Just fantastic. It's that simple. Very welcoming place with prime quality food with great flavors.

This review is for the take out service this restaurant is providing during the times of quarantine. Random trip to Kennett Square brought us to its main street lined with various restaurants. We glanced at the limited menu and decided to get our dinner to go at Portabello's. I called the place and was absolutely wowed by the service. Look, it's much easier to go above and beyond in face-to-face interactions. But the lady who answered the phone was so incredibly sweet and polite and personable. She was great at making some off the menu suggestions too. Additionally, she provided details about food handling safety. Level of service - superb. By the time we circled a few blocks around, our dinner was ready to be picked up . Clad in mask and gloves, a very pleasant young man handed us our take out. And because they ran out of plastic silverware, he gave us the real one wrapped in napkins! By the time we got home (took about an hour), we couldn't wait to devour the crispy duck and lobster ravioli. And wow !!!! The food was absolutely fantastic!! One of those cases when you can't eat anymore and still continue because food is THAT delicious. Verdict : we will go back there for dinner once the restrictions are lifted. Wow! Portabello's Restaurant represents the ultimate in dining experiences. Welcomed with a friendly greeting was a great beginning to our dining pleasure. The decor is beautiful from the custom bar to the exquisite lighting, and the atmosphere is fantastic. Our server was attentive and informative about Portabello's offerings. Our food was outstanding, presentation along with taste made our palate craving for more. The owners Chef Brett and Sandra check with their customers to make sure they are enjoying their meals and libations. Their bar menu is extensive including their wine selection. We drove over an hour to dine at Portabello's. We will happily be back very soon. read more

We shared the exotic mushroom crepe as our appetizer. Sorry no photo. We ate it before I thought to take a picture. It was so delicious. Had I known how delicious it was going to be, I would have ordered one for just myself. Then our warm bread with hummus Gorgonzola spread came out. For our entrees we order the stroganoff and pappardelle forestiere - both delicious and roasted veggies came with the meal (see photo). We usually don't order dessert let alone two separate desserts and we both ordered the caramel cake. Delicious. This place is BYOB currently. I love that a table for two is a nice size and spaced out. You don't feel like you are intruding on another couple. The owner/chef is very friendly. We came with a bottle of French champagne for a special celebratory lunch on a Friday afternoon.I love the fact that one of the owners, Sandra, is there to greet guests and chat for a bit. She is lovely. Lunch was delicious. We shared a number of menu items: Portabello fries, field greens salad with mango,stilton cheese & tangy citrus dressing, firecracker shrimp and a mushroom/roasted peppers wrap.So very good! Enjoyed a three layer caramel- toffee laced cake for dessert. Just couldn't resist. Fabulous food, excellent service, great ambience. Have not been him this area for a few years so I thought I'd check this place out again. I forgot how much I liked it. We had salads and entrees. The salads were exceptional. For entrees, my DH had the special, rainbow trout - said it was the best he's ever had. I had the veal Parmesan. Huge portion and absolutely delicious. Next time I'll bring a bottle of wine to go with our food. The service was excellent and the pace of service was just fine - did not feel like we had to wait long for our food. My wife and I had a very nice meal. I was craving seafood, but quickly changed directions when I saw the NY strip on the menu. It had been a while since I last treated myself to a nice steak and this is my favorite cut. The steak came perfectly medium rare and was seasoned just right. I wish I could give details on My wife's dish, a rustic noodle with mushroom ragout, but I didn't try it. She loved it, I just didn't want to interfere with the deliciousness of my dish. The table next to us had tried two fish "specials" one cod and the other a trout I believe, and raved to us about the meal. We had the pleasure of dining at one of the outside tables and enjoyed the people watching. A lovely dining experience. A friendly greeting at the door, and promptly seated. As it is BYOB, they poured one of my beers and chilled the other. The waiter was personable and knowledgeable. While he took our order, service was a group effort, as one waitress filled our water as needed, and yet another cleared plates, despite a very busy night. My wife and I each got the daily salad special, which was terrific. Salad greens, tomatoes, pesto, and a wonderful burrata. My wife enjoyed the short rib stroganoff, while my veal madeira was excellent, with lovely roasted seasonal vegetables. All told, a marvellous meal. read more

