Pollo Campero? More like Pollo No-No. So often restaurants have a good product but, it gets ruined by reality. Pollo Campero's food is good and it should be. The Peruvian chicken, the yuca, the plantains are all great. But then there's everything else. It's still basically a fast food place marginally better than Taco Cabana. Why is it better than Taco Cabana, well Taco C is grease personified and PC doesn't have that issue because South American food is different. The white rice and black beans are really good. The beef tacos, served street style are really tasty bites. But, the salsa bar is terrible. I absolutely love salsas. Basically, they offer onion and cilantro, a mild tamarind sauce, a "spicier" tamarind sauce which is about as spicy as the sit and be fit lady. May god rest her soul, and some more tomato based concoction which is like a watery pico. The final straw which I could have lead off with is the people taking your order are just shy of being completely useless. Trust me it's not a language barrier thing at all. They just didn't seem to be paying attention. I hope I can say it's just because the place is new but, it's been open for a bit now. Pollo Campero is no bueno. I tried this restaurant when it first opened. I was excited that there was a new place that was close to the house that I could grab a quick bite. I tried it right after they opened and I excused the less than stellar food as growing pains. Unfortunately I was wrong wrong wrong. The man was hungry the other night on the way home and we weren't wanting to go anywhere to sit down and he had never been and I relented and let him try Pollo Campero. He is free to review his own meal and I will focus on mine. I ordered the tomatillo chicken taco. Peruvian style chicken, fresh made guacamole, queso fresco, green tomatillos and cilantro. Sounds amazing. Unfortunately it was a mushy, off tasting mess. I was able to swallow one bite and I was really sorry that I did. I truly understood what it meant for my stomach to churn as soon as this reached my gut. I spent the rest of the evening sorry that I had swallowed this and not spit it out. I went to this location at just about 8 p.m. on a Sunday night. As I arrived, I noticed no one in the parking lot or at the drive-thru. I thought that was strange but chalked it up to a Sunday night. I went there hoping to have found a local go-to chicken place for the family. The first sign of things going awry was that all the menus mention 3 types of chicken; grilled, crunchy and extra crunchy. I ordered a family meal and decided to evenly split the order to try all 3 types. I was immediately told that they no longer serve the extra crunchy. Not just that night, but apparently for good. Okay, a bit unprofessional but not a huge deal. I ordered an 8 piece family meal box of chicken with two sides; French fries and cole slaw. I paid for the order and drove home, about 2-3 minutes away. My son was starving, so he immediately opened the chicken. This boy will eat anything, literally almost anything but he spit this chicken out. The chicken they decided to serve me had obviously been cooked long ago and sat on warmers for a long long time. It was dried out, wrinkly, and despite the warmers, barely and I mean barely warm. It was not good. I'm a person that likes mayonnaise but their coleslaw had so much mayonnaise you could barely notice the cabbage, it was literally, not figuratively drowning in it, and had no flavor at all. The French fries were literally cold, ice cold, un-edible. We tossed them with the rest of the meal immediately. I guess I should have checked the order before I left but to me, that's their job. If I owned this business, I'd be embarrassed. They literally stole money from me...the implicit contract being somewhat recently cooked and warm and fresh food for a price. They severely violated their end of the bargain. Part of me understand their commercial decision. One of the biggest things to avoid in the restaurant business is spoilage, having food that does not earn any revenue (don't want to cook too much or have food expire in refrigeration, etc.) They didn't want to have any wasted food (spoilage) at the end of the night so they served the next sucker (who happened to me) the dregs of their last cook which was obviously a long time prior to me arriving. The problem with their big business decision is that while they may have had an efficient night of food cooked to food served ratio (minimized spoilage) they'll never see me, my family or anyone we mention this experience to again. Not one penny more, ever. Ergo, it was a bad business decision. End of the night...I went to a nearby Subway and picked up some yummy subs for the family...my son devoured his in less than 30 seconds. read more

