Super nice servers! Took a photo of the pricing for next time. Love the variety of options!

While they were closure over a year because they got fired and remodeling. After reopening they started serving lunch buffet. First time we had lunch buffet there and pretty much enjoyed. Food was I would say "decent" but not terrible like a P- express. Lunch only served buffet and dinner served only from menu. Buffet selection is not big just about 10-12 items. I miss Chinese buffet in Seattle we used to live there. So much selection including oysters, crab and huge dessert section, but this is Hilo so I can't compare with them. Waitress says few things changed everyday but mostly very basic stuff. I loved Ginger Chicken ( chilled ) and Salt & Pepper Shrimp da best. All server are friendly and considerate. If I had to say few things, I'd say would be better if there were more soup and desserts. I really want to try their "Duck" next time when I go to dinner.

Anti-Climatic. Best way to describe it. Food was average. The Chow Fun we order was better than the last place we went to. The food wasn't overly seasoned. The egg rolls were standard. Bok Choy was good, but not great. The biggest disappointment was the Sizzling beef Platter. When the dish is called 'Sizzling' you expect the dish to come out sizzling. It wasn't. It was the biggest let down, because you're expecting for a show. The beef was chunky. The tendons and fat between the meat was chewy and the vegetables weren't even sizzling. They were pretty much raw. It wasn't a terrible place. The staff was nice, but I don't think I'll go out of my way to drive all the way here again. Parking was crowded, meaning narrow spaces. It was a bit tight driving through the parking lot too.

    General chicken! Mmmmmm

Great place, but from the street it looks like it's empty. Looked at their menu and said I've got to try it. What a surprise! Their general chicken was delicious and appetizers were very pleasing. The staff are friendly family ran and operated. I would have all the employees park on the front so it looks like it's busy during the day. At night the parking lot looks active. It's a surprise and delightful to eat here. Bathrooms are clean and accessible for handicap. My new favorite Chinese food destinations.

The food we ordered was generally excellent--the kau yuk and cake noodles in particular. Generous portions as well.

Crack seed. For us…read morelocals in Hawai'i, these snacks were childhood staples. The crack seed store, a classic place where vibes of nostalgia are generated every time I walk into one. 'Cause I grew-up with li hing mui and arare. There's a small number of locally-owned crack seed shops on the Big Island of Hawai'i and in Hawai'i in general. This is one of them, the "local-style candy store" for an island boy like me. I enter 5-Spice, located in East Hawai'i after the intersection of Kilauea Ave and W Puainako St, heading south. I remember frequenting this business when it used to be at Puainako Town Center. Their popularity over the years gave them the ability to move to a larger space. Now independently located in their own building with ample parking. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Would I be able to control myself, holding onto what's desired without adding anything extra? It's always impossible for me to do so. Everytime. Yummy preserved items in large display jars, others placed in vacuum sealed bags. All priced by-the-ounce. I become curious, wanting to taste it again. I go to my favorites, seeking them first while browsing through the visual display of many others. Cracked seed goodness on one side, bagged candies and sweets on the other. I've seen this all before yet, I stand still with the desire to place it all in my hands. And I sure do, my hands are full. I mail them to the U.S. mainland in care packages, travel to the neighbor-islands as omiyage, and personally enjoy them at work or at home as snacks. They make great gifts for friends and coworkers too. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Let's talk about food, where mouth-watering plates and yummy burgers are prepared. Bentos are packed to-go on the countertop. Offering an extensive menu for a take-out, all made to enjoy outside on picnic tables or elsewhere. Daily specials are available along with catering + platters too. Front service by the team at the counter is pleasant, attentive. Gratitude is always extended for every purchase. Comfortable, courteous, welcoming. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ "Meat Jun Plate" A light egg batter and thinly sliced beef served in an upscale fashion due to care in preparation and quality of flavor. The soft and indulgent texture of each meat jun piece, perfectly seasoned + cooked. Your choice of tossed greens, purple sweet potato or macaroni salad. "Honey Chicken Plate" Featuring a crazy yummy sweet and savory glaze, sticky and glossy. This sauce, this recipe creation is glorious. Chicken pieces are tender yet slightly crispy on the exterior. "Bibimbap" Freshly made Korean banchan, thinly sliced seasoned beef over white rice. I pour the gochujang over everything and mix-in the sunny side egg, bringing forward a creamy texture along with heat + depth. Choose the sweet potato salad as your side. "Gravy Burger Combo w/ French Fries" This massive burger patty is filling, satisfying. Charred and smothered in rich brown gravy served with lettuce and mayo. Choose the sweet bread bun, the seasoned salt on their fries makes all the difference. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Delicious food to-go with generous portions, sealed bags of cracked seed items + sweet treats at 5-Spice. For enjoyment at home, to share at work, gifts or omiyage. Find this charm, this unique and tasty experience on the Big Island of Hawai'i - East side. Locally owned and operated.

