We've eaten at Pop's 4 times now. I really wanted to like this restaurant, but they just can't get it right. First time we went, everything was too salty to eat. I sent him a message as I didn't want to give him a bad review. Next time, I ordered the grilled salmon party and I got fried. I can't eat fried foods, so i sent it back only to have the waitress point us out and the cooks all stare me down. That should've been enough, but i really wanted to like this restaurant. Just went (finally) and it was excellent. The fried creamed corn nuggets were perfect. Country fried steak and turnip greens and sautéed squash was no more or less than I'd expect--just what I expected and very tasty. But those corn nuggets! Dang they are tasty. For desert I got the bread pudding in vanilla sauce and it was delicious. I was extremely happy with my meal. The atmosphere was excellent. A very nice atmosphere; very "down home". And different enough from other places you know you're not a Crackerbarrel or the Blue Plate Cafe. That being said, I get the feeling some of the negative reviewers either didn't understand what kind of restaurant they were going to ... or are just a little too picky. I will give the compliment first- the waiter was very friendly and helpful. However, We ordered the country fried steak - it was okay, kinda chewy. We also ordered the salmon croquettes - they were horrible. It was obvious that they were pre-made frozen patties. They were overcooked and hard as rocks. The macaroni and cheese was bland. We saw the owner walking around- she never spoke to the customers or checked on any of them. She walked past us 3x while we were waiting for a ticket and didn't seem to care. If you want some true good 'ol comfort food, this is your place! Great, sweet staff. Delicious from the heart homemade meals. My husband got the Chicken Fried steak and claims that their mashed potatoes are better than my homemade ones! To be honest, they are pretty good. He also had the soup of the day, loaded baked potato soup. Although not as creamy as he is used to, he did love it with the chunks of fresh potatoes. read more

This was my first time at Pops, had the meatloaf, turnip greens and corn. Sad to say it was just gross. The meatloaf was a pale beige lump of mushy meat that was flavorless except for a weird aftertaste. The greens were plain except the vague taste of soap. You can't really mess up corn and a roll so that's why I gave it one star. The waitress was nice but after we got our food, never checked on us once. read more

I had heard pretty bad things about this place from family and friends, but it was so much worse than I thought. The menu does not have much to choose from and I wasn't very hungry so I ordered a kids mini corn dogs and Mac n cheese. It tasted alright for having a bad impression to begin with, but the result of eating was disastrous. Not only did my stomach hurt but I spent 30 minutes in their restroom, unable to even make it out of the building. I was nauseous and had horrible stomach cramps. Another 15 minutes later I had to use the restroom again at home with an even worse sudden eruption than before. To spare you all the gorey details let's just say I wouldn't wish this on anyone!!!! When I first went to Pop's, it was during their opening months. They had glimmers of hope. The owners were (and still are) awesome people who spent time with the customers and have cemented their place in the community. So, in the throes of this awful pandemic, my wife and I were looking for some really great veggies. We checked out the local options and didn't see anything worth getting a Charlie Horse about or a reason to catch our bird on fire. My wife suggested calling Pop's. Boys and Girls, I was really impressed with the variety on the menu. We placed an order and picked it up curbside. By the time we got home, around 15 minutes had passed. It was obvious that they were using fresh veggies, cooked and seasoned to perfection. I can't think of anywhere in Bartlett except my kitchen where I could get better vegies. GO TO POP'S. If their salad, meat and seafood dishes are anywhere near as tasty and well executed as their vegie selections, you'll never go back to an overcooked buffet or a chain restaurant with limited options. read more

Today I had lunch at Pop's for the first time although it is only minutes from our home. I was pleasantly surprised. I had the chopped steak wrapped in bacon, smothered in mushroom and onion brown gravy. It was very tasty. I ate all of it which surprised me but it had a really good flavor. My sides were turnip greens, very well season, and fried okra, a little greasy. The jalapeño corn bread muffins were yummy as well. I enjoyed this southern cooking kitchen. The service was great too. It makes me laugh to see Fred's review saying the portions are small since I am so past the point of being full every time I eat here. Large portions are a definite here. Fred must be the guy that the buffet hates to see coming. Food is good, folks are friendly. We eat here 3-4 times a month. The hamburgers are seasoned so well!! The turnip greens are gritty feeling and gritty sounding when I chew them (like dirt particles) which tells me they were most likely not washed thoroughly. I specifically asked if the green beans were fresh or canned and was told they were fresh. The greens are definitely canned. Not one bit of flavor on the broccoli. The cornbread was the best part of the veggie plate and I'm glad the squash was not over- cooked. I won't be back. read more

