Portabello is a very cute classy restaurant located in the quiet Mushroom capital of Kennett Square. As the name implies, Portabello's Restaurant gives a cute vintage classy restaurant with whimsical mushroom decor near the windows. Portabello specializes in any dishes that have mushroom but also has variety of dishes without the mushrooms. I ordered the Shrimp & Mushroom Risotto and it was aesthetically decorated for the eyes and tasted really creamy which masked the mushrooms and shrimp. In addition, I got a New York cheesecake which looked and tasted quite decadently. My mom (a big fan of all things mushroom) and I stopped by here for an early dinner Saturday night. They were pretty busy and booked up for the evening, so we decided to grab two seats at the bar. We took a look at the menu and decided to try a couple of appetizers and ordered two entrees. We ordered the mushroom soup, KSQ Caesar salad, the burger, and the crab cakes. Service was ridiculously inattentive to the point where it was a joke. I'm a pretty understanding person when it's a busy night and there are large parties happening. I worked in the restaurant industry and grew up in the restaurant industry. I get it. It took an hour and the couple next to us getting their food and me knowing they ordered at least 30 minutes after us for me to speak up finally to the manager. And the response I got from the manager was her rudely cutting me off when I'm explaining my frustration and "graciously" taking off the salad from the bill. At this point, I'm fuming, the entrees come out, and the burger was burnt on the outside and dry, clearly from a rush delivery situation. We were ignored nearly the entire evening. The bartenders didn't even ask us ONCE if we needed a refill on anything and never checked on us ONCE. This was definitely a one and done situation, so disappointing on so many levels, and one of the least enjoyable meal experiences I've had in a very long time. read more

Meal at Portabellos was great because of the food, ambiance, and service. We made a reservation ahead of time and were seated right away when we arrived. Server was attentive and they had people walking around refilling water the entire time. Food was reasonably priced and delicious. The risotto was a bit oily but still delicious. Had the beef stroganoff this time. The braised short ribs are supremely tender, and the touch of truffle is pleasant, without being overpowering. The sauce itself is very good. The restaurants signature mushrooms help complete the dish. The toffee and caramel cake was bursting with sweetness and dark notes from the caramel/toffee. tl;dr a sophisticated spot in Kennett Square, incorporating locally-sourced ingredients into upscale Italian fare Nestled amongst boutiques and cafes in the downtown, Portabello's is the premier dinner spot in Kennett Square. The space is divided into a bar / patio toward the front, with a large dining space in the back. Despite fitting numerous four-seater tables, the ambiance remains intimate. The orange walls are illuminated by candlelight and intricate stained-glass chandeliers. Live piano music plays unobtrusively amongst the buzz of the conversation throughout the room. During my visit, my party of four arrived at 6PM on a weekend night. Make sure to make a reservation -- I overheard the hostess taking a call and saying that they were all booked up for the night. Our service was friendly without being overbearing. We decided to split everything mushroom on the menu: the Roasted Mushroom Soup, the Exotic Mushroom Crepe, the Portabello Fries, the Portabello Flatbread, the Pappardelle Forestiere, and the Stroganoff. The soup had a creamy, wine-infused broth, decorated with shallots and large chunks of mushroom and culminating in a rich, earthy flavor. The crepe was soft and chewy, drizzled with a savory mushroom-cream sauce -- while it was pleasant, I must confess that its flavor profile was very similar to the soup. The fries had a meat-like texture, surrounded by a crispy panko coat like an upscale order of onion rings. These were complemented nicely by a not-overwhelming horseradish aioli. Shifting gears, the flatbread was the low of our meal -- it was overly dry and could've used a sauce to tie together the crisp of the bread and the crunch off the asparagus. Back to the good stuff, our pappardelle was served al dente with a thin garlic sauce, then topped with generous portions of mushrooms and goat cheese. Finally, our stroganoff was served with a strong brandy sauce, with but a hint of mushroom. The meat itself was somewhat tough, but the potato dumplings were an interesting addition. Admittedly, none of us were stuffed by the end of our meal, surprising considering the cost (especially of the entrees). Moreover, while I don't regret sampling the many mushroom items on the menu -- that's why we went to Kennett Square, after all -- be warned that many of them will prepare the mushrooms in a very similar way. With a name like Portobello's, I expected some more variety in the dishes featuring Kennett Square's claim to fame. read more

Came to Portabello as a way to end my evening visiting my friends out in Kennett Square. On a Saturday evening we were sat outside when there was adequate seating inside, but unsure if all of those tables were reserved. My friend and I shared the Chicken Parmesan and the Gnocchi. At first the gnocchi tasted amazing and full of flavor, but as I went through the meal, the dish tasted saltier and saltier and the heavy amounts of bacon didn't help either. The gnocchi was extremely filling, I'll say, and the portions can be deceiving. The chicken parmesan was much lighter than the gnocchi. While it was not phenomenal, I preferred it over the gnocchi. Our service was great and we were tended to very well. Overall, Potabello's is not a bad spot if you want a nice dinner in Kennett Square, however just because you are paying for much higher prices at this place does not guarantee that the quality of the food matches it. read more

