Stopped by after the Touch-a-Truck event at the Merrick Library. Instead of figuring out individual meals, we went with the 8-piece family meal, knowing it might be a bit too much food. The meal includes 8 pieces of leg and thigh, 4 rolls, and 2 sides--we chose yucca fries and mac & cheese. I had takeout from a previous Yelp event, so I didn't expect dine-in service, but they gave us a table number and brought the food out to us. They also provided melamine plates, which was a nice surprise and made the meal feel more dine-in than fast-casual. When I the staff member about takeout containers, she misunderstood and immediately brought them over with a bag--honestly, super helpful. Service was outstanding. The food was hot, fresh, and delicious. The chicken was crispy and full of flavor. My son loved the yucca fries and rolls. I especially enjoyed the mac & cheese and chicken. We also tried the jamaica and horchata drinks (not included in the meal), and both were excellent. Pollo Campero expanding with this very spacious bright location. It's all about the chicken and being able to select your Crispy deliciously seasoned Breast, Drums, Thighs. Can't compare this with fast food locations like Popeyes, but can draw similarities to say an old school Boston Market that no longer really exists on L.I. You get an option of a side or a few but more homey to the Latin cultural roots of this chain. Therefore instead of ordering say mashed potatoes you can order Yuca Fries :) which are a healthier version believe or not, with just a slightly starcher root vegetable texture. On this outing to try the new location we opted for the 2 piece Drum Thigh with one side (slaw) drink and dinner roll, and added two Breasts and the Yuca Fries. All were made hot and fresh and served to our table by a friendly counter server, family style in large festive plate (w/side plates, disposable utensils). The flavorful chicken was great, yuca fries yummy and the slaw was definitely worth trying since their recipe tastes different than others. Pricing was more than fair for what we ordered, and I would consider definitely going back to try more of their menu items, as well as recommending others to give them a try. The service was excellent and the drive through server was all smiles and pleasant. The best part of the meal was the 'sweet plantains' and the beans and rice. The maduros was indeed sweet and perfectly fried to just melt in your mouth. The beans and rice were well seasoned and a good complement to the platanos. I was not crazy about the chicken but that was because it was way too salty for me and definitely not fall off the bone tender. I'm sure some folks like it that way. I also ordered nuggets and they were too crisp outside, salty, and chewy inside. The yucca fries were non existent: besides only having like 5 fries in the package, they were tiny!! Since I picked this up on my drive home, I didn't notice until I was all the way home...if not I would have taken the order back!! read more

Went to the grand opening of the Merrick NY location. Food was tasty, the toppings were missing on my chicken sandwich so that was a bummer. Will have to come back on a normal day and try it again for sure. Taste of food is not as good at the Guatemalan original locations but still tasty. I'd tried the Hempstead store months ago in Door Dash, and thought the chicken was fantastic, so I was eager to try a branch in easy driving distance. Parking was tight, but given that it was the first Saturday of its existence, I expect to have no trouble on future visits. Did I say future visits? I did. I got the three piece lunch with two thighs and a drumstick. Ordering was pleasant and efficient. My one complaint is something that this branch can do nothing about - they should have an option to buy pieces a la carte. I was quite impressed with the speed of food delivery. Went on opening day around 8pm and I was not expecting the crowd, guess I wasn't the only one waiting for opening day, anyways walked in instead of the long line at drive thru. I waited 20 minutes for my food and I was pleasantly surprised. I don't usually like going to pollo campero in the states but Merrick location was def yummy. Their yucca fries are a must!!! We've been going to this location at least 2x a month. We love the food and the clean environment. Customer service was always great except for today. We're asian americans and while I was ordering to stay, the cashier asked for how many plates. I answered 10 plates. The young cashier said 'hijo de puta' under his breath. I was startled and immediately told him that I understood what he said. He just assumed that since we were asians that we would not understand what he said. The cashier did not apologize but said 'You need 10 plates?' I confirmed 10 plates because there were 10 of us (5 adults and 5 kids). Then he proceeded to continue speaking in spanish to his coworker confirming that we need 10 plates. At this point, I was rethinking of just either leaving or to just stay since we were really looking forward to the food. We decided to stay and forget the issue happened. I was very excited to watch our new franchise of Pollo Campero, as it was constructed. It has been open for approximately two weeks and my wife and I just had to get there to eat. It's as wonderful as I had hoped, with delicious chicken. Frankly, it's nice to report that the grilled chicken, with super spices, is clearly better than the fried chicken. And when do I ever get to say that. This chicken is just so flavorful and succulent and no need for extra sauce to dip or anything. But the most wonderful thing about PC is the different and yummy sides, which we never can have at most other fast food places. The plátanos and yucca fries, which really should be added to the regular menu of many many American places. One thing I must say that disappointed me was the flavor of the beans, which are some of my favorite things. There is a flavor in the Campero beans that is not pleasant to me and my wife concurred. Not sure if it's a spice or any other ingredient but it is off putting. And that sucks because it prevents me from enjoying a Campero Bowl in the future. But, in any case, highly recommend the chicken and the yucca and plátanos. And the fresh drinks are refreshing too. Some peach or hibiscus to break from the soda addiction. read more

