I'd heard about Poor Calvin's during the pandemic and had been wanting to try it ever since. I was finally in the area with a friend and we decided to stop in. Let's just say, I already know I'll be back! The restaurant is on the smaller side, but it packs a serious punch when it comes to both the food and service. Our server, Ariel (like the mermaid, and hopefully I'm spelling her name correctly!), was fantastic from beginning to end. She shared some of the history behind the restaurant and its owner, walked us through the menu, and gave us some amazing recommendations. Her service really added to the overall experience. We originally came in for appetizers and drinks, but one thing led to another and we ended up staying for dessert. We tried the fried frog legs, lobster crawfish wontons, and spring rolls. The spring rolls were probably our least favorite of the three, but those lobster crawfish wontons? Easily my favorite appetizer. I already know I'll be ordering them every time I visit. The fried frog legs were also really good. Yes, they actually do taste similar to chicken! Ariel recommended eating them with the roti bread and dipping sauce that comes with the dish, and she was absolutely right. Eating everything together took the dish to another level. And then came dessert. We ordered the apple empanadas, which were perfect for sharing since the order came with two. They were served with fresh strawberries and homemade ice cream, and this dessert was SO good. Ariel told us the ice cream is specially made for Poor Calvin's by Morelli's, and the entire combination was the perfect ending to our meal. It's been a few days since my visit and I'm still thinking about the food and the overall experience. Poor Calvin's has officially made my list of favorite restaurants. The atmosphere feels intimate and would be perfect for a date night, girls' night, or even a solo dinner at the bar. On my way out, I also noticed they have patio seating, which I would definitely take advantage of on a cooler Atlanta evening. My only complaint from the entire visit was the gnats. There were several flying around our table during the meal, which was definitely annoying and took away from an otherwise excellent dining experience. With a restaurant and food this good, I would have loved not having to swat gnats away while eating. Aside from that, it's been a few days since my visit and I'm still thinking about the food and overall experience. Poor Calvin's has officially made my list of favorite restaurants. The food was memorable, Ariel's service was excellent, and there are already several things I want to come back and try.
Made dinner reservations via Open Table. Used the complimentary Valet for parking. Once inside my party was already waiting. The inside space is small but intimate. We were at a 2-top table. Ariel was an amazing server! Very knowledgeable about the menu. Our appetizers were so delicious. We got the Lobster Crawfish Wontons and Vietnamese Seafood Spring Rolls. For our entrees we ordered the Seafood Curry and Fried Chicken with lobster mac and cheese and collards. The dessert stole the show. The new Toasted Poundcake was absolutely delightful. It was green in color and very moist. Server with a gingerbread ice cream and topped with strawberries and banana fosters. I enjoyed every bite. I also got the Chocolate Ganache Cake Togo.
I've been wanting to come here for years now and I'm so glad I finally got the chance. The food is exquisite. Every dish, from the appetizers to the entrees, was delicious and well worth the cost. You can't go wrong and you can tell just how fresh the ingredients are. The service was on point with the waiter offering suggestions and constantly checking on us and refilling our waters.
This was a great spot to have a special birthday dinner. It's chef run so the dishes are unique and different (in a good way)! The portion sizes were also quite filling, which is nice given the price point is a bit higher. The service was impeccable, and it really made this feel like a great dining out experience.
