Very poor for the price! Went there last weekend with 11 friends. We had reservations for 2 weeks. We were placed in a weird corner in a 3/4 banquet so it was impossible to get out once you were seated. The server had no access to anyone past the four on one end. There was another huge table parallel to us (long and thin) making it impossible to take orders or serve food/drinks directly. The drinks and food were passed down the table by our party members. This is an expensive full service restaurant! The food was as bad as the layout! We all had stakes (mostly filets) and they were all overcooked. We were so hungry at that point that only one person sent it back ... 10 min. later she was told it would be 8 min for her state (all the others were almost done eating) so she cancelled her order. Expensive stake house that can't get the stake right!!!!????? This was not the only problem. My rice was not cooked ... some grains were totally raw. We also ordered fresh mozzarella appetizer ($9) which consisted of 3 tiny slices of cheese layered with 3 very thin NOT ripe, tasteless tomato slices with no herbs or seasoning. The food is very poor for the prices they charge. The service was good. But if you want to get good food go somewhere else! read more

My sister and a group of her friends recently dined at your restaurant for her prom. During her visit, she was greeted by the waitress 2 times. Once to take the order, and once to give them their ticket. My sister, named Ashton, told my mother and I about the horrible experience she had at this site. Ashton said that upon arriving her party was seated and they ordered their food. The food was delivered by another person other than their waitress. The food was cold, and was not of good quality. Some in her group received burnt food also. Upon having to ask the waitress to bring the ticket to the party because the waitress had not been serving them, they noticed that gratuity was included. This would have not been a problem if the waitress had actually been present for maybe at least half of their presence at the meal. Of course as 17 year old kids, they would not argue this with anyone. I was notified of this when she returned home. She and her friends chose this restaurant out of ALL the places in Athens for her only senior prom, because of the good things that she/we had heard of it. Upon this meal, we are very disappointed, especially because the meal was not up to the par that we had heard previously. The kids were expecting to have a great meal, especially for the price they were paying, instead they received cold or burnt food, and were starving the rest of the night. The saying goes that if a restaurant is bad, more people are likely to hear about it. And instead of emailing me back or listening to my problem, they just deleted my review on their facebook account.. read more

Went for lunch. Excellent service. Ordered burger with bleu cheese and she-crab soup. Burger cooked to perfection. Toasted bun. Seasoned ground filet (oh my!) Beautifully presented. Now the soup on the other hand. Unimpressive. Not "crabby" but rather "krabby." Creamy and served hot but not remarkable in flavor. Don't be intimidated by the dinner prices, go for lunch. Pretty sure love is one of the main ingredients: If there were a half-star option, this would receive a 4.5 for Sunday brunch. This is an Athens, GA, treasure. Every offering of the buffet was on point. The recipes were excellent and expertly prepared. The staff is friendly, energetic and very attentive. The chef and cooks have personality plus. It's perfect for vegetarians, pescatarians and, obviously, meat-eaters. The buffet is kept fresh and plentiful. It would be nice if the window of operation were a bit wider than 11:30 - 2, but the one area in need of improvement would be the coffee. Perhaps it was today's anomaly but the coffee was too weak to enjoy, not just a light roast, it was watery. Even still, it was an excellent experience well worth the price. In addition to standard southern breakfast fare, fruit, salad, omelette and pancake stations, menu highlights included she-crab soup (OMG good), perfectly grilled salmon with apple-cider reduction, vegetables cooked to perfection, and meatloaf with skin-on mashed potatoes. The food was good but the service was horrible. Our server was not attentive at all. while placing our order she would just disappear, leaving some of our dinner party having not ordered at all. She was a nice individual but seemed to be stretched very thin in her duties. We made these reservations ahead of time, looking very forward to this night. Went to Porterhouse grill with a $25 resturant .com certificate last sat night and am I glad I did. I wis a little skeptical as it was empty a 6pm but thats where my skeptisim ends. They had a chef special Ny strip scallops mash and asparagus and it was out of this world. I am so happy I tried this and will definately go back. read more

Having never been to Porterhouse before this past Valentine's Day I didn't know what to expect. I can now say it was definitely a great choice. Very friendly over the phone for reservations, and very friendly greeting when we came in the door. The steaks we had were great and the atmosphere was perfect for a Valentine's Day date. I will definitely consider it when looking for a nice dinner in Athens. read more