We have been in Kennett Square for almost 3 months now and vowed that we would try every restaurant here. Last night was Portabello's turn and it was delicious. The front windows were open to the fresh warm spring air outside and they had a musician playing live music. Wonderful. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and checked on us frequently. As a starter we ordered the fried calamari. It was served with marinara and mixed with fried banana peppers. It was crunchy, spicy and had the right amount of seasoning. Two concerns I had was the octopus was a slightly over-cooked and there could've been a little more on the plate. For entrees, my family ordered the chicken parmesan and shrimp and mushroom risotto. The chicken on the parm was a little over-cooked. If it was cooked properly when it came out of the oven, it continued to cook as it sat upon the hot spaghetti. Maybe serve the spaghetti on the side? Other than that, the dish was flavorful and cheesy and I absolutely loved the sauce. It was bright and salty and there was plenty of it. The risotto was cheesy, creamy and cooked well. The cheese used was an Asiago and it was not overpowering. You could taste the mushroom and cheese in every bite. Our only issue here was that the shrimp was inside the risotto instead of on top and they were served tails on. I think that's a no no unless it's a shrimp cocktail. Customers should not have to fish through their risotto to take tails off of shrimp. Finally, I ordered the crispy duck and it was perfect! It was glazed in a cherry, Grand Marnier, Merlot reduction and it was sticky, sweet and delicious. Even with the glaze, the duck skin was still crispy. Thank you chef! For dessert, we left with a blueberry crumble cheesecake. They didn't have dessert on the menu but surely had enough to offer. You should know that I am a chocoholic and, although they had 3 chocolate dessert options, I went with the cheesecake and was not disappointed. It would have been perfect if served with a little blueberry compote. In my opinion. Ok, I'm done! Portabello's is a must try. When you go, make sure to try a specialty cocktail or 2. I wanted to go all out with mushroom and was excited for their dinner special. When the waitress found out the special was out, she apologized and tried to see if anything else can be made. The hostess came and recommended to make something off menu to ease my cravings (preggo cravings). The food was delicious and top notch. We had the mango salad, mushroom pizza, and mushroom Alfredo (off menu). All were excellent. I also liked that it was an open kitchen which I personally appreciate. We had an excellent dinner here on Friday night! The new location is great--a huge upgrade. The bar area is spacious, and there is a nice divide between the bar and the restaurant. There is also a semi-private room for larger parties. In a separate section of the restaurant, there is "the library," which is a space with a few more tables around a fireplace that is quieter, intended for people who are hard of hearing (a GREAT idea!!). Apparently Tuesdays are still BYOB. We ordered cocktails (had to take full advantage of the new liquor license!). I had the Opening Night, which was really good, although I liked my fiance's drink better--he ordered Portabello's take on a mojito. For our meals, I ordered the chicken parmesan, and others ordered the burger, the steak, and risotto. Everyone enjoyed their food. I'll try something more adventurous next time, but had been really in the mood for chicken parm and I was not disappointed. The portion size was huge. The sauce was delicious, and the pasta was a perfect al dente that I can never seem to recreate at home. It's nice that in addition to more artistic foods, as an Italian restaurant, Portabello's still has some of the classics on the menu. For young professionals living in the borough, the new Portabello's is a welcome addition. We enjoyed a reasonably-priced-for-the-quality double date, in an atmosphere that felt younger than most places in the area (and that offered better food than the places that are more millennial-focused). To be clear, there was a really good mix of ages eating there. But I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the mango ginger salad; the perfect juiciness, seasoning, and crunch of the hamburger; the flavor and crunch of the fries; and the house-made tiramisu made by the guy from Naples. It all made sense when co-owner Sandra explained that her husband, a former resort chef, worked at a number of high-end places. There was live music and tasteful Christmas decorations. We shared a green salad with beets and they split the plate for us onto two. I love that. My mom and I ate lunch here over Mother's Day weekend, and we were both very impressed! This means a lot because my mom doesn't typically go out to restaurants much. The location is prime but the lack of space makes it hard to get a reservation last minute. Luckily they are moving to a larger location on the same street! We split their salad special to start, which was the best part of the meal! It included lightly fried scallops, asparagus and mixed greens with a lemon vinaigrette homemade dressing. The dressing was evenly mixed into the salad and was so delicious that they would make a ton bottling and selling it! I usually don't eat scallops and was planning to give them to my mom, but I ended up devouring them that's how tender they were. We also split a special shrimp pasta dish and the crab cake for our mains. The crab cake was genuine jumbo lump, but my only complaint was that it could have been bigger or included two of that size for an entree dish. Otherwise it would be better suited to order as an appetizer. For dessert we had a cake slice that they bring in from a bakery in Philly. Delicious! We couldn't have enjoyed lunch more, and ate every last bite. The chef was kind enough to stop by our table and chat for awhile too. We will definitely be visiting their new location! read more