Brett Hulbert and Sandra Morris are the nicest chef and restauranteurs who have realized the perfect balance of excellent menu and attentive and friendly service. From the moment you walk in to your dramatic exit waddle, the drinks, menu, and fare are a true delight. Highly recommend the ravioli, stuffed with the right balance of cheese and mushroom, and served slightly dry with just the right amount of sauce, to the flavorful seasonal salad, balanced delicately with greens, and an assortment of appropriate textures and taste, to the entree (duck breast seared the right way), and a decadent, rich flourless chocolate cake. Even the bread is thoughtful, fresh from the oven, accompanied by a housemade mushroom cheese spread. We will return, again, and again! Thank you! read more

En route to Longwood Gardens, we dined here based on a friend's recommendation. TheIr customer service was great & making reservations was a snap. The waiter service was great, decor was nice, and beer was good. We got apps of steamed mussels and mushroom soup which were excellent. Beyond that, the caesar salad had a strange pickle taste instead of tasting like Parmesan cheese. Chicken parm (hard to mess up) was flat and large which made it a bit chewy, with minimal linguini. Tomato sauce was not cooked down but rather raw, chunky & acidic. If you cook Italian food, you know what I mean. My Arnold Palmer tasted bland and bitter. The scallops were pretty good, very rich. The rice was dry and vegetable medley was not great. My son's State Street burger arrived burnt. So overall, we give it a B- to a C. They need to raise the bar a bit and they'll be on their way to getting an A. read more

Awesome restaurant! We live in NY and it was our first time back in Kennett Square in many years. The last time we visited we ate at Portobellos and absolutely loved it, so we decided to return, and we are so happy that we did. We ordered the Portobello fries as an appetizer and they were crispy and delicious with an amazing horseradish dipping sauce. For entrees we had the duck and the stroganoff and both were perfect as well. The duck was one of the best we have had with crispy delicious skin. The stroganoff was served in a delicious deconstructed sauce of sorts with a sour cream drizzle on top. Delicious! Finally the chocolate mouse cake for dessert. Rich chocolate, not too dense, and not too light with delicious home made whipped cream on top. They also are BYOB with only a $5 corkage fee per table, which we took advantage of and we are happy we did! You must try this restaurant! read more

Molto bouno!!! This place is great, when I walked through the doors I immediately felt like I got teleported to Italy and I started speaking Italian. Every time I go there I'm impressed with the staff and the owner. The food never disappoints

We were in Kenneth Square to enjoy their annual Mushroom Festival (always the weekend after Labor Day). To my surprise this little town has some excellent restaurants and brew pubs to enjoy. One of the better restaurants is Portabello's. Their menu is a sophisticated combination of offerings which if anything like what my wife and I had are all tremendous. Add terrific service to the mix and you have the makings of a wonderful night out. For those unfamiliar with dining in the area many..but not all...of the restaurants are BYOB. That was the case here...but for $3.00 they gladly serve your wine or beer...and I think I saw one man bring a flask for a cocktail. Don't let that fool you...this is a wonderfully classy experience on all fronts. read more

Have had burgers for lunch here several times. The time to get your food can be a little on the longer side but that's fine, burgers were quite good. Staff was very pleasant. Was pretty quiet at lunch so I guess they do more business for dinners. One time I had the wrong burger come out and they wrapped up the wrong one for me and made the right one and apologized profusely. The "wrong" burger was quite good too :). Will be back again! Good food and service. One disturbing thing that happened is that I tipped cash and wrote that in on the receipt. When I got my CC bill they added a 20% tip. I left $30.00 cash on a $110.00 check. So I tipped $55.00 and am not happy about that. read more

