Stopped in for lunch. This was my 2nd visit. I got a spinach and feta croissant which was yummy. There are several different things to choose from and the prices can't be beat. Last time, I had the spicy shrimp Nolache which is like a bun with spicy shrimp inside. It was yummy too. There are a lot of drinks on the menu but since I'm not really into coffee and tea I didn't order anything to drink. The food is fresh and so affordable that you can get a couple of different things if you want. Parking can be a challenge, there are a handful of spaces in front of Chef but I'm not sure if there are others on the other sides of the building. There were several people sitting working on their laptops so the atmosphere must stay fairly calm and I imagine there is free wifi. I'll be back to try something else soon. read more

This place is convenient for me to get to, and the few experiences I've had there have been great. They have their "Nolaches", aka Kolaches, in an impressive selection. The muffin and pastry selection is fresh and delicious, and the service is fast and friendly. The reason I'm giving them four stars instead of five is because I don't feel any particular way about their coffee. I've had their drip coffee, as well as the cold brew, and it got the job done. I left full of caffeine. Probably Starbucks level-- not particularly amazing, but consistent at least! It is by far the best coffee shop in the neighborhood though, and their food selection is amazing, so I'll definitely be going back. read more

Best coffee shop located in the heart of Gentilly. Front door to Indian Village, where lots of nice and friendly people live. That place is decorated very nice. Artwork is something to see. Prices are very reasonable and everything is sooooo delicious. You are always welcome by warm and friendly people. I have never tasted decaf coffee that was so flavorful. Great way to start a day. Great local coffee shop! I have been here several times and every time the coffee is consistently delicious and the pastries are warm and flavorful! The staff is always polite and willing to offer advice if you're being indecisive as I often am! They have ample seating for you to sit and enjoy your drink or do some work it have a meeting with friends. Although I wish they had a drive thru, I appreciate that they do have a decent amount of parking so it's still pretty convenient! I adore the almond croissants and the kolaches! Coffee: Capp and mocha were watery and tasted like the milk was steamed too long so it was burnt rather than sweet. The iced latte was also pretty bland so maybe they just had a bad day and didn't calibrate the shots during the morning shift. Operations: They are using a Mazzer Robur (pretty sure it isn't the Major) for the decaf grind while using a Mazzer Super Jolly for the main espresso work. That's fine and all but I bet you could speed up drink operations as you grow and get better flavors out of the coffee if you used the nicer grinder for the work and kept the SJ for decaf. Baked goods: I'd come again juat for the food. This is where the coffee shop shines in my opinion. The crawfish and the sausage/egg sandwiches had great flavor, heated to the perfect temp, and seasoned well. read more

You can't go wrong getting anything from Pontilly, they roast all their coffee on-site in small batches so you know it's some good stuff. The good atmosphere, friendly folks, prompt service, and delicious coffee really help me get the morning off to a great start. I'm happy they're in the neighborhood. The coffee was decent, but there really were not many pastries to choose from, so I passed on those. As I now understand it, the shop supports the mission work of Bethel Community Baptist Church which operates Christian-oriented drug and alcohol rehab programs in the area. While I am a fan of businesses with a social mission, there is virtually no mention of this connection inside the shop, which I find a little strange. Now, back to the coffee shop. The employees here are some of the kindest, outgoing folks I have ever met at a coffee shop. The interior of the shop is nice, with lots of tables for socializing or buckling down with work or studying. That's where the positives end. The coffee isn't very good. I love everything about this place. I'm never disappointed with anything. The hot sausage and cheese nolache is my favorite. And if you want a pick me up, the holy spirit is great. The place helps bring in money for Bethel, a recovery center that uses religion as a basis for alcohol and substance recovery. This is the best coffee shop accessible to the Gentilly neighborhood. The pastries are good, their breakfast grit bowl is really good. I'm not the hugest fan of their coffee, but that doesn't seem to really stop me from going. This is a good place to work since it's right across the street from my school. The coffee is great almost like district donuts coffee and way better than pjs. They serve hot sausage breakfast items in the morning! Who does that? Apparently me. Then they have this loyalty program for people like me who come all the time and I'm pretty close to my free coffee.