I finally treated myself to Poor Calvin's after hearing about it for years. It's honestly a little embarrassing it took me this long, but I'm one of those people who hears about a restaurant and somehow doesn't make it there until years later. I ordered several dishes to get a good feel for the menu. Ordered: * Crab Beignets * Lobster & Scallop Drunken Noodles * Lobster Mac & Cheese * Midnight Sticky Ribs Overall, I'd give it 4 out of 5. The presentation was excellent, and I can definitely see why it's become an Atlanta favorite. However, I don't think the food fully lives up to the reputation it's built over the last decade. The crab beignets were the clear standout. They were creative, unique, and easily my favorite dish. The lobster and scallop drunken noodles and lobster mac & cheese were both flavorful, but not as memorable as I expected. My biggest disappointment was the midnight sticky ribs. They had good flavor but were noticeably overcooked and drier than I've ever had. I still think Poor Calvin's is worth trying because it's a unique part of Atlanta's food scene. I just left feeling that the food was comparable to several other great Asian fusion restaurants around the city rather than being in a league of its own. Just my two cents. Went here for a birthday and had a wonderful time with wonderful food!! To start our servers were very friendly and Jojo was very knowledgeable of the entire menu, including describing the daily specials and the flavors/ingredients of each dish we ordered. To start we got the lobster crawfish wontons and the seafood spring rolls. The lobster crawfish wontons have a Cajun cream cheese inside which was a flavor bomb, and the wontons were fried crispy but not oily. The sauce on top helped to cut through the richness of the wonton stuffing. It was a delicious appetizer!! The seafood spring rolls were massive, again a really good fry on them with the skin being thin and super crunchy but not overdone. The seafood inside was generous, but I would say the flavor was more just of the seafood itself instead of any special seasoning. Still good, but we preferred the wontons more! The mains were the lobster fried rice and the drunken noodles. The lobster fried rice had a gochujang flavoring but didn't have as much of a wok sear in my opinion, but was still good! The lobster was fried beautifully, where the meat was super soft and the fry on the outside was crunchy! It also came with these fried kale chips that were sooooo good, these chips had so much flavor!! My favorite was the drunken noodles, which had a lot of flavor from the wok sear and a slightly sweet and spicy sauce. We asked for chili on the side, and definitely think the added heat made this dish much more flavorful. The lobster here was also really good and well buttered! For dessert, we shared the matcha crème Brulee which was fantastic, strong matcha flavor that was tempered with the creaminess of crème Brulee. The torched sugar on top was superrrr well done, super crunchy and probably one of the best sugar torching on crème Brulee I have had!! In between each item, Jojo would clean our plates and table, and we saw him also ensuring everyone's dish was cooked to their liking. Everyone seemed to really care about the quality of the food and it made for a really nice experience! I would say the ambiance is dim lit casual to upscale, great for work events, date nights, etc. Overall a great place for flavor packed food with exceptional service!
This was absolutely a 10/10 experience. I was staying at the Marriott Downtown for a work trip and desperately needed to catch up with my friend and eat before heading to bed. I wasn't expecting much from this place but it was the perfect gem. I wasn't expecting much able to make a last minute reservation online and we were seated immediately. The waiter was professional and so friendly--he literally knew every little thing about each dish. He provided some great recommendations and we decided to order the lobster crawfish wontons, the crispy beef, the drunken noodle with scallops and lobster tail, and the sticky ribs. I easily could have eaten all the wontons myself and the drunken noodles came large lobster tails and plenty of scallops. I ate these so fast that I forgot to take a picture. The crispy beef was a little bit on the sweeter side but it was the perfect amount of crunch and sauce that paired well with the vegetables and jasmine rice. I also really enjoyed the ribs--they were very tender and flavorful. It came with collard greens which I didn't enjoy as much but the other dishes were so good and I ate so much that I didn't mind. I also saw plenty of couples celebrating milestones together so it definitely makes for a cute night out if you're in the area looking to have a nice dinner with your partner. I hope to be back to Atlanta soon so that I can indulge again.
This is such an amazing place and I'm glad I got a chance to come back to it. The service and ambiance is perfect for date night or friends night out or to celebrate a special occasion. Definitely get reservations ahead. Our server was fantastic and very attentive. The food is Asian fusion and it never disappoints. We got the vegetarian options which are limited so plan ahead. Appetizers with tofu was cooked to perfection soft on the inside crunchy on the outside. The Savior beignets were cheesy and melted in your mouth. For the main course we tried a Mediterranean pasta. Which was chef recommended as the other options are meat or seafood heavy. Their menu changes often so definitely try this spot. They have a valet available
I was told that this was a wonderful place. You must use the valet service. The service here is spectacular. Waiter recommended the Lobster fried rice so that is what I got. The lobster was a little chewy and fried hard. The green side was crispy but cooler than room temperature. The food tasted food but not worth the hype. Next time, I will grab a drink and order something different.