I was so disappointed , we started with the French onion soup and portobello mushroom , the soup was no hot and the soup was so salty we couldn't finish it, the mushroom was really greasy and over seasoned . We then had the pork roast with cranberries and beef stroganoff and the vegetable of the day was radishes, potatoes, carrots and edamame blend. The pork was flavorless and just not good. The beef was way over seasoned and all you could taste was the fried onions , the vegetables were way over cooked way over seasoned. We didn't finish either of them. The owner came by once he said he would be back, he never came back. I'm pretty sure he overheard me say that the food was just ok. Our waitress Autumn had no personality , she had to notice that we weren't eating our food, never asked how it was and she never came back to thank us. The owners wife dropped the bill, she never asked us either, and she picked up the bill. I'll never go back and I will never recommend this place . I honestly feel as though this guy is a fraud, he never went to culinary school, which is ok. He said he traveled all over and worked at numerous restaurants and learned many different cuisines. read more

My wife and I ate here on Friday night October 18. The food was excellent although the bread was not warm. Overall the food could not have been better. However I am downgrading to 3 stars for the noise level. They are in a new location with tile floors and virtually no sound absorbing surfaces. You cannot hear your dinner partner speak. Norah Jones was playing over the sound system, but I only knew that because I had to go to the bathroom and I could hear her there. We went here for a birthday dinner. The front house staff was friendly and very attentive-they even figured out it was a birthday dinner without our telling them and brought cake and candle for dessert. Servers were attentive even though it was busy. The duck with cherries was outstanding and I could have eaten several more bowls of the mushroom bisque. We even asked for double of the mushroom spread for the bread. The restaurant is a little loud, but warm and cozy. We'll definitely come back! read more

In "The Godfather, Part 2", small time hood and extortionist Don Fanucci mentions to a young Vito Corleone that he "just wants to wet his beak." Seeing that Vito is the up and coming star in the shakedown and organized crime rackets, the Don merely wants to reach a gentlemen's agreement and go back to impeccable white suits and large plates of pasta. Sadly, Vito thinks otherwise and poor Don F. ends up meeting his demise at the wrong end of a burning towel. Now, none of this has anything to do with the delicious food you will experience at Portabello's, save for a common love of Italian fare and nice clothes that your writer shares with the aforementioned Don. Located right in the heart of Kennett Square with plenty of on-street parking, Portabello's served up a delicious bowl of mussels in a white sauce with grilled bread that was perfect for dipping. The truly righteous crab cake appetizer (this was an entree item but the kitchen obliged my request to have it as an appetizer) was followed up by a wonderful rendition of garlic shrimp over squid ink linguine. Sadly, my companion's tuna steak was cooked just a bit over rare, thereby knocking off what would've been a five star experience. We had raised seats right next to the kitchen, and every other tuna steak was cooked to perfection, so just a small glitch (our cut of tuna was a little too thin for the flame blackened outside, which was delicious). So, if you find yourself at Longwood Gardens or the Kennett Square area, be sure to stop by Portabello's. As they are BYOB, you'll need your favorite Pinot Grigio or perhaps Chianti. While a white fedora is not necessary, if you happen to see another diner in the restaurant with one don't be alarmed if he comes over to dip his bread in your mussel broth. Dropped in for lunch with 4 friends on a Sunday afternoon after a visit at Longwood Gardens. We were promptly and warmly greeted and seated in a quiet corner. We were treated to attentive, professional service start to finish. Every dish we tried, appetizers through dessert, was delicious. Last night, the wife and I chose to go to Portabello's in Kennett Square. First thing, we were late due to traffic, we called ahead since we had reservations and they were very accommodating. Second, it's a BYOB which we always enjoy because we can concentrate on the food versus worrying about what to drink. For appetizers we had: Mushroom Crepes - very earthy and light Portabella fries - deep fried but very tasty as it was paired with horseradish cream. Both of them were very tasty and delicious. I also had: Reishi soup - very good and yummy...very earthy and deep broth tasting. For our main course we had: Rustic Noodle - earthy mushroom in brown gravy with long homemade noodles Seared Squid in a red sauce over pasta, served with a side of sauté seasonal vegetables. The portions were excellent, hearty and filling. For desert we shared: Peanut butter brittle ice cream One word --- YUMMY The entire experience was really nice. We would call this fine dining in a casual atmosphere. The service was top notch and everything tasted great. Keep in mind the theme is mushrooms but the menu is diverse enough that if you don't like mushrooms to try something else. It was worth the trip. read more

