This one of the coolest Portillo's around! Hippy Dippy yea yea yea~! They say it's all 70s themed at this location...but I saw some early Beatles merchandise...errr...Oh wells! There are still many fun items around the fast food joint. This location has everything the usual Portillo's have and do oh~so~well! Chicago-style hot dogs, cheese fries, Italian beef and that chocolate cake!!! Is there anything better!? I usually end up with a foot long hot dog and some cheese fries to share with friends. And when my office does a Cake Day once a month to celebrate birthdays? You best believe I'm always telling them to grab that mayo heavy Portillo's chocolate cake! It's the thing of legends. I used to eat at Portillos a minimum of once a week. I moved out of state and was in Chicago . Stopped by the Portillos on Lake Cook Road in Deerfield. Since private equity bought portillos they have gone to HELL. The service was terrible. Two customers in front of me came back to the pickup counter because there order was missing one item. On customer came back 3 times and they could not get her order right. There were plenty of workers but they weren't talking to each other. I ordered two hot dogs. When customers with numbers 10 greater than my wait number were called, I asked where my order was. The hotdogs were prepared at the hot dog station but no one brought them to the delivery window. I opened the hotdogs and the relish had so softened the bread it was like eating mush. Unfortunately I have had this experience at two non Illinois locations also. You have to love private equity and the way the drain the assets of a very successful company. read more

After several years of planning and a few site changes - the Deerfield Portillos finally opens with a retro 70's theme! Like any other Portillos, the fast and efficient lines (even on opening day) demonstrate why this institution with great hot dogs, Italian beef, chocolate cake, burgers, and fries continues to dominate the fast casual scene. Dick Portillo and his son Michael were present on the opening day, having friendly casual conversations with individual diners in a fully packed restaurant. The opening day demonstrated a master-class in logistics, as diners were able to efficiently grab food and eat with minimal waits for ordering, pickup, and seating. There is a reason why Portillos is the standard by which all fast food in Chicago is judged by. The "fast" part of fast food is clear to anyone who has dined here, food is fairly priced for the quality, quality is consistent between restaurants, portions are generous, and the service is friendly. The food at this location is the same delicious food you'll find at any other Portillos in the state, in my opinion defined by 5 dishes. 1. Italian Beef: Densely packed with meat and drenched in delicious beef juices. The meat sandwiched between perfectly baked french bread is always tender and not too lean. This is a must-try item if you only order one item from this restaurant. 2. Hamburger: I'm frequently disappointed when restaurants say they have a "char burger" and then there's no char flavor. But the meat in this burger is definitely full of char flavor and has deliciously crisp edges. The patty is evenly cooked throughout without being overcooked. The fresh tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, and other toppings they include round out a well balanced and satisfying flavor. The burger here is debateably better than ones several times this price. 3. Fries: Crinkle cut, not too oily, not too thick -- with just the right amount of seasoning. Simple yet delicious. 4. Hot Dog: Everything about this screams Chicago Style. Colorful and flavorful - with mustard, relish, onion, tomatoes, celery salt, pickles, and peppers (no ketchup). The normal hot dog is a little small for the amount of toppings you get so I'd recommend upgrading to a jumbo dog. In my opinion, the ratio of bun to meat should be about 3:1 with an equal ratio of toppings (But then again, I guess it wouldn't be Chicago style if the toppings weren't excessive). 5. Chocolate cake: Simple and delicious -- bordering on the edge of noticeably sweet without being too sweet. Just moist enough with the perfect amount of frosting. The perfect ending to any Portillos meal. In summary, another great Portillos restaurant that will be a favorite in Deerfield for years to come. I asked my co-worker who is a Chicago native what would be considered a Illinois thing like Chick-Fil-A, Waffle House is a Georgia thing. She said Portillo's. I'm glad it was a fast food kind of thing too. Portillo's wasn't far from the hotel so we dined in. With the cashier's recommendation, hubby got the everything hot dog. The hot dog is 100% beef which is not my thing so I opted for chicken. Hubby was stoked to know they offer Coke products here. After ordering, you get a number and listen to when it's called. It seems like well known celebs have come. I didn't recognize any but saw photos on the wall. Honestly, I wasn't looking too much at it anyways. Portillo's is packed but you should be able to find a table. The hot dog was smaller than we have thought. We're thinking of baseball size hot dogs. Nope, just regular small hot dogs with junk on top. Hubby was not impressed. Thankfully, he ordered fries too cause he was still hungry. My chicken burger was big and fine but nothing spectacular. We carried out two plant garden dogs and a cup of chicken noodle soup. Took forever, and the soup was not even 1/2 cup( directly measured) and it was $5. More than a plant based dog. First let's start about the staff I ordered a cheeseburger with onion rings and drink They put my order on the counter with no drink waited five min before they filled the drink part and called my number. The onion rings were cold by then Then I went to eat the burger. Bread was stale hard as a rock on parts. I know help is hard to find but to serve this shit to customers. I just cannot believe this is Portillo's! Why would anyone spend money. Went from our go to place and we ate at Portillos where ever we went, but the quality is gone from all locations now. Stopped here tonight for hot dog, fries and coke. I cannot even say the Coke was good! All syrup could not drink it. Fries were ICE COLD! THE WORST PORTILLOS... Consistently. The absolutely worst. Let's start with the fact that if you ever go through drive through it's more likely they mess up or don't include everything you ordered in your order. I always get cheese fries and if I don't check every single time. Atleast half the time it's missing. As well as getting gravy on the side. Next, you pay 8 bucks for a sandwich and I swear this location only always always scimps on the meat. It's always so light on the meat it's