Machaca con huevos - unfortunately reporting the meal was very bland. No salt no sazón no nada.

I did return because I was impressed by my first visit. This time the experience was different. The coffee this time was very weak and diluted. I ordered the machaca and huevos. Although the machaca and eggs looked great with all the diced veggies it was totally bland. The refried beans and rice were also bland. Too bad. I think I tasted more of the pot the beans were cooked in haha. I have two stars because at least the food was not dry or old.

I was so excited to come here. Reviews were pretty good and food looked great. I ordered the corn beef hash with over medium eggs, but I got well done eggs, so I asked if they would remake it, and the waiter took it back, but instead of remaking it they threw it back on the grill and cooked it some more... Kind you they don't know that the egg yolk when fully cooked for some stupid reason makes me violently sick like projectile vomit sick not sure why, but it does, either way I shouldn't have to tell them that because I simply asked for over medium eggs and I should have gotten over medium eggs.

When we arrived, the line was really long, even though I had called ahead and was told there was no wait. We still had to put our name on the list, but to their credit, we were seated within a few minutes. The place was definitely crowded and loud. I ordered water and coffee, and my friend just got water. A staff member brought the drinks but ended up spilling the coffee all over the table and menu. He just said, "Sorry about that," and walked off. I figured he would come back to clean it up, but he didn't. I had to flag him down to ask for napkins. Instead of helping, he just dropped off a stack. It was a lot of coffee, four napkins were soaked. Thankfully, our server Paris turned things around. She was super friendly and had great personality. I asked her for a recommendation between the breakfast burrito and the Belgian waffle. She suggested the burrito, and it did not disappoint. My friend got the country fried steak (which Paris said was the best in town), and he was also craving a pancake, so they let him sub that in for toast. Service started off rocky, but Paris made the experience better. I probably would not return to sit down but I would order take out.

Noisy; popular and well organized. Food was great! The salsa could be much better but overall, great. The breakfast burrito was good and quite big. Waffle breakfast was equally good. Service is always attentive. Will be back!

First timers driving by from out of town. OMGOSH pancakes. I was looking for good ones and I definitely found them. Hubby really enjoyed the CFS. It's his go to when we stop into wonderful places like this. Potatoes done exactly as asked, coffee..YES PKEASE keep this wonderful taste comin'. Wait staff...10/10. Very kind friendly and knowledgeable. What we need more of everywhere. We will be back. Oh...saw onions-had to taste onion rings. DELICIOUS! We will be back when in town again.

Sad to say had a different experience this go round. Glad to see so many people coming to this place but unfortunately service and food have taken the hit. Staff was courteous n friendly but overwhelmed. Had to go up and get bill after waiting awhile and food was overcooked. Don't get me wrong food still ok but not like our last visit.

I thought it was good but not great. First time trying pops cafe with some friends and we weren't sure whether to try the huevos rancheros so I went safe and ordered corned beef hash... I asked the lady if it's made in house and she said yes but ... definitely Did not taste like it. Maybe I did not ask the question the right way haha but yeah it didn't taste like something they made or look that way either. I've had homemade corned beef hash and this def was not it. My friend got their pork chorizo plate and the beans were def canned also. The country fried steak also did not taste like something they made themselves. The price for these plates were about $17+ each. The pancakes on the other hand were great! We loved the pancakes a lot! That's where they get there 3 stars from me. I heard this place gets pretty packed and you seat yourself. Service was good though. Friendly people. The food was just ok. Thankful for those pancakes though...

Very good service! Food was good nothing special about it. The inside was loud like any breakfast restaurant. The walls have old license plates from different states and countries. We were charged for an extra coffee which and also they charged us more than the bill amount. When they swiped the credit card it was .93 cents more than what the food receipt said. I didn't read anywhere if they charge to pay for credit card or did they warn me but I figured that's what it was.

My boyfriend recommended me this mom and pop shop. We tried coming here a couple times but the wait was insane! We tried one more time on Valentine's Day and we waited for about 30-45 minutes, considering the date, it wasn't too bad! The portions are hefty and the waiter was patient and polite.

Pop's is a longtime local favorite in Downey. It provides excellent service, good food and reasonable prices. It won't break the bank to take the family out for breakfast! I've explored much of the menu, but I always return to their famous pancakes! They are enormous, fluffy, and have that perfect, old-fashioned hotcake flavor that other spots just can't match. The BLT on rye or sourdough is another standout: a classic sandwich absolutely piled high with super crispy, perfectly cooked bacon. If you're looking for genuine, quality food and a great atmosphere, make a special trip to Pop's!

