Small American diner, but boy is it delicious! I ordered the corn beef hash with scrambled eggs, Irish potatoes with no bell peppers, and sour dough toast. Sometimes scrambled eggs can be a little bland, but these were tasty! The corn beef hash tasted perfect on top of the sourdough toast. The hasbrowns were nice and crispy. No complaints here! The coffee was pretty good too. I also had a bite of the pancakes which were certainly above average. One odd fact: The floor is carpeted. It was the first thing we noticed. I have been a customer here for over 5 years now and over the years I've slowly decreased my visits due to popularity! God dammit why you have to be so good! You guys need a second location like ASAP! The eggs Benedict is my favorite, that hollandaise sauce flavor is like no other, I've tried it in about 5 other places and flavor doesn't even come close to this. Came here on a Saturday around 11 am and there was a bit of a wait. We didn't mind, ended up waiting 25 mins but it was well worth it. The food was delicious and the staff was so wonderful and kind! I couldn't decide between the spinach omelet plate or the pops country breakfast so the waitress recommended I get the spinach omelet and get biscuits and gravy for my bread choice so that I can get the best of both worlds! I really enjoyed my meal, it was delicious and definitely very homey/diner Only thing I didn't love was the cheese they used on the omelet and the biscuits. Came here on Sunday, May 22, 2016 with family for an early birthday breakfast for my girlfriend. A fun time was had by all, except my pancakes were a bit undercooked. Basically they failed the fork test. So this little piggy had none. One thing I am getting tired of is leaving a restaraunt and either I am still hungry or I am no longer thinking about my hunger pangs, just riddled with disappointment. Now, let me stand on a tall soap box when I say that the service was decent at a time when they were busy. They even tried to remake my pancakes. Unfortunately, the second time it wasn't any better so, they took it off the bill. Parking is abundant and this place will pack 'em in... Please don't come here for a quiet place to have a meal and whisper sweet nothing, rather getting a to go order and taking it back home would be your safest bet if you insist on eating food from this restaurant and you require quiet. Make no if ands or buts about it this IS a local restaurant, the equivalent of a diner back in the northeast, Shirley's on Guam and Saipan, a similar feel of Eggs N Things in Hawaii .. I noted that more than a few of the customers were greeted as friends. Back to my food review (if I wanted to sit on a chair - I would go to the Lazy Boy store; If I wanted ambiance I would be more compelled to dine at Cezanne, you get the idea) I don't quite have this California place figured out yet. Settling for mediocre doesn't fly in just about . every place I have lived around the globe. New York, Kona, Guam, Honolulu, Phoenix, Tampa and even the place I routinely travel to like Portland one of the foodie capitals of the country, I have noted. Bottom line is we all work hard for our money and then we give it away in exchange for something that someone should have made an effort to get right. Tropicana, Mimi's, The Nest, Callander's... I feel bad for people having to work in this environment , the sweat was dripping down their forehead I saw them wipe with napkins but I never saw them go wash their hands and they kept serving customers . If the dining area felt like an oven I can only imagine how the kitchen felt , workers looked dehydrated I hope the owner see my post because these are unacceptable working conditions . My first time here..got my breakfast and was served a burnt piece of bacon. Also ordered a waffle and it was cold. The waitress didn't seem to care about anything as if she didn't want to be there. My friend ordered an omelet and we were both shocked to see they slapped two pieces of square cheese on it trying to pass it off for shredded cheese. I don't even do that at home. Wanted to try a new breakfast place on a Sunday morning ( or was it Saturday ) and saw good reviews of this place on yelp. Great, let's go! There's ample parking in the front when we got there. The place looks like a typical hole in the wall establishment. If I passed by, and I have thousands of time already, I would never notice this place. We went in and I was surprised to see lots of patrons inside. Hmmm.. Our server wasn't too friendly. She seemed frazzled since there were only 2 of them running around taking orders and putting plates out. I had the French Toast with sausage which came out ok. I mean how can you ruin french toast or sausage or the eggs. I was gonna try their eggs benedict but wussed out since I felt like this place wouldn't have a chef who would know how to whip up a really great sauce for the eggs benedict. Well. No joke they took forever brining us our food and we had a party of two. Much larger tables that came later were served before us. It was as if they accidently gave our good to someone else because they finally brought our food over to us from outside the restaurant. Yes the place is tiny and drab and if you took out the tables and chairs and replaced them with desks it would look like an office of an insurance company in the 80's. Biscuits and Gravy are hardly the best here. They were immediately knocked