I few months ago I took my family on a hunting trip close Kyburz. Upon our arrival my boxer fell from a tall rock and unfortunately broke his left rear leg. We arrived around 9pm so needless to say it was a horrible night. The next morning we left and since we are not familiar with the area when we finally got cell phone service we got online and looked for the closest emergency vet. We found several but when I explained our situation nobody would take us in. Pollock Pines Veterinary was the only one that said to bring him in. The break was so severe that it required surgery and unfortunately the surgeon would not be available for at least 3 days. We were able to keep him comfortable with medication given and it almost seemed like he didn't even mind hobbling around with his broken leg on a splint. The ladies that run this facility made every effort to contact every and any other vet hospital from Reno to Sacramento that could attend to him sooner. No one was available for several days. We finished our trip with my boy all busted up but in amazingly good spirits. We were finally referred to a specialist in Sacramento that was able to surgically repair his injury. This was the worse vet I have ever been to. I absolutely will not ever go here again. I read a review (after the fact) how this doctor was very arrogant and condescending. I am here to say they were absolutely correct. I usually dont give my negative opinions on a business . I just chalk it up to a bad experience. But this is one I could not shut up about My dog had eye surgery and he said I took the cone off to early and he would need to do surgery again. It's been about a year and a half and no problem with the eye. I even took her to another vet to make sure. Please do your research on vets. If you care about your pet and dont want to get taken financially then you may want to choose another vet. In conclusion, I will pay anything to fix my dog which is not the point here I think she and I deserve better bedside manners. read more

Dr Perkins, Jennifer and entire staff are incredible. we arrived on vacation realizing we didn't have enough medication for our little dog. panic set it. we went to the hospital and explained the situation. Jennifer calmed us and made an appointment for us. I learned more about the seizure disorder from Dr Perkins during the appointment than had ever been explained before. I wish we could clone him. The experience educated, reassured and helped us so much. we are truly thankful. read more

Well, I had been putting off bringing my senior dog here since I heard mixed reviews from my neighbors, what time wasted. The staff and Dr. Perkins were phenomenal. My dog had a medical emergency over the weekend and they got me in first thing Monday morning. Instead of charging me for tests they thought ahead of what my dog may need from a cardiologist and referred me out. They took the time to advocate for my dog to get her a same day appointment with a cardiologist, they confirmed the cardiologist's office could do x-rays and a blood panel so they wouldn't have to double charge me for that service. I cannot thank them enough for putting my dog's health first and thinking about the financial stress this puts on my pockets. Appreciate this mornings visit tremendously. read more

I cannot say enough about Pollock Pines Veterinary Hospital and their staff. Not only has every normal visit as a new patient been great, but when I had a medical emergency with my sister's dog that I was watching, they agreed to help her pup (with my sister's permission). I knew something was wrong, but was not prepared for the life-or-death situation it was going to turn into. They had agreed to see her not long before closing, and when it was determined it was serious, Doctor Perkins and their staff stayed until a game plan was reached, that would not only save her life, but also buy time so that the cost of the life-saving surgery needed could be done at a non-emergency vet clinic--the emergency vet was going to charge $8000!! Because Doctor Perkins was able to stabilize her, my sister was able drive up and get her pup back home to her vet where the surgery was a fraction of the cost. Had they not taken the time to help her get stable after hours, she would have died because there was no way my sister could have been able to afford $8000. Not only did they all go above and beyond in that case, but the following day, which was Doctor Perkin's day-off, he came in to recheck my sister's dog to make sure she was improving and stable enough for the 7 hour drive. I literally cannot thank them enough!! Their kindness and compassion made all the difference in this situation and thanks to them, my sister's dog is alive and healthy today!! read more

My 4 month old poodle was having trouble holding her bladder. I saw signs that she might be suffering from a UTI. Dr Perkins was out of town and I had an appointment for the next morning. When his plans changed and he came home earlier than expected, his office called and had me come in a day early. Testing proved my guess was right and he started her on antibiotics. By the next day I could tell she was already feeling better. What struck me that afternoon at his office is that several of his patients that were considered in need of his immediate care were also called in. He could have left his schedule the way it was and we could have gone to an emergency vet or make our pets wait until the next day. But he didn't. That's dedication. He had spent his day traveling and then came into his office to care for our pets. I am truly grateful and if my baby girl understood, she would be too. read more