Avoid this place. I went in for lunch and there was 1 family waiting in line. No one was serving them. We had to wait 10 minutes before they took the first family. Disappointed to say the least. Was there last night and we went inside to order "to go". I ordered the fried chicken bowl and asked if instead of the fried chicken could I have the grilled chicken. The woman taking our order said - no we can't do that - seriously?! They aren't premade. So fine - I ordered just grilled chicken. We sat down waiting for our order. After 20 minutes we walked up asking when our food would be coming out. Turns out they "didn't have any grilled chicken" - WTF! Why didn't they tell us?! Why is this place even open. No matter what time of day you go at 12pm for lunch. 4pm or 7pm for dinner they never have any chicken available and it's always " uh about 10 minutes" Which you know it never is. It would be nice if you could be honest and communicate with the customer. read more

Really impressed with Pollo Campero, friendly staff, food was freash, & delicious.. you order at the counter, then you take a number and sit down they bring the food to you, they have actual silverware, and the plates are a hard plastic which you don't find the typical fast food restaurant, the chicken empanada was crispy just the right amount of Spices, chicken nuggets were excellent . How did with Campero sauce, Which was sweet and tangy I had a side of coleslaw and a dinner roll, The four piece chicken dinner, you can either mix or match I decided to try a wing, a leg thigh in the breast, they give me the option of fried or grilled, I did half-and-half both were very good. Order through Door Dash. Food came in expected time. Was excited to try this place. Well all our chicken was under cooked, all 8 pieces. Cold and pink on the inside so we had to microwave it which dried it out. It turned us off and will not be ordering from here again. Plantains were as good as mine so that's worth 2 stars. Ordered from Merrick on Doordash. The food was subpar at best. The chicken sandwich was very dry and the salads we ordered were extremely salty and the chicken on top of it was again dry. Lastly the sandwiches we ordered were supposed lto come with fries. I'm almost glad they didn't get delivered. I'll start by saying the place is clean and nicely kept. They have a good selection on the menu as well. As for experience, they have a lot to fix. For starters, we came in at 5pm, not a super busy hour for most restaurants. We ordered one 4 piece meal and one order of 9 piece chicken nuggets. We sat at our table for 45 min and saw other tables waiting as well. Some tables even asked for their money back and walked out. A table that came 20 min after us got their entire tray of dark meat. When we asked if they could check our order they told us they ran out of dark meat. Not sure why they didn't tell us this before when they realized they ran out and why they waited for us to approach them. We decided to stay and give what they had available a try. As a "sorry for the wait" they gave us a cup for a free soft drink. As for the food, it was really good and the only reason I would ever come back in the future once they sort out their service issue. The chicken was well cooked and tasted delicious. Went there to get a quick meal tonight... Drive-through and parking lot was jammed but restaurant was pretty much empty except crowd of people waiting to pick pick up online orders... Ordered a four piece meal with two sides and a bottle of water and it came out to almost 20 bucks... I waited 20 minutes in my seat and no food... Waited another 10 minutes and still no food so I asked for a refund... Couldn't understand a person who worked there so it was not easy... Went on a Friday around 4:45/5pm. Place wasn't busy. Drive thru. Order a crispy chicken sandwich combo. Drive up to window and the lady said they are out of all crispy chicken patties and would I like to wait for one. I asked how long and she said 20 minutes. I'm in the drive thru and no, not waiting 20 minutes. 20 minutes for a chicken patty when it's your freaking flagship item? How do you not have that ready to go? So in two seconds, she asks me if I would want something else instead. I told her I'll take empanadas. She tells me drive around the front of building and park and she will bring it to me. 10 minutes later I'm rotting outside waiting. Ignored. I go inside to see what's going on and the staff look at me like I'm crazy. Eventually they get the drive thru girl and she hands me a bag like there is no problem with what just went down. No apology. No extra item as a token of any concern. This place is so full of it with high prices, mediocre food and crappy service. Lots of other places to eat read more