For my birthday and just moved to Athens I was going to find a good steak place. Looking on yelp seen Porterhouse and looked at reviews some good and some bad. But we went and we got to the restaurant got a table and water and that was it, no service at all and it was 20 min and we got up and left. Talked to the lady behind bar and she said sorry and for us to talk to the manager we said no. If we did the service staff my hav an attitude. So we went to LAST RESORT it was great, told them about the bad service and they took care of us and gave us our appetizers free because we had a bad time at Porterhouse and it was my birthday.Sent a email to manager never heard back. We found new friends in Athens and we talked about places to eat and we told them about Porterhouse and first thing out of them was " o don't go there bad service and not that good" best advertisement is word-of-mouth so what we here from locals now is skip that place. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to eat at the porterhouse grill, but my experience there warrants 1 star. On a busy game day evening in Athens, my mother and I were looking for a place to eat. After our initial dining plan turned out to be way too crowded we checked in at the porterhouse to see how long the wait for a table would be. It was understandably crowded in the porterhouse (gameday traffic) and there was a bit of a line just to get to the podium and put your name down for a table. My mom stepped outside to get out of the crowd and I waited in line to put our name down. After waiting about ten minutes I finally made it to the podium and was clearly the next person in line to be served. The host glanced at me and then immediately shifted his gaze to the man standing behind me and asked how many people were in his party. The man behind me was not polite enough to point out that I was in front of him in line and sidestepped in front of me to put his name down for a table. It was the most blatant sexism I've ever experienced and to this day I'm infuriated thinking about it (this happened last fall). After the incident I left...I'm not interested in eating at a restaurant that assumes that a young woman couldn't possibly be waiting in line by herself to get a table at a restaurant. read more

I went the other night with my girlfriend and the service was absolutely terrible. I've been several times before with no incident, but last night was full of problems. The waiter had trouble getting the drinks right, hardly ever checked on us unless we went and got him ourselves, brought out multiple courses at the same time so food got cold, and the worst was he blatantly lied about there being gluten in my girlfriends dish who has celiac disease. In his words, "I didn't think a little gluten would matter, so I just said there was none" after being confronted about it. Well my girlfriend was in terrible pain all night, so yes a little gluten does matter. What's worse is he took a good 20 minutes to apologize for it after being told of his error. The only saving grace was the manager being sympathetic and taking her dinner off the receipt, but that hardly makes up for ruining the whole night and causing terrible stomach pain. read more

im giving this restaurant three stars ONLY because of the hostess at the front desk. of course when we went in, they were super busy with it being a Saturday night, but we made reservations three days prior for 7:30 that night. when we walked in we were greeted with a smile and then were told that our table would be ready when another couple was finished eating. that is absolutely not have a reservation works. our table was never reserved and on top of that, 5 parties were seated before us even though we had been waiting for twenty minutes. at this point i was frustrated with standing by the door so i addressed the hostess and asked her to seat us immediately since we had been waiting. she then told me "i cant, im running food" well EXCUSE ME food runner, you should pay more attention to your reservation list. after the manager saw that u was clearly upset, she sat us instantly and our server was absolutely amazing. the food was so delicious. i will definitely be eating here again but unfortunately due to my last experience, ill be getting it to go. read more

After eating here many years on game days, this was truly a horrible experience. We had 8:00 reservations for 2, got there on time and had to wait 20 minutes for a tiny 2 top in the bar area that was available when we got there. So close to the bar my stool actually was against the one behind me all night - all two hours. Took another 20 plus minutes for the waiter to even realize we were there. Unfortunately he did not pay much more attention to us or the other two 2 tops in that area all night. Brought my wife the wrong wine, had to get the hostess to tell him to come over as he never checked back on us. Finished out salads before he bothered to come back. Service still did not get any better as it took 2 hours to get through the meal, had to even ask for refills of water after sitting empty for 10 minutes. Management did not seem to care either, so not sure we will ever go back. Food was fine, but the experience horrible! read more

I went to Porterhouse with a group of friends (7 in total). I had a decent time. One of the women in my group approached the buffet (we went for sunday brunch) and asked about the Prime Rib, she was told that they were out. She was disappointed but understood as it was already 1pm. However, as the chef walked away he muttered "life is disappointing". Now my friend was very upset. She went straight to our server and complained about the way she had been treated. The server (I believe her name was Nicole) apologized and said she would speak to the manager. I have to say that on the whole the service was the best part of our experience. What food was still available was also good. Unfortunately, no manager came by our table for some time. My friend's husband was particulary upset and went back to nicole to talk about what the chef had said and she told him she would send the manager by. My friend went back to the buffet and the chef was back on the line. He apologized for what he had said and my friend said she was happy with what he had said. After another 20 minutes a woman came by our table, she seemed annoyed, somewhat angry, and frustrated at having to stop by and talk to us. She did not acknowledge what the chef had said (he had apologized at this point). She just apologized for there not being any prime rib and gave us a gift certificate. I have to say I will not return to Porterhouse. Nicole was friendly, attentive and provided very good service. I am not upset about what was said by the chef, he apologized to my friend and that was that. But when I go to a, supposedly, nice restaurant I expect management to be top notch. This woman was disheveled, she had either been drinking that morning or was still feeling the effect from the night before. She was curt, and did not address the real problem. I know it was father's day but a place like this should have been better prepared. This type of management is what makes restaurants fail. If you want pretty good food, very good service but to be treated like crap if anything goes at all wrong then this is the place for you. For the price it isn't worth it. read more