My husband and I were in Atlanta attending a conference and doing some research when we came across Poor Calvin's online. We intentionally avoided reading reviews because we wanted to form our own opinion, and we're so glad we did. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed warmly by the host, which immediately set the tone for a great dining experience. Once seated, our waiter was attentive, personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely seemed to care that we enjoyed our meal. The food was outstanding, the drinks were excellent. Poor Calvin's delivered from start to finish. If you're visiting Atlanta or you're a local looking for a restaurant that combines exceptional food with outstanding hospitality, Poor Calvin's is well worth the visit. We left with absolutely no complaints and look forward to returning the next time we're in Atlanta.
Another year, another visit to Poor Calvin's. Once again went as part of a larger group. The front of house staff is very welcoming. The menu here is very nice. I think our host ordered one of everything on the starters menu. Everything I tried was great. They once again made me a smoked Old Fashioned. For my main course I had lobster, duck, bok choy, and mashed potatoes. It was delicious. Finished the evening with an espresso martini.
I enjoyed the atmosphere upon entering. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and recommended several dishes. We got the lobster wontons which were really good. For the main the lobster fried rice was amazing and even better the next day. The other main was fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and greens. The greens had a tangy flavor that was different but tasty. The drinks were also good. My only issue was the valet. The parking lot was too small and they kept moving my car to get other cars in. We watched them from the window continue to move my car which was in a parking space and bend the side mirrors back when they are automatic. One window was out the other was back. It was weird and the guys acted oblivious to the issue.
After long sessions at work, I was recommended to Calvin's by a close friend. When we arrived, we were seated immediately, even without a reservation. The vibe and ambiance of the place were fantastic, even though it is a small, closely-packed restaurant. Our waiter was extremely friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and took note of my allergies. I tried the Long Island; it was three drinks in one, with a spice that made it stand out. For dinner, I had chicken with lobster and greens. Mac was a little spicy, but mixing it with the greens worked well because they were sweet. I definitely will return to Calvin's; I can't call him poor because the prices are not low.
Poor Calvin's is a popular spot in Atlanta. It's where Southern Comfort and Asian Fusion come together. I've been there a few times, but this was my first time writing a review. My husband has been wanting to try Poor Calvin's for a while, so we finally went last Friday night. We decided to sit outside since the weather was cool and the vibe was chill. Since I have a nut allergy, my options were pretty limited, but our server did a great job highlighting what I could have. We started with cocktails. I had a lychee martini and my husband went with the Jasmine Manhattan. Both drinks were really well made; I don't think you can go wrong with anything on their menu. Their cocktails are perfectly crafted. For entrees, we ordered the Drunken Noodle Scallops and Lobster Tail with Shrimp, Duck Dynasty and Lobster Tail, and lobster mac and cheese. The food arrived quickly, and honestly, we're still thinking about how good it was. We're already planning our next visit. If you're in Atlanta or just visiting, definitely check this place out. As a Vietnamese American, I truly loved the combination of flavors I experienced at Poor Calvin's. We got several of the appetizers to split and that was more than enough for us at our table. The Shaky Garlic Shrimp was one of the best dishes I've had in Atlanta! So much so that we ordered a second order of the Shrimp! They have complimentary valet and I recommend making a reservation before arriving. The staff was great and the place is nice to have a conversation. read more

Came here for a friend's birthday dinner. The valet is complementary but be sure to tip the people. TJ was our sever and he was great. His drink suggestions were perfect. I had a lemon drop that did not disappoint. We ordered so many appetizers and OMG, ya girl was happy. Food wise I was totally concerned because of my Crohns but TJ spoke to the chef and they got me right. I was super pleased and. The red velvet for dessert set the night off. The quality and care that Chef Calvin is pumping out of that kitchen is anything but "poor". The articulate summation of Asian and Southern cuisine could renamed this establishment to Rich Calvin. Came here for a birthday celebration I was invited to and I was thrilled because this has been high on my list of restaurants to try. It's safe to say it lived up to expectations. It's a somewhat tight -room establishment which creates a more intimate experience. Along with it being dimly lit, it creates a vibe that I really enjoy. The food and drinks here are sensational and you're unlikely to select something you don't like. The whole party ordered different items and we were able to sample each other's plates and were all thoroughly impressed. Service here was great. read more

