Aloud you to have a private conversation but not so quite you feel like you have to whisper. Food: Now unfortunately we go down hill fast. I ordered the NY strip cooked medium. Wife ordered a chicken dish, My mother got crab cakes. Kids shared fettuccine Alfredo with shrimp. Food came out in a decent time The steak was cooked well done (no pink at all) and was extremely thin cut for NY strip , asparagus was cold, potatoes were great no issues there. When I sent the steak back the asparagus came back burnt, the steak was now a better cut but cooked medium rare which I was fine with didn't want to wait again. Service was good, the ambiance itself was an older building. The food, however, was average for a steakhouse. I had steak frites with French fries. The steak was okay, the fries were good (they could have been warmer). Dessert (chocolate lava cake) was quite good. Maybe for every 2-3 out of 20 restaurants I visit, I'll write up a review. Most often for great ones that deserve our patronage, and occasionally for ones that suck to warn people away from. Staying in Athens tonight on business, I asked a colleague who has lived here (and who comes down from Nashville for most UGA games) where to go for dinner. He mentioned a few with Porterhouse at the top. Easy walk from my hotel (Hyatt Place - and as usual a great place to stay). Maybe 5 minutes. Incredible service. Superb food. Really good value for this quality. I plan to be back. Started with a perfect Manhattan. Called for a double and that was generous enough to last until I left. She Crab Soup is one of our favorites. This one came out.....and was different. "What is this?" I thought. Usually they're so rich, thick and creamy your spoon could stand up in the middle. This one was slightly thinner. Slightly less rich. And somehow much better. Like more refined and elegant without relying on richness and weight. I loved it. Wedge salad? No surprise here. They nailed it. And everything was super fresh. 10 oz. Filet was cooked perfectly. I asked for something "kind of mid way between rare and medium rare". They nailed it. 2 sides were included. Both well executed. Green beans and redskin mashed Potatoes. Usually I'll go for something with dark chocolate for dessert. Or crème brûlée. Tonight they had a peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream that looked good. It wasn't good - it was freaking awesome! Last but not least. Delaney is the perfect "server". Seriously - utmost in professionalism and very pleasant. Came here on Thanksgiving and this place did not disappoint! I The atmosphere was so calming. The music, spot on for the season. My Ribeye though was cooked to perfection. The Mac n cheese was very creamy. The Cesar salad was so good and fresh. I only wish they had Prime Rib on their menu. I would think such a high class establishment would have a high class cut of meat. I hope it's something they consider to add to their menu in the future, as then this place would be perfect!!! read more

So I have to say that the staff is fantastic and the owner should be very pleased with who is working there. First, my son left a card that I gave him for his birthday there and the waitress came out running around the corner to make sure that she gave it back to us. Then I got a phone call two hours later that I left my sweatshirt there, they must've found my phone number from the reservation and I went there and there was no parking. I stopped out front and asked if somebody could please bring it out when the entire restaurant was already clear and they were ready to go home. A young girl brought out my sweatshirt. I tried to give her a tip and she said absolutely not, have a great night! What started out as a personally difficult night the staff really went above and beyond with just human kindness. Words cannot describe how disappointed I am in my meal from porterhouse grill. I do want to say first of all that the service was exceptional. I ordered my porterhouse steak as you could see in the picture medium and I was very specific that I did not want the state to be blue. When I got the steak it was completely blue on the inside and it was so full of gristle that I couldn't even eat a quarter of the steak. They did ask me what was wrong with the steak but I was with other people and I did not want to make a scene so I told them that I just didn't want to take the rest home. My coworkers were not impressed with their steak either. Needless to say there are a lot of places in Athens to eat and I highly doubt that I would be back to this restaurant for what we paid in the food that I received I would not do it again. read more

