Very much enjoyed. We went around 4pm and found a seat quickly (and without a reservation). We have a 2 year old, so that can be a problem for some nicer restaurants. Portabello's made us feel at home. The waitress was super nice and the owner came over and said hello. They offered a booster seat, so they are prepared. They didn't have a specific children's menu, but I'm sure they could figure something out if needed. As for food, very yummy. My husband-who is picky with Italian items--ordered the chicken parmesan and very much enjoyed it. I ordered the sea bass, which was the special (and not on the menu), and it was very fresh and delicious. The sea bass did have mushrooms, which I love, but I know some are not fans of mushrooms. I don't think the chicken had mushrooms, so you can probably find something non-mushroom if you try (or ask). The wine menu was great. I couldn't decide between two of the reds, so I asked for a taste of one of them...the waitress brought over a tasting of the two I was trying to decide upon. Came here on Thursday evening about 530 for dinner with the Mrs. place was relatively empty maybe two other tables were seated at the time we arrived. We were seated right away and ordered some wine and a calamari appetizer. The calamari was served on a bed of spicy peppers which I enjoyed very much however spicy doesn't go over well with my wife, she ate sparingly. We ordered the beef stroganoff entrée along with seafood Pescatore. The stroganoff was not what we expected. It was more of a beef stew with potato balls underneath. It was tasty but it wasn't beef stroganoff. The seafood dish I was also tasty but I was away ventured deeper into the bowl of pasta we noticed how salty it actually was. We finished up with the chocolate mousse cake which was delightful. I wife finished a glass of wine before we finished our entrées and she was not asked she would like another glass of wine and she also had to ask for her water to be refilled. Which would be understandable if the restaurant was full but with an empty restaurant and we thought closer attention might be paired to those details. It's a nice spot for an intimate dinner however there was a little bit left to be desired. All in all I would say this place is A-OK read more

Went tonight and ate at the bar. Food is outstanding, drinks are excellent and a wonderful ambiance. The Ginger Salmon and Gnocchi Carbonara were both excellent and the bread with roasted mushroom and Gorgonzola hummus was to die for. A must stop if you are in Kennett Square. read more

A story: Had dinner there during Christmas week 2017. It was cold. Restaurant was busy and we walked in behind a group of 8 and another couple. Owner was working hard to turn over the table for the 8- a jovial family who were getting in her way because it's a small restaurant. She was working hard, and clearly frazzled. She snapped at them. They were frustrating, but still. So she disappeared for a moment and made an attitude adjustment. Then she came back, apologized and got everyone seated. I say Brava, for clearly having a stressful night, but realizing how important it is to be a generous and thoughtful owner. Food was very good. Hearty, eclectic menu. It was a nice evening and I was very appreciative to see hard working owners adjusting when things aren't perfect. Thank you! Here's a thing: I get bummed out by slow service. I love cooking and the reason I eat out is if I don't feel like cooking and want to eat in the next 40 mins of reaching the restaurant. The food was alright given their ludicrous prices for Kennett Sq (its no Philly) but the Portobello fries were SO DAMN GOOOOD. If I have an hour and a half to wait for fries, I'd come back here. read more

Visited Portabello's a few times and while the food was ok, we have been disappointed in the service each time. The host and manager are a bit arrogant and would be better served with a more friendly approach and chipping in to help the servers, rather than making patrons wait for service. read more

We dined here for dinner on Saturday. I was very impressed that the owner held a fantastic table for us which was indoors yet completely open to the outside. So we were able to be inside during a storm, while still having fresh air. All the staff members were very nice. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Really just great. I went to Portabello's with my parents for dinner on a Saturday night- we were sat almost immediately. I started off with the black bean steak soup which was absolutely amazing, and chose stroganoff as my entree. While I'm not a big mushroom fan (I know), the meat was as tender as could be. This is the mushroom capital of the world and Portabello's is the KING of the hill on restaurants in the area. In fact, it's one of our top five of all time. (We eat out five nights a week.) We live in cream of crab soup country on the Chesapeake. We have had dozens of local entries from local establishments which define how good you are as a seafood restaurant. Mushroom soup is the currency of this area. Starting with the Mushroom Festival every September. Watch the lines form at different booths. The longest by far is Portabello's. Foodies galore in line happily waiting. Next. The owner proudly wears the Gordon Ramsey uniform as an extension of his love for food. The entire staff exudes their love for food and friendship. To illustrate this, I was given a container of rare black garlic as a gift by the chef who exudes foodie enthusiasm from every pore. Obviously, they own the territory of best mushroom soup, so we move into other mushroom delicacies (all normally priced) such as mushroom crepes. This is a top choice for last meal before heaven. Mushroom and crab entree. Mushroom fries. The bread is imported from Brooklyn fresh. Add infused olive oil in a dish or add infused garlic spiced butter, or gorgnazola hummus all delivered with every meal gratis. Best bread by FAR we tried in the entire state. Bring your own wine. The laws are not friendly to liquor licenses. This makes Portobello's an absolutely incredible value when you bring your favorite wine with you to be graciously served and stored in ice on your table. Beautiful quiet place. Great atmosphere. Fresh linen. Artful classic plates. This place is a textbook example of how to run a proper restaurant in a great location with INCREDIBLE local produce. Look at their menu. Finally, we are vegan/vegetarians. No problem. They worked our menu out and delivered a mushroom saute for the gods. This is a five star place with the right attitude. read more

