I give two stars because it is late. However, it wasn't right before close. I am eating a burger that was supposed to be with everything, easy Mayo. This is what I got. No ketchup, no mustard, no onion, shredded cheese- and easy Mayo, which was like a "f" you. I'm not sure what's going on at the Portillo's at Harlem and Archer. Just very unhappy. Had to make a stop at Portillo's... The atmosphere in this place is a bit chaotic, but fun. Order and pay at the counter where you are given a number. Eventually your number is called out and you pick up your food. Tables are self-bused more or less. Once you figure out the ordering process and what line forms where it's not a bad experience. The hot dogs and Italian beef were good. The burgers and onion rings were meh. Rings were severely overcooked (hard breading...onion had been cooked out of them). It's a fun stop and being an out of towner I'm glad I did it once. Would I go out of my way to stop at a Portillo's again? Probably not. Try the dogs at the Lincoln Park Zoo. I used to go to Portillo's more often than I do now. It's about a 7-minute drive from my house to Summit. I have given this place every opportunity to improve. I might go every 4 months now, hoping that it gets better and it hasn't. The portions just keep getting smaller and smaller and today I had to keep from calling the restaurant and flipping out on the manager because I knew it wouldn't do any good. I've ordered the beef bowl in the past and it was a decent portion. No complaints. Tonight I ordered the Italiano bowl which is beef and a meatball. Price is more but they rip you off on the beef. YEP! If you're hungry and want a little extra don't get this! HOW CHEAP ARE YOU GUYS GETTING??? I was so mad that they did this. They are getting ridiculous. Also, if you asked for cheddar on the beef bowl, they give you shredded cheddar but on a sandwich they give you the liquid gold! I grew up going to this portillos all my life so this one is obviously my favorite. I've had everything on the menu and there is nothing that I don't like but most of the time my go to is a regular Italian beef with sweet peppers and a little extra gravy across the top. This is by far the most incompetent restaurant/fast food place I've ever patronized. I've had multiple times where the order was missing items. Usually it's a $4.00 slices of cake or $1.50 cups of cheese, for some reason they forget those frequently. I've also had multiple times where I've went into the restaurant and ordered and paid face to face, only to sit there for a 20 minutes while people behind me get their orders. Then when I ask about my order, no one knows it even existed. Today was straw that broke the camel's back for me. I pulled into the lot and proceeded into the drive through, there were other cars in the drive through. The kid in the drive through, who had an order number tablet and a portable order taker was signaling me like I was an 747 jet, but I have no idea what he was trying to say with his hand gestures. So I pulled forward and said "dude, I have no idea what you are trying to say." All he said was, "not the drive through, back up". What not the drive through? You're not the drive through attendant (even though you have order numbers on your fingertips waiting for cars to put them on)? The drive through is closed (even though other people are proceeding through)? So now I have to reverse through half the drive through? The same drive through I've went through 200 times before and ordered food. I reversed and went to McDonalds, which is saying a lot. I will not be going here anymore. I've never seen such incompetency in a place that managed to stay open this long. read more

Looking for some authentic Chicago style food with a fun atmosphere and decent pricing? Look no further. This place was literally our first stop after landing in Chicago and getting our rental car. We had a good wish list and it included Chicago style food so when we saw this on our way to visit friends we pulled in. Parking was a bit of a beast, but they do have a lot of space. I recommend just parking wherever you find the first spot. They do also have to go parking. The line separated into two queues. The ordering process was relatively quick and painless. We got traditional Chicago dog meals with fries. Hubs got good without pickle. They give you a number and call it out when ready, so listen up! The dogs were loaded down with toppings. I ended up having to scrape some off just to finish it! Casing was perfect, relish was delish, pickle was a little too much. The atmosphere is fun with lots of deco and there are tons and tons of seating options. Booths are a bit tight, so maybe grab a table with chairs. I am only giving 1 star because the employees & staff are very nice & friendly. My family & I used to go here when they first opened & the food was very good. But today at lunch time on a Saturday the place was almost empty. Sad to see but once we sat down to eat our food I know why. Since the original owners sold Portillo's the