out of that category when they were served with barely lukewarm gravy. I got my hash "Irish" style so they were topped with a mountain of sauteed onions and green bell peppers. The veggies still had a nice crunch to them which I personally prefer. Irish style hash is seriously the way to go and no hot sauce is needed on these flavor packed hash browns. My chili cheese omelet was the perfect pick for the rainy Sunday. My favorite chili cheese omelet used to be from Pacific Diner in San Pedro. Used to be being the operative word. This chili cheese omelet had me wishing I grew up in Downey eating at Pop's for weekend breakies instead of eating at The Diner in San Pedro. This place is soooooo Horrible!!!!! I got an omelette and they basically gave me two slabs of Kraft Single Cheese on top of my omelette! Like seriously?! Who does that?! I really don't understand how this place has people going back, but I'm not going back again. I could've made my own omelette at home with real cheese and real ingredients. Hands down one of the best breakfast joints I've been to. I grew up in Downey so I had visited this place before Yelp existed so I am honored to leave a review here. What can I say about Pops?! I first came here thinking it was funny to visit because it had the same name of a cafe/diner in a child hood comedy I use to watch "Wayans Bros." But after I ordered their omelet, I knew I was coming back. The eggs and hash browns hit the spot. The food overall is tasty, the service is always top prime and the customers are majorly friendly as well. It's a local private owned business so you have your regulars and new comers, all good people. I would recommend their omelet's, they are all good. THE GOOD -Everything about this place is great. -Atmosphere: very inviting. The workers here are so nice and attentive. -Food: very tasteful. Everything was up to par. I ordered the Eggs Benedict my last visit. The poached eggs were overcooked by just a few seconds but regardless, they were amazing. The Hollandaise sauce is a bit too thick but the somewhat runny eggs gave it a good balance. I've also tried their omelets which were perfect. You can never go wrong with omelets. -Always order something with bacon, because why not? -Tip: if your meal doesn't have bacon, that's no big deal. Get a side of bacon...or two...or three. Their bacon is thick and so tasty, but when isn't bacon tasty? -Irish potatoes are a MUST have. I will never go back to hash browns ever again. Never ever. I've made a promise to these Irish potatoes and I'll never betray them. THE BAD -Closed on Mondays! I always forget and come on Mondays. I get so sad. So, so sad. -I've heard it gets pretty busy. I've never had to wait, but here's a warning just in case you do have to wait. And regardless of how long you have to wait, DO IT. It's worth it, trust. THE WORST -I get too full to finish my meal. Not happy at all with Pop's today. Ordered a large to-go order and almost everything sucked in one way or another. I get that to-go is not going to be as good and fresh as dine in, but, honestly, everything was just ugh. The ham steak and eggs was bone dry. Hash browns were barely cooked, and certainly not well done, like I asked for. Eggs were over medium, not over easy and I confirmed that twice, but still wrong. Belgium waffle was absolute soggy mess. They should poke holes in the stryo container to let out moisture. Anyone knows that. My son wouldn't even touch it. Scrambled eggs all runny and saturated in oil from the completely disgusting home fries. I saw the home fries on someone else's yelp review so I ordered them for the first time today. I am posting a picture of the nicely colored home fries from my fellow yelper's review and I am posting a picture of the oil soaked shitty fries they gave me. The omelets left something to be desired. I had the spanks omelet. It was eggs, red sauce and cheese. That was it. The eggs were fluffy and peeled easy into the fork but lacked flavor. I like more egg in my egg dishes instead of what is mixed with it to give it a fullness (milk, cream..etc) Small place. Quick service if you can get a seat. Bottomless coffee. Been coming to Pop's Cafe for years, maybe even over a decade! When it comes to mom and pop shops, it doesn't get much better than Pop's Cafe. I usually only come from breakfast, but I have never ever left unsatisfied. The prices are pretty reasonable too. My teen aged son loves the pancakes here. He says they're pretty fluffy and delicious. I have to agree with him. I tend to steal a bite or two from his plate, but that's only because I have a favorite dish here that I pretty much never veer from and that's the Pop's Country Breakfast. It's sausage gravy goodness! I highly recommend it! So, the Pop's Country Breakfast consists of 1 egg cooked any way you like (I usually get 2 eggs over medium), hash browns or Irish potatoes (which is basically hash browns with sauteed green bell peppers and onions on top - I HIGHLY recommend that), and and open faced biscuit with a sausage patty smothered in white sausage gravy goodness! It's breakfast food porn at it's finest!! Sometimes there's a wait outside if you get there too late. I try to go between 8 and 9 am. Any later than that, and you'll find people waiting outside. There's not chairs outside to sit on, so you have to stand. It's worth it though. You get a kick ass breakfast for not a ton of money. read more