My family had a reservation for six and our table was ready and we were seated immediately upon our arrival. The dining room was full and as I looked around all I saw were what appeared to be happy, satisfied guests having a wonderful time dining at this special establishment. We love this restaurant. We ate here many years ago and remembered how good it was, and I'm so glad we returned. We had the mushroom soup and beef stroganoff, made with short ribs, the meat so tender you could cut it with a fork. Fabulous experience! Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! The mushroom soup was hearty and flavorful! The summer salad has grilled seasonal probably local vegetables, and the vinegrette was most likely home-made and wonderful! The frittata was amazing with local mushrooms and my favorite gurriere cheese! So yummy ate way more then planned to eat. The service was top notch, and the direction of the restaurant had us in the shade with an afternoon breeze. Will definitely be going back! read more

Have been going to Portabello's for several years and we no longer feel like a guest, just a number now. Feel forced to go to the bar and will not seat unless entire party is there. I Stopped here on the insistence of a friend. At First, I was just going to have the Mushroom Soup, as per my friends suggestion. Guess What? Despite no reservations, and the restaurant being sold out, the staff accommodated me and my date to an outside table, which was alright by me. The service was so good, we decided to stay for the whole meal. Kennet Square, Known as the Mushroom Capitol of the US, will not disappoint when it comes to freshness!. What to do, the fried Portabello's, or the Mushroom Crepes. The nice couple (Locals) suggested the Crepes. They were Fabulous. Tender, delicious, mushrooms in a fantastic light cream sauce, gently tucked in a perfectly cooked crepe. Rich enough for two. Then came The DELICIOUS MUSHROOM SOUP!! The Soup was one of the Best I've ever had. Total Heaven in a Bowl! Now What to choose for dinner? Tough Choice. Duck or Lamb? I actually shared the Rack of Lamb with my date. Enough for two to share. Even though I normally have my Lamb prepared Rare, My date enjoys it Medium. Being the Gentleman I am, I capitulated. Perfectly cooked. Now for dessert. White Chocolate Carmel Sea Salt Crunch Cake. Ummm. Perfect to round out the meal. The whole meal was accompanied by Paradocx Vineyards, Barn Red WIne. A Great Choice From a local Vineyard. I submitted a glowing review of this restaurant from last autumn - though for whatever reason, it's gone. That said, this one is less-than-glowing. I called for Valentine's Day reservations. Perfect! Chatted at some length with the woman who answered the phone. Friday night arrives, we arrive promptly and are shown to our table... at which time we were told that the evening was fixe prix. NOW I'm finding out!?!?! Had I known before, I certainly would've requested more information around options. The menu that night consisted of four courses - each of which only allowed me a single choice due to dietary restrictions. It's important to note that their full menu easily accommodates me. I was livid. And of course, the whole purpose for choosing Portabello's was one very special entree my husband adores! He couldn't have it. The meal was decidedly average - which was new. Actually the only interesting thing that landed on our table was the usual mushroom hummus spread, and this mango and greens salad with candied walnuts and a citrus dressing. It should be moved to the dessert menu. So $200 poorer we sulked out, disappointed and dissatisfied. On a positive note, our server - like all of the servers at Portabello's - was an absolute delight. Thank you Mia! I'm rating this visit a 2-star experience. Our previous one was a definite 5-star. Amazingly friendly town that is taking the pandemic head on and blocking the square to provide patio dining that creates collaboration and community. The chef owners are awesome people (Sandra & chef husband) who have put love into the patio dining with excellent greenery to provide can added ambiance. The menu was creative and the flavors did not disappoint! The service was attentive and spot on. Contactless menu was nice during these times. Loads of cute little stores to browse if you come earlier to browse. The live jazz music was awesome and very much made it a memorable dining experience! Do NOT go to this place if you are single! They discriminate against you as you are only able to get a meal from the main menu if you sit in the dining room. So on Sat night when I was alone (does not matter what night it was) I could only order from the limited bar menu for a meal. I was hugely disappointed and the food was mediocre. Recommended by Hunt Magazine we were very pleasantly surprised by the lovely ambience and the superb food. As anticipated, located in mushroom country, a good bit of the menu has dishes incorporating mushrooms. As a starter delicious mushroom soup was perfect for a cold winters day. Since we were there for lunch and being of light appetites we ordered 2 appetizers to share which worked out perfectly. The mushroom crepe & the shrimp were well presented and flavorful with just the right seasoning. For dessert we shared the pomegranate cheesecake which was exactly the right way to conclude the meal. The owner/manager & wife to the chef was very gracious and came over to talk to us giving us a little history of the restaurant as well as the local scene in Kennett Square. We'll certainly be back soon. It's BYOB for now but they're moving to a bigger location just a little ways away in Jan 2019 which will have a small bar for cocktails and wine selections to complement the menu. Went yesterday for my daughter's 40th birthday party and had a great time as anticipated. Met all our expectations in the warm ambience, excellent service & the superlative food we all enjoyed. Amazing experience at Portabello's! This was our first time dining here. I went with my family who lives in Hockessin (I am based in Nyc). This was one of the absolute best meals we have had in a long time. I had the clams appetizer and seafood ravioli. My brother had the stroganoff, which was to die for !!! My entire family enjoyed their amazing meals. On top of the awesome food, the service went above and beyond. Both owners made a point to engage our family and ask us about our experience. The service was good and the food was decent but not exceptional. We had a nice evening there and found there were some rules -- for example, we couldn't order appetizers until the whole table was there and seated. For our situation they made an exception with one of our party running very late. While everyone was kind, the rules seemed a bit rigid. I also would have liked to find them on open table to make reservations that way. I would like to see more meatless options on their menu and I do not recommend the portabella fries. read more

I'd been looking forward to going here for quite some time. I was not impressed. The staff was ok, and the restaurant lovely, but the food was not worth the $180 the 3 of us paid. The $30(!!!) salmon was plain, the vegis had little spice, and I left their parched (no one filled our water). I had a lovely time with my friends but I won't be going back any time soon.