Downey on the map! What a cute and yummy little hidden diner. I can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this place! Simple inside with great food and numerous choices. The waitstaff was amazing and they were so friendly. They suggested a few items and they were right. This place gets packed especially on the weekends. They have limited space and they are not open for many hours. Be prepared to wait. It is well worth it though.

15/5 stars for the deep fried french toast. 2/5 star scrambled eggs (overcooked). 3/5 star sausage. 3/5 star buttermilk pancakes. 5/5 service. More on the deep fried french toast: I was a bit skeptical when my wife first told me about them, but she was right and the experience changed my life! The toast has a delicate and crispy outer texture, and nice, soft innards. It's a texture orgasm, and I want to have another one. read more

Personally I think this is at the top top of the list as far as great breakfast places to go! I mean they've been around about 60 years! I'm sure that probably has something to do with it but since growing up in Downey and this is my first time going I feel a little ashamed to tell you! Their chicken fried steak is handmade obviously some type of a beef cutlet that they pound the hell out of it is so smooth and so tender and so flavorful with their own country batter and smothered in their pork country gravy big chunks of sausage in it yummy! And the prices are so fair these days cuz everything is out of control with prices and that's not tell them we don't want the word to get out that their prices are reasonable. And they do potatoes several different ways. One hash browns simply shredded potatoes. You either have the shredded type and they can put bell peppers and onions on it or they can do like cottage fries or chunks of potatoes and they can put the onions in bell peppers on those too and they're grilled onions are just dialed in perfectly! And eggs, I mean come on eggs or eggs But their fluffy airy biscuit and gravy as an option oh my goodness!! Do not get a side of biscuits and gravy if you're there and you have the option of toast or a biscuit get the biscuit and the gravy. Oh my goodness it's a meal by itself! Of course I had to devour the whole thing! I'll be back! And the server I don't remember her name but she doesn't look very old but she's so smart!! Very brilliant young lady and great personality and great server! She knew everything about the food, Was on top of my coffee and don't judge a book by the cover. read more

Everyone says great things about this place. The crowd of people standing outside waiting for a seat, had us excited!! Once we were seated, we realized how small the place is. Our waiter was nice but busy. The coffee was okay, but not great. The food was okay, but not great. The whole place was okay, but not great. After eating the food, I'm not sure what the fuss is about? Will we come here again? Maybe.... But, Not because it's bad, just because it's kinda average. read more

First time going here yesterday. I was welcomed as soon I walked and was given the option to seat myself . Service was exceptional and the food came fairly quick . They even let me build my own breakfast sandwich, which was really tasty. Definitely going back tomorrow morning lol . read more

This was our first visit to Pop's. Of course I found it by YELPING for a breakfast place. We arrived an found people waiting outside (may be a good sign). We waited for about 20 minutes. Inside there are 8 tables for two and 7 tables for 4. We were greeted promptly, and coffee served (YAY). I ordered the sausage and cheese omelette, my wife had the Belgian Waffle. The food took a little long to get there but the place was full and they were doing a robust take-out business as well so that is understandable. When our food arrived it was hot and prepared well. There was a lot of cheese and sausage in the omelette and it was hot. My only problem with this item was that the sausage was not incorporated into the egg mixture. When you cut into the omelette, the sausage comes falling out. Its like chopped sausage stuffed in to an egg envelope. This happens in a lot of places. Being an omelette aficionado, i like it the traditional way. The flavor of the ingredients was great, though. The toast was fresh and hot too. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her waffle. I thought that her bacon was way too crispy - actually crumbly - but she was okay with it. The service was great for a little place like this. My coffee never got less that like a third of a cup. The waiter and even the busser made sure that everyone was taken care of refilling my wife's diet coke as well. As soon as someone would leave, the table was cleaned and reset and another party would be seated. The team works very well together and keeps the flow coming in as quickly as possible. The restaurant was very clean and the restrooms were very clean as well. Nice job Pop's Cafe. I will definitely be back read more