Our 19 year old kitty, Fluff, was in a bad way. The Pollock Pines Veterinary Hospital was able to see her the same day I called. Dr. Perkins and his staff were extremely compassionate assisting our Fluff cross over the Rainbow Bridge peacefully. I am so glad we found Pollock Pines Veterinary Hospital !! I cannot stress enough how welcome they made us feel from our initial phone conversations, throughout the visit and into our pet's aftercare. Our pet had a semi urgent issue and needed to be seen soon. A few other vets told us they were 30 days out for new clients and we should take our pet to urgent care down the hill. Pollock pines had a cancellation that day and told us to bring our pet right in. They were very thorough and even had great wellness plans available to make it affordable. We arrived and they took care of her immediately, gave a quote and did surgery. More importantly he took the time to throughly explain what she needed and why! She ended up needing more work then the Dr. originally thought so he just did it and didn't change my estimate price! What an amazing thing to do! We have a small 6 1/2 pound Chihuahua 11 years old. Our lives pretty much revolve around him, as I've told Dr. Perkins there's not much we wouldn't do for this dog. After an extensive blood panel we found out that he has pancreatitis on top of a heart murmur. We see a cardiologist in Sacramento every six months who has told us not to let him lose any more weight. Dr. Perkins put him on a low fat, veterinary gastrointestinal diet for life. The food really helped his pancreatitis and with a follow up blood test found his numbers to be back to normal per Dr. Perkins. Having to keep the weight on him, we have tried to find out which food he seems to like the most within the low fat, veterinary, gastrointestinal dog food choices. There aren't a lot of flavors or brands for this type of food. I would order it on Chewy and each time I had to get authorization from Dr. Perkins office. It got to be very challenging. Sometimes 10 days would go by and we could not get verification for the dog food. Dr. Perkins put our dog on that diet, so I went in to talk to the receptionist at Pollock Pines vet and she checked with Dr. Perkins. He would only authorize the one brand with only two flavors, one of which our pet didn't particularly care for, so he has started losing weight, which the cardiologist didn't want to happen. However, Dr. Perkins didn't seem to care about much other than me buying the dog food from him. I spoke with two other vets and they don't understand where he's coming from. Unfortunately, I will have to move on to a vet that will take into consideration all his medical issues as well as our concerns. I'm sure Dr. Perkins would be fine for normal office visits, but my major problem is that I really need somebody that will work with me and not be focused on selling his in-house dog food. read more

Had a visit this week for annual vax and allergies. It was a very disappointing visit. After almost a 45 minute wait the vet came in with an apology which was appropriate and sincere. However, his physical exam of my pup was not done in my presence in the exam room. Everything shots, and exam were in the back room. I give credit to the vet tech who was extremely pleasant and in the waiting period suggested she take my pup back and get the bad started. They found an ear infection in one of her ears. So the vet came in for the time it took to explain and had me compare ears. After which the vet tech returned with the medications and showed me how to administer the ear med. then gave me Prednisone with administration instructions written on bottle. What upsets me the most is in reviewing my bill a box is checked saying I did not ask for information on the drug. I WAS never asked. After a day of being on this drug she was drinking excessive amounts of water, as well as urinating. I started to read the side effects and was upset. I'm very cautious about the chemicals I place in her body. Allergies I was given by my CO bet a natural med. There was never an explanation given as to why such a STRONG drug was necessary. As I read uses it was for much more complicated conditions. Not ear infections. All in all going to look for another vet. read more

Good Riddance to Pollock Pines Veterinary Had been taking my German Shepherd here for about 2yrs. The vet and his staff have always been very nice, responsive, and knowledgeable. I was happy with the care my dog has received up until now I had x-rays scheduled for my dog today, but I had a question as to the cost and asked the vet if he could rationalize the price structure. (a half-day stay, anesthesia, recovery, and 1 x-ray was $200. adding 2 more x-rays almost doubled the cost to $374). It seemed confusing why the additional films would increase the cost so much. Anyway, when asked about the pricing, he asked me "Are you a Radiologist?" and then continued by telling me: "...let me cut to the chase, the price is the price. You just need to select how many x-rays you want". I opted to leave instead. Anyway, I'm sure he is a very competent vet, but terrible at customer service. Not another dollar of mine will ever go to this guy. So, if you are the type of person who enjoys being talked down to, and prefers to accept any price without questions, then this place is for you. read more

I like that he received his schooling from UCDavis (one of the top 3 in the country) which has also given him the the knowledge to take on our cat Mack that is having health problems. Most of the staff there is caring and upbeat. Although I have seen them be compassionate when an animal dies even as far as hugging the family and cryin. I've been taking our two small dogs, Emily, a Shih Zhu, and Bella, a Havanese, to Pollock Pines Veterinary for about 8 months now. They are incredible and caring! The doctor always takes lots of time with explaining everything and the prices are reasonable. I could not think of a better place to take your cats or dogs! I give them a 15 out of 10 rating! We also use the boarding service frequently and they treat our girls like they are family! Please! Trust me! These people are the best!!! read more

We were out of town camping when our dog slipped into a coma. I called them and they said to come in. I was surprised when we got there that someone would actually meet us outside the door and take our dog immediately. This was our worst experience at this clinic. While we were away for the weekend we boarded our dog Diesel, whilst we were there they had told us they could give him a bath, so we said they could but he didn't really need it. They said nothing about giving him any vaccines or that he needed any vaccines. We just came back and they told us they gave him 2 shots, THEY DIDNT EVEN TELL US! Its not even about the shots, its about the fact that they gave our dog shots without our consent! However, it does state that if the animal needs any vaccines they have the right to give him the vaccines, but again I was told that he didn't need any vaccines. They also gave him a bath, which was fine at the time but they charged us 66$ FOR A BATH! They lost his leash, which isn't a big deal we can buy him another leash but they still lost his leash. We are never coming here again and this is a warning to pet owners about this clinic and the things they did behind our backs. read more