2.5 stars. I tried three tacos, all three empanadas, the queso and the mango agua fresca and spent nearly $20 and was not super impressed. The empanadas were the best part and actually had different flavor profiles -- spicy chicken was my favorite. Tamarind chicken was also tasty. The tacos weren't bad, but were significantly more expensive than the empanadas, and not as filling. Both the chicken tacos tasted the same and the seasoning on the pork taco tasted the same as the chicken. The pickled red onions were a nice touch, but overall, I wouldn't reorder the tacos. The queso was TERRIBLE. I love queso, but this was the worst I've ever had. Salty and full of cumin. It didn't even taste like cheese. The mango agua fresca was more like mango koolaid, and less like a FRESH fruit drink, but it quenched my thirst. I wanted to like this place since I live right down the street and love latin food (any time you start a review like that it can't be good news....) We headed in to grab some take out, and was impressed with the service (they were standing there explaining their menu, etc and the staff seemed very friendly) We ordered the crispy seasoned chicken platter with beans and rice, and the taco duo (carnitas taco and carne asada with yuca fries). Upon getting everything home, I was disappointed with the quality of the food. The chicken strips were really dry---and seemed to have more breading than actual meat. The tacos were awful. Seriously awful. I couldn't taste the beef in the carne asada because it was over-saturated with sauce. The carintas was sickly salty, yet bland at the same time. Not to mention my side of yuca fries consisted of four fries. Literally four. All in all, I would much rather spend $20 at any number of the local joints in town.... read more

The chicken here is amazing. I didn't even know chicken could taste better but it can and they know how to do it right here. Even though I removed the skin from my chicken it did not rob it of the flavor. I wonder how do they make their chicken taste so amazing. Oh and the hibiscus tea...amazing! The staff there are very kind and they believe in keeping a clean restaurant. If I am to do fast food chicken then I am coming here because they definitely do it right. My last visit was in Los Angeles years ago, so I was super excited when I found out this chain has locations in Houston. I arrived around 5:30pm on a Monday and the tiny parking lot was completely full. So I pulled up to the drive through only to be met with a "coming soon" sign. So I sighed, thinking I'll have to come back another day when I spotted a family walking out the doors. I walked inside and was greeted by an employee standing at the door handing out menus. I already knew what I wanted, but it was nice to see the other choices. I had no idea they also served things like tacos and empanadas. So I decided to try a chicken empanada in addition to my fried chicken meal (leg and thigh combo). The two piece meal came with a side, chips and an option of tortilla. First off, I waited like 15 minutes for the meal to come out. I heard one of the waitresses explain they ran out of chicken and are cooking up another batch. I guess they are still pretty new at this stuff since the location only opened a short while ago. The good thing is the chicken was hot and fresh when it was brought out. However, the flavor was lacking from my previous experience in LA. The breading was tasty, but the chicken itself was totally bland. I had to dip it in salsa to get some flavour out of it. Very disappointing, I felt like KFC's original recipe has more flavor than this. The empanada was very good, much better than the fried chicken. The crust was not heavy and the filling was tasty. The side I choose was fried yucca, which tastes just like potatoes to me. They're cut thick, like proper English chips you would find at fish and chip shops. However, I only got four pieces with my meal, which I thought was rather skimpy. There's a salsa bar for chips and they had three kinds, a green tomalito, a chipotle and a hot red one. There's also pico de gallo, onions and cilantro mix on the salad bar. For drinks, they have the standard soda fountain as well as horchata, mango and guava fruit juices. I tried the horchata and found it a bit too strong on the cinnamon. There was like half an inch of cinnamon at the bottom of my glass. Horchata is a sweet drink made from rice, kinda like sweet soymilk with cinnamon. Overall, it wasn't really what I had expected in terms of fried chicken tastiness or value. But I might be back for the empanadas if I'm in the area. I won't make a special effort to come out here again for the chicken though. read more