Love this little place. They only do breakfast and brunch hours but if you can make it give them a try. This isn't a modern breakfast place but if you want a hardy breakfast with consistent staples this is your place. I love there breakfast burritos, corn beef hash, sausage biscuits and gravy. I came here with my mom this past Sunday, we got here a little after 9am, the timing seemed optimal: we only had to wait around 5 minutes. By the time we left, there were several tables worth of people waiting outside. Ok, it's a little place & very "busy", the servers are amazing: gliding around & catering to several tables at a time, always friendly. The food was great, the coffee strong, the portions generous: come in empty or plan on the doggie bag. I had the corned beef hash with potatoes, scrambled eggs ( soft & silky ), and biscuits (2) with gravy on the side. They are very generous with the butter. One of the biscuits, gravy & butter ended up coming home with me, I enjoyed it warmed in the toaster oven ( wrapped in foil ) with the butter & jam. Even better the next day! My mom had pancakes ( just 2 but they were enormous! )... I think we've all had pancakes that have no " substance ", that fall apart after the syrup hits them. But these were thick, " sturdy " in a good way, delicious. I had a taste of her pancakes...those pancakes make me want to come back. They're also offered with blueberries in the batter...I can't wait! read more

So glad we came here instead of the typical IHOP or Denny's. The service was fast and friendly, and since it was so busy I was pleasantly surprised with the welcoming feel. I tried a taste of my sister-in-law's breakfast pork chop, and it was nicely seared. They gave her two pieces and tons of potato. The rest of us got the French toast combos. We got to choose between the original and deep fried French toast and opted to do half & half. Deep fried was good, but I'm still a fan of original. Overall I'd say it was good and I'll definitely come back. I tend to compare every breakfast place to Cracker Barrel, which is a 5star for me. Pops is a high 4. read more

SO-SO. Absolutely NOT extraordinary food. It is popular and was crowded when we were there. This seems like a neighborhood restaurant. Perhaps the good reviews were from locals trying to give support to the owners? Staff was nice and service was good. Pop's is down the street from my house. The Chicken Fried Steak is to die for, you have to make sure to get it with Irish potatoes, and a side of pancakes. Perfect when you are hungry or great to share if you don't feel like stuffing your face (I always do). Anything on the menu is delicious but my family usually orders two to three C.F.S.'s because nobody wants to share. I also appreciate the smiling faces and friendly service. Writing this is making me hungry, I think I'm going to Pop's tomorrow! read more

This place is excellent! Breakfast all day. The Breakfast is Really Good. Good service. I came here today for Lunch. I ordered breakfast. I got the corned beef hash. It was Really Good. Superb! The Irish potatoes were Excellent. Coffee was Good. I like this place because it is casual and unpretentious. Good prices. Good Ambiance. Good servers. We decided to come here today for breakfast because my girlfriend found this place on yelp. Our server was so nice and funny every time she came to check on us and for the food I had the eggs Benedict and some pancakes, while my girlfriend had some French toast. The pancakes were deliciously rich and my girls french toast was so crunchy and hearty. Both our eggs and bacon were cooked perfectly. Definitely recommend this place for not just the amazing food but for the great and friendly service from their staff. I'll also say to try to come early to avoid the rush they get because there will be a line of people during peak breakfast hours; it's not as hidden as it looks. I can't wait to come back especially because I'm keen to try their waffle so that has me excited for our next visit. read more

We tried this place heading to LA. It's a very small cute place. It was pretty packed when we got there. We waited about 25-30 minutes. Their service was good, not the greatest but good. We ordered steak, the patty, spinach omelette, chicken fried steak and I forget what I ordered, but everything was delicious. Plain dishes but delicious. My brother had ordered medium rare steak and it was fully cooked with small red. So completely the opposite of his request, he didn't mind it, so that was one downfall. No big deal but you expect what you ordered. Other then that, the staff was really Nice oh and their pancakes are pretty huge but really Delicious. I do recommend to check it out. read more

Great straight forward breakfast. Service was attentive and polite. Felt like home. Had the Pork Chops breakfast with country potatoes. Sat outside as inside was already full at 9:00 a.m. Only negative was the biscuit was not warm but since it was going home, didn't really matter. Will be back for sure. read more

We had a half hour wait on a Saturday morning but it went pretty fast for the line. Small family run cafe but food was hot, fresh and homemade. The wait staff was friendly and fast. The deep fried French toast was worth the wait. We're visiting from the midwest so it was nice to have service like back home. read more