This veterinary is very close to where I live. I came here when my cat was losing hair on her ears and we weren't sure what was going on with her. The prices were very reasonable and the vets and assistants were all very polite and knowledgeable. They were very considerate of us and our money. I was pregnant at the time and they knew that it would be hard to get certain things done for my cat because it would be very costly. They explained everything thorough for my husband and I and came up with different ideas to help our cat but also help us save money. I highly recommend Pollock Pines Vet Hospital. Dr. Perkins and his staff are caring, compassionate and willing to go the extra mile for good care. We have a lot of animals, several of whom have had challenging situations (a cat with heart disease, a dog who required 3 knee/ACL surgeries, another dog with seizures, and a cat with a strange ear issue), and he provided thoughtful care for all of them. We moved out of the area and though happy with our new vet hospital, I will miss the Pollock Pines Vet Hospital staff! If you haven't gone there yet, you should check it out. The place is so great! i had to take my dog in after she was coughing up blood and was due to have her puppies. As I took my dog in, Dr. Perkins knew she was very sick and told us they had to do a C-Section. well little did I know my dog was dying. Dr. Perkins not only saved my dog but he saved every single one of the puppies. he saved my dog and all the puppies were healthy. He found what was wrong with my dog and gave my dog meds and now my dog is happy and extremely happy! and her puppies are all healthy! he saved my dog and 11 puppies. I have seen him save many dogs and cats from life threatening situations. He does things in a calmly matter and was patience with the owners and staff. He is an excellent doctor and knows exactly what he is doing. very experienced and tries his best and everything he can to help your furry friend and make them comfortable whether it is a vaccine or check up to a serious surgery. read more

After the last experience (where the hospital made a mistake that could have been deadly and refused to correct it without charging me more money - let alone apologize), I now take my three dogs to Pleasant Valley Pet Clinic, who are great! Dr. Perkins is the most patient, skilled and compassionate Veterinarians, I have ever had the pleasure of taking my animals to. I am a Breeder of AKC Bichons and CKC Morkies. Dr. Perkins has been my animals Vet for years. His care also included a couple of litters of pups! Dr. Perkins was always very good to explain the situation that was going on with my pet(s) and answered all of our questions in a relaxed professional manner. I was never rushed. I found Dr. Perkins and his staff always there to help me, no matter what was needed and no matter what time of the day. On several different occasions, I had to call the Dr. in the night, and/or on weekends. Dr. Perkins was always prompt to return my call, even when he was out of town for a family wedding. He also offered to meet me after hours on a weekend at his clinic if needed. Unfortunately, I no longer live in the Pollock Pines area. I have been to several veterinary clinics in my new location. I keep looking and going to new clinics because none of the vets can meet the high level of care given to my animals and me as Dr. Perkins did. In fact, I recently called Dr. Perkins with questions I had about my little Morkie who was diagnosed with breast cancer. The staff was very helpful and offered to have the Dr. call me back. He was quick to respond and gave me the advice I needed. Even though I offered to pay for his advice he kindly refused. If you are looking for a new Vet, give the Pollock Pines Vet Hospital Family a try. You will not be sorry and your pet will thank you. read more

I have boarded my 7 pound, but very long haired show dog several times over a 5 year period. I always deliver him with his own food bagged per meal, and very clearly printed simple instructions: one meal per day, NO grooming, hair or nail trimming, no bathing, etc. Originally we had a problem with them calling my emergency-only phone number with attempts at selling extra services which I had already declined, and over charging me by using a weight of 50 or more pounds for the daily rate calculation. I picked him up a few days ago, and was surprised and horrified to see that a big chunk of hair had been cut off behind one rear leg, about 3 inches in length. The office manager (Lisa?) answered my complaint with a speech about what good care they took of him, how they are very careful to follow my instructions, and that nobody there was responsible for cutting his hair off. I would have been satisfied with an honest explanation of what happened and an apology. You should also know that this facility requires at least 2 vaccinations for boarding that no other facilities require, and which are actually only stocked by one other animal hospital in the area. read more

I took my niece's cat to Dr. Perkins to be put down. I wanted to be sure we had come to a proper decision so I explained all that the cat had been through in the past year and asked what his thoughts were. Further explaining, if it was a simple solution of medication, then we were happy to go that route, but didn't want to put the cat through more pain. His response was "Oh, so now we are going to have an office visit?" After paying $200 for an injection to euthanize a 6 pound cat, I didn't think it was too much to ask him to check her out first. He refused and said, "without a full exam, he wouldn't be able to tell me much." Well, ultimately we went through with our decision knowing it really was the right thing to do. But his attitude was about time is money, not about caring for the animal. Then to top it off, we received a sympathy card from the office. All the staff, EXCEPT THE DR, signed it....does he really think people don't notice. read more