I know this is an Atlanta staple, but the service here is phenomenal. Ashley knew the menu top to bottom and gave us great recommendations for appetizers, drinks, dinner and dessert. While the atmosphere lends itself to Midtown casual, we were probably underdressed, so we chose to dine on the patio. Ashley started us with an appetizer that wasn't on the menu: a Wagyu dumpling in a coconut cream and Wagyu broth. Earthy yet elegant. For drinks we had a Paloma with equal parts Mezcal and Anejo tequila, and a boozy rum punch made with 5 different kinds of rum. Our main entrees were the Chilean sea bass and the spicy Thai basil grouper over vegetables with jasmine rice. Beautifully done. Dessert. Look at the picture. The best way to describe dessert is that a peach cobbler empanada dipped itself in cinnamon sugar (like a churro) and cozied up to homemade strawberry ice cream with strawberry sauce and lavender whipped cream. A Longtime Favorite in Atlanta: Poor Calvin's I realized this is a long overdue review for Poor Calvin's because this place has been part of my Atlanta dining rotation for years. The first time I went had to be around 2016 or 2017 when I was working for Revolution Foods out of Oakland and attending a conference in Atlanta. I found Poor Calvin's on OpenTable, took a few colleagues, and wow--what a find. Since then, every single time I'm back in Atlanta, I try to book a table. And these days, that's easier said than done because this place is wildly popular--and for good reason. Atlanta's food scene is serious, and Poor Calvin's absolutely holds its own. I feel like I've eaten and drank my way through most of the menu over the years, especially the seafood dishes and the shareable plates. The quality and presentation are always on point. The lobster fried rice may sound simple, but trust me--it is anything but. It's one of those dishes you keep thinking about long after the trip is over. Yes, it is on the pricier side, so I'll be honest about that. But everything I've had there has been worth it. When we go, we take our time. We order in courses. We enjoy the experience. They have a full bar, and the cocktails are just as creative as the food. The restaurant itself feels like dining inside a beautifully reimagined house, with separate rooms, whimsical décor, and a warm, lively energy. The staff are knowledgeable and professional--the kind of people who make hospitality feel like a career, not just a job. That always stands out to me. I also love the outdoor patio in the evenings. It's a great spot to relax, especially when the weather is nice. And practical note: there is private parking available, including an overflow lot with security, which is a big plus in that part of town. One time I asked where the name came from, and they told me Calvin used to joke, "Poor Calvin never has a day off." That made me smile--and honestly, it shows. The consistency, the creativity, and the energy are all still there. Bottom line: if you're in Atlanta, especially near the Piedmont area, make the reservation. This place was so amazing I went there two days in a row. Their staff from the maitre d (Griffin and James) who were both fabulous and amazing to my wonderful bestest ever server Ashley. They all know how to make you feel like you are special. On my first day, we ordered the following the seafood ravioli, crispy beef, smoked old fashioned, and seafood curry. Everything was perfect,served fresh and hot. Nothing needed for any of their dishes. Their chef/owner is a gem and truly talented. I made the mistake of showing my BFF the picture of the seafood curry which my fiancée had on day one and this was his narrative. How does someone make a dish so superb that all of the seafood is cooked to perfection and seasoned like this OMG this is the bomb. He was just amazed that there was 5/6 different seafood in the dish and not one was overcooked. He also made a lot of happy noises while eating this dish. Not sure I have ever seen him enjoy any dish this much!!!! On day two, we had the mango spicy drinks, seafood wontons, I ordered the special which was not on the menu. Remember to ALWAYS ask for the specials as they come and go and you might have something so special. My special consisted of pork tenderloin, topped with prawns, sautéed vegetables and one type of sauce. It was enough for two days and we finished with a special dessert that I heard was new to the chefs rotation it was a chocolate layer cake layered with a pistachio mouse. Yes, it was everything! There is valet parking and security outside you are safe. They also have a nice outside space if the weather permits for outdoor dining. This restaurant is a must have if visiting the area read more

