This is the smallest Mexican bakery I have been to in SJ. The lady working the counter was really nice and they take debit card for $10 min. Despite the size, they had 30 different types of breads, mostly classics, but smaller amounts than other panaderias. I purchased 6 breads and it was $12 and some change. I saw their prices on the wall and most average $1.50. The place looks homey, and I noticed it has regular customers. I was surprised by the mango empanadas so I got one for my husband and he was disappointed it didn't taste fresh. I also picked an unusual one that looks similar to the cuerno and it was on the harder side. The panaderos are from Michoacan which is close to Guanajuato so the bread was similar to that of GTO. IYKYK! The cuernos, both the sugary ones and unsweetened ones (cuerno de sal) were soft and delicious. Otherwise, I will probably stick to my fave (3 Hermanos). read more

I am disappointed with the freshness of the Rosca. preordered my Rosca a few days before they gave me a discount for preorders. I had scheduled to pick up my Rosca at 8am on January the 6th. I picked it up and they handed me the box it felt cold but i didn't think anything of it. To my surprise after cutting it that evening the Rosca was not fresh it was dry (like a day old) I've ordered from this bakery before and it was fresh. I picked this place to make a cake for my first granddaughter because they did such a good job on my nieces quince cake. I had a picture of what I wanted. I was shocked at how good of a price it was compared to other bakeries! Richard did an amazing job and the cake was the centerpiece of the table. I have white cake with cherry filling and it was yummy. I recommend this bakery for any party and will be going back! Today was just a typical hot summer day. My friend and I went in and grabbed two medium sized cups of horchatas. It was my first time having this milky sweet drink. I liked it though because it reminded me of spiced chai tea, with the way a cinnamon flavor lingered after every sip. I wish we were hungry enough to settle for some vege burritos, but unfortunately, we only took pictures of the restaurant/bakery. I'd say it's really festive in there though and there were definitely happy guitarists and people in general. Omg you have to try their "bolillo" which is Mexican works for sour dough bread . It's soo soft and dense ! It's amazing ! We did have to buy the pearls, horn , and ears but the deal he gave us was better than any bakery around ! El Bueno Gusto made my daughters 15th birthday cake & it turned out exactly how we ordered it. This past weekend, we needed a last minute birthday cake made to look like the treat bags we were passing out. After going to a few local bakeries and being told "no we can't do that, you have to choose a design from our cake book." then the light in my head turned on like a switch and I said "El Buen Gusto!!" I drove over, spoke to the nice lady at counter, made my special request & in neither instance did they say "we can't do that." Each time, it was "yes, we can do what ever you want." I was very happy with my orders that I had to write this review. Their prices are reasonable. I love this bakery, I recommend this bakery and will definitely be back again! I will rewrite my review when I have an experience worthy of doing so: So I am planning to make tortas ahogadas for my birthday and they require a special type of bread, not just a regular roll. After a call to my favorite torta spot, Mexico Bakery, the attendant was kind enough to suggest El Buen Gusto. Strike number 1: I call this morning and whoever answered was totally rude, I asked how long the strip of bread {they bake} was (you can order strips which in Mexico gives you around 3 rolls) and how many pieces it would yield; she told me I had to go down to to the store to see how big it was. Strike number two: I asked how far in advance would I have to place the order because I needed the bread the following day, she says " oh yeah, you can put in the order an hour before you need it and we'll have it ready, no 30 minutes, no well the day of and we can have it ready'. I drive my happy self from Santa Clara to ESSJ, find the bakery and am ready to put in my order when the girl at the counter, different from the one who answered my call, serves me strike number 3: She calls the owner for the cost of this bread, he then informs her the baker who bakes the bread for tortas ahogadas will not be in until friday, except I needed the bread for Thursday!!!! Sure, it's my fault, I should've shopped around for this bread with ample time before my birthday party, however, the moral of the story is: the store clerks should know the specifics of special orders instead of misinforming potential customers! If you want to make tortas ahogadas, go to Boudin at Valley Fair, their sour dough will work just as well; it's a little pricier but you will for sure find the bread and not have to worry about ordering. I give them a two stars because the girl working the store in the afternoon was beyond helpful and the ham and cheese torta was tasty and reminded me of the one's my grandma makes back in Mexico. Very satisfied with the half-sheet tres leche cake with fresh strawberry filling which was beautifully decorated and they added my husband's Army picture no extra charge plus !! I explained it was my husband 70th birthday and I wanted a red, white and blue flag theme because he is veteran and a patriot... they suggested the picture and told me to text it to their cell phone later when I found the one I wanted. Happed across this place by accident and what a nice accident it was. Pretty large facility which seems like they knocked out a wall. There is a dining area, and a not so dining area and then more dining area with a long stretch bar like table top. Flatscreens to catch sports. The food is FANTASTIC! located in a dingy strip mall. this is my mexican friend's very favorite place to get pan dulce. it's located directly across the street from the larger pink elephant bakery, but i like this spot better. they have very long hours. 4 am to 10 pm daily, i believe. all the signs are in spanish. i've only dealt in cash, but they may take credit cards? they often have samples cut up on a tray to taste. came here once with cece c. we peppered the counter-woman with questions. she was friendly and helpful. chappurrado: like hot melted cinnamon choc pudding. they sell it seasonally. they also sell fresh squeezed juice, i think it's $4. it's a tiny hole in the wall, but it's packed with inexpensive pastries. focus is more on pan than on cakes. the employees all have thick accents, but have been very willing to explain the items to me. prices are not marked on the individual items, but there's a list on the wall. most are 50-70 cents. large bolillos are 3/$1. one weird thing they sell seems to be buttered bread with sugar sprinkled on top. conch was spongy soft, but i'm not into mexican pan in general. don't get the pastry shaped like a breast. the puddingy top was dry and gelatinous. my favorite was the vanilla cream filled triangle pastry. the flan is pretty fabulous too. a GIANT flan is only 15 bucks, good to bring to parties. a much smaller flan is $14 across the street at pink elephant. the largest cake i saw was pretty tiny, maybe 4x8 inches? they sell tamales by the dozen. and torta sandwiches to order. they now have a sister store in the berryessa neighborhood. it's a restaurant, not a bakery. same name. i tried their ceviche at the berryessa food fest and wasn't very impressed. they have the menu for the savory restaurant displayed here at the bakery. tax is included in the quoted price. read more