I choose this restaurant based from a local hotel and the prior reviews here. I am glad I did. From the moment I made the reservation by phone I was impressed by the caring attitude. When my wife and I arrived that same attitude was confirmed in every aspect of the visit. I don't know when I have visited a restaurant and felt so welcome. Sandra (the hostess) and her husband (the chef) are the owners and doing everything they can to make customers feel like they are honored guests-including speaking with them and explaining the aspirations for the food their clients experience. The wait staff (Mia and Autumn who attended us) are similarly positive. While the restaurant's name may evoke thoughts of endless mushrooms from the mushroom capital of the USA, the food is far more eclectic and worthy of the most discerning palette. The ambience is unpretentious, but the flavors and dishes have a uniqueness of a great restaurant in a major city in the world. No one will be disappointed dining here. We were so impressed we dined on May 9th and May 10th. Our only lament is we do not live nearby, otherwise we would be with them once a week just to enjoy the attention--without mentioning the food which is really exquisite. Bill Marshall read more

My boyfriend took me here for my 28th birthday. Its a cute little restaurant right in the heart of Kennett Square. It's BYOB which I love because you can bring your favorite wine. I had their mushroom soup and Salmon Wellington, and my boyfriend had their French onion soup and Lemon Chicken. Our meals were so delicious and flavorful! And hospitality was outstanding! Love this place! A wonderful place for special occasion (don't forget to let them know!) or just a really nice meal out. The food has been consistently outstanding and the owners and waitstaff are friendly and accommodating. While not cheap, prices are definitely reasonable for food and a restaurant of this caliber and because it's BYOB you'll have more money to spend on food! It's a smaller, more intimate place, so your best bet is to get a reservation - especially on weekends or special occasions. Highly recommended! read more

This is a lovely restaurant with great food. I have eaten there two times with very different experiences. My first visit was with a friend and we sat in the front of the restaurant. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The server brought out an ice bucket for our wine right away and poured for us throughout the meal. I should mention that it was a Saturday night and already getting full at the early hour of 6:30. I don't remember what my companion ordered, but I had the mushroom crepe for an appetizer and the crab cakes for an entree. They also brought us out bowls of mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes to share. This was one of the best meals and restaurant experiences I have had in a long time. Our server was so professional and friendly. We split the salted caramel cake for dessert and the check was so reasonable for the quality of the food and the dining experience. The owner came to our table twice and asked if we were enjoying ourselves. I wish I could say that my second visit was as satisfying. I had an out of town guest from San Francisco and wanted to bring her to a great local place. It's kind of intimidating to try to impress someone from that city with regards to restaurants. I called to make a Tuesday night reservation at 6:30 again. I asked if we could sit at the Chef's table since I had heard so many great things about that. I was told that the "first" Chef's table was already reserved, but that we could have the second one. I thought that would be fine. Do not ever make that mistake. I ordered exactly what I had eaten the first time I was there because the memory of that dinner was so good. My friend ordered the beet salad and the chicken parm. We had forgotten the wine (boo!) so we ordered Pelligrino with lime on the side. The lime never arrived. My mushroom crepe was as delicious as the previous meal but half the size. I'm trying to wrap this up so will say that the food was very good and the young man who was our server could not have been nicer. However, my companion's entree was so huge it was falling off the plate and slightly scorched on one side. It reminded me of a regular casual red sauce Italian restaurant that prides itself on quantity, not quality. She said it was good but she ate about a quarter of it. The server asked if we would like it wrapped to go which we certainly did and it disappeared and never returned. Our bad for forgetting it. Towards the end of the meal I was served a bowl of mashed potatoes but most of the other people in the restaurant which was full were also given a bowl of Brussels sprouts. So I had no green vegetable. The most disturbing part of the dining experience, if you are still with me, was that the "second" Chef's table was directly across from the serving station and it was so loud with the loud crashing of plates and servers coming back and forth that we literally could not talk. No one came to see how our dinner was going. The Chef/owner himself spent at least 15 minutes talking to the "first" Chef's table but never glanced at us. So there were three strikes that night. I will definitely go back to Portobellos but will always ask for a table in the front and be more assertive about anything that is a problem. I was disappointed that I had spoken so highly of the place to my guest because the second visit was quite different from the first. read more