Always on the lookout for a good, everyday kind of eatery and Pop's fits perfectly. Several good entrees of good Southern Comfort cooking with sides to match. On special the night I was there: Fried chicken livers, and they were cooked to perfection -- done, but not petrified. Good portion sizes and very reasonable cost in a clean, modern but not flashy atmosphere. Service staff competent, efficient and friendly. I think Pop's Comfort Kitchen will become a regular, even though it takes me twenty-five minutes to drive there. read more

I usually have the veggie plate and all have been delicious. My husband says their chicken livers are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. We go to Pop's regularly, and have picked up from there often during the covid shutdowns. They do a good job with pick up and the staff is always friendly and nice. My usual order is the Hawaiian chicken over wild rice. I really love the flavor of the chicken (and the rice) which is cooked or marinated in soy or terriyaki sauce and topped with a slice of pineapple.. Add a couple of veggies and you have a great meal. My husband likes the roast beef, the fried chicken stack and loves the "tender" cabbage. Like someone else mentioned, the corn bread REALLY needs some work. We ask for the cornbread with jalapena peppers in it and it tastes pretty good but its hard as a rock (VERY dense). I know they could do a better job with the cornbread if they tried. We have tried different desserts and they are all pretty tasty. Its in the shopping center where Kroger is in Bartlett. We may go today! read more

Wanted to try this place out as soon as we heard about it - knew to wait a few weeks until they got the "kinks" worked out. Nothing wrong with that, every place has to find their rhythm. Went for lunch around 12:45-1:00. Were greeted promptly by a friendly waitress and seated right away. She announced the specials, asked for our drink order and left us to look over the menu. Had to try the fried green tomatoes! They did not disappoint. Not as "tart" as some I have had, but were very good. My husband had the chicken fried steak (his litmus test of any country-type restaurant LOL) and pronounced it very good, as were his fried okra and turnip greens sides. I had the catfish basket. Two HUGE fillets with really good curvy, flavored "fries". Beginning to end was a very good experience, prices were competitive and service was outstanding. Did not try any of the desserts as of yet, will have to review that another day. :-) Now we hear they are open on Saturday mornings for breakfast! Will definitely have to check that out as well. I went for lunch here with a friend & we were both very disappointed. I had potato soup, but it was more like some half cooked boiled potatoes with a few pieces of junk thrown in. My friend had the pot roast which she described as tough and very bland. I wanted to like this place. I went once with my whole family, and after I ordered, my MIL decided she also wanted what I had. The portions were SO small, it was like they took a regular portion and split it between us. Wanting to give it a second chance, my husband and I went again this past weekend. After waiting 5 minutes, a girl came to get our drink order. She announced that she wasn't our waitress, but wanted us to have our drinks while we waited. Well, we continued to wait 15 minutes. There was another couple who was being waited on, and an older woman who was finishing her meal. And SO many high school-aged employees laughing and giggling in the corner. We walked out with our water glasses and menus still on the table. None of the employees even asked why we were leaving or tried to right the situation. The only reason I'm even giving this place one star, is because it's the lowest rating available. This place is a total joke. read more

Well, I really want this place to succeed, but twice we have been disappointed. Chicken livers were not cooked thru; very rubbery. I got the Chicken Pot Pie for the Wednesday special and it was tasteless. I even asked for some poultry seasoning and they said they don't use it. ?? How can you make chicken dishes W/O poultry seasoning? I took it home to "doctor it up" later, but had GI issues after only a few bites, so I guess the chicken was bad. I've realized that if cooked chicken is tasteless, it is usually spoiled. I agree w other reviews, the Turnip Greens were delicious,....almost as good as West Street Diner's in Germantown. Catfish was good; I think Fat Larry's is better. Sadly I missed their short attempt at Breakfast. I would LOVE to find a close breakfast place since Maria's has closed. We need a place that serves delicious pancakes like "The English Muffin" in Hot Springs! My biggest complaint with restaurants is that they rarely seem to try and "outdo" each other. I wonder if the head chef has ever been to Sweet Peas, Fat Larry's or The Cupboard? Does he watch the Food Network for several hours a week like I do? I am no chef, but have been cooking since I was 10, and find it dissappointing that I can cook something much better than a trained chef. I will be back, more things to try, but I'm not in any hurry. read more
