So FUN. Very Catchy Signs. They are super busy, and offer multiple parking lots. In a really busy family fun area. I was shopping nearby and the signs caught my attention. It's amazing they are still here, I remember when they first opened maybe 20yrs ago. Wow. I love how it's like walking into a history lesson. Like a USA historical site location. Do people pay attention to their surroundings and treasure hunts? Very unique. Very interesting. I love how modern it is and easy to navigate. They really are clean and organized for such a busy place. They have been in this community for a long time. And are still doing so well here. That's awesome! I used a new self serve kiosk. I find those are very helpful and no communication is needed at all. If you can see pictures, you can pick your food. Kids can navigate it. Good way to get them to "self help" and guide them to make good decisions. They call a number. I pick up my food. Clean dining room. Picnic traditional table clothes. Also the old Pizza Hut brand use to use those too and it was very catchy then. My chargrilled burger was amazing. It's so fresh, juicy, and perfect blends of goodness in a fresh sesame bun. The cheese sauce on the side for the Krinkle Fries. Yum. They do have Coke Zero products. They also have a famous chocolate cake & cake shake. So good. I had plenty left for another meal later. They also have a large catering business attached. That was super organized also. There was a bar but they were not open. read more

First time having Portillo's! Yummy! We had the #1 Italian Beef combo and it was so hearty and delicious!! We got it dipped and added mozzarella cheese. It was so perfect! We scarfed down our food it was so good and I forgot to take pictures lol my Husband even asked if I took pictures lol The service was fine, easy and efficient young man. It's old school for sure, reminds me of being a kid in an Italian restaurant! Fond memories indeed! I will be back! read more

The ordering process is super confusing but once you're pointed in the right direction, it's all about the food! - Parking is plenty. There are 2 adjacent lots next to each other that are open and easy to park in. - Interior is clean, spacious, and open. Lots of tables for large and small parties. - Order at the cash register at the right end of the store, and wait for your receipt number to be called at the pick-up counter - 2 Original hot dogs: 10/10. So good. I love the textures with the pickle and the yummy pepper - Maxwell Street Polish: 9/10. I LOVE the polish sausage! So juicy and the helpings are generous. I wish it had the same flavor profile as the original hot dog, and it would be an 11/10 - Chili Cheese Dog: 5/10. Nothing to write home about! - I also got another specialty polish dog, but I don't remember the name! HOT DOG POLITICS Who says I have to vote Democratic or Republican? I should be able to cast a ballot for Portillo's. I'm always on the lookout for a new location of this beloved Windy City chain, which has now expanded into California, Texas, Florida, Iowa, and Arizona. I recently started a new job in Chicago and found a Portillo's (this one in the town of Summit) off of Harlem Ave. As with all Portillo's, this one has a particular theme (1930's prohibition) with plenty of stuff to look at. A classic Chicago-style hot dog ($3.90) with extra sport peppers is the way to go. My wife usually gives me hers, since she's not a fan of the intense but short-lived burst of spiciness they're known for. Crinkle cut fries with a cheese cup (only $1 extra) make for a solid accompaniment, and wash that down with a large root beer ($3) for a terrific lunch. I thought the spicy chicken sandwich ($7.25) was tasty, a good-quality breaded chicken patty with lettuce, tomato, and spicy mayo on a brioche bun. Their Italian beef is a step below Buona -- and a whole set of stairs below Johnnie's -- but the beef 'n cheddar croissant is delicious. Their bacon & cheese charburgers deserve more attention, too. Fill out the survey on the back of the receipt, and you'll get a free large fry on your next trip (a $4 value). You can repeat this ad nauseam, though as long as you're giving them business I'm sure the nice people at Portillo's don't mind giving away fries. * TL;DR * You wanna know who I'm voting for in this year's election? I'm supporting the candidate who knows that ketchup doesn't belong on a hot dog (and let's be clear about one thing: since Donald Trump prefers his steak 'well done' with fries & ketchup, ain't no way his basic Oompa Loopa ass is ordering a dog "run thru the garden". Kamala, on the other hand, seems game to try anything once). I don't mind the fact that their parking lot is separated, but during last visit the line to place an order moved very slowly. When I finally got to the register, I overheard the guy next to me being asked if they wanted to try a slice of cake for just $1. Ummm why wasn't I offered this?? Of COURSE I would've said yes! I never thought I'd be writing a review like this about Portillo's -- the place I grew up loving -- but this visit was honestly disappointing on every level. First, the beef sandwich was a joke. The photo speaks for itself: a long roll with barely a thin strip of beef running down the center. It looked like they took one small handful of meat and stretched it as far as possible. Not only that, but the beef was bone dry -- as dry as the Sahara desert. No dip, no juice, not even the extra gravy I paid for. The bread wasn't soaked, wasn't moist, wasn't even warm... just dry and sad. The fries? Don't get me started. Instead of normal fries, I got a pile of short, tiny pieces -- like someone scooped the bottom of the bag and tossed all the leftovers into my order. For the prices they're charging now, that is completely unacceptable. This is not the Portillo's I grew up with. I'm not even that old, and yet it feels like the place has declined drastically -- quality down, portions down, and prices doubled. It's honestly embarrassing how far it has fallen. I miss the Portillo's that actually cared about giving you a legit beef sandwich, dipped properly, loaded with meat, with fries that weren't scraps. Huge disappointment. Portillo's is an excellent place to visit especially this location knowing it's the very first location. Portillo's will always be my favorite place to go on Wednesday nights. I'm quite displeased with the introduction of the birthday cake. It doesn't have the same rich flavor and moist texture as the chocolate cake. The food is fantastic, you can get free refills, the service has only become better since 2019, and I somehow only hear Count Basie songs when I eat there. However I can't say the same about Barnelli's. Before the pandemic, Barnelli's had a much bigger menu and the food was of a higher quality. They had removed over 2/3 of the menu taking away most wraps and baked spaghetti. I'm still disappointed about the cuts made on the menu. I highly recommend eating at this historical icon of a restaurant. read more