My friend picked the restaurant and I couldn't have been happier! We went on a Saturday around 1pm. Portabello's is a BYOB. Before we had lunch, we went across the street to the wine store (the sales lady was also very nice and helpful with picking out our wine to accompany the menu). I had the Rustic Egg Noodles that includes their signature mushrooms. My friend had one of the specials - Chicken with goat cheese and arugula wrap. Both dishes were delish!! There are many things to love about this restaurant. Warm inviting ambience; friendly and attentive service; and BYOB. The food is good, but just fall short of being great. Maybe my expectation was raised a little too high due to the rave reviews. Calamari and portobello fries were both tasty but both heavy on the breading. My duck with cherry reduction is a little bland while both chicken dishes with pasta were mediocre. The ginger shrimp also was a little unflavored. Overall it was just ok. read more

I struggle between 3 and 4 stars here. I finally made it to Kennett Square and wanted mushroom soup. This was the only place in the "downtown" area that was both open and had mushroom soup on the menu. We were a little nervous when we walked in because we were among the only people there, but the place filled up as the afternoon progressed. I had the mushroom soup and a chicken wrap. The soup was fantastic. TONS of mushrooms in it. The soup alone was worth the visit. The chicken wrap was pretty good, but not great. Still, I enjoyed my meal. My biggest gripe was the slow pace of the entire meal. On the one hand, it was obvious that everything was made to order, and that was appreciated. On the other hand, at some point I did want to leave. It took a very long time for our food to come out. I got my soup, and there was at least 15 minutes between me finishing that and our lunch actually arriving. The couple who sat next to us waited at least 15 minutes before they were finally able to order. The only reason I won't knock off a star based on service is that it was clear the server was working his butt off. He was running around and handling the entire restaurant on his own. The kitchen staff was moving pretty slowly, and no one else was there to help him, so it's not as if he was sitting around doing nothing. Bonus points to him for chasing after a couple who left without taking their credit card, even though he was already so swamped. He was also very friendly. Overall, a nice experience. If I'm back in Kennett Square, I might try something else for variety's sake, but this is a great option and I will keep it on my list of places to eat. read more

Stopped here for lunch while visiting Pennsylvania over Easter. We decided to visit Longwood Gardens and this was the perfect place to stop for lunch. The decor is nice, cloth napkins and tablecloths. It's a small cozy cafe. The service was awesome, friendly owner and waitress who made sure we had what we needed. My husband enjoyed talking with the owner about the mushrooms and where they get them from. We were there for lunch so most of the offerings were sandwiches. We had a party of five dining and tried the Reuben, Lobster Ravioli, Portabello burger, and oyster stew. I tried the ham and bean soup before my main dish came and it was very tasty! My husband loved his Oyster Stew. The sandwiches were all very good and made with quality ingredients. If we get a chance to return to Kennett Square we will definitely go here again. Maybe for dinner since that is when the chef really shines according to the owner. read more

Wowser. This place rocks. Friendly and warm service and good, credible personal recommendations by the waitress (not the most expensive dishes) and we weren't disappointed. Butternut squash ravioli is wonderful and the blackened tuna medium rare was sublime. We sat at the high table near the kitchen and witnessed dish after dish of fantastic food being prepared - and these guys have fun in the kitchen. First time visitors and we had the best meal. Salads were so tasty. The mushroom crepe was so sweet and mouth watering. All of our entrees were a '10'. The scallops were grilled to perfection.