There were various options for everyone and easy ordering on the kiosk with pictures, which was super helpful. The dining area is spacious and breezy. I got a green river and portugese sausage loco moco, which are two of my favorite things! A lot of places don't have green river, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it being sold here. The Portuguese sausage was juicy and the gravy was the perfect consistency for the loco moco. I loved how many different meat options they had for their loco mocos. Definitely recommend coming here for a quick bite!

As a born-and-raised local, rice, gravy, and eggs will win me over every time, and I really wanted to love this place for the history alone. I'll be honest though -- the hype set the bar high, and I left a little let down. The regular loco moco was just okay. The hamburger patty tasted pre-made or frozen, though the gravy was solid (thank goodness). The beef stew also tasted pre-made and was lighter on the tomato flavor than I prefer. I ordered the steak as well (around $30), and it came out very well done. On the positive side, they offer a ton of plate lunch options, the space is extremely well kept for a local diner, and there's plenty of parking. It's covered outdoor seating only, but it's comfortable and clean. What surprised me most was the lack of visible history. I expected to see more storytelling about the loco moco origins -- photos, signage, staff sharing pride in it -- something that really leaned into that legacy. It felt a little missing. Still glad I tried it for the experience, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the legendary reputation.

The waitress spoke really soft and was cool and collected. I ordered the fried chicken thighs with Lilikoi sauce, brown rice, and a side salad. My husband got the lite bite curry with brown rice and a side salad. Water and coffee were served in custom White Guava tumblers. We each got a Hawaiian roll with a delicious Lilikoi butter. To my surprise, the side salad was a full generous portion, not the tiny side salad that restaurants usually give. It was a proper salad with fresh local greens, sliced cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, and another white shredded vegetable that I think was radish. My chicken was delicious and the portion of that was generous as well. I tasted my husband's curry but didn't really like the flavor. It was different, like a sweeter flavor than other curries I've tried before. Overall, I'd definitely come back. I enjoyed the large salad and all the Lilikoi things - butter, dressing, and sauce.

But they literally had so many boxes stored there, like they're in the middle of something and this is the only place with room. In the kitchen, there's stacks of pans, like there's no storage room in there either. Fine, whatever. We order chicken sandwich with no cheese and a salad and one teri burger, but they're out. Ok, fine, get a regular cheese burger with pepper Jack cheese and side fries. Then we realize that we're running out of time, and ask to get the food to go - OUR BAD. We go up after the server asks the cook to package our food for take out, and you'd swear we just canceled the order. He started throwing our food in boxes and the boxes on the counter. MY GUY, IT WAS NOT BUSY. one table was as waiting to be seated and no one else was waiting on food. I get it, he could be having a bad day, or his cat is sick, but like, it's an open kitchen. So then, we get to our food. The buns were with the meat, causing both of our buns to be soggy, like falling apart. I get it. He could have packaged it all differently, but I know those to-go containers are not the greatest for the environment, so that must have been the factor. But the beef patty and chicken... they were large, so we were really looking forward to them. But they were so bland. Not even salt or pepper, no sauce, garlic powder, nothing. I couldn't even chop up the chicken for my salad, as I was only given a singular half ounce container of dressing. They do have Girl Scout cookies for sale, and I'm sure those would be fine.