irritating. Customer service isn't bad as they'll always fess up to their mistakes. But they're just constantly making mistakes. If you must have portillos. I recommend that you DO NOT get the Italian beef as they never give you a full serving. Stick with any item you know you can guarantee a serving size. The food is delicious, no question about it, but recently I've been noticing that it has been extremely greasy. The napkins that the fries and hot dogs come in are sometimes drenching in grease. The service is always outstanding. The do a quick job getting the food over to you even though there are sometimes really long lines. I go with the jumbo hot dog with cheese fries almost every time. I called the Deerfield location and spoke to the manager (Jessica). I informed her of my experience. She replied, "Thanks for letting me know, I'll have to check into the process." Frankly, I was so surprised that she didn't even offer to comp my sandwich. What a waste of my hard-earned money. I have had so many bad experiences at Portillo's the past two years. They really need to get thir ct together. I have been there two times in the last 2 week and their systems such. First time I ordered using their ap thinking it would be faster. I had to go through their drive through which means I got to the window 5 minutes after the food was to be ready. I was put to the side and 20 minutes later I got my food while people who ordered when they arrived gotctheir food well before I did. This evening I ordered for inside pickup because I was on a hurry. When I got there I was told I couldn't go inside. I have to drive overto a girl who took my name and told me where to park. Yes, it's a step above McDonald's but not by much. My wife and I came here on a snowy winter night because it was close and quick. The location was convenient, service was lackluster, portions were puny and food was below average. For the price this was a marginal value. I've been to other Portillo's and get the grilled tuna sandwich consistently because it's tasty and pretends to be healthy. This time I was seduced by the "award-winning ribs" sign and ordered a rack to share. Who knew that the rib competition they won was a local cook off in some Chicago suburb, hardly a pitmaster championship. Perhaps better than the McRib sandwich but not even close to bbq joints like Real Urban BBQ, City BBQ, etc. I was most disturbed by the messy condiment area, dirty floor and tables, and open, overflowing trash cans in the dining room. Several young staff were busy chatting in the food prep areas instead of getting my order done, like the bunch of highway construction workers you see standing around behind the orange cones blocking traffic. Why these men and women weren't cleaning the dining room, restocking the plastic utensils and straws, and finishing our salad expeditiously, I don't know. A testament to the frugality of this restaurant is the fact that the soda fountain is inaccessible to customers. Three chicken caesar salads today picked up today. The iPhone app for pickup worked fine. The salad looked like the lettuce was badly wilted as if it had been heated on a stove or microwave. Portillo's is a quandary to me. It could be something, but it's just this really big restaurant that that people seem to love, staffed by people that don't seem to understand that people love them. The food and service at Portillo's is really no better than what one can get at any other fast food chain, but people line up and wait forever to be served sub par food in a paper bag...even if you are eating in the restaurant. I placed an order tonight for delivery. Was excited they were ready to deliver again. But when the order came I was missing half of my order my mom's full meal. The fries were ice cold the side of Jardinere was missing the side of cheese was missing for cheesy fries. And the cake I ordered was substituted without a phone call to ask me which one I would like instead. When I tried to call and talk to somebody at the store I was told they were too busy to talk to me. So my mom was out of dinner I give her some of mine and I couldn't even eat mine because it was gross. I would've liked to of resolved it and had them send my mom her dinner but I couldn't even talk to anybody and I think that's what really torqued my chain more. The bags were not closed properly the seals were there but they were not sealed. If I ever have to get some thing delivered again from Portillo's I'm just gonna do the one in Arlington Heights the one in Arlington Heights rarely makes a mistake and their service is 1000 times better. Based on my experience of visiting this location for lunch periodically since it opened, I'd say that there is about a 60-70% chance that your order will go through smoothly. Order onion rings during the lunch rush? Chances are you'll wait a good 15-20 minutes On more than one occasion, when their salad counter was busy with a large amount of phone orders, about 5 customers (including myself) must have stood there for 20 minutes. When we told them our order numbers and asked when they'll be ready, they asked to show them our receipts to show them what we'd ordered. That is a sign of a dysfunctional operation. Most recently, we carried out an order to feed about 10 people at our office. None of the salads were included. One sandwich was not included. And the condiments on my sandwich were incorrect. While I wouldn't call myself a Portillo's fanatic, I've always liked the variety of items offered - both those that a signature Chicago items and otherwise. I've generally been able to rely on Portillo's for getting orders correct and getting them out quickly and reliably. But this Deerfield location does not measure up. Despite it's convenient proximity to my workplace, I'll be avoiding it in the future. There are way too many other good places for lunch in the area. read more

Portillo's has become irrelevent in the local Chicago eateries. With new ownership, offerings have been reduced, quality has suffered and service has degraded. Went to Deerfield today, one of the first groups to order in the morning, credit card connection was down. That was understandable but it took 20 minutes to get our order. Something exotic, hamburger and chili. There must have been a dozen people working behind the counter but no food was being delivered. People were slinging hash everywhere and packaging stuff, but no food was being presented to customers. No one was working the eat in counter. Finally got the order, order was wrong and food was cold. Save yourself some aggravation, go to one of the fine independent choices in the area. Portillo's has big plans to expand, if this is the model they plan to copy, expansion will be a complete and utter failure. read more