We came in with a large group. Our server (sorry I didn't catch him name, but he's a young blonde) was great, kept our drinks refilled, brought requested condiments promptly and was very friendly. This is definitely not the best steakhouse anywhere. The service is ok. My last experience was not so great at all. I was basically told the peach cobbler I ordered for lunch would've been too much work to package to go. So although I ordered it the server waited until he was bringing me my food to let me know that. Also they should really consider hiring a chef that knows how to cook food with good flavor properly. The "Philly cheesesteak" I had was a complete joke. Just grey beef and soggy but somehow still slightly stale bread. I normally do not write reviews but this information needs to be shared...Porterhouse was awful! I would not recommend this place under any circumstance. My husband and I were guest of a large party. A large party that had reservations in a private room. Approximately 35 people. Appetizers were preordered and a set menu was in place. Even bottles of wine were preordered and ready for guest, red and white. Then things went south. Sidebar-Our host for the evening was a longtime friend and client of my husbands. Unfortunately, he could not attend due to a medical emergency. (Thank goodness because he would have been appalled) Staff could not even keep ice water filled throughout the evening much less wine or other beverages. I tried to assist. I've worked in F&B myself, years ago. Plates were piling up from the appetizer and salads. I was told they were trying to clear the tables so the could bring dinner. (An hour after being seated) Sharing that I was happy to help, I did so. Again, everyone's glasses were empty! No water, no wine, no tea, no beverages whatsoever. I asked for a pitcher of ice water so I could at least help with that and clear plates. A server brought me one. The manager Zach came to me and told me to "sit down that I had no place serving the guest." I responded well if your staff would at least refill water and pre bus the tables then we would be ok. Now mind you, some still needed wine, tea or any other beverage of choice. He told me that if I didn't sit down he was going to throw me out of the restaurant! Seriously?!? I was helping his staff...and over a pitcher of ice water...and gathering plates to bus the tables that his staff couldn't. As a reminder, 35+people, reservations in advance, preset menu for appetizers and food. $50/head, plus alcohol cost. So guess what's next...I sat down shut my mouth and waited on dinner to be served. My salad never came. Filet, mashed potatoes and green beans. I ordered my steak medium. FIRST steak delivered, rare. SECOND steak delivered, well done and burnt. THIRD steak delivered RAW. I told the server to just forget it. Very underwhelmed. Our host would not be happy should he not have had a medical emergency. Word of advice...Don't go there. Save your money and time. Find a burger place down the street if you are hungry. read more

Overall I had a great experience here. Made reservations the week before for 14 people with no problems. They called and verified the night before that we were still coming which is great. Parking was the only issue during this evening. Especially with a party of 14 @ 7pm during the work week. When I walked in I was politely greeted by my waitress named Cat (who was amazing). She took the cake I brought in and immediately refrigerated it. At some restaurants, the entire party has to be there before being seated but they immediately seated us and the rest of the party as they came in. Cat was amazingly quick and attentative to us. Took our drink and appetizer orders then went over the specials for the evening. The appetizers came out fast along with our drinks. The food was amazing! We had an office lunch here today. Our reservation was for 11:30, and we were seated promptly in their back room. Eight of us were at one table and seven at the other. Our wait person was very sweet. She seemed a little nervous but took drink orders right away. I'm pretty sure we all had our drinks and had ordered our food by 11:45. At 12:25 our table still did not have our entrees. The other table was served at around 12:15 but two entrees didn't make it to the table, so everyone at that table waited another 10 minutes until everyone had their food. As you might imagine, it wasn't at optimal temperature by then. Our table finally received our orders at about 12:30, except for one person, who got hers five minutes later. The meal salads were good. Portions are adequate. I requested medium rare for the steak in my salad, and it's a crapshoot whether that is what I actually got. I get that we were there at prime lunch time, but we arrived well before the restaurant got full. That it took 45 minutes to deliver our entrees is ridiculous. That our wait person never once came back in those 45 minutes to update us on the status of our food is inexcusable. It wasn't a good value either. With tip (charged automatically because of the number of us, calculated on the amount *plus* tax) my steak salad and glass of water was more than $13. I won't return. read more

