My brother and I were visiting from San Diego, after Rafting with the Chugach Center (spectacular by the way, must try) we headed down the road for a celebratory brew. This place is really cool, kind of old style bar, met a local, John ( I think that's his name) told us all about looking for gold in the rivers., great guy. Over the river and through the woods to SEAVIEW CAFÉ WE GO. Seriously great, homey spot in this fun little historic town. Probably the only bar in town, but a great one. Great beer on tap, served in a nice mason jar. Food is shockingly good. They could easily phone-it-in here, but they don't. Bartender is always friendly and the bar is always filled with potential friends. I once chatted with a real-life gold miner for a couple hours. This cafe has the most outrageous view, set right off the mudflats in Hope. The food is fresh and delicious. Great local beer selection. Awesome ambiance. Super clean. Staff was friendly and service was great (we sat down at the same time as a party of 20 and everything still came out timely). Holy hell, was this place fantastic! Was told by one of the guys that works for Nova River Runners to go here for lunch - and boy, am I glad we did. This establishment is situated in a small historic city - "Hope City" - that was originally a mining camp established in 1896. It is completely unassuming and so quaint, it was absolutely fantastic. The water is served in mason jars. The service was friendly and fast without that rushing you out the door feeling. The fresh Alaskan fish was plentiful and served every way possible. The food was just delicious. If you're anywhere near Hope - or driving down the Seward Highway - this place is certainly worth the 17 mile drive off the beaten path! Oh, and I hear they have live music on the weekends AND that the Nova guys hang out there - which is enough to make me want to go more often!! Go! Go! Go! read more

I rode the Gull Rock trail (better hike it - not great for bikes) and I was hungry. The librarian recommended the Reuben at the Seaview and she was right! I am not one to order Reuben sandwiches on a whim, so I was a little nervous. But it was fantastic. The woman next to me was visiting a friend (bartender) and had been there for lunch and dinner. Hmm so my last encounter at the Seaview was great for me, but not for my honey.... an aquaintaince that just happened to be seated on the patio next to us ordered the halibut and chips. It looked beautiful, nicely portioned and tasty. So my love ordered it and when it came out it was literally half the size and the chips were just burnt dregs that were inedible. It was really shocking... I should have taken a picture of them side by side. I can't believe we paid 24 dollars for the pile of nonsense. On the other hand, my rueben was fan-ucking-tastic... as good if not better than the ones from the Jewish delis back home in Jerz. But again, my chips were just a pile of shit. Burnt dregs from the fryer...but it didn't matter because my sandwich was so frickin big. And our server was seriously taxed and it took forever for her to swing back around and check on us and eventually get the check and whatnot. But I was okay with the waiting cause its Hope and everything moves really slowly here which is actually kinda refreshing. We were there from the dinner to bar/live music transition so it was a little chaotic and entertaining to watch. The non bar dining side is very small and poorly ventilated so oce they close the patio for music, I would not recommend eating there unless it's a cool day and you don't mind waiting. read more

Very cute. Certainly the only thing in this little town. The staff was sweet, the view incredible from the bar. The rest of the restaurant has a mountain view, no water, which is still pretty but not"sea view" Menus simple. Fries Are dynamic. Salad dressing is great, but some of my lettuce was browning on the corners and that turns me off. My husband have the report of amazing chowder!! So go ahead and get some fries and chowder. Oh and the wings too! Just avoid salads. Who wants to be healthy anyway? read more

I was supprised looking at the other reviews that none are written by anyone from Alaska. Looks like it is time to fix that. We headed down to Hope for a weekend camping/hiking trip arriving Friday evening with the plan of grabbing some food and hopes of catching some music at the Seaview. So once we got ourselves set up, we headed into town around 7:00 pm. The Seaview Cafe is a quaint little place, that certainly has the look and feel of a sea side joint, perfectly eclectic and welcoming. We ordered a big cesar salad, some hot wings, and a halibut fish & chips with the plan to share it all. The food came out quickly, tastey and well prepared. The cesar was especially good and the portion was very generous. The wings were good, pretty spicy, but very wet with sauce. Very good if you prefer that style, but I like mine a little drier. The fish & chips was also very good, breaded in panko and served up with the darkest, crispyist fries I have ever had. That may sound like they were overcooked in frier oil that is overdue for changing, but I assure you it is not the case- these fries are great! After dinner we went out on the deck to soak in the sun and enjoy the two performers playing and singing and had a couple more beverages from the bar. The whole experience made for a perfect evening which is why I can't believe that more folks from Alaska aren't writting about their own experiencesenjoying this gem. Maybe no one wants to tell the secret. We'll be back sooner next time. read more