quality of the food went way downhill. The prices went way up as everything else has now. But the food is not good. I am giving up on going there. I have noticed this is happening with most Portillo's & that is sad. I will eat at places where the food is good from now on. It is too expensive to get a lousy meal. Just arrived in MDW, went straight here for lunch to try their well known Chicago Hotdogs. It's a hole on the wall, self service type of restaurant. We ordered Jumbo Chili dog, Jumbo Hot dog and Portillos hot dog. Lemon cake for dessert and Chocolate Cake shake. I was so disappointed with their Jumbo hotdogs. For NJ and NY Jumbo hotdog standard, those Portillo jumbo dogs are not Jumbo at all. Just regular hotdogs for me. And they taste like a regular hotdogs, even if they have different toppings on it. The lemon cake is heavenly tasty and soooo good! The Chocolate Cake shake is out of this world! Servers are helpful. Servings are not Jumbo at all. Extremely dissatisfied with their customer service. We placed an online order to be picked up by 8pm for curbside pickup. When we arrived at the location we were instructed to park in the lot in the curbside pickup section and to text a number with our information. We received a response saying someone would be out with our food. We waited 15 minutes out of courtesy seeing that it was a Saturday night but no one came or even approached the vehicle yet there were several employees standing outside. We decided to call at which point they then decided to inform us their system wasn't working and we needed to go inside. Once inside our food still wasn't ready and we needed to wait an additional 20 minutes. I'm all for being understanding of the short staffing but this was completely disappointing. I don't even want to begin on the mistakes with my order. Portillos needs to step up and at least get better at keeping its customers satisfied when mistakes this big occur. read more

I placed an order for the 1st thru door dash for portillos and I called them to ask if they can add Parmesan cheese to my orders because it did not have an option for that thru door dash and because my momma raised me right and has educated me with manner and politeness , first I said when they answered their phone is hello and may I have your name please and portillos worker says" what do you need my name for " " To be polite ???? " I say to her and she says well my manager has stated I can't give out my name . I don't how portillos manages the team but this is not ok! I just called for something very simple and mean no trouble but come one ! For a portillos employee not to give out the name because your manager stayed you can't do that is ridiculous. Once upon a time I would have defended the brand 'til the end from naysayers within my circle of family and friends. Born and raised in Chicagoland and amongst an abundance of local neighborhood "greasy spoon" joints, it should almost be criminal for me to set foot in a Portillo's...but one has to be open-minded and objective and sometimes give in to, what can be undeniably good. Lately, now that Portillo's is growing in full force and has sold off their local soul & entity...this place has become less giving with their portions, more generic-indifferent and pricey. It's a shame, as one of my all time fave treats from Portillo's had always been their beef & cheddar croissant with giardiniera peppers. Attached from yesterday night, is a pic of their currently way over-priced for the reduced portion quality-sandwich. Pic might not accurately depict scale of the truly shrunken size of the current offering of this menu item staple at Portillo's. It used to be yummy-Portillo's, but in an era of choices and just as pricey-BUONA BEEF definitely has you beat in the Italian beef arena. I understand with covid and crowded restaurants for people picking up food. But for me to get my burger with rotten brown lettuce, my large onion rings with only a few pieces of rings, my chocolate cake missing, and my Italian beef order missing giardenara and hot peppers and it no gravy is ridiculous. I was recently visiting Chicago and a coworker recommended this place so I checked it out with my mom. Not sure if all locations look like this one but, this place also had a pasta/salad spot attached. We thought about a salad but went straight to the hot dog side. I got chili cheese dogs and she got the regular hot dots with mustard relish. We ordered fries and a chocolate shake to split as well. The price was right at about $17. The wait was surprisingly long for hot dogs and the place wasn't entirely busy so not sure why it took so long. The poppy seed buns were a nice touch. I liked my chili cheese dogs but would probably get something different next time. I didn't think to ask if the chili came with beans (it did) but I was able to pick them out pretty easily. Not a bean person. My mom was a little turned off by the color of the relish on her hot dogs. It was neon green! Not sure if they do that for looks or what but it was definitely odd.