Portillos service overall has gone down tremendously over the last few yrs. This will most likely be my last visit. For 1 the wait time is absolutely ridiculous. 2 the beefs are so dry even when you get them dipped. And the sausage on the combo is so dry and overcooked. The fries taste like they've changed the brand the originally used they look fresh but the inside are pretty much freezer burnt. The peppers aren't even good anymore nor are the hot. My step father was brutally attacked by an employee in front of my Mom and no one did anything. I'm sure you're wondering what he did to provoke it, but it was completely unwarranted. How can you justify assaulting a senior citizen that was patronizing your business? Then when the police came, they mistreated my Mom and step Dad. It was touted as "the Chicago Dog" by my fiancee's family and I have to say that it definitely was something I wanted a second round of but that's just because I think the Chicago Dog flavor combination is superior.... not because this Portillo's myth is actually true. I think they just do it "right" and have been doing it "right" for a long time. If you're in Chicago, wondering if you should try it... try it. One of my fave's when in Chicago. The old reliable Italian beef with peppers dipped is my standard. But today I went different. Changed it up with an Italian pasta dish. It was delicious. Tried the rigatoni with vodka sauce. A little bit spicy but definitely tasty. Did the side garden salad, a side meatball and garlic bread. It was enough for two! I enjoy coming here. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual. Counter service and bus your tray. The decor is nostalgic signs and oldies music. Perfect for lunch and dinner, crowds of all sizes and ages. read more

It makes me sad to have to leave a three star review. Since I was a kid I loved portillos my favorite dish was the fettuccine Alfredo but they changed their recipe and made it a little more garlicky which I am not a fan of. The staff has been a little mean recently and not friendly. read more