This was the first place we stopped to eat upon arriving in Alaska. It's a nice spot with good atmosphere and live music (at least on the Thursday night we were there). First, the good. The French fries are amazing. I don't know why, but they're really good. My kids both got the halibut sandwich, and it was a huge portion. They both really enjoyed it. I ordered a bowl of fish chowder ($11). While it was delicious, the portion was pretty small, there was not a lot of fish/seafood, and it was Luke warm at best. We had landed a couple hours earlier in anchorage, arriving from Atlanta - a long day, so I was hungry and tired. Which leads to the bad... I asked the waiter whether I should get the halibut sandwich or the halibut fish n chips. He said the fish n chips was a good bit larger of a portion than the sandwich. Wrong. My halibut was a good bit smaller than the sandwich portion my kids got (not to mention it was portioned in about 6-8 small halibut chunks). On top of that, their sandwich was $18, and my fish and chips was $28. Of my 6-8 chunks of halibut, at least 2-3 were overlooked because of the size differential, so they were dry. Complete rip off - do NOT order the fish n chips...go with the sandwich, or something else entirely. Lastly, we sat outside. The sun was blazing hot, and was right in our face. They had no shade or umbrella, so be warned. Additionally, there were flies everywhere. I expect some bugs when eating outside, but this was a straight-up ambush. They had no bug zapper, and no deterrent, like hanging bags filled with water, or other natural remedies. I wanted to like this place more, because it's in the middle of nowhere, and I like to support small businesses, but I would not go back. read more

After attending a wedding reception at the Hope Social Hall, my girlfriend and I ambled down the street to the Seaview. It's definitely as described...an old wooden building with a stage/deck built off of it. Rustic. Charming. A good mix of Alaskan beers. Just don't expect any cocktails. Cool place! This place is perfect for its setting in Hope. It has a very old-timey feel, and as soon as you walk into it, it feels like you've been taken into the past. A grand piano and a bookshelf adorn the walls, as do old pictures of the town. The menu is limited but everything on it is very good. The fish and chips stand out - the fresh-caught halibut is flaky and has a nice light breading, and the fries are hot and crispy. Would absolutely recommend stopping here. read more

15 years ago, on my honeymoon, my wife and I stopped here for lunch. To this day, I can't remember what the heck we were doing in Hope but I CAN describe the Reuben Sandwhich I ate for lunch. Fantastic! I don't know why it was so good, maybe because it was the first time I tried a Reuben, but ever since I have tried to find a Reuben as good and failed. So this review of Seaview Cafe is 5 stars for the wonderful Reuben (albeit 15 years ago). There are limited restaurant choices in Hope, Alaska, and the business hours can be inconvenient for visitors. All venues are rustic and casual with a limited menu. A local recommended Seaview Cafe but we were not expecting much because it was a local watering hole. The bar and restaurant are located in historic buildings with several coats of peeling paint and the original windows with the wavy glass. They serve craft beer and the usual bar food, BUT the fresh halibut dishes are phenomenal! Halibut fish and chips and Caesar salad with grilled halibut are magically delicious;-) We appreciate the quality of the food and the server was friendly and prompt. We have a new favorite restaurant in Hope. read more

There aren't that many choices in Hope, so expectations can't be that high. Seaview is a small cafe with about 7 tables and, at the time we were there, 1 server. This was one of Hope's busier weekends because of the 5K race on Sunday (we were there on Saturday). I think prior reviews of this place may have been inflated because of hunger after hiking. We, too, came here after a hike on Gull Rock trail. I got the halibut sandwich ($16) which was a grilled piece of halibut. The portion was average and nothing special. The food took a long time to come out, and with one server, trying to get her attention for water was nearly impossible. She flat out disappeared for a while too, likely not her fault, but that meant the entire restaurant was without a server for a bit. The check also took a long time to come out. And then our friends who had hiked Hope Point (a really intense hike) came in to eat, and their food took even longer to arrive. It's a busy weekend, they should have more servers than 1. All in all unremarkable food, lacking service, but one of the only restaurants in town. read more

This place is worthy of 5 plus stars. I'm not sure what any given traveler's expectations are for a small little establishment in a teeny tiny little town in Alaska, but I can say mine were definitely exceeded. To start with, how cool is it that this place is located in one of the town's original buildings, built in 1896?! They have done such a wonderful job of maintaining the charm and antiquity of this place, yet it's clean (so very clean!) and cozy. Our server was excellent right from the get-go, full of smiles, conversational, friendly, helpful, she deserves 5 stars on her own. Not to mention, she did a wonderful job putting up with some pretty snooty folks at the surrounding tables! The food was impeccably fresh and oh so tasty. We split the chowder which was superb and we each got a plate of fish and chips. The fries were some of the best fries we have ever had in a restaurant. Crispy on the outside, but nice and soft on the inside and seasoned perfectly. The halibut was perfectly cooked, and again crispy on the outside, yet flaky and moist on the inside. Also, it would be a shame not to mention the great selection of local AK beers on tap! We live in Anchorage, and my husband has wanted to check out Hope for quite some time. At first glance, I asked, "Why again?" but I would return to Hope just to eat at this establishment in a heartbeat. read more

We ate at the Seaview for dinner while visting Hope and had a great time. The food is rather expensive but that is to be expected in small, isolated Alaskan towns. Regardless, the food was worth the price as it was delicious. The fries are particularly good. My wife and I each got the 1/2 burger and enjoyed it greatly. They also have a good selection of micro brewed beers. While we ate were also treated to some great local music and beautiful views of the inlet.