Let me start out by saying that I absolutely love the vibe of Poor Calvin's. From someone who just moved from NYC, I liked how Poor Calvin's gave me an intimate and upbeat vibe that I look for in a big city. I loved the decor, lighting, and details put into the ambiance. The staff was also very personable and knowledgeable of the menu which was a plus. For our dinner, I started off with the mango spice cocktail and as a spicy margarita lover, this did not disappoint. It was a perfect balance between sweet and spicy that I look for when choosing my cocktails. I would come back just to get another one of these and sit by the bar to enjoy the ambience truly. For our appetizer, we started off with the lemongrass mussels, which I enjoyed. It was my first time having muscles with lemon grass, and although it was a unique taste with its freshness, I loved it and couldn't get enough of the soup. For my main course I chose to seafood curry and I wasn't blown away about it honestly. I do like that the seafood was fresh, but the curry to me had a very sweet taste rather than savory which I did not enjoy about the dish. Unfortunately, the menu does state that if you do not like your dish, you cannot return it so I was stuck with a dish for my main course that I didn't love. Every time we're in Atlanta, we come to Poor Calvin's. CRAB DIP BEIGNETS, CRYING TIGER BEEF, IMPERIAL DUCK & LOBSTER, LOBSTER FRIED RICE, peach cobbler empanadas for dessert!! Justin was fantastic, friendly and accommodating, knowledgeable and attentive The restaurant is eclectic in both atmosphere and cuisine. Not the biggest fan, but not sure if our experience was just a fluke. For appetizers, lemongrass mussels were the clear fav - huge portion of mussels sitting in a slightly spicy/light broth. Our dumplings arrived cold and weren't anything special, so could've passed on those. For mains, I found the seafood curry watery and bland (may have been overly sweet), while the sea bass was too oily and overwhelmed by tomatoes (also confused by the addition of bonito flakes). The caramel apple was solid - big fan of a fruit and chocolate desert, so this was just what I wanted. Will warn that it gets LOUD inside - outside seating was fine... We also felt pretty uncomfortable when the "complimentary" valet blatantly pressured us for a tip. read more

We arrived ahead of our reservation and we were able to get worked in early. The host was extremely helpful. Our waitress was Ariel and she was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave a bit of the backstory of the owner and chef. We started with two drinks and the calamari. The drinks were outstanding. The calamari is more of a meaty type instead of the rings. We moved on to our entrées, which were the lobster fried rice and the fried chicken entrée. Both were outstanding. The inside of the restaurant is very tight and intimate. Also, there is a 19% mandatory gratuity for all tickets. Our meal for two drinks, one appetizer, and two entrées came to about $170. They do have complementary valet, which is very helpful. Overall, we will be back but only once a year or so. read more

Calvin may be poor but his food is rich! Had an absolutely amazing all around experience here, came with my family to celebrate graduation (about 10 people) and they accommodated us all smoothly!! The service was amazing, our waitress described each dish like she made it herself, and was dropping jokes and chatting with the family! Everyone loved their dish, I had the duck and lobster pad Thai, the duck was probably the best duck I've EVER had. It was so flavorful and tender, which is hard to do with duck. I also loved the lobster mac and cheese and the seafood spring rolls! Prices are expensive but the portions were big!! There's also somehow a lobster tail in every dish lol. They also gave me and my friend a free dessert to celebrate :) Tldr: 100% recommend for a nice date night or a celebration!! 5/5 food 5/5 service 5/5 vibes read more

Once again affirming that fusion food has the best flavor. Though I think this place was advertised as French-Vietnamese cuisine, it was more like 70% thai, 20% western, and 10% general Asian fusion. We ordered a spread: - nectar cocktail: so gingery it was bracing, but good to clear your throat and sinuses - lychee martini: a huge pour of dangerously strong and sweet stuff - pho cocktail: herbaceous - lavender lemonade: can't let the DD feel left out - shaking garlic shrimp: don't skimp on the sauce - seafood curry: classic, generous with the fish - KBBQ ribs with lobster mac and curry collards: perfectly cooked ribs with a delicious sauce different than American BBQ sauce, nicely contrasted with the curry spiced earthiness of the greens - pork belly and crab tom yum fried rice: I wasn't sure I was getting much of the crab or tom yum flavor but it was still a delicious fried rice served in a pinapple! - duck dynasty: super interesting Mediterranean style flavors in the sauce that complemented the richness of the duck - pandan pound cake: a literal SLAB of cake with fruit, ube whipped cream, and strawberry (baileys?) ice cream. In Atlanta for work, went with team for last minute dinner plan. Service was great as we were seated promptly. The ambiance was nice, cozy and inviting for a night out with friends! The server Justin was helpful guiding