The food was amazing and if you're ever in the area, I would say this is the place to stop. Customer service was top-notch and the food was served hot and fresh. There isn't anything I can say about Portillos that hasn't already been said. I'm luckily to live so close to this place. Portillos always is serving fresh food and there have been very few times I've been displeased with being here. Barnellis deserves more love, the pastas are fantastic(i could eat the vodka pasta daily) and my SO loved the variety of salads. I do miss the chicken Cesar wraps, although it looks like they condensed their menu post covid. The meatballs here are outstanding, I usually get a side every time I get a pasta. read more

I'd eat it at least once a week if I could but sadly I don't live near one. #1 suggested menu item (although you can't go wrong with anything), Italian big beef dipped, with mozzarella, cheddar, cheese sauce, american, sweet peppers; large cheese fries extra cheese; large drink. Just had a beef sandwich the other day, it was terrible. Not sure what's going on there but the quality is definitely not what it used to be. There used to be lines for the drive thru all the way onto Harlem at all hours of the night, now, it's a five minute wait for terrible, cold food and high prices because no one goes there anymore. read more

They need to package their deliveries differently, DoorDash and Uber drivers regularly steal food because they don't seal the bags, they just fasten the handles. One single French fry was at the bottom of my bag tonight which means it was included in my order but was stolen by the driver along with with hotdogs which are easy to slip thru where the handles are fastened. Also there's the fact they are garbage now that old man Portillo sold the joint. I cannot speak to the inside of the building, but if it looks like the outside it will be fun. The drive through always works fast and is easier to order the garden dogs through the drive through, because they seem to take longer. The food is always tasty and fresh, and glad they have a vegetarian option. read more

Two separate occasions: I went through the drive through and it wasn't busy but they got my order wrong and I only got spaghetti with a meatball and a salad. Idk how you could mess that up but they took forever to fix it. Seems like the customer service has gone down substantially compared to what it used to be. Second time we went in to order and I decided to try a new pasta from the Barnelli's side, penne diavolo and it was delicious! After our meal, I went up for a refill and they usually are so friendly but everyone seemed to hate life. To be completely honest, I didn't look up what a Chicago-style hot dog was before I came here, but wanted to try one because it's a Chicago staple. I don't like pickles, tomatoes, or mustard... and the beef hot dog comes with all of that plus relish, onions, and peppers. The hot dog wasn't bad but I wasn't blown away. It tasted like any other hot dog after I took off the pickles and tomatoes. The Italian Beef Sandwich was also lackluster. It was just slices of beef and bread. The person who took our order recommended we get hot peppers on the side but it should've been added onto the sandwich to add flavor. Overall, it felt like the sandwich was missing some sort sauce. After we ordered, I noticed on the menu that you could've ordered it with extra gravy or dipped so I probably should've gone with that for more flavor. read more

Quick service on the way to the airport even though they didn't follow my request. Nice casual ambiance with wonderful food. I asked for double wrapping of 6 king beefs because I was bringing them back to Houston and they couldn't or didn't fill my request. Needless to say everything was wet, soggy and the paper bag was torn apart upon arrival. I will definitely always support Portillo's though, but they need to understand that not everyone who goes there is a local. Definitely, I recommend them everywhere. Typical Portillo's chain restaurant, hubby needed his Chicago dog fix! He loves the Chicago dog. I got the chopped salad and asked " what's the house salad dressing?", the cashier said I don't know, ""we'll go find out"! Need more training for these cashiers! Chopped salad is good, processed salad dressing is in a portion cup, ok. Service, is ok but I think the manager was training people during lunch time and had no customer service as lines were forming and had no time to address customers, that's fine read more

I give two stars because it is late. However, it wasn't right before close. I am eating a burger that was supposed to be with everything, easy Mayo. This is what I got. No ketchup, no mustard, no onion, shredded cheese- and easy Mayo, which was like a "f" you. I'm not sure what's going on at the Portillo's at Harlem and Archer. Just very unhappy. I know that Dick Portillo isn't running it anymore, but my late father delivered the meat to the original location. We have always had pride in his product.
