you want. The small bowl is plenty of fish - the large is a bit more than I can handle. I prefer to leave off the ponzu, chili oil and sesame oil or ask for them on the side. I love that brown rice and salad are both options for the base and they don't cost extra. Other free toppings include seaweed salad, red caviar, and crab. Poki Poki in Oceanside looked like a very promising Poki place. I've been here twice, once a week after their grand opening and a second time recently around 8:30 PM on a Friday night. The first time I went, the store was clean, the staff was inviting and helpful (having several people work the counter to ensure speed and process), and the food tasted flavorful. Overall that experience was satisfying and even though it is not the best Poki I've had, it was worth it and delicious for the location and price. This second and most recent time has been much more lacking, the store beginning to close 30 minutes early by taking chairs down from the outside, toppings and certain choice meats already being removed from the food bar, and staff on their cell phones, upon entering. I am not much one to knit pick however that was one of the few times I have felt the least welcomed to go to a food venue who still claims to be open and running. The food itself was alright, ordering the Poki Medium with all toppings, spicy tuna and spicy salmon and I did indeed take it to go since it seemed like the employees didn't want their customers lurking around the store. Delicious! Just opened, and I'm already a huge fan (helps that I live two minutes away). The bowls are large and affordable; it's 8.95 for three scoops of fish, and all the toppings are free except the avocado, which is a dollar extra. I got two scoops of tuna and one of salmon, and I found there to be more than enough fish in my portion. I am extremely protein deficient due to gastrointestinal and abdominal surgery I had several years ago, so I am always on the hunt for establishments that I can go to that will not fill me up, make my stomach hurt, and provide a light fare that will be agreeable with my GI issues as well as provide me much-needed protein. Everything from the tuna to the poki to the variety of choices they have available have never ceased in making my taste palate happy, but I don't leave there feeling bloated and sick, as I do in many restaurants I visit. Fish appears to be the easiest source of protein I can digest, and although I'd never been a fish person before (especially the thought of raw fish!), I've definitely been made a fan due to restaurants such as this one. The ambiance is casual, and not too loud...but you're not afraid of having a conversation with someone else because the place is too quiet either! The staff are all incredibly kind and helpful, and even when I spilled (yes, SPILLED) my food everywhere, they brought me another plate free of charge. I am physically disabled as well and sometimes have trouble with my motor skills. They were so kind and made a potentially embarrassing situation far easier to deal with. I would recommend just about everything about this place...and I wish I hadn't been so preoccupied with the fact that my clumsiness made such a huge mess to get some of the wait staff's names to give them props here, but this certainly won't be my last visit here. At some other poke places I have ordered the regular bowl, and gone away still hungry (even after paying $10 for it). This was definitely not the case. The regular bowl was around $9 and I couldn't even finish it! Well, I finished everything except for all of the rice. They do not skimp on the toppings at all. And, most of the toppings are included in the price. For example, I got the regular, which included two scoops of poke (I got yellowtail and ahi, both which tasted extremely fresh) and added edamame, ginger, wasabi, some spicy mayo, onions, cucumbers, seaweed, imitation crab salad, and more and nothing of that cost extra. The guys working at the store were also really nice and friendly. And, another great thing about this place is they have a coca-cola freestyle machine.