I only tried a piece of it without the syrup which I think was a mistake because the kumquat syrup was my friend's favorite. I definitely need to try it again with the syrup. Best for last, mango curd French toast was my favorite! I fell in love with sweetness and tanginess of the mango curd. The French toast was soft and you can taste the butter. Pops Café is a true hidden gem! I decided to bring my mom along for breakfast. Even though it was a busy morning and we had a short wait, it was absolutely worth it. The food was fantastic! The biscuits and gravy were some of the best I've ever had! They were rich, flavorful, and perfectly comforting. My mom went with the country fried steak, which was seasoned beautifully with a crispy golden crust and a tender, flavorful interior. The coffee was another highlight. Fresh, hot, and constantly refilled with a smile. The atmosphere is just as inviting as the food. Pop's is another local Downey spot that I adore. My brother lives about five minutes away from this spot, and I love visiting him in the mornings and heading out to eat breakfast at Pop's, The atmosphere inside is homey and very welcoming. The servers are very kind and patient and loving joking around. The pancakes are unbeatable, and the coffee is amazing as well. Prices are pretty good for what you're getting. Free refills on the coffee as well. The kids also love it here! They love having breakfast with their tio. My brother and I love it here, and I hope others will come and visit this wonderful hole in the wall spot. Pops Cafe is definitely a local gem! The food is consistently great, and while I enjoy dining in, I mostly do carry out and every order is always spot on. Nothing is ever missing, and if I ask for extra of anything, it's always included. The staff is friendly, and the owner is genuinely one of the coolest peopleI can't remember his name, but he's what makes this place so humble and welcoming. He recently opened a new spot called Pops Wings, and I'm wishing him all the success he's worked so hard for it's well deserved. One of my favorite places to eat! Hands down the best Breakfast in town! I love the homey environment and the homemade food, it's as if you are eating Grandma's cooking. So I stopped by this morning for my favorite deep fried French toast and over heard the waitresses talking about Pop's being open for dinner soon! I am sooo excited thought I'd share the great news with my fellow yelpers! Long story short, I asked when they think dinner will open and they said around the week of June 1st 2017. Always nice to find hidden gems. I was on the lookout for a family friendly place to eat breakfast with great food and Pop's Café definitely has it. I'm usually not one to wait around for breakfast however the line outside Pop's seemed to be moving at a decent pace so I decided to stay and try it out. I am sure glad I did as their eggs benedict were amazing and went well with their delicious Irish potatoes. Usually in places like these you either get great food with mediocre service or mediocre food with great service, Pop's I'm glad to say has both amazing food and service. First time here read a lot of reviews about long lines and having to wait a bit for a table but we just walked right in and sat at the only table open lol which i guess if we would've been here 2 min later we would've waited!! Right away drink orders were taken within 5 min Ordered the deep fried french toast breakfast and my buddy ordered a pancake breakfast.. I kid you not 5 min later our food was out i was like wth lol The food tasted just as well as it looked.. Delicious! Great at home feeling with excellent service!! Amazing service with a friendly and knowledgeable waiter. Our meals were delivered in reasonable time and they were absolutely delicious! I highly recommend the eggs Benedict with the crunchy potatoes. I would've added a picture but was halfway through the plate when I remembered Jose was always checking in and asking if we needed anything. Even when we'd first said no he asked if we were interested in the house salsa and brought some when it piqued our interest. Highly recommend and will definitely be coming back! I recently had breakfast at Pop's Cafe all by myself, and it was a different but delightful experience. This small family-owned place has limited hours, closing by mid-day, but the food is worth it. I ordered the classic country meal: biscuits and gravy, hash browns, eggs, and a sausage patty sandwich. It was the ultimate comfort food. And their iced coffee is the best I've ever had. Awful awful awful we got there because of the Google site and we Been at the Santa Ana Pops restaurant before so we decided to follow up on the second restaurant so we were asked request in for reservations and of course Google says that there's no way come on down I tried calling them to confirm no one picks up so once we got there I confronted the waitress in regards to our presents and she says that Google was off-key that Google stole their identity and that we don't follow anything that Google says so go figure read more

i've had better. thought it it would be a friendly cafe seeing as it is family owned, but...no. it wasnt. when we walked in the waitress grunted sarcastically "sit. wherever." we were handed sticky, well-worn menues. we saw our server approximately two more times: once to take our order, then to deliver our order. food was not great, not bad. just average. i ordered an omelette, my husband steak and eggs with sausage. the sausage was not appetizing. read more

Its been a year now i got introduced to this place and by far the absolute best pancakes i have even eaten. I have tried almost everything on the menu and i cant say anything bad about the food. My favorite plate is the beef machaca, comes with home made beans and rice. And the salsa is to die for!.