On my way to memorial park for some golf I was passed this. So I figured I'd stop here rather than Beck's for a quick bite. I went through the drive through and ended up getting the Chicken Tomatillo Pressed Sandwhich with a side of the cucumber and tomato salad. Both were really good, I really liked the flavor of the chicken and the bread. I'm generally a fan of cilantro but it was a little much for me. I hope to see it grow in other parts of the city too. Another reason I chopped off the fifth star is the fact that it can be very pricey. I've been to other locations, like one in FL, and though it's the same company/brand, the menus can be slightly different. I've seen Pollo Campero locations close down before; so, of course I hope more people can give this place a chance, given the fact that it's in a popular area. Overall, the food is great. Ok I love tacos but this wasn't at all what I expected. It may be a personal opinion but the tacos tasted strange. Definitely not the tacos I'm used to from LA or Houston. I got the Peruvian Chicken taco, Yucatan Carnitas taco, and chips and queso. Pros - The establishment was exceptionally clean and organized. Always a pro in my book. The food and meat was definitely high quality. The chips that were given had a spicy seasoning which I liked. Cons - There were four cars in the drive-thru and we didn't move for 20 minutes. No joke. I wanted to leave but I thought it best not. Again, the tacos are just not my cup of tea. A strange taste and I couldn't even finish the Yucatan Carnitas taco. The queso was chunky and had no flavor. Easily the best/healthiest restaurant with a drive-thru. The grilled chicken is awesome! The sides are really good, but I think my favorites are red beans/rice and the quinoa salad. The biggest thing for me is most of their items are GLUTEN FREE. Its so great to have a "semi-fast food" gluten free option. On Wednesday they have a Family Feast for only $9.99. It can easily feed 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 kids. Great value. read more

I would have given this place 4 stars, but feel that they still need to work on some things. We were in the neighborhood and wanted to try this place out. It opened about 10 days ago and the drive-thru is not open yet, so I went in for my to-go order. We ordered a family meal - the Peruvian citrus grilled whole chicken which comes with 2 sides. We chose the fried yuca and black beans & rice. Upon waiting for our order, the staff was very attentive and offered a taste of the horchata drink. It was sweet and definitely a dessert drink. I'm not a huge fan of sweets so I will pass the next time. The wait was a little over 10 minutes for the fried yuca to cook, which would be significant if I were outside waiting in the drive thru. Hopefully they figure that one out before it opens. They have a self serve salsa bar which has several salsas to choose from. I liked the chipotle tamarind salsa, which was spicy. The chicken was juicy and tasty. My husband enjoyed it too. The fried yuca was good and crispy on the outside - worth the wait. The black beans and rice portion seemed small to feed a family of 3-4. For fast food, the price seemed a little high as far as portions go, but good for a tasty semi-healthy meal. I would go there again rather then any fast food establishment in that area. read more

I live in the area and watched them build the restaurant from the ground up so I really, really wanted to like this place! I've been twice and don't really see the point in going again. The first time I tried the Peruvian Citrus Grilled Chicken, black beans and rice & the Chilean Tomato Cucumber Salad. Got the food home, took a bit of the salad and holy cow, was it sour!! I like some tang here and there but I could only eat a couple of bites of it. The 1/4 chicken was actually quite small. It tasted ok but overall for $8.75 I didn't think it was worth it. I gave it another chance the following week and ordered the fried chicken and black beans and rice. There was a funky after taste in the chicken...another fail. Just tried this recently opened Pollo Campero last night. To be fair, I am a vegetarian and my hubby is a major meat eater... Good: The juices - throwbacks to the real agua frescas in Mexico - fresh, no corn syrup - real sugar. Salsas - we tried all of them, made fresh daily, very good - all of them on the sweeter side. Fried Chicken - crispy (although they may tell you that their "pressure fryer" will make it different than any other fried chicken you've had) - nope, same ol' fried chicken you are used to. Bad: Empanadas - extremely small and over priced $2.30 for one bean and cheese. You will be able to eat it in 2 bites. Was more dough than bean and cheese Nothing for veggie eaters - no veggie tacos, etc. Soup - the bowl ($3.99) is only 3 swallows of soup - you'll need to go for 2 bowls if you want a meal of soup. Cajun fries - don't be fooled, just seasoning salt and cajun powder on regular fries. Go here if you need a quick fix - but remember, it's a colorful, clean looking fast food place. I went in expecting a new twist on a chipotle-type place...no such luck. FF portions, and quality. read more