My brother and I just came from lunch at Porterhouse and I have never been so disappointed and embarrassed for having told him that this was supposed to be a wonderful restaurant. Not only were the items that we ordered burned to the color of charcoal and inedible,when I told the mgr. he proceeded to come to our table and lecture me about how I should never do what I did because I made his chef cry! It's a shame that chain restaurants like Longhorn and Texas Roadhouse are the best steak houses in town. I love to support local businesses, especially restaurants, but Porterhouse is like its well done steak - past its prime, dry, and lacking flavor. From the dated dining room decor to the water-stained drop down ceilings in the bathroom, it feels like it's stuck in the 90s era of cuisine. The menu and presentation is unexciting and unoriginal. This place probably survives on college date nights and parents taking their college kids out for a meal. I don't know too many locals who talk highly of the food. Experience: The host and server were unaccommodating to our multiple requests to have a booth or more private table. Instead, we were seated in the middle of the dinning room in a high traffic area. We asked our server if we could move into one of the booths behind us when they came open, and she mentioned the booths behind us were for people with reservations - which we had. Shortly, two booths came open in our server's area and neither one was offered to us. We thought that maybe they wanted to keep them open for a larger group, but another couple was given one of the booths and the other one was left vacant. I'm in a interracial relationship, and upon looking around, I noticed that all people of color were seated in the most high traffic tables or in the back by the bathrooms. This is an observation, not an accusation of discrimination. I get that I'm particular about where I sit in a restaurant. We were frustrated with the host's and server's lack of effort to accommodate our requests. Lesson learned - we should have left at that point or waited to be seated at a table that worked for us. Service: The service missed the mark. Drink service was lacking, taking about 15 minutes between the time I finished my first drink and getting the server's attention to order a second. When asked if we wanted bread, we said "yes, please". We got our bread about 10 minutes later. It's tough not to notice the service that the surrounding tables were receiving, especially the table that was seated after us and had drinks and their food in no time. Food and Drinks: Fried oysters were probably the best thing we ordered, and it was mostly the sauce I liked. The crab cakes, porterhouse steak, and filet were nothing special in my opinion. Flavor was lacking and the meat was dry. The side of grilled shrimp was bland. I've had better steaks at friends' houses, and at chain restaurants like Longhorn or Texas Roadhouse. The drink menu was focused on wines and none of the few house cocktails piqued my interest. One Cabernet on the menu was simply described as "tastes like a Cabernet". In conclusion: Not only am I posting this review here, but I provided my feedback about our experience to our server before leaving. Lessons learned 1. Don't settle for less when you communicate what you need. If your needs are not being met - Just leave! 2. Know when something is past it's prime. 3. Athens has no real local steak house 4. Enjoy your company even when you don't enjoy the restaurant. 5. Vote with your money. Don't spend money at places that you don't support. I will no longer spend my money here. 6. The staff were all friendly. We were able to walk in as a party of 3 and get seated with no wait on a Friday night. The ambiance was nice and not excessively loud, which is important for me. The portions were sizable. One reason for the review is that the food was good, but it wasn't $50/person or more good. The NY strip ordered medium felt closer to medium rare to me. The Caesar salad was average. The other reason is the bathrooms were out of soap. That's not acceptable. It's not like I want anyone fired over it, but coached would be nice. The steaks were way overpriced so I opted for the filet meatballs with angel hair pasta. We also got Caesar salad and brussel sprouts. The filet meatballs were dry, cheap hamburger, and were teeny tiny (honestly the frozen meatballs from the grocery store would have been far superior to these) and the marinara tasted like a mix of ketchup and bbq sauce. It was so gross. The Caesar salad had no flavor. The bread they bring to the table was good and the brussel sprouts were very good (only reason for 2 stars). The service was attentive but they brought our salad, app, and meal out at the same time so by the time we got to our meal it was cold. Pet peeve. Don't waste your time going here. The prices are still on the classy side, but the food seems to have taken a hit over the years. This used to be my go to for a nice dinner date or double date. Now, not so much. While the cuisine was very good, I feel compelled to mention the negative demeanor of the young gentleman who appeared to be managing the staff. I believe his name was Zachary. He was extremely condescending in his communication with the staff, and also engaged in a rude exchange with one of the other patrons. This is a high class and high priced restaurant for sure. However the food is spot on. And our server (Delaney) was attentive, knowledgeable, and everything you would want in a high class restaurant. She never let a drink empty and she conversed with the table as necessary. Our group had several entrees from the menu and all were excellent. The bone in rib-eye was pricey for sure but the cut is perfect and delicious. The she crab soup, oysters and fried green tomatoes we had as appetizers. They were an awesome start to a fantastic meal.