us with recommendations for drinks and delicious food choice. We settled on the lamb chop, and the house special - Vietnamese chicken and crap curry with a side of rice. Ended dinner with sharing a yummy chocolate berries cake. My wife and I went to Poor Calvin's for dinner after a show at the Fox Theatre. I read great things from other Yelpers about the restaurant; we were not disappointed. We arrived at the restaurant more than an hour early than our reservation. I was pleasantly surprised that we were promptly seated. The restaurant was almost full and buzzing with activity by 6:30 pm on a Saturday night. Our waitress, Louise, took great care of us. We shared a special starter for the night -- mashed halibut and cod fritters (covered with mango chutney). Absolutely delicious. For entrees, my wife had the Seafood Curry. I had the Thai Yellow Curry with lobster tail and scallops. Both dishes were served with green-tinted, pandan-infused jasmine rice. The pandan added a delicious, vanilla-like flavor. All together, a very sumptuous meal that we both continued to talk about the next day. Louise told us that Chef Calvin was on the premises that evening. We were pleasantly surprised when the chef came by our table to check on us. We washed down our meals with a bourbon and an Old Fashioned. My wife appreciated having a real whiskey glass for her bourbon. =) Five star rating for a five star experience. Highly recommended. read more

The best restaurants are the places that put a bit of creativity in every dish so that their identity and perspective on food comes through in their cooking. Every single thing I had here was unique and personalized to this house and that makes for an amazingly worthwhile experience. The Korean ribs were a perfect blend of southern comfort food and tangy Asian glaze. Even the calamari was unique with the wasabi drizzle and umami fish sauce dip. I've had calamari at a hundred places but never like this. read more

I have to say from the server to atmosphere to the food I really enjoyed this spot. It's on the smaller side but still cute and has a little outdoor patio area as well as a bar at entry. Love this place! I've been once before, and last night made me ask myself, "why has it been so long?". This place is a gem! Great service, our waiter was on point, personable and efficient! The ambiance is amazing! Just the right mood and the vibe is excellent! The other patrons are friendly and everyone around us, talked to the tables next to them and everyone was having a good time! The food was spectacular! I had the seafood curry and he had the lobster fried rice. We had the Tiger Beef for an appetizer and everything was soooo good! We are not drinking at the moment, but my non-alcoholic mojito was tasty and the drinks coming out around us looked awesome! I will definitely be back to try them, when this dry spell ends! Valet parking is free and an option if available, it can get really busy for their small parking lot so we look for street parking as well. The service is top tier, from the moment we arrived everyone was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. During my first visit, we sat at the bar, and our bartender Malik was on point! He worked the bar effortlessly, making sure everyone was taking care of, making drinks, and taking orders. The ambiance is nice vibe, low music playing, and various dining areas to choose from based on the experience you're looking for. Now, lets get into the food! The menu changes often due to the chef's travels but it is not a bad thing, because every time you go you can try something new. Service: This place stays busy so highly recommend a Resy. Walks are accepted but may be limited to the bar or a longer wait. Sat at the bar and had a great experience with the server/Bartender Malik. Very patient and knowledgeable. Ambiance: Fun Asian inspired decor with a modern touch. Food: This place will always be a go to for when I have friends in town or for a treat. Always consistent and delicious! Drinks were perfection. The Shaky shrimp is cooked beautifully and flavors . you can, but i wouldn't recommend it, especially if you don't want to wait. reservations are best.

I think it's both because my wife and I were there recently they accepted cash and contactless payments
Are there vegan options at this restaurant? Traveling with someone who is.
There are some very limited vegan options, but I do not recommend it at all for vegan or vegetarians, as the owners will make no exceptions or adjustments to their menu to cater to vegan customers.
Any chance on getting a seat without a reservation?
Depends on the night. If you are trying on a weekend of holiday weekend I highly doubt it. The bar Possibly but expect 1-2+ hour wait
Has Poor Calvins closed down? I can't imagine?!?! This place is sooooo good. Google shows it "temporarily closed", the website doesn't exist any longer and the phone just rings and rings?!?

This is one of my favorite Atlanta restaurants. I would definitely not say this is a "fine" dining spot. It's more of a great brunch/ maybe casual dinner spot. The food is great and the staff is amazing. I pretty much come here about twice a month…