What a letdown. Everything here was subpar - service to the food. While we did enjoy a nice overview of the menu from a greeter, we waited 10(!) mins in line to order at the counter. This was at 5pm by the way, only 2-3 people in front of us. Made no sense. Portions are very small. Fried and grilled chicken was very dry. Bland sauces. I had the fried chicken meal. The chicken was soggy and greasy. There was no redeeming quality to the chicken. The sides were not much better. The signature coleslaw was really a cucumber salad and was lacking in flavor. The yucca fries did not taste like anything either. When I lived in California, there was this place called Pollo Loco that was always pretty good...not great, but pretty good and very fresh-tasting, so at first sight...i thought they'd finally made their way to Houston. YES, I know they're already here, but this review is not for them! haha Needless to say, we just had to try this place a couple months ago and we've certainly been back more than a few times to say that it's definitely a great place to go eat if you kind of want mexican food but with a kind of south american twist to it. I usually go with the chicken plate and sides so I couldn't tell you about the rest of the menu, but from what I've tasted the couple times I've been, they definitely have something here. Yeah, you will hear or read some reviews from hispanic people saying that they didn't like it, but that's mainly because this place falls along the path of a fusion-type restaurant. Food was not delivered to their table in the order they were paid for . Food was over priced for the quality. I was pleasantly surprised by this place! I went through the drive through on a Saturday just as they opened at 11am. I decided to try the Latin Mix Trio in which I get to choose 3 tacos and a side. I ordered the Peruvian Chicken, Tomatillo Chicken, and Yucatan Carnitas with chips and salsa as my side. Both of the chicken tacos were truly tasty. The chicken was well marinated and flavorful. The white cheese melted on the tacos was so delicious. It was one of those white cheeses I'd never be able to find at the grocery store. The carnitas taco on the other hand was not that good. I don't know if it was the pickled onions or the meat, but something tasted off and bitter. I only took 2 bites. The chips and salsa were delicious, as I was craving them. I cannot wait to come back to try the other sides. There was a tomato and cucumber salad, plantains, and a quinoa salad. All sound delicious. Even better - on my receipt there is a coupon for $5 off my next order. I'll be back soon!! UPDATE: My second time here I ordered the same 2 chicken tacos and tried the steak and jalapeño taco. So, I came back here and ordered the empanadas. i got one pork and one chicken. I though i would be more hungry so i got a side of black beans and rice. It was delicious. The empanadas had so much flavor and were cooked very well. I did not need the side, but i ate 1/3 and then saved the rest. Now, i have had red beans & rice but not black beans & rice. I loved it. i thought it would be plain and not much taste, but the black beans went well with the white rice. The only thing i added was a some dashes of hot sauce. I will be back, and hopefully next time i have time to sit at restaurant on patio to enjoy meal. read more

Pollo Campero is ok, just ok. They're not better than El Rey, in my opinion. It's more of a commercial version of El Rey. I also think they're kind of expensive for the kind of food that's there, in comparison to El Rey. I'm only comparing the two because they have similar foods and are right next door to each other. When you visit, try the spicy chicken empanadas. If you're used to authentic or homemade enchiladas, then they won't be great, but they're definitely good and fresh! read more

I came to this place with a couple of friends after getting an ad in the mail and I'm glad I did! We got the "pick three" combos so we can all try a little of everything (since it all looked so good!) and we were not disappointed! The staff was all very friendly and attentive to our needs during our visit. Being latin myself, I felt it was true to latin cuisine.
